    Cloning or copying from an old drive onto a new PC with duplicate data on a Microsoft OneDrive. I can only foresee that as causing significant duplication problems. Also, the most common files or folder that people overlook is from their local email e.g. in this case Outlook in addition to the other important data stored in the similar User locations.
    Personally, I look at a new PC as an opportunity to do some house cleaning and reorganization. If you're using Cloud storage then I'd also look at what's being stored on it and make certain anything private is indeed encrypted. There are all sorts of options. Everything from cloning, transferring (NAS or backup) and direct copying. Also, there's a complexity argument about BitLocker encryption that could probably use its own video.

    Microsoft account may not be required soon since the EU have told them to make bundled stuff uninstall able and less forced on the user. Like Cortana, Edge etc will soon be optional. We will see where that goes. I am following that story since the EU is fixing windows lol.
    Good tutorial very clear and easy to follow along.

    Should've mentioned some machines (like most Surface devices) have their drives soldered to the board.
    And the Surface devices that don't have their drives soldered, entry may be very easy (recent machines) or risks breaking the screen :)

    If you have been backing up your data correctly upgrading your PC should be a snap. Right now I am waiting on a shipment of all the components to build a system for my GF's niece. Not wanting to rehash the driver subject, but if your printer or other peripheral devices has some age make sure the maker has provided the OEM drivers needed, if not you might also want to be ready to purchase new equipment as well. As I have stated several times now, Windows does a fair job with generic drivers, but these generic drivers are not always going to work correctly. Main thing though is having a good data backup strategy and doing some careful research with regard to "other" hardware drivers and you should have years of service from that new PC!

    I totally enjoy your videos. This is right on the mark. My only comment is that IMHO Firefox is better than Chrome. And isn't Chrome the same as Edge? Something I have always done. I use flash drives as back up. So, all I had to do was use those flash drives on the new machine. Made sure each was big enough to hold whichever files I was moving. i.e. One flash drive for Documents, etc. I'm too frugal to buy that "external drive reader" you did. And flash drives are so cheap now. "Extra work, but worth it".

    This was very well explained but what about migrating the tons of programs installed on my old PC to my new PC? Since most of them are not portable and require Registry settings and who the #@$% knows other settings/files required when using the program, is there any way to perform this transfer without going through the nightmare reinstall and licensing hassle?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  6 месяцев назад

      There is a program out there for this called PickMeApp. Only one I've ever seen. Never worked well for me though, TBH. Your better bet would be to clone your drive. That would keep everything exactly as it is, no reinstalls necessary 👍

      I don't use any of the Windows library folders... not Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc. It's the first place people look if they ever gain access to your PC. Not to mention that those folders also have certain properties tied to them which I don't want or need... e.g. any MP3 files in the Music folder will automatically have artist metadata added to them that's pulled from the internet when next online.

      @@ethimself5064My guesses are:
      1) to save space, to stop people from complaining that Windows uses too much space, and...
      2) few people have a clue about restore points, and...
      3) even fewer people ever make use of restoring from a restore point.
      So Microsoft probably figures that people that understand restore points will use it, and the other 99.9999% of people that have no clue about it and will never use it do not waste space automatically saving restore points that will never be used.
