SHOW NOTES
Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! The hosts of today’s Atheist Experience are Matt Dillahunty and Jim Barrows, welcome back Jim!
Our first caller, Isaac in OH thinks differences in DMT experience is evidence that one could be transported to another dimension. The hosts talk hypotheticals and testing methodologies with safeguards using DMT. We would need evidence to be on board here.
Alexander in Norway defines spirituality as wise thoughts that deepen the understanding of existence. Wouldn’t that then make philosophy spiritual? This is just giving spirituality a new definition but we need to find common ground on nebulous concepts.
Patrick in WA has simple scientific evidence from the bible that modern science has confirmed, for example mountains and valleys in the ocean. That sounds like something one could discover skin diving or diving for food.
Jose in GA gives evidence of people experiencing the holy spirit. How can we tell if someone has actually had an experience with a real holy spirit? We don’t assume people are lying about their experiences, we don't just assume a supernatural explanation.
Kendall in OR asks what evidence would change the mind of a lifelong believer versus a non believer. A god would know what would change our minds but seemingly chooses not to. Our minds aren’t closed, we just haven’t been presented with sufficient evidence.
Kay in NH thinks freedom should be the foundation of morality, not well being. The reason you care about freedom is it is conducive to wellbeing. Matt pointed out the flaw in using freedom as a basis for morality.
Danny in London says if there is a cause of the universe, it rules out every god but an abrahamic god. There is a beginning to our universe but there is no evidence of a creator. Danny fails to provide evidence for this claim.
Mark in IL finds Matt’s hard atheism surprising and believes in a god via skepticism. Matt doesn’t believe in a god but also believes that man has made up god stories. Suspicions of the way things are is not a skeptical approach, the trees aren’t proof of creation.
Last caller, George in TX, finds Romans to be evidence of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The verse is the claim, not evidence, of a resurrection. Quoting the bible doesn’t provide any evidence.
Thanks for tuning in, we are so glad you joined us today. Stay safe and continue wearing masks out there.

It's amazing how you can tell some people have never once been challenged on their beliefs
Bingo. Comfort. All my family members are like that.
@@henrim9348 Same. It sucks.
The main thing I hate about religion is the fact that it stops people from using critical thinking. This guy's a prime example.
Every call:
Matt: "So, this caller claims they have evidence of the Christian God."
Caller: "That's right!"
Matt: "Okay, so let's hear the evidence."
Caller: (surprised Pikachu face)
No, you skipped a step.
It's either "Jesus Christ" or "the empty tomb."
Then Matt says "I don't believe you."
THEN surprised Pikachu face.
I called. Defined god. Matt agreed.
Or:
Matt: "Okay, so let's hear the evidence."
Caller: "Well in the Bible it says..."
Matt: "Why should be believe the bible?"
Caller: "Because it's the word of God."
Matt: "But that's the very thing you're trying to prove, you can't use the bible to prove God, and then when we ask for evidence of the bible's validity say that it's valid because god. That's circular."
Yup. Or the old, "You have to find god and let him into your heart" which is an angle I haven't seen a caller make but lots in the comments. Basically you have to convince yourself first and then once you're convinced (deluded) then you'll believe. Idiots
@@TheTruthKiwi
You should let "God" into your heart? Which ventricle specifically? 😉
" "Sin" is a social construct designed to guilt you into believing you need to be saved from being human."
Good one 👍. I'm stealing that.
Sin is a religious concept and a religious answer to a religious problem that only believers worry about 24/7/365.
Funny how sexual "sins" only affect people who already believe they cause problems. Almost as if they have been gaslighted to feel that way from childhood.
Sin is disobedience

Which is why it's a nonsensical concept.
I love the hesitation and confusion in Kendal’s voice when he was asked to say a proclamation made by god and how we know it was made by god.

@@JamesRichardWiley it never carried any weight to begin with
No no no, that's not how it works. You have to convince yourself that a god exists and then, once convinced, ask him to reveal himself to you. You will have a feeling that he exists and that will be sufficient proof to believe. Then you can have a "personal relationship" with him/it/the thing.
In that case, If I proved Christianity to be true, would you become a Christian by accepting salvation?
@@meerkatsk5170 If proved true, all the rational thinkers would have to have a debate with god over what is morally correct. Because the vast majority of people are subjectively morally superior to god, if the written words are the same as a god's requirements for salvation.

Yes, completely outfoxed with logic and reason and then the sigh fo frustration. I'd like to think that this conversation struck a chord with Kendal and he takes it further and seriously evaluates his theistic beliefs!

Homosexuality is natural, because we’re capable of doing it. Nature doesn’t restrict anything. If it’s within your ability, then it’s natural. It’s the religions that are the prohibitors.
I love the sound that Kendal makes at 3:11. Sounds like his brain is trying to break down from the mental gymnastics he's putting it through
I thought that as well
This is the same Kendal that was advocating for biblical slavery on two separate calls.
Yes. Its him. He also called tall heaven. And his question here has the same logic. If Christianity was true, would you become a Christian?
Yeah...same jackass
Kendall needs to put on a leash and collar
and knock on the next door neighbors door.
God wants us to worship him. Because he is lonely. Because he suffers from depression, because we are not made in his imagine. We made him in our image. He's in our imaginations. Wake up peopleee
It's impossible to know who god made in his image because they would be invisible to us!...roflmao
Some of His behaviour does seem pretty manic
No! Don't wake up or God dissolves away.
@@188basstrom Lol. "Love me!" * sobs *
Actually, I think the caller made a good point even though he messed it up when he tried to explain it. I agree we made God in our image, but maybe to truly "wake up" means to realize that we are made in his image. As such, God wants us to worship him, because we are lonely and because we suffer from depression.
Theists have no difficulty listing the properties of their god, one of which is that he is undetectable.
They tell me that he has never been seen, has always existed, knows the future and is timeless.
He is called father, even though he is not male. He loves me, but has plans to torture me.
He is unavailable for examination, so how did they determine his properties ?

I have proof god exists, and here's how I know. I was at a flat earth gathering the other day discussing the hollow moon, when our chief speaker Bigfoot said that to prove the sun and moon were just holograms we should pray to Ra and he'll show me the way, So I looked directly into the sun, I mean hologram, and said, "Oh almighty god, prove you exist by giving me a sign that the sun is just an hologram", I kept staring into the mid-day sun for another few minutes when my head spun, everything blurred, and flashes appeared, as I fell to the floor screaming at the pain in my eyes I saw angels in the shapes of bright sparks. and THAT proved god exists, see, we're not as stupid as you think we are you damned unbelievers. @Ryan G. I'm super creeped out right now because my real name is Ryan and my last name starts with G.
As your question, so? What does that have to do with anything. Is this the old "it's complex so it must have been designed" argument? Cause that's not the hallmark of design.
@Ryan G. Perhaps if you actually explored these topics you would have a better understanding. I don't know where you learned about the Big Bang but in none of the vast amounts of documentation you could have read does it state that there was an explosion with no cause. It wasn't an explosion. Not knowing the cause does not mean there wasn't one. Inserting a magical sky daddy into this would require evidence, not baseless assertions.
Why does there need to be a reason? There's no reason to think there needs to be a reason for why the universe exists. A mechanism is all it requires, not a reason.
Complexity does not require a designer. You can't use complexity to detect design. Stop doing that.
DNA doesn't come from non-living matter. It came from RNA. How did RNA form? From organic compounds. The process is called Abiogenesis. We don't have all the answers as to how it happened. You still don't get to insert a magical sky daddy.
@Ryan G. Again, the process is called abiogenesis. The Miller-Urey experiments and similar experiments explore how non-living compounds became living. Look into it.
The first particles condensed from the super heated plasma that existed in the first moments after the big bang. The first particles where quarks and leptons and it only took less than a second for them to form. All the matter and energy in our universe has always existed, it wasn't created.
Ryan G.
Hi, we know it to be true through extensive examination of the evidence.
The organic compounds develop though natural processes, as Jebuslivesso explained lots of work is being done at the moment. We will figure out the exact mechanism in good time just as we did with evolution.
At the moment we don’t have every single piece of the puzzle, but we have enough to give us a fairly good idea.
@Ryan G. Evidence.
I loved the exasperation in his voice when it dawned on him how stupid his argument is.
The most perplexing question for die hard Christians, “whats your evidence”
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
These religious people never think this through. I'm always amazed by how twisted/exposed they get by these calls yet they persist with their stubbornness.
Materialists do the exact same thing with their belief in a physical universe independent of consciousenss. I lost it when he quickly switched from jesus to science
There were people in the time of Christ who represented the status quo, the people in charge of who got venues and who didn't and they challenged Jesus with their knowledge/science. Luke 20:27-40 One bride seven brothers "Who's married to her in the resurrection." If you did some research on how Jesus answered every critic you'd be one the best theologians on the internet. "Why do your disciples dow what is unlawful on the Sabbath (havesting grain)?" Jesus: The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath.
8:10 "...(sigh) yes..."
This is everything to me!
Poor Kendall sounded utterly defeated. I feel sorry for him.
Here in the u.k if grown adults talk to imaginarey being's they end up been sectioned. In the us its called christianity. it really does boggle my mind.
Unfortunately, also here in the UK, grown adults gave Johnson and Co an 80 seat parliamentary majority because they believed him when he said he had a 'great deal' with the EU and an 'oven ready' Brexit chicken.
We have our nutters, but we are a country which is thoroughly secular
Also in the UK, do you not know that we have state funded religious schools and permanent seats in our upper house of the legislature (the House of Lords) for Christian Bishops? Our Head of State is also the Head of a Church! As a Brit I would not gloat over US religious issues, the issues here may not be quite so in your face but they are no less insidious.
David? Come on mate! Yes, we're moving in the right direction - close to 60% of the UK population describe themselves as non-religious. However, around 30% still identify as Christian (8% strongly so) and some of them presumably pray - i.e. speak to an imaginary being. No one is being sectioned for praying (obviously) for the simple reason that praying is not considered psychotic behaviour!

Matt's case for "positive atheism" is not a stand alone case. Remember, atheism is the _denial_ of the deity claim, it's a lack of belief of gods. It's not waiting to be acted on to respond to the case someone else is making, or that would be it's habitual characteristic.

I do enjoy the intellectually honest callers that aren’t working off a script. This caller answered honestly when he was asked a question, even when he could see the answer was hurting his cause.
Matt’s great at logic and owning the arrogant jerk callers. He’s not the best suited to callers like this though. When the caller is honest there’s an opportunity for a more meaningful discussion.
He wasn't honest. He was just trying to shift the burden of proof because he already knew that there was no valid evidence. That's not an honest approach to the challenge given.
Verruca I agree his approach wasn’t the best way to discover truth. But if he was already using sound reasoning to come to all of his beliefs he wouldn’t believe in Christianity. I don’t expect theistic callers to have sound epistemology. In fact I don’t expect much. I’ve watched a lot of these episodes and have incredibly low standards for what to expect from callers. The odd one that doesn’t read from a script and will take a question on board instead of responding with a knee-jerk response to avoid having to think is surprisingly rare.

That is about the faintest possible praise that could be offered.
Irrational people are typically not convinced by rational argument. Still, it's something that we can decently offer.
Diluting that argument - in effect, introducing a somewhat flawed argument instead - might serve as a kind of appeasement for those who aren't able to reason well. But what does that ultimately serve? It's a lie, and thus it sets them up, in turn, for ridicule. In other words, it betrays their trust.
is it really hard to understand the word evidence??
Most are allergic to logic, facts, reason, scientific evidence and research.
Apparently, yes...can lead to cognitive dissonance for theists.

any time he wants it.
Still, he has wants and needs.
This kind of gobbledygook

It's challenging to reason with people that have abandoned it
The God of the Bible is very much the product of the imagination of an ignorant people. He has all the human desires and flaws. He is jealous, angry, capricious, impatient , wrathful, ad nauseum. His knowledge of science is that of a primitive, ignorant man. His use of weaponry (he throws hailstones at enemies) is the same as that of primitive, ignorant man. He lacks compassion for those who do not idolize and worship him. In short, there is nothing tangible to set the biblical god apart from the state of humanity at the time of the writing of the bible.
As we’ve all shown multiple times in multiple threads, he is anything but omniscient and omnipotent. Evidence for his powers consists only of written assertions by these ancient, ignorant people attesting to his power. Yet, because these writers were, in many cases, unaware of what others had written, they include assertions that totally contradict one another. Using these contradictions, it is easy to prove that God is not omniscient, nor is he omnipotent.
Those stories are nonsense written by unknown people to explain things they, in their total ignorance of almost everything, could not understand. Those stories could not have been authored by an omniscient God. We should take nonsense stories like this as evidence that the Bible is false and should not be used as a Holy, divine document.

The word “salvation” concerns an eternal, spiritual deliverance. When Paul told the Philippian jailer what he must do to be saved, he was referring to the jailer’s eternal destiny (Acts 16:30-31). Jesus equated being saved with entering the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24-25).
What are we saved from? In the Christian doctrine of salvation, we are saved from “wrath,” that is, from God’s judgment of sin (Romans 5:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9). Our sin has separated us from God, and the consequence of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Biblical salvation refers to our deliverance from the consequence of sin and therefore involves the removal of sin.

how many people prayed to God in war and were still horribly killed
I would have liked to hear his explanation for the science line.
I’m getting a tshirt with that last sentence on it
Sometimes it's hard to watch this show because of the ignorance of the callers. They're absurdities hurt my intellect
LOL. "They're absurdities hurt my intellect."
The deep sigh is so telling. The hosts are asking the hard questions the theists can't answer.
8:05 WE WIN
I think he said "science" in sarcastic frustration, not to be serious. The answer he could not say is, "Because it's in the bible," because he doesn't understand those are the words Matt wants to hear, but when he said "because of Jesus" that *is* what he's trying to say.
If Christianity is True, why wouldn't "God" reveal itself for the sake of Muslims, Hindus, and others who are perfectly willing to worship/accept a god?
Although a personal relationship is a two-step process where you have to know something exists first before you can decide to have a meaningful relationship with someone, this does not apply to God. This is because He does not need to appear physically or do something on a global scale in the first place to convince the ones he knows would have a relationship with him if he revealed to them that he is the true God. Remember, he is omniscient so just like he knows what evidence would convince unbelievers he exists, he also knows ways to convince somebody without resorting to appearing physically or on a global scale.
More importantly, even if he did appear physically, The bible is full of stories and situations of Israel’s not only disobeying GOd but choosing to follow another God despite having God physically appear to them almost on demand in some form. We even have evidence that God only shows miracles when he knows it would potentially lead into a meaningful relationship with him. So we would expect him to skip the first step and go right into the second. Thus, If you are talking about the Christian God specifically, then you have to accept all this as a reality and showing such evidence does not mean someone will automatically choose to enter into a relationship with him.
You are also making the assumption that most if not all of them are disbelieving based upon intelluctual reasons. For many of these faiths, they believe simply because they were raised to believe or pressured by their government to believe or makes them feel good or just don't know or don't care enough to find out the other side.
@@meerkatsk5170 These concocted excuses are a waste of everyones time. The more reasonable explanation is that the god you believe in simply does not exist.
@@meerkatsk5170 That's some of the best work I've seen in all my life. I developed a theory where *GOD* only educates us about Himself based on how much LOVE we have to give. The smarter *GOD* makes us about Himself, the more potential we have for doing damage.
It's the people closest to us and who know us the best and who we rely on the most who can strike the deepest wounds.
My goto guy here would be Ted Kaczynski. He's like the line from Michael Card's song El Shaddai, "You are the *GOD* who really sees the outcast on her (his) knees."
Ted literally shredded the best of us. A guy caught him with forensic-linguistics, a shot in the dark. One of us was smarter than Ted.
I'm so impressed, I don't pray much either, or spend time in worship, and now because of Covid-19 I don't go out ministering and do prepare to do that. Apparently I spend/spent nearly the same amount of time on this as you do/have.
@@meerkatsk5170 So why could He not convince all ANGELS who'd SEEN HIM throughout their entire, ah, EXISTENCE, and were even perhaps CONNECTED to Him, in heaven? A realm pervaded by His presence?
@@meerkatsk5170 Also, are African converts slighted against, or something? Many are practically starving to death? And yet no manna can fall?
And what is an 'adulterous generation' ? and wasn't that only a SINGULAR one?
These people seem to always ask the same questions.
They can't really come up with good new arguments, so they rely on the ones that have been debunked, time after, time after, time.
They never watched the show and think their clever because these "questions" which have been answered numerous times.... Proceed with next Theist etc....
did you hear him at the end "oh nevermind" lol
The way this video ended….😂😂
Knock knock
Who is there?
Reality!
Worst thing that can happen to a theist…
"theism" is your strawman argument, "I'm without theism, I'm an a-theist." Yeah, you're lacking the study of theology too!
@@NyxSilver8 Matt is a fully qualified minister, so your allegation is false. I became an atheist because I read six different versions of the Bible in their entirety and I engaged in a decade of comparative religious study, so again, your allegation is false.
@@NyxSilver8 Now that is a strawman argument and one typical for people who try to defend something undefendable. This is exactly the same someone would say about i.e. astrology, "you have to study it to understand it!", no, I don't have to, it is totally illogic and has no ecidence, so no use to go into further detail.
@@guidokorber2866 Matt makes the claim he's 1. an educator, 2. he's a positive atheist, and 3. he claims to be delivering good arguments for the Separation of Church and State.
He doesn't do any of those things. He doesn't defend, and he doesn't instigate his baseless assertions into reality.
If he learned something about astrology that would be one thing. I sent Matt an email that included me as the 1st Tarot Card, *_The Magician,_* without knowing he thinks he is a magician! This guy can't hide his ignorance from a 12 year old kid.
You don't know any theology, you don't know any astrology, and you don't know the Tarot.
@@NyxSilver8 you know what I find really irritating about you theist guys?
That fact that you seem to think your gibberish means anything.
Astology is as much bullpucky as any other religion, it just has no god in it. I don't need to study astrology garbish as mauch as I don't need to study religion garbish. Astrology even fails to recognize, that due to the precession of the earth axis your star signs have shifted. Nothing beyond that is necessary to debunk the stuff. (Though there are many more points that easily show how much BS it is)
"Close hearted". What?
I think he was accusing him of having high cholesterol. :P
Christian: God Gives Us Free Will.
God: About that Pharaoh...
Some people refer to the part of our minds where we feel emotions as the "heart." It's just a language hold over from archaic times.
jymbo1969 Yes, and emotions are not in any way a good thing to rely on for most things.
@@AngryBoozer certainly not if one seeks to find what is real.
"my heart doesn't evaluate evidence"
Before asking him about proclamations you have to tell him what that word means
The concept of god is impossible, it's irrational, it's fictional, it's a concept of ignorance. Any argument for it just proving how ignorant one is, and keeps being, period😊.
Wanna use metaphysics? Wanna use cosmological arguments? Moral arguments? Those are just words, just a god, it's just as word. And for some reason we still have adults believing in mythology
Isn't this the guy who called with Scott Clifton on and declared victory before hanging up?
Reason has left the chat.
Love hearing the utter annoyance in thia guys voice. He didnt expect to be grilled and actually being forced to think. He got over powered in the conversation and didnt like it at all. XD
Ooof. Poor guy never thought it through
I am a christian and love Matt and his thinking and I respect him a lot , cuz he talks about interesting topics like this one , the only thing I dislike a little bit is the cuss words he uses at times, however that's my personal opinion and he doesn't have to change that if he doesn't want to . I learn a lot from these conversations .
Genuine question and I'm not trying to diss your beliefs.
How do you watch this channel and still have conviction in your beliefs. Maybe everytime you watch this channel, you build more strength to break the cycle and think for yourself.
Some people are not up to critical thinking...period.
With all the things humans now know, the bar of proof of God's existence is rising higher and higher. A creator of the universe would have to be able to do something obvious on a universal scale upon request, and it has to be for anybody, not just "believers".
Something is always the ultimate and concurrent end of the line of explanation not explained by anything else and is Self-explaining. *GOD* is always fully actualized and never potential in *_need_* of _actualization._ So, it doesn't matter how intelligent we become, we can't ever supplant that Being with something of our own making.
Kendal speaking in riddles.
I thought in the begining '"speaking in tongue's was considered "possesion"
As usual when asked for evidence they take about beliefs. what can you prove is what matters.
Funniest ending EVER!
