Getting an ambulance 🚑 that came from a smaller town, no drug abuse situations 💉, fire department rig 🔥, was always kept indoors 🏬, low miles logged through its lifetime from work... I had never thought about germs/disease. 🦠 🧫 These were all great points 🏆😊 Premium plywood on cabinetry, faced with laminate on both sides, all the joinery is exceptional... Really easy to make it sterile. All the kickboards are stainless steel... All the flooring is a single piece of vinyl... All the seams have been sealed with silicone based embedding compound. Laminate surfaces... No cleaner you can use will damage anything. ⚗️ 🧪 🍋 All mahogany ply, faced on both sides with laminate. They don't cut any corners. It's very clever. Just extremely well made 💪😁 Everything just... *Works* "Traveling at 55 mph on cruise control (much more accurate than foot pedal manipulation), we get 16 and a half miles per gallon!" ⛽ 🚑 Pretty amazing. 😊
Having owned a private ambulance service and later selling ambulances, I can tell you this gentleman got one of the best built units on the market (MEDTEC). It's a shame they don't build them any longer...the structure and build quality of an ambulance body is heads above any box van, small bus or RV.
@j tier Ambulance bodies built by MedTec, Wheeled Coach, McCoy-Miller, and Horton are several good ones right off the top of my head, they're all good quality built units. Hard to say what you could expect to get km wise, depends on who owned it and how well preventative maintenance was performed and if it was "posted" or kept in a station or fire house. The units posted will have an awful lot of idle hours. I personally would steer clear of the 6.0 Ford diesel engine, lots & lots of problems there. Hope some of this helps, good luck!!
I'm retired from EMS 28 years of service, I too oftened thought about converting an ambulance into a camper although I haven't been able to yet. But man...this does bring back memories! :)
I paid $1500 for mine. 1990 military ambulance with 45000 BUT blown tranny Get some serious knowledgeable people around you that’s my advice. Research persons to your build team wicked careful This was my biggest $$loss. Those that present well but are a $$ loss in end. Busy shops subcontracting the job to a slip shod worker or place. Make NO BONES about I want the owners personal hand and accountability on this Rig or it’s going 5 miles down road to competition ….BE more ruthless than you ever gave yourself permission to be.
I picked up a 1995 E350 for $3000 a few years ago and converted it into my work rig. In a few more years when I'm ready to retire, I'll convert it into something like this.
Have seen a few ambulance conversions. Very difficult, if ever, to try and get an inside toilet in. This video of the toilet-shower area nailed it, solving that dilemma!
The 7.3 Powerstroke diesel is a great engine! Make sure, if any future repairs are to happen, to replace your injectors, glow plugs, change the oil and fluids, and you will have the most reliable Navistar International-built engine. 👍
This is perhaps the most perfect vehicle! The low miles, the price, it's fantastic but the thing a person needs to consider on an ambulance, more important than the miles on the odometer, some might have it and some might not, but the engine hours! Because many times ambulances are never shut down from the time a shift begins, until the time that a shift. But there again I small town Department, probably would not run one Non-Stop. But that's a very big consideration, miles might be very very low, while engine hours maybe tremendous, but it sounds like this particular unit is absolutely wonderful! Congratulations sir on such a tremendous find! May God bless you and your family and your travels and always keep you extremely safe! :-)
Love his rig!! I worked in the medical field (surgery) and i love modern, clean lines. Also having worked in an O.R for many years J would feel right at home with all the stainless, sterile, organized feel of this tiny home on wheels. Love it!!
Wow! I mean....Wow! It's just...like....WOW! That is going to outlast him! Damn the luck!😁. 16 miles to the gallon!! !WOW! I've never heard you say you were jealous Bob..lol. ♥
They're built like a tank the storage is phenomenal the maintenance upkeep on them because they were used as an emergency vehicle is exceptional and most of them you can find for less than 100 thousand miles and that is chump change on a 7.3 diesel which is a million mile motor
Thanks, Bob, again. Ambulance thing sounds very convenient and comfortable. Overriding issue for me is fuel consumption which, it seems, I’ll have to look up later, per engine discussed and notes taken. Happy trails. ttyl 🖖
I always wanted an ambulance for my mobile DJ business because of the durability and LOTS of storage. Now that I am retired, it is a perfect vehicle for boondocking. Power outlets built in, heavy duty alternator, and most importantly to me, well insulated. Thank you for sharing an awesome rig!
Durable and solid are the pluses. Negatives are heavy rig for it's available interior space, no headroom - like 5'5" only, and very little interior space considering it's overall size. Looked into these and like everything, it's a compromise.
Im very impressed with this.it seems it was simpler to convert than anything else ive seen in a van.its nice.and yes he does looks and sounds like bill murray to me also(read the comments.
Great rig - hard to beat a set up with so much storage and practical solutions as this. self build-in sink just finishes it off to perfection! I just missed the bed - or did I just not pay enough attention? Very kind down-to-earth man is Paul, very sympathetic. Thanks for sharing Paul and Bob.
Cool truck. An ambulance would be perfect for a custom RV. I really like this one. I just got a 89 uhaul truck with a 14’ box for $1200. It has the 7.3 with a C6 trans, legendary is a good description. This is a great truck. I already put a fantastic fan in it and been staying in it with my dog for almost a week already, trying to get inspiration for my new toy hauler build. Thanks for the video!
Wow, I love this conversion and such a great deal for the ambulance. Now I'm looking for an ambulance, if you find the right one, it can be fun to enjoy the outdoors
Love it! The clean cut interior, all systems in place, high functionality of the existing build. A few small mods and you have a home. The only downside is the low rooftop. Wish they made them a bit higher. Good for midgets, not for tall folks. Still, the best van there is out there. Well done, Paul, good find! Lovely home. I like the shower stall very much. Consider a proper door in there.
I love the idea of converting an ambulance into an RV! I have dreamed of doing the same thing for the same reasons. Thanks for sharing your rig and your story. Happy Trails!
My jaw hit the floor when Paul said he paid five grand for this incredible piece of machinery. I don't know why I did not consider buying an ambulance. I spent 23 years as an Air Force paramedic. OMG. I'd hate to tell you what I paid for my van. Well, I have the next eight years to think about it.
Buddy of mine suggested an ambulance as a camper 2 weeks ago....the search is on. After watching this video I am sooooo excited that I made the right decision FINALLY!! What a great build!! Answered more than a few questions for me....that's why I love your videos :)
10:06 🤔 👍👍 Very Very good point....Kind of like having a T-Grid ceiling in a building to work on stuff or run pipe or run wire and what not. As a retired electrician I can appreciate that.
Love it. Industrial/modern is right up my alley, too. I looked inside an ambulance yesterday. The quality and storage is better than any RV I have seen.
Most of the retired ambulances I see have huge mileage on them, It is probably why you don't see a lot of them converted. The thought of having to step outside to access something from your pantry, speaks the fair weather traveller, that he must be. I think they would probably make for a better tow vehicle simply because it has the ability to stow so much stuff. Most come with seat belts for 4 people, although limited viewing in the back. Finding one with low mileage will be tough. Interesting build.
Omg. I am in love with this also. It speaks to me. I am watching all your videos, Bob, to gleen inspiration and ideas. I love repurposing what is almost there.
Awesome. I love the interior design and that red is so sweet ! And all those compartments and it is insulated for all Seasons, what a good deal you got for $5,000 . The dog seems right at Home. And they are From Vancouver Canada !
I also have an ambulance rv. Finally making progress converting it. Keeping it simple. Yeah. I think if there is any “disease” in it, it’s been frozen in -40 degrees here over the winter. 🥶
I love this! I’m glad to hear you’re getting 16mpg- I just watched another ambulance conversion and he said he’s only getting 10! That kind of dashed my hopes. I’ve been researching van life and what options would be best. I think an ambulance really is the best. People want 5000 bucks for cars and minivans with high mileage and rust! Good job. Great rig.
In a positive light, the ambulances are used to save lives or to transport women in labor to a hospital. A retired ambulance is a good choice for practical reasons. I would buy one if I could.

Met this guy and his wife at the RTR. Parked next to them for three days. Really nice guy.
$5K That’s a steal! The quality is incredible. Imagine the price if that was an RV from the factory
This ambulance owner, Paul, speaks so sweetly of his wife - it’s just precious. He and Bob really seem to enjoy talking to each other. A great tour 🙂
Bob's gonna start shopping for ambulances now. you can hear the passion in his voice!
It did sound as if the interview opened some new ideas to him.
R Ds Maybe but he’s told other people he was envious of their rig too.

I busted my right leg 2 years ago while riding my bike. On my way to hospital, I told the paramedic that this thing will make a neat motorhome.
The dog on his arm looks like a toy! It's so quiet an patient! Cute! Love th e rig!
Wow it's crazy how good an ambulance can be for a camper conversion. Love the outside storage and I love the shower
I picked up a 1995 E350 for $3000 a few years ago and converted it into my work rig. In a few more years when I'm ready to retire, I'll convert it into something like this.
Me too but unfortunately not the 7.3. That is a great Engine! w/16,5 to boot, I wish!!!
Have seen a few ambulance conversions. Very difficult, if ever, to try and get an inside toilet in. This video of the toilet-shower area nailed it, solving that dilemma!
Jenny Eagan I was going to do a dropped floor section in mine
I love this! I have an ambulance that I am converting right now, so this couldn't be more timely! Thanks!
Meandering Maggie l love to see your mobile home 🏡 l love 😍 the ready built. .
16 miles to the Gallon! Wow! So amazing. He and She have done a wonderful job. So happy for them. He is so proud of his home as he should be.
Imperial gallons, Canada, not the fake Yank small gallons.
and now Bob has one too! I'm surprised it took him that long to get one. It's a great idea, maybe someday I will find one
Vandwellers are getting creative. I like the shower.

The Ambulance turned home is an incredible value - sturdy with well thought out storage features
They're built like a tank the storage is phenomenal the maintenance upkeep on them because they were used as an emergency vehicle is exceptional and most of them you can find for less than 100 thousand miles and that is chump change on a 7.3 diesel which is a million mile motor
They're also insulated like crazy. A friend lived in an ex ambulance. In -20 weather he only needed to burn a couple candles to keep warm.
Thanks, Bob, again. Ambulance thing sounds very convenient and comfortable. Overriding issue for me is fuel consumption which, it seems, I’ll have to look up later, per engine discussed and notes taken. Happy trails. ttyl 🖖
Paul you just really rocked your home. Love it fantastic !!! Thanks for the tour
Just awesome. I can't get over how clever some folks are!
I can't get over how cute his dog is!!!!!!

Yep, a unit with a 14' box and 72" inside height helps. But then you would have a larger overall rig. Tradeoffs.
I like the more clean(And easy to clean) interior without all the wood. And all the storage. It was a great find all around. Thanks for showing us.
Yeesss! Right up my street. I also live in an ambulance, they are fantastic bases for tiny homes.
Best I’ve seen so far. $5,000 is amazing!
Im very impressed with this.it seems it was simpler to convert than anything else ive seen in a van.its nice.and yes he does looks and sounds like bill murray to me also(read the comments.
I'm not partial to a modern style, but I absolutely love this! I definitely could go this route.
And, in time, Bob DID buy his own ambulance! It seems like this was the day that started.
5k for that rig is an amazing deal
Yes it is! The motor alone with those miles is worth that!
RobertJLessard ain't it though?
Great rig - hard to beat a set up with so much storage and practical solutions as this. self build-in sink just finishes it off to perfection! I just missed the bed - or did I just not pay enough attention? Very kind down-to-earth man is Paul, very sympathetic. Thanks for sharing Paul and Bob.
Beautiful rig! I would buy this in a heartbeat 💗
My son just ought a 1997 E350 Ambulance for,,,,,,,, $1000!!!! Town paid $102,000 back in the day & it's it GREAT SHAPE.
Super RV! Well built. Quality surfaces. Low maintenance. Cheap as chips!

Great rig setup! My compliments for such a great build out! Great work, Paul!
I'm really impressed with this rig.
Bob, he stays in it but it is not a HOME! A terrific camper to go out in for the weekend!

Its Bill Murray!
Joe John he even sounds like him to me,lol

Joe John his voice sounds like Bill’s eh?

I just commented same.

Looks to be a very durable van conversion for $5k hard to beat. Bob finally got himself one now. Wouldn't mind one for myself.
A great home!

Great tour. I’m convinced. I see why you bought one Bob.
I have a 1999 F350 7.3 with 385,000. 50k is nothing! happy travels
I have a 1996 7.3 diesel with 174k.
Wow!!!!
This is impressive! I love it!!!!!
Sweetest little doggie.
It’s Sunday February 3rd 2019. That’s cool living in an Ambulance Glad you aren’t sick or Hurt
Now that is a ready made home vehicle - those ambulance features are advantageous 😊
That is awesome..And a hell of a deal! Wow!!!😊
Very nice .I've always wanted an ambulance.
Be safe out there.
Wow, I learned something. Never occured to me that an ambulance would be perfect.
What a fantastic build
Great year! I graduated from high school in 1998!
Nice Deal, Ambulances are quality made , I would paint it ,that's the only different thing I'd do..thanks Bob , sharing this one
Very, very nice. This looks like it would be a comfortable home.
Paul has a Bill Murray look going for him.
Fantastic deal you got. It's a cute little mobile cabin.
In a positive light, the ambulances are used to save lives or to transport women in labor to a hospital. A retired ambulance is a good choice for practical reasons. I would buy one if I could.
This one is my favorite! I love it. I will remember this one for future reference!
This is the best thing I've ever seen for tinyhome living! Wow!
To answer a little better about sanitation of ambulance...bacteria can only live on a suface for like 48 houurs and the worst of the worst a week with alot of moisture kinda like mold...i looked into that before purchase.. just got one very similar to his with 4x4 ..i was un the back of it in 104 temp 2 days ago and it was staying suprisingly cool..one thing to think about as to why these are a good choice is the rollover videos of ambulace that has roll cages built in vs rv or vans..these are made to withstand crashes with patients in back...the crash videos show a massive plus side to going with an ambulance
Hep C virus lives up to 30 days in drop of blood. Some bacteria has an endospore that protects them etc check out micobiology
Viruses, in general need a nice warm, quiet, dark, moist place to reproduce...like inside a cell. So most of them don't last long outside. But there are exceptions like Calicivirus which gives you stomach flu, it can be out there for weeks. Bacterium can reproduce outside the cellular environment. Staph Aureus builds an exoskeletaon and can live for weeks. Bacillus anthracis forms spores and can survive hundreds of years. TB, if protected from light...over two months on surfaces or in carpet. Tetanus spores are almost everywhere and can last for years. Moral of the story? Wash your hands. Wipe down surfaces.

Apparently the 'dirtiest' thing we use these days is our computer keyboard....
I’m hooked. This is amazing. I want it!❤️🇨🇦❤️
This is fantastic! I can’t believe it was just $5000- going to be looking at ambulances now. Great job.
Beautiful and looks very well built. Love everything about it!
I’ve scrolled past this video a number of times because “it’s an ambulance”. Now that I’ve seen it, I want one.
These are brilliant for a camper very well built I complement the people who made them 👍👍
Super rig!
Good job Paul on your rig! Well built and insulated are key factors to a rig! Great interview Bob!💕
Very well thought out. Thanks for sharing. 🚘👍
Where CheapRV was inspired to get an Ambulance!
I love it. I am looking for a rig like that. I am 100% disabled and with that being all complete. just adding a few things would be manageable for me. finding a rig that nice would be hard though, I wouldn't even know where to start.
That's a lot of storage! ...probably more than my apartment had. Nice tour and nice rig. Better gas mileage than I'd expect too. Has anyone asked to borrow a Band-Aid yet?
