Curtis Matsko (founder of PLG, for those who may not know his name) actually started with refillable leather journals, then he started making bags. He was on the Full Grain Podcast talking about the growth of PLG. I thought it was a very interesting listen.
I slip both notebook covers in the pockets. I also use the passport covers as journal covers. I also prefer Rareform pencil pouches. They are slimmer but they have elastic to slip it onto the journal cover. If I hadn't got a beautiful Hokusai cover for my Hobonichi Avec, the mid size may have worked for it. I have one in the honey for my moving info journal and while it does indeed scratch up, thats what I like abut it.
I agree about the Alpine; I picked up a Peacock variant of the Alpine pouch and struggled to figure out what to use it for. Ultimately I've been using it for crochet tools, which works well. I don't think I even knew there was a small-sized Sidekick! And the seaming on the bottom of the Canoe makes it a no-go for me too. Thanks for the comprehensive review!
I use a jibun techo planner and the large snap works perfectly for a cover for it. So I have collected four of them so far. Also, the small snap journal works as a cover for the small moleskin art sketchbook. I only like to put the back cover of the sketchbook into the cover or else it won’t lie flat, but it is very good at protecting the sketchbook in bags.
Hello Autumn, I am into Japanese stationary and I get my agenda from Hobonichi and I’ve gone back to using fountain pens to write. I also started a small gel pen collection from Pentel Clena.
Great review on these items! I agree with you on the journal. It is challenging to fit a thick journal or double up. You can use a thicker journal in the wrapped journal, though, but the strap is a little cumbersome. 🙈 It is so nice that you are moving to Portland; now you can get all the unicorns in the store!
I have a large notebook I received in a mystery box and a medium that I bought. The medium is my favorite so far. The small sidekick would be my choice as I don’t really carry a lot of pens etc in my bags. I have a Swarovski pen that has its own velvet cover and that is really all I carry in my purse. I’m most excited to hear we have more PLG videos coming💕
The MM is based on a standard "personal" sized planner. It goes Pocket,Personal,A5. New sizes in between have been added over time, Personal Wide,B6 Slim,B6 etc. But the standardized Personal sized papers are all like that. If ever you want to get into higher quality planner covers, look at Van Der Spek and Gillio😉Thanks for the video!
That was very helpful, thanks. I have a medium snap journal and I put both covers in the pockets, so it’s not floppy. I think I did the front cover first.
You know Autumn. I love your videos, the content is always so good and useful. That being said I also find out so many other good things!! I LOVE stationery, pens and markers. I loved that you shared the link for the highlighters and the markers!!! 💕💕
You are so good at these thorough videos. I think I would like the medium notebook because it is so thin. I also love that the refills are reasonably priced. I'm going to check their website to see if they have agendas. If not someone probably makes one to fit. I love that you don't need the largest pencil cases because ... ahem ... it's not like you are a teacher or anything! xoxo
Great Video Autumn thank you for sharing! I think the small journal and the small pencil case would work best for me ❤ my bags are usually on the smaller side 😊
Hi Autumn. You have a nice collection. I love the idea of a journal. I purchased the Clemence from Louis Vuitton…but truth be told…I haven’t used it. I love it. I love looking at it. But, I am not really someone who uses a journal. And actually, the Clemence might be labeled as a note book thingy. Ha.
I also wanted to mention that I have a couple of pencil pouches and ink pens from Lilly Pulitzer that I adore…even though they aren’t leather. They are so pretty to me and I love pulling them out of my bags when I need to use a pen. Plus, I know my bags are protected.
Hi Autumn, I'm a bit confused with the notebook covers and the way you use them. One of the sides (the right side when open) it's open (not stitched completely) so you can pull the journal back cover after you put the front on the left side pocket 😁 at least that's how we use them on this side of the pond, or maybe we're doing it wrong 🙈
I'm not much into journals, but I'd like the small snap journal. It's the perfect size to store in just about any handbag and to use for shorthand note taking. My favorite pencil pouch is the ballpark because I think the size is perfect. I use mine all the time for storing small items I carry in my purse: a pen, dental floss, mints, pill case, etc. I find the alpine to be interesting, but it's also the most awkward. I received one in a mystery box and I'm trying to get rid of it. If I'm unable to, then I'll use it for easy access key storage when carrying a larger tote.
Lovely comparison video. I am living for the pencil cases, but I have no real use for them because I already have way too many pouches! Knowing me, I will end up buying a couple regardless, but I am feeling strong at the moment! Thank you for the video! I hope the move planning/implementation is going well. I don't remember if I told you, but there is a RUclips channel called ACRE HOMESTEAD. She lives in Oregan and she knows a lot of the local farmer markets and so forth. A really fun channel and worth trying out!
Great timing! I'm a collector of stationery and pouches as well as a bag lover. That said, as I'm getting older, I'm struggling with heavy things such as many leather bags and even pouches because they weigh so much when filled. Still, I need to be able to carry a lot including a standard size reporter's notebook, reading glasses, lipstick, mirror, etc. I'm reluctant to try PLG because I'm intimidated by the weight of leather vs. coated canvas. What's that like for you?
Aren’t you supposed to put the front notebook cover inside the flap and then it won’t flop? Just curious. I’m researching right now because I just found this brand and already have my cart full lol
In regards to the floppiness of the notebook covers, wouldn’t they be more sturdy with the front of the notebook insert’s front inserted into the front of the leather case? Hope this makes sense.😂
I love your journals. I haven’t gotten one in any of my mystery boxes. I use an alpine as my main pouch that I move from purse to purse, it holds my inhaler and other essentials. And the alpine is easy to shove into any empty space in a bag.
“The Alpine is just weird”….… Thanks for validating my opinion ❤❤

Autumn great comparison video. It’s confusing and I give up lol 😆 thanks this is a video I look and look at again and again. Thanks for sharing 🚢👛🛍️🙏

Excellent review as always - this was really helpful. I never understood the Alpine's appeal either.

Have you tried a traveler's journal?
Just tried to purchase two items on your link but it would not work with PayPal?
HEY AUTUM , UDE MAKE A GOOD TV REPORTER.. EXPRESSIVE VOICE, WELL SPOKEN, COULD BE A NEW CAREER FOR YOU IN OREGON
Do you think they would fit a thin bible
❤❤❤
Seems like both covers of the notebooks should go in the pockets on either side. Hmmm
I'm wondering if the moleskines would fit those journals.
