Either/Or, is in my opinion, probably the greatest album of all time. I'm grateful to Justin for giving such good lessons on music which is, relatively, less well known.
8 years later this is still the best Say Yes lesson on RUclips. Well done and thank you! Very helpful, I learned a new song today. I appreciate what you are doing.
I just wanted to make a suggestion for anyone learning this, when you play the C/G chord (C with the G bass) in the bridge parts it's sounds nice if you walk the bass C,B,A,G which is what Elliott is playing in the higher range on the lead guitar part anyway.I wanted to thank you Justin for turning my attention to this and opening my ears. I worked out the melody line to go on top of the chords in the break between the verses, got it sounding just like the record now J.U.S.T.I.N.
Thanks for this. I’ll be performing this song (singing and playing) on Sept 7 in Long Beach, California as part of a collective collaboration of local musicians who are performing the entire album. This video really helped me out! I appreciate your approach that seems both accessible to beginners and offers theory context to more formally trained musicians. I look forward to checking out your other videos now!
This is an amazing song. I'm sure most of us love playing fast and all that shit but sometimes it's a simple song with amazing words, like this one, that really reminds you that you need very little to play or even write something very special. Free your head, let yourself write whatever you feel and just do it. Anyone can.
I got a brain injury about 4/5 years back, and it’s - in a word- stubborn, to get in my head/system. Having a great video like this really helps explain this song to me. I love Elliott Smith(R.I.P) and I love this song, thanks Justin!
That was amazing, Justin. Elliott is pretty difficult to figure out. If you could also teach "Pitseleh", also by Elliott Smith, I'll be your biggest fan :) Thanks for posting this.
Have learnt more in the last couple of years listening to your guitar lessons than the years and years of books and self tutoring. Enjoyed this song Say Yes. Wish you had some tips on remembering lyrics,
I got impatient waiting for more neil young so I transcribed out on the weekend myself! It really is where it's at! With the amount of videos on youtube it's a crime not to try transcribing it first, thank you Justin for weaning me off tab sites they are inevitably always wrong anyway. You the man, I'm going to get the rock songbook when it comes out got a new electric to break in. Thank you for your flawless pedagogical methods there really is a knack to teaching and you got it my friend.
Justin, thank you so much for this video. I love your Elliott Smith tutorials and would highly appreciate a Miss Misery video if you are able to. You are an amazing teacher, thank you again for all you do.
Thank you so much for putting up Elliott's tutorials. I've been searching for "Independence day" and "Better be quite now" tabs or video lessons, but unfortunately couldnt find any legit ones. These are Elliott's less famous songs but guitar parts are absolutely brilliant. lots of beautiful chords and harmonies. Although my favorite one is "Angeles" of course =)
It's not really a funky tuning, this is just 2 steps down from standard tuning lol. If you want to tune it easily put a capo on the 2nd fret and then re-tune the strings until they're at the standard tuning, then take the capo off and you'll be tuned 2 steps down.
Like these other guys have said, Standard D is not that bad! You can throw a capo on the second fret to play all your other songs when you're not practicing this one, so you don't have to keep tuning your guitar up and down, up and down, all the time.
I love the gloomy texture of Elliott's voice, goes perfectly with his trademark D Standard tuning and the stuff he likes to sing about. I'm starting out with the guitar and I just did a cover of this song. It would be awesome if you can check it out and let me know how you like it :)
Hey Justin, it would be brilliant if you could do "Never going back again" By Fleetwood Mac. Not only is it a brilliant song but it would teach so many people to improve their finger picking skills, and i believe they are actually doing a tour soon so it would be appropriate too. Thanks!
Hello Justin!! Thanks so much for this tutorial, it's wonderful. Would you please be able to do a tutorial for "Can't Make a Sound" by Elliott Smith as well?
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the suggestion. I forget sometimes how good you are at playng guitar Justin I'm so hooked on your teaching. Lovely singing too. At last D drop down tuning how to do it. I thing if you do lesson on that Justin, with specific title will get loads of views. Title something like: How to do drop down tuning on guitar. Only an idea. Many will miss this important info you are sharing otherwise
That is so unbelievably good. Your covers are incredible! Always musically spot on. But you always capture the artists groove...impeccably. I've learned heaps from your channel. You are such an exceptional educator, human being, dude etc. Thanks man. 😎✌️
I have always loved this tune and for those who don't know Elliott Smith's songs awash the film 'Good Will Hunting' which is where I first heard this tune. Absolutely awesome lesson Justin, thanks! :-)
Hey man, I'd say the thing that did the best for me as a beginner was to learn Stairway to Heaven. For an EASY lesson (easier to follow even than Justin's) learn the intro from MetalMayhem. Then come to this channel and learn the rest. Also, use the unitedwetab cover of Stairway to put it together. Work at it, learn it, play it. Then learn technique videos from here, hone your technique, and learn more from Justin! Also, there's a really great Dust in the Wind tutorial from guitarsing365songs.
It's a lovely song. Do you have Miss Misery? Haha, I didn't tune down...I just play it in E and start up the neck. Sounds good enough. Do you know if he multi-tracked his voice or used an octave splitter?
there are some angeles nice ones and ultimate guitar tab , but nothing exactly the same , so we could use some justin. Been working one year on angeles..
At the end of the bridge instead of the e minor just take your finger off the second fret 4th string it sounds more right to me. So im suggesting the chord to be " 0-2-0-0-0-0 "
you have to tune your guitar a half step down. He's saying it would be easier to do so if you put the capo on the first fret, then tune the strings to standard, then remove the capo and boom.... your guitar is tuned half a step down :)
IMPORTANT: grammys will now award a trophy to best music educator and who could anyone think of other than Justin Sandercoe. I tried to nominate him but since I live in India, I can't nominate, i guess only americans can nominate. So i request all of you to nominate him and pass on the news. He deserves it.
I do not mean to complain by any means. On the contrary, i find your work brilliant. Although as a beginner guitarrist it's very hard to grasp an entire new song everytime i try to learn one. What I'm getting at is that it would be a lot appreciated if you started teaching some more famous songs. PS. You are by far my favourite guitar teacher on RUclips, so other channels is not an optimal solution Keep up the great work!
@ Kallee Alsterburg You may be wise to get Justin's beginner song book as all the videos are on RUclips , So you have book and video to learn from . Check his website there is plenty of good well known songs to learn . Good luck and Nice one Justin
Fuckin' eh man. Great cover. Not sure why anyone would dislike your vid. You played it very well, went over the song in nice detail, and overall just did an awesome job. Thanks for this video. I'm going to learn this song when I get off work today. Cheers!
If you're a beginner, you shouldn't really be learning a lot of different songs. Learn a couple of songs that sound nice, but you should look at why they sound nice, and also work on chords and stuff like that. Wow I didn't even realise this was that old. Astoundingly good quality for a video almost a decade old
@@DaddyGandhi I agree, very well produced video.

Dude you sing really well, like I know how hard those high note in that song are but that was a nice cover and also awesome lesson.
I'm trying to learn guitar with this song as my goal. Thank you.
This is one of my all time favorites, thanks Justin.
Awesome so glad you covered this, I have been trying to work this out for years
It would be awesome if you could do one for Angle in The Snow. Such a beautiful but difficult song to play
Perfect tutorial. Thank you a lot
Why do all the best songs have some funky tuning. It's all too much maths for my ape brain.
It's not really a funky tuning, this is just 2 steps down from standard tuning lol. If you want to tune it easily put a capo on the 2nd fret and then re-tune the strings until they're at the standard tuning, then take the capo off and you'll be tuned 2 steps down.
