- Did you know about the Netflix live-aciton winx club series? Because I sure did. After you guys have been messaging me every day ever since the trailer released, how could I not? Here's my review.

And the way they became friends was very realistic all except Stella were all close with some being closer than the others it took Stella having a heartfelt conversation with musa to open up to the rest plus Stella wasnt as bad as I thought she didn't bully terra which is the stereotypical thing to do. This was unique

It's actually kind of hilarious how obsessed this reboot is with looking woke, when they literally stripped the entire cast of its diversity, and instead opted to whitewash the hell out of it.
Exactly, they really thought they were doing something.
Original cartoon: 3 white girls, an Asian girl, a Latina girl and an African-American girl.
Fate: Winx : F*ck all a that! We're gonna scrap that and pretend to be diverse!
When it's clear your show is being "diverse" just for the points, it kinda defeats the point of being diverse.
But hey, let's destroy the "patriarchy". Yup, we're in the clear. We can be as narrow-minded as we want. We expressed hatred for the patriarchy.
And the only new diversity is having flora be plus size white woman.
And even with that they make her get the shit. Like people just hate her for no reason.
Like the added bit of diversity is just getting it tough. In these angst shows can plus size women just be happy!?
What does that way for the plus size women watching? “Don’t be confident people don’t like you because you’re fat”?

The original had problems (I can't remember if Sky ever had consequences for dating Bloom while being engaged to Diaspro, it's like, he's engaged even if reluctantly so he was cheating on both, but never got chewed out for it??) but Fate is just another cringey-woke-"adult" clusterf*ck adaptation that was clearly made by someone who either hasn't seen the source, or just doesn't give a f*ck.
Out of all the edgy teen reboots out there , i never expected Winx Club to be one of them.
Yep. It's like trying to make Yu-Gi-Oh into a dark teen reboot.

idk how much uve seen.. but they dont hate each other they just.., dont love everyone instantly. Musa is rly stressed from Emotions and so since Tera is a rly Emotional character ofc they have their problems. Bloom on the hand is rly stressed she just found out shes a fairy and that prob made her sceptical. Stella got her Mommy issues (dont wanna spoil if u havent watched it through yet) but in the end, they do like each other.
I understand it’d be unrealistic if they were just bffs right off the bat but they made them all so mean to each other it ended up feeling forced when they were acting like sisters in the last episode.

I feel like east-Asian are more imaginative nowadays (they don’t have the edgy depressive vibe too). But since they are too cheesy and slow paced for me, I can’t watch them either. I feel like I don’t belong anywhere lmao.
It’s like “black” is the only diverse thing they know. They want diversity? Toss in a black girl. Never have I ever seen brown Asian or many Asians in movie/series. Always black and white. Mostly white. And the thing is this cartoon HAD PROPER diversity. They had Asian, black,white and Latina. That’s what made it interesting.

I'm still sad Aisha isn't a princess in Fate...she's legit just a side character in the live action
And to do this on top of bringing her in early to hide the fact that they white washed everyone else (I truly believe they took out Tecna because if they left her in the entire main cast would be white until they brought Aisha in, and by that time the show would have already been cancelled, either by Netflix or by social mwdia

I have cousins who are Japanese, that doesn't make me Japanese, and I would be a racist prick if I said I was. Besides the fact that her actress isn't latina in the slightest, but trying to pretend her character is. I'm sure that the actress herself had her reasons, there are loads of desperate actors trying to make their debut, but I wish someone had the foresight to see that this kind of controversy could end a career and it's completely the companies fault

I really hate what they did and her not having a bf or a crush is just feeding the stereotype of the undesirable black girl. I don't like it... And Netflix really think they did a good job in term of ethnic diversity by adding a black girl and treating her as a secondary character with no story. Even the teacher of the specialists has a story !

Solaria is referred to as a realm
Stellas mother recognizes Aisha and is nice to her
way more than Stella , I definitely dont think she would be nice to a commoner

Aisha also never talked about her family at all
so its entirely possible they could retcon her into being a princess when they actually do it
The show seemed intentionally vague
Stella being a princess only comes up because she says it and her mother appears and is a active part of the story
so its likely Aisha can be too

Yet there are people believe it or not, who say "give it a chance it's only the first season" blah blah, the show makers already took a bad turn when they whitewashed the cast and cut some iconic characters out. Like it's 2021, the Winx Club came about 15 years ago( not really sure on the correct date 😅) and yet this cartoon was so unique in its way (from the first season) in contrast to other kids cartoons at that time, so u would think that the live action should be the same, we are not kids anymore let's see how could it look like in "our real life" and then we got this...
Italian here, grew up with Winx, saw every episode of the original series. THIS is insulting to literally all parts involved. The old fans feel betrayed and disappointed, the new ones are getting a trite, subpar cashgrab of a show and the actresses are playing characters that have been stripped of their original personalities. And don't get me started on the representation and wokeness bit. ARGH- Don't TELL us you're "wOkE", SHOW US! Give us strong, well written female characters, racially diverse, with different body types! WHO IS TERRA???? Why couldn't they get us a plus size latina to play Flora? What was wrong with having an asian actress for Musa? WHERE THE HECK is Tecna?! And why is everything so effing drab?! It's a magical world, coming from an animated show for kids. Give me pops of color, give me quirky and whimsical stuff, not that failed dark academia crap!

It's also effed up that, with all the sex, they're basically telling teens that, "Oh yeah this is normal have sex all the time it's not like you'll get diseases or anything" Like people should stop normalizing sex so much. It's fine but in reality not EVERYONE has sex and only a minority really do so this makes it SO unrelatable UGH.
I watched the Nick version of Winx club and I know everyone has a version of it that they like or dislike but at least all the cartoon versions stuck with the orginal plot and character. I had liked the show but had to see it as a different story from winx and stopped comparing it.

I just watched the First episode and was SO dissappointed...
I used to watch it with a Cousin of mine when we were kids and I loved all of it! The diversity, the fairy environment, the style of the characters even the villains were freaking cool!
But Fate really didn't wanna stick with the original they just tried to make it "more appealing to Teenagers who watched the show when they were younger and can now even more relate to it" kinda thing...which is just ...wrong...
Maybe there will be another remake someday, and they will do it better but this is really not the way to do it.

It's not very popular sadly. And the original Winx is pretty dark go watch seasons 1 to 3.

RIGHT, like Aisha’s personality was relatable and nice in the cartoon, but they made her such a basic stereotype in the live action.
Not only that except being an athlete and being a perfectionist, we know nothing about her. She's just here to support the other characters.
I Hope we will have her own narrative arc in Season 2.

I think a lot of that is owed to the length of the season, we didn't get much time to get to know any of the characters, except bloom of course, as always, and I think that's really sad. We didn't have enough time to get invested in the characters and their relationships with one another, and if they hadn't mentioned the passage of time several times I would have thought the whole show only covered a time span of maybe a week or two, not months.
Fans: "We don't want that!"
Netflix: "We don't care!"
The show lost me 5 minutes in when the obvious love interest offered to help the main character and she just drops the "mansplaining" claims off the bat.

It shouldn't even be like this if they wanted to make it dark, they just needed to linger a bit on the darker themes the original. It would have been so easy to dig into Bloom's genocide survivor or Aisha's everything in the 2nd season or how half the cast dies getting Enchantix.

Yes! I loved the guys soo much! All of them had growth and development with the girls and each pair was complementary and had to learn from each other as a couple (especially Musa and Rivers) I was telling my parents how winx club taught me so much about positive and healthy romantic relationships as a kid which is something that I’m constantly preaching needs to be in children’s media today!! 100% haven’t even see the live action remake yet but from the clips all the guys give me “there for sex alone” vibes

And making the characters racially diverse too. Flora was Latina, Aisha/Layla was black, and Musa was Asian. Then, for the boys, Nabu was a POC (I was never sure what specific race he was, but ye), Helia was Asian, And I'm fairly certain Riven was a POC, too. It was surprisingly racialy diverse for the tme period, and I loved it for that.
Them adding gore and sex for the M rating just makes it more immature.
And drugs... People seem totally fine with it but it's weird having them smoking weed and eating space cakes.
Gore, sex and cuss words are like cinnamon.
It can be great to include a little in some recipes, but not every dish needs it, it can taste disgusting in others and if you overdo it, it will render the food unedible and an umpleasant experience all around.

Can we talk about fairies having instagram. So what they make insta stories about magic anf they can be leaked to the human world? Why wouldnt they create their own equivalent of instagram but from the magic world. They put so little though into it.

So if they wanted to make it more actual i guess it makes sense to include social media, but they could have been smarter about it, making it different to what humans use. In the original winx they had holograms and tecna did use lots of alien like tech. That would have been cool

Yup, same here. I kinda feel like I shouldn't comment, cause I grew up with the WB's Winx Club and I saw a bit of the newer Winx Club shows. It didn't feel like the ones I grew up with.
So, I'm not really shocked they went that way with the live action.
For me, it kinda deviated from the original a long time ago.

I hate this because as an Asian girl growing up I was roleplaying my friend as Musa, my redhead friend played Bloom, and my black friend played Aisha. So my disappointment was immeasurable.
I actually related tomusa most because she related to me a lot and techna music is one of the things that really kept me going also I was in tech at a really young age and techna also I related a lot to even tho those two aren’t my race

Legit, I had the same freund group it was scary. 😂 Except I was the black bloom in my group. I had a red head friend, a blond friend, an Asian friend from the Philippines and a smart black friend. The fake representation kills me, I loved the Winx and the friendship they all ha together and the good they did.
Can’t say I’m even a little surprised. The trailer on Netflix basically played like a literal checklist of reasons NOT to watch it. Can’t wait for the dark gritty reboot of Strawberry Shortcake.

So this show is baffling.
Ehhh they still have far far more live action stuff also anime is kind of weird and not really considered the same as western animation and dragon prince was made by the creators of avatar which is largely considered one of the best pieces of western animation. They thought those projects were surefire and even a lot of those kind of flopped if memory serves. It definitely feels like they tried for a while put out some flops and then said well clearly people don’t like animation so we’ll just do live action. Aside from dragon prince and seven deadly sins has any of their “original” animation really had any success at all

Apparently so...
I personally just wanted Winx, the way it originally was, but for the show to go a little bit deeper and not be QUITE as happy go lucky as the cartoon. Even then, the cartoon was perfect because it was bright and not depressing, but also had impactful moments like the death of some characters. I know adaptations change things, but to me this is some random fairy show rather than a Winx Club reboot.

Its so clear that FATE is just trying to capitalise on Winx's preexisting fanbase to make up a completely different story. The world building is so LAZY compared to the source material. There is no escapism to a "magical realm" that resembles this world in every single way. The pop culture references are not only annoying but make no sense. They reference shit like Enya and some memes but then make it a point to point out how Bloom is an outsider who is from the "First world" and that there are only a few fairies who reside there. IF THAT IS THE CASE HOW DO THEY UNDERSTAND OUR MEMES AND REFERENCES? why doesn't the magical realm have their own pop culture and own versions of things? Its so frustrating that they're not even trying.. The irony of it all is them referencing Harry Potter in the first episode. HOW DO THEY KNOW HARRY POTTER? Why would Harry Potter even be a thing in a world that is made of magic?? it would be such a boring story for these fairies because it would literally just be daily life. Besides that Harry Potter has infinitely better world building than Fate and the magical world has an entirely distinct culture from that of the muggle world.

When it comes to these 'dark gritty reboots' the creators always seem to lean too heavily into the angst and edge and too soon. Beloved series that were known for their dark themes and depth of character e.g. The Last Airbender, Teen Titans, BTA, etc. (action cartoons basically) were not known for being constantly dark and depressing. They were balanced shows with a lot of humour and character moments that made you give a crap before things got super dark. Another issue of course is the way these reboots seem to ignore the basic core themes of the original or fail to meaningfully subvert them which makes it come across like it's just wearing the skin of the old property due to lack of creativity, a potential boost of viewership from controversy or simple brand recognition. None of which is indicative of good writing ability. I understand it's probably harder to market but I'd really appreciate more well rounded shows because I feel like the dark moments hit harder and even the fun moments are more meaningful that way. The best modern example that comes to mind is 'Doom Patrol'. It was pretty heavily angst focused yet it had funny and irreverent moments too that only improved it.

In the show, Bloom said she was born December 2004 so she's basically 16 yrs old and then cut to the shot of them playing beer pong and getting drunk.

I binged all episodes and I did enjoy myself a bit, the plot is fun, but the characters are just not it!

I actually wanted to give that showa try, but at the same time I wouldn't because Tecna is not in it. She's my all time favorite character in the series ever since I was 9, and I'm so disappointed that they did not add her.
I think the reason they erased Tecna is because of her power. Unlike the original where they combined a magic world with technology, the winx saga is a more generic fantasy series, so tecna with el power don't really "fit in".

It was created by the same dude that made The Vampire Diaries. After knowing that, I lost all hope for this show not being a dramatic disaster.
EDIT: Brian Young wasn't the creator for The Vampire Diaries but he is the producer. He also created Winx Saga and is pushing it to follow the same flow that TVD did, which is why I really dislike the show, as the drama and the "girls vs. girls except for when the main character wins" is just not a formula I find interesting at all.

My thought after watching the trailer was literally "Aside from having Winx in the title and some characters/buildings/whatever being called the same, this is a completely different show and story. And it _sucks_ too."
Its just a bit sad. It feels like that they created the show after someone gave them a written summary of the show of an old lady with dementia. And based on that they created whatever that is meant to be. I think its a shame that noone in the film industry seems to take cartoons/comics/"kids content" serious. And they believe they can butcher any beloved franchise in their chase for money and appealing to "young adults".
And if I would be still 16 or whatsoever I might would have even liked it.
There where honestly so many moments where I thought with a little bit more thought and appreciation of the original content they could have keept telling their story and still making the og fans happy.
Just as an example. I believe any "real" winx fan remembers or at least knowledge the moment when all winx are together in the first season after an exiting adventure and bloom comes up with the name for the club. Thats when we know its official and they have bonded a great a true friendship with many more adventures to come.

The switched at birth thing was where I quit. The 4Kids dub of the show came out about a year after I was adopted myself, so Bloom's adoption was a big part of what drew me in to the show. In those days, it was hard to find good representations of adoption. Especially in children's media. The fact that they changed that just really upset me, because it was something that had meant so much to me as a child.
Sigh don't let this bs raise your blood pressure. Just search up some alternatives (I find that foreign shows execute topics like that (more mature topics) and fantasy animation waaaaay better than America ever could, so you might just find a gem)
In a lot of country’s mythology she was not adopted. She’s a changing meaning she was replaced by force. In some cultures and myth a changing is a child of the devil replaced at birth with out the parents know king. Some a elf’s living inside the human body. Bloom being a changing suits the theme of the show.

I really want the western animation industry to actually understand why anime is so popular; it's because it's stories for that age group, but animated! It doesn't have to be grim and dark and intense for teens/young adults to enjoy it, it just has to be interesting, visually or storywise (ideally both but I'm giving them a low bar). Animation isn't a lesser medium for "lowbar" content, it's a legit art form that deserves respect and should be utilised more.
The new Riverdale reboot would work 1000% better if it was animated ! The weird tonal whiplash, musical scenes for no reason etc would all flow together better if they were animated! Ditto the Sabrina remake !
Hell, I think (J.K Rowling's fuckery aside) they should do an animated Harry Potter series! They could do a prequel mini series for the james/lily era with an older style of animation (2d, anime style, etc) and then flash us forward a few years to the books timeline, and do a year/book a season! They could really go all out in stylization of the magical creatures, main characters etc, without having to worry about aging actors, schedules etc as much. And it would be way more immersive to get to spend that much time in Hogwarts, and you could include so many things missed out of the movies, and have flying or fight scenes be presented in so many different ways, whereas a live action series would just be disappointing due to budget restraints etc.
(edit: i want to add that theres nothing wrong with making gritty dark reboots of shows. i dont care which direction the reboots goes insofar as tone, i just wish they would actually consider the source material and the fan's interests over the for some reason Default of "Adult Show = Horny and Guns, No Fun Allowed" trend rn. if a beloved kids/teens TV show is beloved because of the marrying of bright aesthetics to a dark plot or the inverse, or the fans loved the fashion and diversity (like the winx club), dont erase those things in the reboot and get angry at fans when they were clear about what parts of the show drew them in to begin with! As an example; fans (like myself) loved the Artemis Fowl bookseries as it was a Zuko-style redemption Arc told from the perspective of Zuko himself (intensely simplified but you get the gist lol) where the main character was NOT the hero for the first 2-3 books at least, before becoming a better person without fundamentally changing him into an unrecognisable person, while the movie scrapped all of that in favour of flashy visuals and a Feel-good tone, which is completely AGAINST the OG source material. i would have much preferred a "dark teen" reboot of Artemis Fowl than the KidsBop version we got, because it would actually fit the story.)

One thing that gets me extremely mad about the entertainment industry in America nowadays is that apparently, animation is "childish" and meant for kids. I miss when shows like Winx Club appealed to all audiences, but hinted at more mature themes (growing up, romantic relationships, etc.) I wish we had more shows like that. My dream is to get into the entertainment industry and I want to create interesting and complex stories using animation. I also want to add more diversity and cultures in media since we need more representation. It's nice when everyone has a character to relate to when they watch their favorite show, because it's like seeing yourself in their world. I absolutely love anime and it's sad that the entertainment industry doesn't really understand why it's so popular. I really, really hope the industry changes someday and animation will be treated as an art form and NOT a genre meant "for kids"

Agreed, even for ‘ darker ‘ anime’s, it never reaches the point where you feel like it’s trying too hard to be edgy. In all of these live actions, they add in smoking and s*x just to make the show ‘ edgy ‘ to appeal to teens.
I am pretty sure there are many people in the western animation industry that want to make stories like that, but the people who hold the resources, higher ups, say no, it's really frustrating not to mention it's not respected as a medium by the general population.

Want a darker Winx while being faithful to the original? Show injuries the cartoon had to censor, make the sacrifices for their Enchantix clearer they are _sacrifices_ with weight, make the villains like Darkar more visually terrifying or address character flaws like Sky continuously lying to Bloom about huge things like his identity and engagement and how this impacts her trust in him or how Fairagonda may have had good intentions but her hiding everything from Bloom make them question if Fairagonda can be trusted.
Give me the candy factory bright colour schemes and visual contrast that helped tell the story in the original.
That games, films and graphic novels have used to immerse fans in their stories and make them pay attention to what the story creators want them to see or feel as a scene slowly goes from lively yellows to bruised blues to create that slow feeling of dread.
Heck, have the cases of characters suffering from dark magic be visually nightmarish, like seeing Fairagonda be in pain as she is helpess to stop her being turned into a tree and leave fans feeling stunned at how horrific and disturbing it was to watch her skin turn to bark like Dipper in that episode of Gravity Falls were a ghost turns people into trees.
Give me a live action version of Winx Club, without the censorship, that makes people think again about the small details we overlooked in the original.
Give me _that_ adult Winx Club adaptation.

@@luisquezada2059 They reversed the ages of the characters in the 8th season as this explains the radically different artstyle which they tested in merch and implemented in World of Winx. The latter had the characters in their early 20's so it boggles my mind why de-age them in season 8. As of now, they are back in their mid-teens and attending Alfea again despite in earlier season them aging, being in relationships, graduating, etc..
Even tho the fact that they are portraying underage girls is still a huge reason why those scenes should not be showed. It’s overall uncomfortable.

I only watched three episodes so correct me if I’m wrong. The thing I’m most mad about is that they got rid of flora and techna. Flora is my favorite character in winx and I really wanted to see her in the show. I could see that the show wanted to include more body types but no one would care if they made flora not skinny.

I feel like some of these "remake" shows should just stop pretending they have anything to do with the originals besides their names. Just name it something else and admit it's a completely different story line. Slapping a well know name on some random whatever won't make it more successful by association it will only bring it under more scrutiny.
It makes me so mad that they whitewashed musa and flora, everytime I think about it my blood boils. I was gonna say "at least aisha's black" but they shouldn't be congratulated for casting a black woman to play a play woman like that is just normal, that is the bare minimum.
Stella wasn't cocky in the cartoon... especially since she got left back a year for poor grades/attendance.
She was definitely cocky and she was completely dismissive of her mistakes like blowing up classrooms. She'd also frequently make situations about herself which her friends had to point out on occasion.

W.I.T.C.H. was a lot better than this. All the girls had issues but they were recognized as flaws. They each got a lot of focus (at least in the graphic novel), they had realistic feelings and relationships. It was written by people who understood teenage girls.
What makes me sad is that I know Umbrella Academy wouldn't be as popular if the show used the same style as the comics

I think Winx is a pretty basic show (I remember watching and loving, but I remember almost nothing from the story), but that works! The problem with the remake, it's just trying to drive in everyone's nostalgia and making something so different that doesn't even resembles the original show, and that's sad...
The first season wasn’t the greatest, but the show overall has a lot of material that could be expanded on to make a decent story. I lowkey feel like the netflix producers can’t even do that though.

And i find it hilarious how they tried SO SO hard to make it dark and mature when the og had it down already with bloom discovering she's the sole survivor of a mass genocide that happened to her kingdom Aisha trying to prevent the same thing happening to her OWN kingdom (Which leads to her having near death experiences down the road) Stella parents divorcing ACTUAL DEATH (yes there was in fact character death in the show no it wasn't anime styled or gruesome but there was a clear indicator) i could go on but i might just leave it at that.

the rare instance of a good animated children's show turned live action is Sailor Moon cuz it kept the child marketed appeal of Sailor Moon while just fleshing out the one arc of the story and focusing on the characters more.

WaterlemonTheArtist Yeah, it was released only in japan and has fansubs. It is named Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon or PGSM in fan terms. It is a early 2000s setting live action tokusatsu show of Sailor Moon that takes place only in the Dark Kingdom arc and centers the plot on the main cast coming to grips with their magical girl lives and discovering friendship/unity. It is a very neat adaptation that takes the essence of sailor moon and packs it a more simple and meaningful story. The main show PGSM itself is what Sailor Moon fans need to see if they feel like needing something different to watch Sailor Moon wise but spiritually accurate.

you know the way you said mature in this video has got me thinking lets all start describing these types of shows as "rated MATURE". not rated R, or nc-17 or whatever but as mature, as in we are now the "mature" version of this show, we're "mature" because now we have violence, cursing, sex, and are edgy but in reality are using all those things so half-hazardly to seem adult that we in turn become more childish then the show "made for kids"
LOL the girls being rude to each other and totally failing at the "awkward first meeting" was SO mature. I watched the first episode too and the only ok character for me, so far as i haven't watched the rest, is Terra.

I'm so glad you made this. I was hoping to see you do it! I don't really agree about the special effects and I actually liked the characterization of the original better, but I really enjoyed your video and agree with your points as a whole!
