Alex, thanks for the step by step video. I'm a retired Air Force and school teacher. Not a mechanic, but I can follow good instructions. I bought this car in an auction as a project , it had a bad water pump. I took it to a mechanic and I think he didn't want to attack the problem, so he told me I needed a new motor. Hello Brooo! please help me. Is it possible to change just the tensioner without disassembling everything you disassembled to access the water pump? very recently, they put a water pump and a tensioner aftermarker on my 2.7, after a couple of weeks began to make noise when starting it in the mornings, (I think this noise is because the non-original tensioner is with problems) the car runs super well, has not jumped the chain, it's just that when you turn it on in the morning sounds, after being perfectly lubricated I turn it back on and the noise is gone. I would like to know if replacing only the tensioner can solve the problem, I think that's the problem. My idea is simply to disassemble the valve covers (to be able to activate the tensioner as you do in 1:10:13). pull the tensioner out from the side, put the tensioner back on and activate it. Is it essential to tune the vehicle first, or can I just remove the aftermarket tensioner and put the new one (mopar)? because to check that the vehicle is on time, I would have to do all the steps you did to check if the mark below is correct, that implies disassembling the damper. thank you very much in advance pd: forgive my writing in English, I am writing from Chile.
Hello thanks for watching. Have the chain and and guides been replaced if not I definitely recommend doing it right and going in with new stuff but to answer your question yes you can remove the tensioner Without disassembling the front cover you have to remove both valve covers and hold both cams /Locked in place and make sure that the tensioning Guide keeps tension on the chain. If the chain slips out of place you will have to remove front cover to time it properly.good luck be safe have fun

Hello, how are you, what kind of oil did you put in the end and tell me if I can change the water pump myself and if it is mandatory to put a new chain
Hello and thanks for watching. The oil I used was 5w20. Doing it yourself depends on your skill set and tool availability. I highly recommend you doing the timing chain and tensioner as well as timing chain guides, so you won’t have to go back in and do those if it goes out in the future. You have to remove the timing chain to get to the water pump. Please use quality parts if you do decide to do it yourself.

Hey there if it has jumped timing there is a 50/50 chance that you may have internal engine damage because you have a interference engine, that means when a timing chain has jumped out of time the engine valve will contact the engine piston.the next step should be a cylinder leak down test if you suspect it has jumped timing hopefully it is something else
Alex thank you, I need help. when I crank the motor doesn't start but the upper radiator gets full of pressure right away? can you tell me what it might be? a clogger radiator, or a head gasket

Alex, you said at about the 29' mark, right before you started to remove the hydraulic tensioner, that the evident play in the timing chain caused the engine to "jump time". If it had jumped time, wouldn't that have caused the valves to impact the pistons, leading to far more damage? Particularly, if it jumps time, will you find that the dots on the sprockets are misaligned with the links on the chain? I am doing this job on my own 2.7 L engine in a Dodge Intrepid '04. You give me some good ideas about how to determine if the chain is loose and how to determine if the water pump pulley is loose. I don't have the front cover off yet. I'm supposed to get a suitable pulley removal tool tomorrow. While I'm at it, I'm also going to replace my radiator and several components of the cooling system. I'm also going to flush out the heater core.
In the month since my last post I've gotten the front cover off, replaced the thermostat, removed the primary and secondary chains and all the guides. So far, I've found nothing that would have caused all the noisy trouble. I've replaced both the secondary chains and secondary tensioners. The torque on the cam cap bolts is 105 inch-lb, achieved incrementally.
I've gotten my new water pump installed. Before I can proceed to the primary timing chain I need to put the lower parts back on. I had removed them to inspect the crankshaft bearings. Finding nothing amiss, I'll put it all back together.

Bro I'm in a major bind and I need you're expertise. I'm working on the 3.5 charger and I was putting the timing belt back on but notice marks came a bit out of line. I tried to tweak the driver side sprocket a tiny bit to get it back in line but in doing so the sprocket shifted like a whole 45° turn on its own like spring loaded kinda. What would I do in this situation?
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I was able to do a full turn clockwise and get it back in the mark but it scares me because I know its one of those interference engines.
@@marv.mon.9845 you can make sure it didn’t not hit the piston by turning it back the way it sprung towards in a controlled turn and go slow, turn it if you feel resistance or you can no longer turn it then it hit but if you don’t feel anything you are good, just a quick text
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I did, it shifted counter clockwise first to like 9 o clock. Then I slowly tried to set it back at 12 where the marks line up but it shifted again past the mark to like 2 o clock. I didn't want to go backwards so I did a full turn slowly with no binding other than those little spring feeling tensioned areas but I managed to get back on 12 to line up
Yes it would definitely cause a code with the stock computer set up,if you have tuning software like HP tuner you can configure the engine pcm however you want And Disable the code
Could this be the problem on my 08 2.7 it doesn’t mark hot on the temp gauge but the minute I actually drive it it starts to mark hot and the gauge will fluctuate back and forth between being idle and driving

I would like to know if replacing only the tensioner can solve the problem, I think that's the problem.
My idea is simply to disassemble the valve covers (to be able to activate the tensioner as you do in 1:10:13).
pull the tensioner out from the side, put the tensioner back on and activate it.
Is it essential to tune the vehicle first, or can I just remove the aftermarket tensioner and put the new one (mopar)?
because to check that the vehicle is on time, I would have to do all the steps you did to check if the mark below is correct, that implies disassembling the damper.
thank you very much in advance
pd: forgive my writing in English, I am writing from Chile.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor Ok Broo.. thank you very much for your valuable response
I will do it very carefully and as you propose it
Do u Thinck I can use a power drill to remove the
Hermonic balancer bolt out that’s where im stuck at rn and you can’t turn the bolt with out the hearmonice ballencer turning right you need to turn the car in right my battery died so I got to charger it or get a new one it looks new I’m just trying to work on my self because no one around known how to and I’m using this video to help me a little bet at a time when I can
Hey buddy a power drill will not work you need a strong electric 1/2 inch impact gun or Air impact 1/2 inch. Or do what I did on the video I will have to watch again to see what I did
Thanks for watching as well,I’m glad my videos are helping
Ok think you sir
Question i turned the driver side top cam a little far to the driver fender can i back it up to time it
Yes you can move it to line up the color links to the cam indention
Does it matter if you turn the crank counterclockwise?
It should not matter
Excellent video with details. Thank you for the knowledge. Should the knock sensor be changed out as well? Thank you!👍
Thank you very much for helping me something else, identify that it is the water pump because it is draining through a small hole that is next to the engine under the antifreezer thermostat
I have no slack in my chain to fit the tensioner in its already tight with the passenger guide in. If I add tensioner I can’t rotate crank, any advice? My cam marks are 36 links apart, no slack, 90 link chain
Can you send me a picture on Instagram so I can see what’s going on for myself
@@AlexTheCarDoctor this situation was the tensioner not depressed all the way down
That’s what I figured but I need to see a picture to be sure,I’m glad you figured it out
Really good thanks for good video helped a lot5
My pleasure buddy thanks for watching
Hello, how are you, what kind of oil did you put in the end and tell me if I can change the water pump myself and if it is mandatory to put a new chain
Hello and thanks for watching. The oil I used was 5w20. Doing it yourself depends on your skill set and tool availability. I highly recommend you doing the timing chain and tensioner as well as timing chain guides, so you won’t have to go back in and do those if it goes out in the future. You have to remove the timing chain to get to the water pump. Please use quality parts if you do decide to do it yourself.
I have a 07 charger with 2.7 and it was running decent and now it won’t crank . Timing chain has been loose but now it won’t start . The engine still turns so I’m Thinking it jumped time .. is it too late to replace timing chain if it jumped time and won’t start or is there still hood ?
Hey there if it has jumped timing there is a 50/50 chance that you may have internal engine damage because you have a interference engine, that means when a timing chain has jumped out of time the engine valve will contact the engine piston.the next step should be a cylinder leak down test if you suspect it has jumped timing hopefully it is something else
Alex thank you, I need help. when I crank the motor doesn't start but the upper radiator gets full of pressure right away? can you tell me what it might be? a clogger radiator, or a head gasket
Hello and thanks for watching. It sounds like you have a bad head gasket. The next step is to do a block test, also the car may start if you leave the radiator cap off with the gas pedal to the floor the first 15 sec then release and try again with out the pedal.
Get with asap I'm in progress of doing ng that need to know all I need to replace......thanks by the way too Bro
Everything should come in one kit. Get the timing chain water pump kit.
Is the guide that the tensioner pushes supposed to wiggle back and fourth on the bottom spacer?
From what I remember yes but to be on the safe side can you send me a video on Instagram

You’re awesome man
Hello I have a code p0016 and changed crank and camshaft wires as well and took the battery negative out and it ran fine but then the check engine light came back on I went back to autozone and same code but this time it had a leak of water on the right side underneath the compressor you think I need to change everything or just the water pump? If so from where should I order , and the right part because there are tons of it , it's a Dodge charger 2009 2.7 saludos.. n ty. God bless 🙌
Hey there thanks for watching the water pump needs to be replaced along with all the timing components that’s what’s causing that Code, for parts go to Napa
So It Seems One Or Another May Also Change The Thermostat Also.. Good Job Along With Instructions..
Buenas tardes disculpe keria preguntarle sobre el tiempo de Charger es k yo estoy arreglando uno es un Dodge Charger 2.7 y estoy batayando con el puesta a tiempo
Nice how you covered those missing bracelets on the intake because I was thinking amazing how intake came off good video thanks
Thanks for the feedback. I try to cover all that I can in my videos.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor is this the same engine in the dodge 2010 Avenger SXT 2.7
Yes it is it’s just turned sideways in a front wheel drive configuration
Sir ...so my charger start now but seems like if was misfire a spark plugs or a vacuum line and it get hot a middle of the hot gage..can't get to stay steady so am thinking head gasket ...can you please help me.....or can it be water pump...maybe ...it looks like this and sounds like that
First thing you need to do buddy is a block test that will test for a blown head gasket
The timing chain may have jumped
It's a T40 torx for the timing cover
I'm currently doing it to the same exact vehicle
I hope you could do a cam job on the 2.7 dodge engine
I’ll see what I can do for you buddy!
You think it easy for me to change my own oil in a 3.6 charger I seen videos it look so easy I just need the jack stands I have all the tools only thing I Wana no which way to turn the oil plug on the pan left or right or will it have it stamp with direction
Would it be the same way with the Sebring it’s a 2.7 everything identical even the timing alignment?
Only difference is the engine placement, doing a timing job in front wheel drive cars is a lot harder/time consuming
I’m having trouble with the power steering pump ,, need to release serpent belt it’s a Sebring 2008 I watched videos and they are all different
@@Salinashector1992 timing is the same not the drive accessories. If I had one in the shop I would have done a video special for you, it’s hard to explain better showed
Any videos on how to time the cams?
No sorry
I got a question do I need to get the whole timing chain kit with sprocket and all when replacing the Water pump
Alex are you in Florida close to Altamonte
Hey buddy I’m located in ATLANTA
What kit did u use an where did u get it from
I recommend the Cloyes brand and you can find it on eBay,Amazon, and sometimes your local part store
Thanks for all the information and tip's, you skills are very high and professional
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed the video
I have a 06 chry 300 and an 08 charger, both need this repair, 2.7 engine is a coolant nightmare

Line the marks on chain you didn't have to put the crank at tdc from mark on crank and mark on pump ?
That a good one Bizzy bone
My pleasure thanks for watching Bizzy bone work his magic lol
Hey car doctor. Im currently working on the same engine for a customer. But i forgot to place everything in timing. I took the tensioner out and both cames spring out of place. How can i make sure its back in correct timing befire i put the chain back on?
About to do one tomo thanks for the video !
That’s what’s up! You got this... let me know if any questions or issues arise while you’re doing it...
How much this job cost with parts and labor wise
@@jahonbutler2907 Roughly $700 parts and labor, but it all depends on where you live and the shop labor rates in your area...
Fantastic mechanic bro!! I'm about to have the same job done on mine tomorrow
Are you doing the job yourself
@@AlexTheCarDoctor no but I usually try to do my own work but no not this time especially with a 2.7 engine I don’t wanna fool around and mess something up!
I feel you! Let it be somebody else’s problem lol
@@AlexTheCarDoctor lol right! I been watching you Channel for a couple days now I’m a fan. I wish you were in Texas I’d let you do all my mechanical work
Thanks for the support man
Alex, you said at about the 29' mark, right before you started to remove the hydraulic tensioner, that the evident play in the timing chain caused the engine to "jump time".
I just replaced my thermostat and im still seeing leak from the weep hole does that mean i have to replace the Water pump?
It sounds like it.if it was leaking from the weep hole it was always the water pump
Good to know, i assume you had to drain the oil correct?.
So if it is leaking out the weeping hole near the thermostat its the water pump?
Yes 9 times out of 10
Also check the thermostat housing gasket
Is this guy's joke at 1:28 killed me a real knee slapper. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Hey Alex question here i recently bought a water pump kit from eBay i may have got the wrong one was there any difference between a 2008 and 2010 water pump for dodge charger se 2.7
I got a broken guide the little one on the passenger side and the screw still in the bottom hole I’m trying to get it out
Take a picture and send it to me on Instagram
Does the 09 2.7L still have ignition capacitors?
What size breaker bar do you have ?
1 inch drive
What's that special tool you need that dodge makes that you must have
You talking about for the 2.7?
Can I do this the same way for I got at Chrysler 300 2008 2.7L v6
Hey there yes it’s the same process
Very very informative, I will have to get my 07 Dodge charger V6 2.7 L engine water pump replaced so I see it is a lot of work that goes into it but your video is very informative and I am now a new subscriber thank you so much also I would like to know what is the cost for fixing the water pump in the 07 charger and PS could you come and fix my car LOL ❤️
Good vid bro. How much would you usually charge/ask for a job like this in US?
In total 700 to 800$
Bro I'm in a major bind and I need you're expertise.
You should be fine just turn it back in position, this happens to me often not so much now in my younger days I mean
I didn't want to go backwards so I did a full turn slowly with no binding other than those little spring feeling tensioned areas but I managed to get back on 12 to line up
@@marv.mon.9845 it sounds like you are good hey I know the feeling when you think something has gone very wrong
Good work man keep the videos coming !
I got you! Thanks for watching brother!
I set me crank sprocket a few notches before the mark, do you think that would cause P0016 code? A crankshaft/camshaft misalignment?
Yes it would definitely cause a code with the stock computer set up,if you have tuning software like HP tuner you can configure the engine pcm however you want And Disable the code
with what car mileage should it be done?
Could this be the problem on my 08 2.7 it doesn’t mark hot on the temp gauge but the minute I actually drive it it starts to mark hot and the gauge will fluctuate back and forth between being idle and driving
How is your coolant level? Coolant could be low. Is it leaking any coolant? Try to have a coolant pressure test and Block Test done.
When it first started the coolant was low filled it up to max fill line and bled it but it still heating up no leaks
The next step is to do a block test
Ok thanks for all you’re help I really appreciate it
No problem I’m here for you brother
How much should this coast parts and labor to have it done at a shop
