Nice! I hear your story very well. I paid mine off at age 40. I live just north of you. Don’t have any friends that understand what it means to me. It frees up your life to do what you want and don’t want to do. I just purchased mid range model 3 ( love it! ) cause I don’t have house payment.
I don’t tell anybody about my finances but they asked if I win lottery when I bought Tesla. Lol. I don’t make much money and looking for work now, but car is my only bill. I’m not looking to sell my house and make tons of money, just want to live simple life. I never made much money, just bought house at age 23 and kept making payments and extra $100 when I could. Been told to sell and upgrade and invest money many times. I just stayed in house and made payments. I’m not a risk taker. Peace of mind, security, and more choices of what I want to do makes my life happier. The feeling you expressed at beginning Video was what I felt but had nobody to share with that would understand, which is ok, it was very personal to me. Growing up with so much insecurity financially makes this special. Congrats Ben 👍🏼

This is a real testimonial to what many others could do with their lives starting today! I'm 75 years old. It took me a lot longer than it took you to have my "ah-ha moment". I was in my mid 40s when I learned that the secret to financial and life security was a business where I got paid for the value of what I could do for others rather than the amount of time they wanted to pay for. I haven't mastered the technical aspects yet to scale the value I bring to my client relationships yet. You motivated to get moving doing this. I'm going to put together a 5 year timeline to make this happen. Thanks, Ben.

I have a similar story, but I won't bore everyone with it. What Ben says does work.
If you want to be independent, always be looking for passive income. Although it seems obvious, I've explained the details to many people, but it takes the right kind of person to actually pursue it. Most say it's a good idea but don't follow through. If you want to be successful, follow your passive income ideas. A warning that was part of Ben's story but not explicitly stated: when you look for passive income, Think Big. Real Estate is great if you do it right, and you don't need money, contrary to what people generally think. If you have a genuinely good idea, investors will give you the money. If real estate is your thing, then hang where real estate investors do: real estate clubs which exist in virtually every town.
If real estate isn't your thing, then heed Ben's advice: learn a skill that people will pay a lot of money for. Learn it well, then capitalize on it.
The bottom line is if you sell your time, the most you can make is whatever your can earn at your salary in 8-16 hours. Passive income pays while you sleep.

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 5 лет назад

IDK. "Passive Income" is a phrase now used by a lot of scammers. And look at this from the dark side: people can no longer thrive, or even keep afloat on wage or even salary employment, when people used to be able to do this. It's tragic.

    • @HarshColby
      @HarshColby 5 лет назад

@@squirlmy Like all good ideas, scammers take advantage of people that don't do their homework.
Because you can't keep afloat on wages and salary is the reason why you need to find good investments yielding passive income.

I'm 24 going on 25, Workin as an assembly technician, hating everyday of it. Just signed up for my first year of college, attempting to go for an electrical engineering degree. Working full-time at a relatively labor-intensive facility. The thing is a I feel like I have a talent as an idea man, (I know it sounds stupid) but I've worked with a very small start-up in the past. I was able to understand the problems between engineers, convey that message to the designers while vice-versa conveying the message of the designers to the engineers. That was my start. I later started working in there RD lab, researching and reallying applying old and new technologies to create a product that was wanted from our clients. Long story short I Co-patented a few products but was young and dumb and didn't get much in writing. The company was sold and I was out of work. Explaining my current working situations. I'm decent with my hands, but I'm better with my brain.
How do I convey that to employers, with nothing but words to back that up, no degrees, of anything to speak of? Should I really be pursuing a career in engineering? Or is that a waste of my time, especially considering the fact that I'm still working full-time. I guess I'm just looking for a little guidance, into somewhat fitting into this world, and then breaking free of it, and making my own rules.
With all that being said, congratulations on your success and achievements! It truly is impressive, and what's more, you trying to rise others up with you as you're going up. Something that I think most forget about, or just don't make time for.

Hey Ben, this is great and something I’d hadn’t thought of either, I shall try and pass this on to the younger ones. There is a load on f life skills and knowledge that needs to be passed on. The old adage “I wish known that when I was younger” and that you need to plan your life and goals. It’s not for everyone, some people are not motivated by money or the security it offers. But, for most people they need guidance and mentoring on how to make the best of what they can, accept failure for what it is - a learning opportunity (much easier said than done) and look forward and not back. Things is it’s sounds easy, but maintaining the discipline and not taking the easy route or giving in too impulse is very hard.

Great video! What you had to say about "passive income" sorta makes me think about what I has said about renting out my car on Turo when I met you up in north county the other night (not sure what is really OK to put about that here in a public comment as far as spoiling future videos, so I hope you know what I'm talking about).
At first I really wasn't sure about it, but even after just 6 weeks, it's becoming a really promising way to make a few bucks on the side, while enabling me to own a car that I would normally have never considered. It's going so well in fact that I'm already considering the possibility of adding another car...

I don't know. I really appreciate the advice, and I appreciate your genuineness and authenticity in wishing us well, but I feel like this video (/channel?) assumes that money is that important to you/everyone. This talks about a goal that people may not really have, so while this channel is relevant to many/most/all of us, this video may not be. I'm not trying to flame, just trying to bring out contrast.
I dunno, it would be great to have a house that's paid off, but it seems that there might be other things that are more important to people, e.g. helping them to identify what makes them (truly) happy. Is it about identifying a job/sector/business which they might want to ply themselves, is it about identifying what matters most to someone (e.g. someone's values), and trying to identify what are the best ways of living those values out? Is it about helping people find their inner balance -- particularly in a (Western) world in which mental health issues are truly growing (e.g. the UK has developed its first "loneliness strategy" and appointed a Minister of Loneliness, to try to combat that issue -- but the issues of loneliness and mental health are prevalent in many Western countries, and e.g. Japan)?
Anyway, again, not to flame at all -- I like your channel --, it was just more to point out that the video assumes a few things... If you have any insights on becoming happier (and I'm sure you do), I, for one, would be happy to watch/listen to them.
    Thanks again for the vids.

It can still apply more broadly, a person is satisfied they achieved a goal they've been working a long time for. Moreover, achieving the goal has opened up more opportunities. Not to mention the journey that has been life changing.
But yeah, paying off a house doesn't resonate with me either, it's quite an artificial mountain to climb. There are plenty of ways around a long, painful process of paying off a pricy house.

Great Video. Tony Robbins is a great way to be able to help change things blocking your ability to make that change in attitude. The old R2Me2 can be reprogrammed.
Having the house paid off is a great feeling. The equity position in a startup is a very risky thing but if you still get paid it is worth it. My favorite startup here back around 2000 was a company call Agillian. They bought a big building and during the auction of everything we spent hours trying to figure out what they did really. That was the dot com busts that were around here. Property investment is good but you should have a fix it yourself background or it will eat your lunch. I used to be busy mowing my lawns, fixing sinks, toilets, repairing roofs. Love the trailer park now. Just keep it clean, up to date, and great manager to keep things clean. You did a great job working for companies. I had a really difficult time doing that and now embrace being an entrepreneur. Classic case was Dad died at 16 and had to fend for self pretty much. Kudos for your video. I hope it inspires people to do things other than work for the Man.

a rough childhood is when you become too shy to make eye contact let alone kiss or speak to the people around you about your life (friends NA, acquaintances applicable), get raped, are a physiologically impotent male, and your morale is destroyed. Being an unwanted ugly duckling.
morale is key. if you're bred to feel dead inside and struggle to find life worth living then I think that's a lot more rough.

Wow, considering California Taxes - that IS quite an accomplishment. Since you're into data, have you looked at your amortizations and payment breakdowns over the years to see what percentage overall was Property Taxes and Insurance, and what was actually Principle? It would be interesting to know how much each was proportionally overall, if you're willing to share just the percentages. It also may be good information for those thinking about buying a home. Again, quite an accomplishment, and San Diego must be a good place... Congrats.

Great man! Good advice also. I’m a architectural photographer. In the past you’d live of licensing your work. That’s not barely the case anymore. I’m still young so I should look more into passive income. I also combine my photo work with cinematography work and learning more on marketing. After seeing this I think I’m going to research more on the things you told. I sell hours for money but there should be another way to keep it coming. Thanks for the inspiration.

Anybody watching this video should not feel bad about the situation they're in as compared to your success. I'm only 32 but my hard work ethic and my determination to put me on the same track. It takes determination and the willingness to think outside the box to make it in this world. Most of us watching this video are Americans or we live in a free Nation that allows us to be able to stream things via internet. I hold no hard feelings against your success, quite the opposite. Let me say congratulations and I will continue to follow teslanomics, not due to the success that you've had; rather the knowledge that you brought to the table that allowed that success to blossom and make your dreams come true. Congratulations my friend I wish you many happy years. Now it's time to invest.

Very good advice. There have been times where I'd started working on some project on my own only to have other doors open for me. I'd also recommend a couple books to help others along the way. Not really a self-help but will get you thinking. I agree it will take work.
'Mastery" - Robert Greene goes into depth about finding your passion and skills that can be used to make your path.
'How to Fail at Almost Everything' - Scott Adams also goes into skills and being able to bounce back. Making a process and system that builds on a foundation. With a little luck and passion, you'll need to tap into what works for you to make it into value for others consistently.

Congrats. But why did you pay of your mortgage at that low interest rates. I'm in an similar situation, but my mortgage is fix for 20 years at 2% p.a.. I could easily repay my mortgage but invest my money in other assets that bring me more return and passive income.

I am doing the same as I get nearly 10% on my investments but only pay 2.5% on my mortgage, but obviously there are risks with investing and paying off your mortgage can be a great safety blanket even if its not optimal.

I toiled with this for a long time and honestly think it comes down to personal preference. I don't have a ton of faith in the future of our economy so decided to pull the plug now and enjoy the added monthly cash flow. I see valid arguments on both sides but at the end of the day I don't think either option is bad.

There's another way to do it: pay yourself first. Put the max into a 401(k), no cheating. Something else to keep in mind, depending on your mortgage rate, it's cheap money. Paying off your mortgage is important but property taxes are forever. Don't live in the worst part of town but don't live in the most expensive either. Property taxes can easily dwarf mortgage so paying off the mortgage is good but you'll still owe hundreds or thousands per month.

Ben, you always make awesome videos. I think you should rethink rental real estate. If you factor in paying a good manager into your numbers, it shouldn’t be a hassle at all. Plus, you can get a mortgage with a small down payment, and so, you are only investing a small amount, but seeing a return for the full value of the house. It’s like having an employer who will instead of matching for your retirement, will give you $95 for every $5 you invest (in the case of a 5% down payment).
I’ve watched your channel, and Answers with Joe for quite a while. It was cool to see you guys team up. Keep up the good work here and the other show.

Ben - congratulations on making some good choices and doing well with those choices. It's great that you have shared your strategy for how you were able to accomplish so much.
Now, not to detract from your great accomplishments, but as a "data" guy, why would you pay off your mortgage, rather than using that capital in some better way? Did you apply data science to that decision? I have a 30 year fixed loan (on an expensive house in California), and always aggressively refinanced it when interest rates went down. It's now at less than 3.5% (30-yr fixed). Even now, one can get a Fixed rate, Jumbo loan for close to 4%. And that is a tax deductible expense. On the other hand, the long term average payout on the stock market (say, an S&P 500 ETF) is about a 10% return (when you include dividends). Of course, there are ups and downs with the stock market (volatility), and perhaps the future returns will be less. But even if you thought the future returns would only be 7-8%, why not borrow at 4% and earn at 7-8%?
