With such an important job and so many options to choose from, we’re outlining everything you need to know.
    Let’s get started…
The Basic Parts of a Reel Seat
Body - main structure often made of graphite or aluminum
Hood - fits over reel foot for optimal stability and security
Locking Nut - tightens or loosens hood’s position over the reel foot
Barrel Threads - channel for locking nut to screw up or down
Trigger - ergonomic structure underneath casting seats for increased control

How to Size a Reel Seat
Although all reel seats share the same purpose, there are some boxes to check off to ensure you have made the best selection.
Choosing the size of your reel seat depends on the two main factors: 1) the inside diameter (I.D.) of the reel seat, and 2) the outside diameter (O.D.) of the rod blank.
TIP: Use Digital Calipers to measure these desired diameters in seconds!
Sizing for aluminum butts is determined by the O.D. of the butt of the blank, the I.D. of the aluminum butt, and the rod class.
For fly reel seats, sizing also comes down to the fly rod blank’s O.D. and the I.D. of the reel seat. Generally speaking, certain fly seats could have diameters sized more for 3-6 weights, while others could be 7-12 weights and so on.
Essentially, you can take the butt diameter of the fly rod blank, which most manufacturers list, and see if that will fit adequately within the I.D. of the fly seat. Fly fishing obviously extends from freshwater to saltwater, so it’s another application where you need to make sure you’re choosing the right reel seat for the occasion.

I hope that everyone realizes what an awesome resource these episodes are. If you are watching live you can ask questions and have a very good chance of having your question answered in the form of a demonstration. I find it hard to believe that any company, in ANY field goes as far as Mud Hole does to help their overall customer base. To their credit, I'm sure they realize that they are also catering to customers of the other companies that supply rod builders by doing these shows, but they do them anyway.
I've been rod building for less than 6 months now and I PROMISE you, I couldn't have made it this far without their help. I build no-frills rods for a customer base out of a small marina in eastern Kansas and people LOVE this product. I'm not getting rich by any means, but I now have a hobby that allows me some creativity and a chance to have a small extra income. Thanks Mud Hole and thank you Chris and Hunter!

Also, if you don't have the chance to watch these live there is STILL a huge amount of info that you can draw from on demand.
Check them out on Facebook. Particularly at "Mud Hole Live's Rod Builders' Workshop". Tons of expert advice from your peers available.

Kinda surprised you guys didn't discuss the VSS handle in reverse order. You can easily build your tape arbors, glue up the seat and then slide the reamed foregrip down onto the seat. Can use the KSKSS and a hidden hood or the standard lock nut, as you work a bait you hold onto the foregrip anyway for good balance and taking as much weight off the tip of the rod as possible. Every VSS I have mounted has been in reverse order.

      Hey Tom,
We will definitely look into building our next spinning rod this way. We love up-locking our spinning reel seats and this doesn't sound half bad. Thanks for the recommendation!
