Blackie I have a stove almost identical to that... earlier version , no glass in front. I also have one of the old military stoves, and I bought a new Pomoly Dweller Max 2.0 SS Stove. Haven't camped with any of them... waiting for fall / winter 2023. My back is healing from a TLIF Fusion. I like that type of stove... it basically has the secondary burn, which is great. My tent ⛺️ is a Kodiak 12x12 Lodge tent w/ floor. I did buy a Carbon Monoxide detector because the lodge tent ⛺️ is pretty tight. I did put a bolt, washer & nut on that lit'l hole on mine. I also caulked that stove pipe adapter and put a wire across it for security. I put red fire proof rubber on a fiberglass stove jack for tighter fit and put lit'l screws at each pipe section with wire to keep the puffing tent from pulling the sections apart. ...Alan in 🇨🇱

Hey if I can give you a tip you need to invest in three layers of foil for the ground or beneath your body .
You cannot have a stove run all night .
I've stopped getting pains . 30 years of camping and cold and I discovered foils last year by accident . My last trip was three layers of foil and I slept 7 hours solid ..
Good luck with the stove idea , but I still cannot imagine a way to keep a front loading stove lit for seven hours .
So you wait till it goes out , wait for the reality of the cold to hit .

I think these were called shepard's stoves when I was younger. Those wings are a good spot to melt snow for water if you aren't in a hurry, which you shouldn't be. One thing you could think about is adding a spark arrester. Just another piece of pipe with a third hole or even a can about a 1 lb. coffee can with both ends open and a hole in the side to fit on your pipe. Wood and steam heat are the best for warming up deep inside and loosening arthritis in the joints.

Thanks Blackie. In cabin use in PA for deer hunting, we do understand managing stove draw and fuel, in order to feed last when the night owl goes to bed at 12:00 till the morning owl gets up around 4 or 5:00. We all fall into the process quickly after knowing each other all these years.
I haven't done a hot tent yet, but been learning up a lot over the viral years.

I’m 44 and we would burn thru what we cut in summer months and about the last month of winter would have to be out in the snow cutting and busting wood. And boy once we got a gas powered wood splitter I thought we were crapping in high cotton buddy. But central heat and air heat in the winter time does NOT compare to the heat that a wood stove will bring to the house. Plus power goes out and you could still cook.

Hey Blackie- I think this stove will work for you depending upon your set-up. As far as durability, it will be interesting to see how it wears with usage. I remember up in Alaska in the Arctic Brigade, we used to set up a small Yukon stove in a GP medium tent with liner in temps below zero, and it actually worked well. Also, the small pot belly stoves were used as well back then. Im looking forward to your hot tent set-up. Thanks, and you and Mrs Blackie be safe-

Having a small wood stove in a tent can be a real convenience!
However... Far too many people think that these small stoves will keep them cozy warm all night... they will not! They are designed to heat up a small space for a short period of time and to cook on.
You are correct about needing a "Damper" to work with the draft.
Whoever designed that particular stove made it way too complicated! Their ash collection chamber and re-burn chamber (which won't actually work) only waste space that should be used for extra fuel capacity.
Living in the cold North taught me... simple is best.

I never had my tent and stove in really cold weather
Here in Florida it rarely gets down in the teens. 40s and 50s is more like the usual winter lows.
I would probably have to feed my stove several times on a really cold night. I would have to arrange my cot so I could reach over and stick a piece of wood in the stove every couple of hours.
I tuck a hot water bottle or a hot red brick wrapped in a towel down in the foot of my sleeping bag in really
      Cold weather .

Blackie 😊 I’ve got iffy knees, new hips and 2 back surgeries 😢. I’ve always camped with mum and dad in a full canvas tent ⛺️. The first tent we had had, was at the time called an MRI Tent ⛺️. Blackie it rained in for fun. The tent my grandma bought for mum and my Auntie. But my dad go the tent set up. But only God Knows why my Auntie pulled all the pegs and smacked them back in straight?????????? Let’s just say, that tent took off like a blinking sail???? I was hanging off for dear or death. That was our tent from that point on. She wanted nothing too do with tent after that.i think I was going 4 at the time. Ok I’m older know. I’m 56 and have been going tooo Abersoch North Wales for 53 yr. Yet I’m 56 and still going there.. I meet kids I kinda grew up with. We still meet 😅up in the same place. • @PabloP169

I believe that that hole in to top cover plate is to allow a hook to be used to lift that cover plate off when it is hot. Best way would be to weld a small piece of pipe (larger than the existing hole) with a plug on the bottom of it. This would allow the lifting hook to still ork yet stop the smoke or flame coming out of the hole.

If you haven't addressed cots, I hope you will in this series. Years ago I purchased an expensive, heavy duty, highly rated cot from a respected manufacturer. Because of the placement of a spreader bar I woke up in the middle of the night convinced I was crippled for life. I don't want to make a mistake like that again.
I look forward to your observations and recommendations if you find time to shed a little cot knowledge on us . Thanks, Rip

What you do is find a coffee pot that fits over that hole in the top of the stove so you get flames dirrectly onto the bottom of the pot when you want to boil water in a hurry.
They made big cooking pots with a reduced bottom diameter that would fit down inside the eye of the stove so the bottom of the pot was exposed to the flames in the stove.
Of course some people add a little wood to the fire box through that hole but that's not really what it's for.
    You will enjoy your stove.

Would it be inexpensive to replace the knobs with a spring ?

  • @johnndavis7647
    @johnndavis7647 Год назад

When it warms up and you don't want a fire you can take the eye out of the top of the stove and set one of those one burner propane stoves down in it. The canister will hang down inside of the stove with the propane burner resting on its rim on the stove top. When you set your frying pan on top of the burner you can't see the propane burner and it looks like you are cooking on fire.
People will look at you real funny when they see you "cooking" on the wood stove in hot weather.
I use sections of galvanized gas water heater vent pipe painted with flat black bbq grill paint. I bought that at lowes.
I use a vent cap for the gas heater pipe with a piece of aluminum window screen inside it for a spark arrester
The stove draws better with a tall pipe. Also if you do get a spark it has more time to cool as it drifts down in the breeze so you don't scorch your tent roof or worse yet your neighbors tent roof.
My stove is a small , one eye, cast iron stove that I bought at a yard sale.
My tent is a Tent-Smith wall tent with a fire resistant stove jack in the roof.
It is treated with fire retardant but I still got a small scorch spot before I got that extra section of stove-pipe.
