      You know, I saw your comment last night, and was going to type something along the lines of "This game always finds new ways to surprise me, like how I first found out about the blind spots in the upper corners of this stage- it's too bad nobody else can get up there."
      And then I realized they actually could:

      Thanks for the unintentional inspiration, man.

    If you've ever looked up a top-down view of ED-209, you can really see that's what the designers were going for with the sprite for this boss.

    Interesting! I thought that only the fast characters could do this without dying, like the spear or bow duo. Although I have managed to do it with Valkyrie or Kiddo for example as well, albeit it was a tad trickier due to them not being as fast.
    I never knew you could manipulate those homing rockets like that with the slowest characters. It's funny how every boss in this game can be cheesed in a way, except maybe boss in area 3.

    • @Arial55555
      @Arial55555  Год назад

      And it's not even the only way to do it- there's also the Corners Strat, which was believed to be a flinthead-only method, until recent experimentation regarding missile manipulation: ruclips.net/video/EMfMEtKQ-t8/видео.html
      Also, regarding World 3: Ironically, in the original Arcade Release of Gain Ground, there was a bug (or maybe it was a feature, I'm not sure) where if you killed the bosses of World 3, it'd ignore the other minor enemies still on screen and instantly end the stage. So there WAS a way to beat the stage without needing to be able to hit the high ground (in theory), but it got patched out lol.

      @prismaticpaul Год назад

      @@Arial55555 Huh, interesting, never knew that about the arcade version. I'm no speedrunner, but when I'm at the final stage of area 3, my preferred character is Moss (the guy with the bow and arrow who has a strafing special)
      He's fast, can hit high, and strafing is great to get hits in on the bosses. Come to think of it, the bowmen are probably the most versatile characters in the game lol, at least in my opinion.

    • @Arial55555
      @Arial55555  Год назад +2

      @@prismaticpaul The archers in fact ARE the best characters in the game! Or, well, at least, in terms of all-around utility. Most speedrunners ignore all the other characters and play exclusively as them (specifically Verbal, the non-strafing archer), going so far as to kill off the rest of their party members so they can finish stages quicker via the exit instead of killing all enemies.
      I don't like that, though. Variety and experimentation is what makes this game fun! Who needs 50 levels of Verbal running from fights he could easily win like a coward when you could be destroying bosses with Water Knight's fountains (which usually only stun enemies, but damage enemies that can't be stunned), just to test the game's limits?!

    • @prismaticpaul
      @prismaticpaul Год назад

      @@Arial55555 Yeah, i also like experimenting with all the characters, it's really fun! I understand that it may not be optimal, but damn it does feel great when for example, i use one of the knights (the one with 4 rotating orbs) to destroy as many enemies as possible before falling and rescuing him afterwards. Round 4 has a ton of those enemies who come straight at you from the start.
      Or the classic round 1 last stage cheese with Mud Puppy and spamming the special key while being right next to the boss.
      I think the only character i never found a use for is the general. The flamethrower doesn't feel as good as it should considering his low speed. I feel like the character would be better if you had more control over the flames, instead of it just being 8 directional with a lot of dead zones.

    • @Arial55555
      @Arial55555  Год назад

      @@prismaticpaul The original (arcade) flamethrower was more of a burst-damage weapon. You'd fire it off like a regular weapon instead of holding the button down like in the genesis version, and it'd spew high-damage flames for a few moments in the direction(s) you were holding during the firing time. Any non-boss enemy that took a direct hit from the thing would die basically instantly, no matter its remaining HP- which is saying a lot, since many enemies had significantly higher HP in the Arcade version. Those fast knight guys, in the later stages of World 2? They have 4 HP in the Genesis version, but 9 HP in the Arcade.
      My best use of the flamethrower is on the turrets of 5-8, since it's (kinda) easier to maintain diagonal damage with it than with other weapons. But even then, I can get the job done faster with a Magic Knight, since magic deals double damage.
      My favorite character to use/abuse, however, is Zaemon- the Magic Knight with the Tornado attack. From wall-clipping my whirlwinds to hit enemies on the other side to insta-killing the W4 Tank on spawn, he's the best wild card I could ask for.

      Hey, everyone starts somewhere. Took me playing this game for nearly a decade of my childhood before I even realized there was a blind spot in the upper corner(s) that the spears and archers could abuse with their fast speed, and even longer after that for me to find a video showcasing General using this up-the-middle strat which inspired me to prove that anyone could do it deathless (and a full year after that to learn that anyone can reach that afformentioned upper-corner blind spot, given propper missile manipulation and INV frames!)
      All you got to do is keep trying- keep practicing strategies and theories with level select, and keep learning new things from both your experiences and other people's videos online- and eventually, you can do anything you put your mind to in this game!

      @@ZaylengamingZgame Mine was a Radica Plug & Play. Six games- and Gain Ground, given time, outbeat even Sonic 2. That said, I still sucked at Gain Ground back then. And The Ooze, and Columns, and Ecco The Dolphin, and Alex Kidd.
      But what was important about Gain Ground that separated it from the rest for me was that I believed that even after unlocking the last unique character, and even after seeing every level, there would always still be more to discover. And all these years later, I continue to prove my past-self right- I still find new surprises, even to this day.
      This game will never end, not for me at least. There will always be new Gain Ground things to make videos about, so I won’t be stopping any time soon.

      I used a Keyboard, which is easier to shoot quickly with than a controller is.
      If rapid fire is an issue, try my updated alternative strategy, which uses a blind spot exploit:

      I agree- in fact, without invincibility frames, deathless would be impossible for ANY singular character due to them.
      If this method doesn't tickle you fancy, I recommend Corners Strat- it's significantly safer due to less direct missile manipulation and less strict timing, especially if you use one of the spear/archer characters for their speed.

    Defo cheating no one can shoot that fast

      Yep. No one. Not even this guy who did it faster than me nine years before this video came out:
      ruclips.net/video/TP4OFkHM45U/видео.html
      His strat led me to improving upon my Cheat% Hard World Record (the category in which you level select to the final level and beat the boss as quickly as possible): ruclips.net/video/Nq6Jw_08u-M/видео.html
      The true key to firing fast in this game is the "Weapon Projectile" limit. Each character's weapon has a limit as to how many instances of it are allowed on the screen at a time. For example, Athra can only have two low-ground spears and one high-ground spear active at a time. No matter how fast you fire, you cannot break this limit until your other spear(s) despawn. However, this allows for an easy bypass: if your shots hit something, they despawn. Thus, as long as your shots are constantly and/or instantly hitting enemies, your DPS becomes as fast as you can spam. That's why I get so close to the bosses- so that I don't have to worry about projectile limits, and can focus on mashing buttons as hard as possible in an all-or-nothing gambit.
      And finally, if you still wish to beat this boss, but aren't keen on spamming, you can try my "Method B" strat, which abuses INV frames and a blind spot(s) in the boss' attack pattern: ruclips.net/video/EMfMEtKQ-t8/видео.html
      I do spam in that one (for style points), but it's completely optional given the blind spots.
