I was able to determine that a WW2 shell a friend had was inert, thanks to one of your prior video's, there wasn't any fuse and and the brass rifling was etched from the shot. Scored a nice piece of history ! Smart move clarifying the fuse drilling. Thanks
This is so neat. I love learning new things especially from old wars. Everything I watch your videos I feel taken back into history.
Hey Beau, thanks for answering my question about de-fuzing the shell! Now I know how it is done with wooden fuzes.
Good video. Very well explained. Now all I have to do is find a cannon shell!
Maybe a shop vac could suck the fuse out if you could get a good seal around it. But if it did, the fuse could get damaged if it go sucked into the shop vac.
Thanks for explaining this process so clearly. I found it very interesting.
Thumbs up!
Cheers,
These how to videos are very helpful, not everybody knows how to deal with these old shells. Thanks Beau
So much more information in this second video, thanks Beau.
Great advice ! Always have a professional disarm it or look at it if you are unsure.
Informative video on releasing the plug. Oak is my guess.
Thanks for the tip!
Awesome video Beau thanks so much for sharing!
LOVE YOUR VIDS WISH I LIVED AROUND CIVIL WAR STUFF LIKE YOU ONE DAY I WILL GO CIVIL WAR HUNTIN KEEP THE VIDS COME AWESOME GL & HH
Your workshop looks amazing
I realize this was 4 years ago, but that is Beau's basement. It is full of his finds, 40 years worth :>)
Thanks for the info have a wonderful day karla
Love all your videos thanks for uploading
I like the revised video great job on each of them.have you done one on the cleaning of small items like coins and do you need to clean the minie balls.being lead.
Great video very informative. Thanks for posting it.
Great video beau loved the tutorial
Great video both times !
Yo Beau, Very well explained...good interesting video, cheers,G;)
As always, thanks’ for taking the time to make this video! And I support this site. ~M~
So I should drill this things at home? I can do it myself? Fantastic. Thanks.
Ugh! Should have shot this video as you were processing that shell, end to end. Would have loved to see that. Still fun to watch.
Agreed! Would make a very interesting video. ~M
i love your videos there awsome lol plz keep makeing them
Beautiful wall in the background
very cool video beau.. what kind of people or shop will do that for you.. it don't matter anyway cause I think you have found all the artillery shells out there lol.. awesome video thanks for sharing.. good luck and happy hunring...
ok sounds good haven't found one yet still searching might be awhile lol... good luck and happy hunting..
beau i was wanting to start metal detecting as there is a abondoned and demolished factory behind my house and it is just something i find interesting so i was wondering if you had a specific recommended brand of metal detector, thanks
You might be able to use an air compressor and a blowgun to pressure the shell and pop the fuze out. I have unloaded muzzle loaders this way I think it might work for this application.
***** hey do you sell your things or you dont but im asking you have world war 2 shells or any world war 2 things
That one looks fake like its made in china.
I've always wondered how you do this!
Nice video as always :)
Interesting video Beau. The shells could still explode after all this time wow. Have you let one go in the interests what it would sound like. Now that would be video and a half lol. Great video as normal . Nice one Dave
Nice...thanks.
Much better video explination this time.
If the hole was drilled elsewhere, could you use compressed air to blow the wood fuse out?
Is the hole in the wood plug one that you made when you disarmed the shell or is it the diameter of the paper fuse that was inserted in the plug. Thanks, I watch all of your videos.
Cool video Beau as always this was very interesting thank you for sharing and your right let the Pros defuse them HH&GL an God Bless
Awesome! Now all I have to do is find one...
Dude, do you wash your hair with Miracle Gro? that's a head of hair you got there! Keep the videos coming, love 'em
OK well the wind is blowing hard here in michigan so we can send that snow your way by air mail Lol...
Beau how about some snow pictures from your area please.
Need a new video. I'm going threw Beau Ouimette withdraw. Guess i will go back and watch some of the older ones again.
I wonder if there would be any benefit to making a small slide-hammer onto his modified file tool???
So I may be stupid Beau, but can these things still explode after all those years?
Beau i can find many pretty old bottles in michigan some medicine bottles i hunt them but i have the same problem you do EVERYTHING is frozen
Took me a while to finally watch this because I don't expect to find any in northern Ohio, but....it was very interesting.
LOL, try Western Washington. Not much older history here, most things are new!
Definitely no cool Civil War stuff around here :(
***** Oh wow, Thanks for that link! Obviously I knew there were settlers, but I guess I didnt realize how many.
Theres an old railroad that cut through the mountains at the turn of the century. Its abandoned now, along with one of the longest railroad tunnels in the US. Ive been there, and its a beautiful hike. It never occurred to me at the time to metal detect it. I wonder what I could find?!
I always wanted to get into metal detecting but never made the plunge, maybe this is the push that I needed. Thanks Beau!
Obviously from the comments, some people did not listen to your video very well! Maybe they need to listen again.
Methinks that for some English is their second language. And a distant second at that.
What surprises me is that you can just walk into a shell driller's shop with a live artillery shell and he'll drill it out for you. Granted, it will probably be wet enough inside so it won't go boom, but... isn't that kind of still walking around in public with a weapon of war under your arm? Here in germany they would probably put you in jail for that, haha. When you find an unexploded world war bomb here, you have to call the cops and not touch it any further
***** Hehe yes they do the same here, they are thankful enough though that it wasn't a kid who found it and blew up. Doesn't cost you as the "finder" anything too, but it kind of screws with your schedule, so you can report them anonymously.
Luckily most bombs like this are found in forests here so they don't have to shut down too much. But sometimes they are found while digging foundations for new buildings and then they detonate them on site and evacuate the area.
***** That is not true. You don't have any warranty what is inside... and this is main rule with ammunition works. I was seen many pieces of body - and it was very experienced peoples.
Michał Majchrowicz Well, you mite be right what with all the time travel our goverment has been doing..I would not be surprized at all to find out a goverment agent did travel back in time to provide modern explosives to the arms makers. Just so that You can claim that we do not know that thay had these types of arms back then, and we just do not know it today. IT is knowen, today what was in these old black powder arms..Black powder..Nothing else that is going to go boom!! LOL you really know your stuff sapper,,there is a reason why they do not let you do much , with what you are working with.
Black powder can be dangerous too... if is good condition and you have a something on screw thread... and you try to unscrew it... boom.... the same situation for trotyl... you can burn it in fire, but on screw thred from trigger... can kill you.
***** hi Beau... I hope you and the wife are doing good... I have a video request, if you do request... I know that you have been metal detecting for years, actually I think i have heard you say nearly 40... will you make a video showing us how Aqua Chigger has evolved through the years... maybe show some of your first finds and some of the stuff that got you hooked on detecting.... do you still have your first metal detector? What are your personal favorite finds? I think this would be a very interesting video... thank you my friend!
Dejavu all over again. Good info. Still can seem to figure out how these things ever worked. How could a wooden plug (fuse) burn through and set it off. Wouldn't that take a long time? How would you even get the fuse lit before launching it?
Did I miss this video Beau? *****
What about a bearing puller, or slide hammer?
Good TIPS, If I were to ever find One :/ I am planning a Feb Trip to TN. to Look For some Civil War Artifacts,so maybe stumble on 1 there! BTW-- I can't remember if you have any videos of cannon balls found land-detecting.If so can you link'em -If you would be so kind ;))Do they ring in on at gold/at pro the same about?
Meant in water VS on land!!srry
carminesr1, I'm in Tennessee and live near a large Civil War battlefield. I'd love to meet up with someone who knows what he's doing.
Jeff Rielley That's Ironic--cuz I would like to detect with someone that lives near a civil war battlefield --LOL!! Seriously--you guys have some nice locations from I've Researched--NOT to give anything away --you should just message me!There may be a locals groups hunt going at the end of FEb also
Actually wouldn't conductive heat work better for that. Slowly heating the front end of the shell, expanding it while the wood fuse dries up and shrinks, pulling away from the metal? Or would that damage the shell or the fuse?
***** You are a very patient man, Beau. ;)
I don't want to disrespect Beau's channel by feeding into troll like behavior, but if you are going to exhibit such behavior at that age, learn the difference between radiant and conductive heat. What I was referring to was a heating element coiled around the front of the shell where no heat is applied directly to the wood fuse, thus drying slower with less stress on wood, resulting in easier separation. Keep your snide comments to your own posts.
Speaking of snide...
My apologies but I don't think I deserved the original off putting comment either. My post to Beau was well meaning with no bad intentions.
After reading the comments - most seem to think that all the shells are found sunk in a river. Not always - some are dug up in dry land. Sometimes by a metal detectorist and sometimes by construction workers.
***** The guys looking for them on dry ground hold their hands over both ears and stomp the ground
Where do i find the professional
What are average fee to defuse?,and how does one go about finding someone to do it ?
I was wondering also where you would find someone with insurance at a shop to do that ! lol
+BannisterHall .farm red jacket arms
I have one. And every time I shake it it sounds like a Morocco. You think it could live still? Its super old.
Beau can you please show us your oldest bottle
Just wondering but how did the wood fuses work? I understand modern timed ones such as in grenades but the old civil war era ones baffle me. How were they ignited etc?
They were impregnated with a substance that burned at a steady speed. The faster you wanted them to explode, the shorter you cut your fuses. (At Gettysburg the CSA was cutting their fuses too long, exploding a long ways behind the lines they intended to beat up.) The fuse was ignited by the detonation of the charge in the cannon. There was enough "blowby" around the shell to ignite the fuse at the nose of the shell before it exited the cannon barrel.
ur amazing, and saw damn helpful. Still think ur an old stoney bro.
cool cool
gotcha
Just curious as to when was the last time someone had a shell or ball explode on them, especially after being under water all that time? I know safety is everything but was just wondering.
*****
That was one slow fuse.
***** I guess it only has to take one time for the unlucky person. Thanks for the info!
Would that unlucky person be counted as a civil war casualty?
i have heard of a few shells being detonated by EOD in the last few years due to them not nowing what kind of shells they were or if they were rendered safe, last casualty that i know of was back in the early 2000s, i think his name was sam or something.
LycomingWarrior
Yep.
have you got through all the summer videos yet?
just post em every other day we would love that!
beau, you look so silly with hair!
Were you used as a how to guy for Steven Segal Movies? Where in the world does one learn all this?
Who do you take your shells to get them drilled and flushed out. I know where some shells are but not going to touch them until I find someone that knows what they are doing.
+Beau Ouimette I'm in North Carolina..
+mopedking77 Did you ever get a response? I live in NC as well and would like to know.
+Gborohooo No I never got a response
+Beau Ouimette Oh yeah I completely understand. I was just wondering if he had a response or if it was a shop instead of an individual person that could be contacted. Btw, love your videos. Always entertaining!
but where can you find someone to do it .-.
now all i got to do is find one!!
couldn't you remove the fuse then remove the powder without drilling?
does the heat from the lamp really get that hot? i would imagine the powder would be bad anyway the sulfur would deteriorate wouldent it?
maybe ,make a tutorial with a danger fuse ,in time metal detect, sorry for my enlish}
were you ever afraid when you found one that it might detonate?
how come this was reposted ?
cool but should of done it for real
Type of wood? Oak? Pine,etc...?
be interesting to bisect a scrap piece and have a look...maybe pine...? i'll Google it....if I find something out I'll let you know...we can write a research paper on it...ha ha !
*****
I remember hearing once that they used light woods like willow and poplar. No idea if that's true though.
thanks Doug.
Just a question for you. I think I saw a vid of you finding a new build site for an alleged Homeland Security installation, where can I find that vid?
*****
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know you work for DHS... ;)
Hmmm...must have you confused with some other hairy video blogger, apologies.
Luke Skywalker? :))
I think you need to take some time and go to woodprix website to learn how to make it.
OK !!!!!!!!
Can't you just drop a match down there to see if any powder is in there first? :)
no because it wont burn sadly
Aah, so you don't drill out the shells yourself? Or do you have your own setup?
***** Nice!
Why cant we drill this ourself?
A spiral fuze like in a hand grenade may have been better.
mmmkay
my cordless craftsman drill would get the job done
***** Yeah That would be about right .... wear earmuffs , there is also a really annoying BOOM sound , but you only hear it once.
***** I think you are pretty good , and have told people I dont know HOW MANY TIMES to have a expert to do the drilling , under water, and dont do it yourself.. At least you are influencing the general public in a positive direction. It seems like there is always some yahoo that refuses to listen. Probably the same sort of people that make their own fireworks , make their own black powder, and start playing with some of that stuff on anarchists notebook "how to". There are always some Idiots .
***** That is too bad . he shouldn't have done that . Bet he wont do THAT again .
If you want to make your own woodworking yourself just look for woodprix website. There is all you need to make it :)
MmmmKay! BaBoom Baby!
I made it by myself. I used woodprix woodworking plans for that.
bellles video
Mmmmkay
what ever yous say custer!
I made it too. Want to know how ? just go to wood prix webpage.
This is sick. This is only one rule with ammunition DON'T DISASSEMBLY NEVER!!!.I'm certified sapper. And we never disassembly old ammunition this way. Only by detonation in safe conditions. Old explosive materials can be more dangerous after years... some kind of primers - tirggers can detonate when you screw it out... ofcourse you can say that is old black gunpowder... but you don't know what is inside. So never do it this way or you lost your life.
Last world some unexperienced users can't recognize modern and old ammunition. And you have 100% guaranteed disaster.
Right but remember about Murphy Law and those stupid idiots, who are not experienced like you are... and don't recognize ammunition right. I was saw in past few bodies of professionals... sorry. From my point of view, ammunition can'be disassembled and period. Top professionals buy disassembled ammunition only even if they work on it and made some new parts like triggers.... So even if you do everything right and with all rules always you have chance for accident.
***** Maybe, maybe not. That is only your point of view, but you are adult, somone are not. That is not bubble this is an anccident prevention. Ammunition is always ammunition and was made to kill.
***** Hi buddy . This guy was saying he is certified sapper. If you are talking modern mines some have anti tamper devices . You walk by it , Boom. A tiny little vibration in the ground boom ., there are at least 10 ways to set up a bouncing betty mine , you trigger it in on place, it pops up about dick level and boom , it explosively removes your scrotum. Most of the stinking newer mines these days are made with almost no metal so a metal detector is useless. This is not even saying anything about anti- tamper devices. Some mines are layed by air or artillery. When the canister blows open all those small mines in there are soaked with a liquid and are stable . All those mines hit the ground and after they dry out they get real real sensitive. If you look at them hard , boom . No wonder this guy is saying watch out
I think this is the difference between what you are talking about and what he is talking about . Plus language too I guess.
I know a lot of that old stuff can be dangerous so I dont mess with it. If I want a defused Artillery I just buy it. This whole thing about getting way back and shooting it is not a real good idea . If you can see it, it can hit you if it goes boom .Probably the cops and BATF would show up too.
Ok, but you should show it. As I told you know your skills someone don't have it at all. Think about those person and that is all. Nothing more.
enless you are one of thos professionals. dont do it at home
Seemed rushed. Not as informative as I am used to with your videos. Maybe a real start to finish would have been better
