Dressage Fail: Grand Prix Dressage Freestyle Gone Wrong

- This Grand Prix dressage horse already had a feeling that 2020 was going to be a disaster and was calling for a hard no as Julio Cesar Mendoza Loor entered the Friday night freestyle at the Global Dressage Festival last season. Rosali was feeling a bit electric under the excitement of the lights and the crowd which led to a dressage disaster and an epic grand prix dressage freestyle fail.
As a true horseman, we do see Julio retire Rosali without completing the Grand Prix dressage freestyle, at which point he was required to hand walk the hot horse out of the dressage arena.
Most of the dressage disasters we have featured here on Dressage Hub have a lot to do with aggressive riding and a horse saying no. In a sudden flip of the switch we see a compassionate rider trying to calm a hot horse and leave the arena on a positive note, rather than continuing with the grand prix dressage freestyle to the detriment of the horse.
We are looking forward to seeing this combination back in the dressage ring for the 2021 season at the Global Dressage Festival. Especially after checking out the hind leg action of this horse when it was at its worst!
NOTE: Due to copyright issues some of the music for the Grand Prix Dressage Freestyle has been replaced.

The title of this is misleading, should be "GP Dressage Fail Gone Right" because this is the exact way it should have been handled. I think we could have seen SO much worse if the rider hadn't stopped when he did, that horse was close to having a meltdown. Glad the rider was experienced and sensible enough to know to stop before it reached that point.
Yeah when your horse is offering piaffe when all you want is a halt you know he’s bursting out of his skin and needs a serious chill pill
That horse looked like it went lame.
I mean ok the horse was a bit nervous but I’ve seen meltdowns and this wasn’t it :) still the right choice for the horse to cancel so good horsemanship right there. I love how he treats his horse
@@MSchipper no.
@@MSchipper clearly it did not. You obviously do not know a lot about horses, so why make an inflammatory comment?
I wouldn't call that a fail!!
Wasn't this horses' day. The rider did all the right things. I've never seen a rider dismount at this level. He clearly was trying to soothe this horse. Never showed anger or frustration. Gold star, as far as I'm concerned.
To me, after the rider dismounted, and a couple times in the ring when the rider attempted to pat his neck, the horse reacted as if he was expecting to get smacked.
@@lc285 no he didn’t he was just extremely wound up. The rider didn’t Pat his neck he ran his hand down the neck to try and soothe him. The jumpiness you might be referring to was in fact one horse ready to take flight and one rider trying to hold him to keep him safe. Dismounting was to also keep himself safe, but even with the rider on the ground the horse was on the verge of flight and it was essential the rider try to calm him and keep him in a walk. When a horse is spooked everything becomes scary to them and the last thing you want is a horse running “wild” in an arena with its reins hanging free etc it could end badly for the horse. I think the young man did a really good job of holding his own nerves and showing patience and understanding to his horse. I hope they were both ok afterwards and the horse didn’t have any lasting scars from his ordeal x
Wonderful display of horsemenship. Loved how he even got off at the end and walked him out, not caring about anything other than reassuring the horse. Never once lost his patience. Wish we had more horsemen left like that.
That’s what a true horseman does , this makes me happy . Horse safety comes first
If you are reading this please remember that this is normal ,this happens to every horse and rider out there.
Most important thing is to NEVER give up 💕
Yes! Thank you
So true. I have left the arena mid test because it was just the right thing to do for my horse at the time and im sure it wont be last. I think this rider done a great job with everything that was happening.
It is a humbling sport, indeed!
That’s what my trainer told me last session thank you 💓
Shouldn't have been labeled as a disaster! I'm sure it felt like a train wreck, but horses are emotional animals. His rider handled it very well.
The test was a disaster, nothing was going right, but he stopped because he felt his horse wasn't right.
I like how the rider knew to stop while he was a head to avoid a disaster, was gently petting him, then jump off and worked him in hand to help the horse stay focused on him. Excellent horseman!
I see a very “hot” and sensitive horse. Julio handled this with sensitivity and compassion. I don’t see a fail at all. Kudos to Julio!
Yeah, but I also see a horse, which salivates really hard and that means, that the mouthcloser is too thight. The horse can't swallow it's own saliva and also can't breath. Horrible to see.
But I agree. The rider acted really calm and nice.
@@Brunnenholz Horses salivate when flexion in the throttle area causes pressure which activates the slaivary glands. Or else because of a reaction to the chemicals in the bit.
@AMALYA SILVERBLATT of course. I know, that salivation is a result of an active mouth. But when the saliva comes out of the mouth, the mouthcloser is too thight, so the horse can't swallow it. And that's a fact. Normally, the horse swallow its saliva, but when mouthcloser is too thight, there is no option, the saliva comes out of the mouth. When this happens it's a sign that the horse also couldn't breath, because the mouthcloser is also wrapped around the sensitive, soft area of the nose airways. There ARE problems. You just have a little bit to know about anatomy.
@AMALYA SILVERBLATT what creature can't swallow it's own saliva..
@@Brunnenholz You have no idea what you are talking about. It is a nervous, hot and heavy horse. Drooling is quite normal when a horse is having almost a meltdown, which is clearly what is happening...
Julio Mendoza shows his excellent horsemanship, empathy, and professionalism in this video. It's clear that he cares a great deal about the welfare of his horses.
It sucks when these rides happen, but the rider handled it like a champ. Kinda makes me smirk: we know the audience is just trying to show their support by clapping, but they really aren't making things easier. Their hearts are in the right place, though. On the bright side, this is really helpful for amateurs to see that even experienced riders struggle. I've been watching the legs in the UK and riders will have their Oopsie days on it too--dropping their reins, messing their , falling out of piaffe into , etc, losing their spot to their music in the freestyle. It happens to everybody and while we feel bad for the riders, it is nice to know it's not just us who are struggling.
Horses have bad days too. Good that he bowed out. Just hope that behind the scenes he was as caring for the horse as he was in front of the crowd.
I would guess he is. If the horse were accustomed to rough, unfair treatment by him, it likely would have escalated its behavior when he was reaching up and stroking the head and neck, rather than being soothed.
I agree. Horses do not lie. This one was transmitting "I don't feel right" and the message was heard. Love the gentleness when dismounting...if the horse anticipated trouble I don't think the rider could have calmed...
Me too! I’ve seen some riders bow out with grace and understanding in front of the judges and spectators, and then thrash their horse round the warm up ring for hours until it’s practically on its knees when no ones watching.
I actually have worked for him and he's always kind to the horses, good days or bad days. He was incredibly patient
@@FancyLord looks like this horse was in training not a competition... but you are right they have their good and bad days...
Have followed Julio for YEARS in the Friesian world. Have always been impressed with his Horsemanship. A class act Rider!
I'm so glad, you say that he acts not only that day in this beautiful and empathic way. I agree: a great horseman! 👍👍👍
Sry for my english
Finally, a real rider, who did the right thing by his horse. Long time since I have seen this. This rider has my respect.
This rider deserves all the praise. Soothing the horse instead of put more pressure and getting frustrated. He even walked the horse out of the arena. I mean WOW. 🙌💪👏
I'm not a horse trainer, but I do train dogs. So many people don't want to be "embarrassed" when their dog isn't performing well, so instead of de-escalating and taking a few steps back, they insist on pushing forward. Then they get bitten or something else bad happens. I don't know much about dressage, but I could see there was something going wrong in this horse's head. Good for this guy for doing the right thing and caring more about the horse than the performance.
This is a perfect example of a rider paying attention to his horse. He noticed his horse was becoming agitated and asked for music to stop and started rubbing his horses neck and telling him he's OK and to stop the routine. He did this with compassion and love not punishment 😃. Never ever punish the animal for being agitated.
Steam pouring off the poor creature.😢 What support and empathy this rider showed! Bravo to a true hero! ❤❤❤
Amazing horsemanship right there. Tried to ride it out we all do that but when it wasn’t helping he stopped and once he was out he got off and hand walked him back good job to the rider we all get good days and bad horse and rider so great job for the rider for putting his partner first
The rider did the right thing to avoid his very nervous horse really falling apart. Hope he was that kind behind the scenes as well. It is very stressful to show at night with the audience so close to the arena as well. But no this wasn’t a disaster at all , but a learning experience for both! Thank
I have had lessons and have done clinics with Julio. He truly has the horse’s best interest in mind! Professional and caring!
The rider did the best thing for the horse. He chose understanding over ego. He lead by example. Well done! Respect!
Love the way the rider handled it,such care for his horse
Julio Mendoza is a great trainer, rider, and person. Horses experience this kind of tension in the ring all the time. God bless Julio for his expertise and compassion. It is an intimidating experience with the lights, the crowd, and the loud music. He showed the ultimate professionalism.
My daughter & I have the honor of knowing this amazing rider…he is one of the best…truly gifted. 🏅
One of my first trainers said, "some days either horse or rider or both have forgotten which end of a horse goes forward. Best you can do is first try to work through it, but recognize when it's time to pat the horse and try again another day."
That is a true horseman. Well done. The fact he walked the horse out of the arena, talking to it and keeping it under control? That's a dressage success.
Poor horse was very tense. I'm glad he decided not to push things further.
Horse: about to lose his sh*t. Announcer: “Everybody give him a BIG HAND!” really give him something to spook at 🤦🏻♀️
Rider was very kind, and obviously cared deeply for his horse.. it looked to me like the horse was off in his hind. Once he dismounted you can really see it.
Absolutely lame on his hind left. Can see he flank convulsing as he walks and the stiffness down his leg. Poor soul
Amazing rider, he showed us how to handle those difficult days calmly. It helps all riders to see our top athletes having the same experiences we have.
Better horsemanship and patience than we see from most top level riders.
The rider handled this so well. Lots of respect for him! He was kind to her, knowing she was scared.
Even these guys have these rides. Very therapeutic to watch. Rider was all class, and those hind legs!!! Let's see that on a great day! Thx DH!
That was my thought! Holy hind leg!!!
👍 He knows that his horse can't do it this day. So he gave up.
I hope behind this he will treat him so well like there where people watch. 😊
The music is enough to unravel anybody
Something had really spooked this beautiful horse. It’s NOT a fail! Horses are sentient beings and like us can have off days. He clearly wasn’t right from the moment he came into the ring as he was already sweating up. It would have been a fail had the rider just pushed him on and on but, as we saw, the horse was more important than the competition. His rider was a really sympathetic man who tried so hard from the saddle to calm and reassure his partner and when that didn’t work he dismounted and he took his time trying to keep the horse calm and safe. The rider should be applauded for his calm and sympathetic handling in a crisis - a demonstration of true horsemanship xx
PRAISE GOD, THE RIDER KNEW ENOUGH TO STOP.
Excelente rider following the safety procedures. I’m surprise no body noticed the horse was lame in the back right. Agreed this shouldn’t be named as a disaster it is a very well handle situation that happens all the time at any level of dressage. Congratulations to the rider.
What a kind man. Sometimes night riding doesn't go well. I had well trained driving horse. Showed her in a night class. She was terrified of the lights and shadows. I also excused my self. That was the one and only time. I would suspect from horses body language he was terrified. If have had them in an arena at night under light you just don't know. The rider was wonderful.
I've always known him to be an amazing horseman. Always very impressed when I see him work. Horses are the priority at his barn, so this is not surprising in the least. Maybe not the result they were both hoping for (that's definitely a talented horse) but he turned it into a teachable moment--for the audience and the horse!
He should win in this event
Alone!! This is true horsemanship at its best...putting your horse first ❤️❤️
You can see he wanted to explode the whole time
What a wonderful horseman. Well done.
Thank you for putting your horse first ..Bravo ..
That horse was jacked! Yes, riders can have bad days but horses can too...was nice to see the rider handle this so quietly.
Bravo to the Rider!!!!!!!! thats true horsemanship!!!
Much respect to the rider for putting the horse first.
Did anyone catch the horse foaming and drooling? Awww. Such gentle compassion! Great job!
looking past all the mistakes, this looks like such a nice tempered horse. even with all that spice and axiety, he is still listening and behaving himself
That's perfect horsemanship! Well done!
This was painful to watch. I'm glad the rider did excuse himself. I hope they either find a way for the horse to mature and enjoy showing, or accept the horse's limitations and excuse him from competition at such a high level of pressure.
You can’t judge a horse after one performance
Maybe just had a bad day.
Now that is a true horseman 👏🏼
Smart rider. Realized horse was having a bad day. Msybe the lights freaked horse. Class act
Horse first. Wonderful and correct.
What a glorious day for dressage riding said NO HORSE EVER !!!
Great rider , knew the horse was not happy. He tried but not today. BRAVO RIDER.
Good for him for stopping when he did. That horse definitely has something bothering him which is most likely adding to him being so up or even frustrated. It looks to me like he was short stepping often on the right hind which leads me to consider a stifle problem. But, as many horse owners know, it can also come from another area in the body that looks like another issue. Hopefully the horse is treatable and go on with his career.
This horse looked off to me in the hind, also.
Intelligent decision. No failure here.
the rider handled the whole situation very very well
You handled this wonderfully!!!
Beautiful horse tho, just hot as the sun that day.. ☀️🔥🤣
The rider handled it correctly, no need to push through, when the horse is about to blow up at any moment.
I guess they will work a bit more on finding relaxation, especially in stressful situations..
Wish them the best of luck, and looking forward to see them again..
Wow, it's so great that he stopped for the horse's well-being 😍
what a wonderful horseman
This is the proper thing for the rider to do with a clearly rattled & unnerved horse. The gentle strokes on the neck were great. Great 'horseman'.... NOT just a 'rider' using the horse as a trophy robot.
As he is heading towards Exit, right before dismount - pay close attention to back, left leg from knee down to hock. Tendon? Possibly in hoof?? Something is hurting this horse. So glad he dismounted when he did.
The rider did an excellent jot of keeping calm...not a fail at all !
Good on him. He made a great decision. Sometimes it just doesn't work, but he did the best with this situation. He did the right thing by the horse and this is very humbling to watch.
Class act ❤️
Hardly a disaster. A lovely example of exactly what dressage is about... communication between the horse and rider. The rider listened to his horse perfectly.
There seems to be a constant break. Rider -vs-Horse. "TO HOT TO HANDLE" GOOD LORD POOR HORSE LOOKS LIKE IT'S ON METH.
Julio is an amazing horsemen and this horse is clearly hot and sensitive. He was trying to manage this horse and rode more strong in his hand than I know him to normally do so he absolutely did the right thing for the horse in excusing himself from the ring and dismounting when it was safe and the horse took a breath. Well done Julio, I will always be a fan and he couldn’t be a nicer person to compete side by side with as well and has lovely soft horses typically.
Ha! I know exactly what that feels like! It’s also quite embarrassing when it happens. Pretty much the same thing happened with Frosty and I at state show. That and she nearly ran over the judge. Heh, should have been DQed.
Beautifully handled. It’s really hard to keep your cool and stay out of the horse’s mouth as much as you can. It’s a balancing act. Keep them from bursting forward in a bolt, and stay out of their mouth so that it’s not as triggering for the horse, and avoid tension so your horse doesn’t flip over backwards.
Some things to point out. After the cut off, when they asked the horse to piaffe, that was asking the horse to spend his energy in a productive way. By the basic way collection works, it makes forward impulsion into upwards force.
The thing that really impressed me, other than pulling out, was how they handled the horse after they got off. They took the horse all the way back to their comfort zone by starting ground work. The horse knows how to do ground work such as giving to the rein. This act of going to the very basics helps the horse calm down. They aren’t being asked for anything hard or complicated.
Beautifully built horse. Great rider.
A magnificent looking horse and a wise and kind rider.
HEY...great rider, to pay attention to the mood of his beautiful, sensitive horse.
A true horseman.....he knew something was not right...thank you for considering your horse......
I'm not even a horse person, but even I can see that this was a true sportsman and athlete who put his horse first. Wow, I have such respect for this person and his magnificent horse.
Excellent horsemanship.
What a gentleman, handled that like the pro he is and a true horseman. Sorry but no fail here. Fabulous example of a horse not feeling it and a rider who knows when to let that one go
Still an exquisite horse and a gentle rider .
A coach once told me you can never have too much power, but you can have more than you can handle... this is poor riding... death grip on the reins and saying go .. go where??? horse is cranked in, his elbows are behind his back at times.. way too much tension coming from the mixed aids... tension breeds tension... this horse needed a softer more relaxed rider to get rid of the tension and not one that kept him tense... this was brutal to watch, no tempo, no rhythm, no way he could get a score, just not their time, or maybe not the right combination of horse and rider
I am glad he called it, the horse was not up to showing, it will work out eventually. Horses are temperamental that way.
I wouldn’t call it a disaster horse just was very tense and having a bad day and that’s reality it happens 🤷🏼♀️ rider handled very well tho nice to see 🥰
Such a magnificent horse and talented rider. It is unfortunate that they did not line up at that performance. It happens but the rider handled it beautifully.
Poor horse was so stressed, the rider was very kind and didn’t push him 💜
This horse is soooooo beautiful 😮
The horse ligit looks like it's teleporting.
Also the rider has great horsemanship, and handled the situation VERY well
Super spicy! Got himself all kinds of worked up bless him.
Definitely the right decision to abandon the test as that horse was not going to calm down at all. Mine used to start a bit wound up sometimes but she soon settled the further we got into the test. He did well to persevere as long as he did as I think I would have abandoned the test a lot sooner.
Amazing! I love it!!!
I don't think that horse appears totally sound and wonder if perhaps there was a pain issue? 🤔
Very respectable. Made me happy.
Love it, what a good team mate
Well handled 👏. His poor horse was having a serious meltdown.
Caring rider, on a very hot horse. Literally, did you see the heat coming off him.
The horse is like a coiled spring!
we all have off days :) he tried to work through it with his partner but his partner just wasnt feeling confident it looked like. and as a great rider knows his partner, he knew it was worth more to end on a note where his friend was listening to him as best he could and end on a good note :) i respect him for that! he even found riding him out wasnt good either and walked beside him :) maybe next time will be better for yall!
For more reality on RUclips! 👍
Julio made the best of this situation... i don‘t know him and i don‘t know the horse. But every horse could be such impressed and tense. It‘s not easy to controll these situations and bring it to a good end - especially in this scene. Well done 👍
This video has been edited to appear much more erratic than reality. And I know this freestyle music and this is not it. Totally edited through much of the video. Probably one of the biggest crowds she’s been in front of and all those bright lights. Horrible headline on this video. Sensationalism. SMH. Shame on you, DressageHub.
What a beautiful horse!
Handled well by rider publicly. There is something extremely uncomfortable to me about this horse, very uncertain, anxious.
Horses can become extremely anxious and nervous, worried they may do wrong let's hope his training had nothing to do with this
This horse is VERY talented some times we just have an off day or don’t feel like doing something the handler is really good
What an emphatic rider!
The horse was fighting him. I saw the rider using his spurs to get the horse moving but the horse wasn't listening. He wanted to canter instead of trot. Horse just wasn't feeling it. The rider knew this and just stopped the test. It happens.
Super tense and hot. Like sitting on a rocket 😁
Toll das er am Ende abgestiegen ist. Das könnte kaum ein Reiter dieser Klasse! Hut ab!
