I'll say this: the low-power mode should be great for camping trips where you still want to have some activity logging, or those times when you've completed a long activity (like a hike or marathon) and just need a bit of extra juice to handle the rest of the day. Could be particularly important if you're using the cellular connection.
the apple watch doubles as a smartwatch so in that regards its more powerful and even though the garmin is great for accurate workouts, the apple watch can be your daily watch with great notifications, interface, and amazing display, something the garmin lacks even on their enduro 2

I really have not found much value in training readiness in either Garmin or Athlytic. I do use HRV4Training and also pay more attention to how I feel / muscle soreness/ etc. I track my workouts with intervals.icu. Garmin doesn’t add any extra value for my strength training or CrossFit. And I use a bike computer not a watch when riding.
Great video thanks a lot, I have a Apple Watch Ultra thinking about getting the 3 when it comes out but also thinking about getting a Garmin fenix 7 pro sapphire solar because I’m doing my first ultra next may (56 miles) and worried that the ultra might not last, with the standard low power mode and brightness turned down, would you think the Apple ultra will last the 56 miles or better off getting a Garmin? I’m extremely on the fence atm as I love the ultra just paranoid it won’t last the 56 miler. Thanks a lot 🙏🏼
I wonder why they don’t have a more middle ground. Going from 1 second updates for HR/GPS to 1/2 minute intervals is a big jump. Perhaps a 30 second interval would be a better compromise between accuracy and battery life.
Nice video! Well, 17h of use with full GPS and heart rate accuracy on the “basic” Low Power Mode seems sufficient for me haha. I starting to really training and doing trail run, my biggest run on race day was 4h till now. Looking forward on getting de Ultra and replacing my series 6!
So, if I get the message correctly, Apple made a limited release for Ultratrac, which has been around for 10ish years on a lot of Garmin devices. I know my F2 had it, and now I checked, the F5 (5 years ago) had exactly the same 60 hour promised in ultratrac mode. Not bashing apple, every feature release is welcome (although I'm baffled how many people are actually targeted here), but I have similar feelings like I had when a year ago Polar introduced catch-up navigation features.
How does this affect non-activity battery life? Like if i don’t do any sports activity and only use it as a 24h HR monitor/step counter/notifications and time? How long dose the watch last with one charge?
It'd be nice if you could tweak it a bit like on a Garmin or a Coros. Like, turning off dual band or using "GPS only," using an external strap for HR, turning off all phone connectivity, etc. My old Fenix 6X let you REALLY stretch the battery by choosing what was on or off.
Do you think they will ever allow a selection of how often it updates? Example: every 60 sec, for 45 hours of battery, every 30 seconds for 30 hours, etc?
Unlikely. Garmin likes to keep things super simple for the user which is good and bad. I'd personally like settings to toggle Multi-Band / GPS modes and how often GPS intervals happen.

As an ultra runner I was disappointed with the in house navigation options Apple are offering but glad to see there's a workaround that with Workoutdoors. I'm not sure. I have to assume they'll make it available to 3rd party apps. I'd follow the beta release of WorkOutdoors that developer is very responsive!
Are those Apple Watch do the same as the phone? After a couple years the battery dies faster and starts to have glitch ? It is starting to be expensive to switch a 1000$ watch every couple years.

Good morning Mr. Dave. Do you know if Apple has improved the Low-Low Power mode in Watch OS 10 Beta? I did a 10 miler this morning with the Apple Watch Ultra Public Beta Watch OS 10 with a Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar with surprising results. The APU had a couple wonky GPS tracks, but was really good. The Garmin performed perfectly as usual for me. Thank you, and I appreciate you, your channel, and content. Keep Chasing the Summit?

It really depends what you are doing with your watch and what you want to get out of it. If you mainly want a sport watch the Garmin is probably a better tool. If you want a better smartwatch with cellular capabilities the Apple Watch is much better in that regard.

watchOS 9.1 is currently a Release Candidate which means this could be the version coming in the actual release. But yeah, I'll be testing it further once it's out.
Lol….My first 100 mile finish a couple years ago ended with my watch blank and powered off. I checked later and found that it had died at mile 95! After that I decided to upgrade the original Apex (the watch that died) to a Garmin Fenix 6 pro!
Should’ve given us options to do GPS check ins like every 30 seconds up to 2 minutes. I think most of us would be satisfied with ~20-30 hrs of battery in an activity.
I understand your review from the perspective of an ultra marathon runner, but I think this feature is more focused at hikers and long distance walking. If you are going quickly and making a lot of turns, you obviously need more GPS pings to capture that information. That should be obvious even without testing.

Seems clear now why it was released with only some workouts - faster activities would be a mess GPS wise. Makes you wonder if they offered a mid level compromise with GPS every 1 minute and HR every 30 s or so if it could make it to 30 hrs - that would at least make it for most ultra runners
It would be nice to have a low power mode with reduced HR readings setting in normal mode too and not only in workout mode. Enabling low power mode completely disables HR reading, which is silly.. it's all or nothing right now
Yes, go to Apple Watch settings on your iPhone. Settings > Privacy > Heart Rate. I’ve turned off other sensors I don’t need. And it greatly improves battery life.
I really think they should have flipped the two measurements. GPS every 1 minute and HR every 2 minutes. I am a backpacker, hunter, outdoorsman and I really dont care about HR as much as my tracks when in the backcountry. Also, allowing the users to dial in the measurement frequencies is a no brainer here but......Apple. Still really enjoying the watch though.
when the device is charged at 100%, the data on the loss of charge may not be accurate, because the drop in charge from 100% to 99% can be much longer than from 99% to 98% and so on (когда устройство заряжено на 100%, то данные о потере заряда могут быть не точными, потому что падение заряда с 100% до 99% может быть гораздо дольше, чем с 99% до 98% и так далее)
Good point! I've done several other tests and the percentage drop is still under 2%... Hard to quantify exact because Apple Watch doesn't display decimal place battery resolution.
So reduced accuracy mode is perfect for multi-day paved walks like the Camino de Santiago, but less so for anything strenuous or off-route. I’m assuming the moderate accuracy during on road runs is more due to accelerometer integration than Apple Maps- which is likely why only on foot activities are included.
I just got my Ultra and love the look in feel, as I am writing this I have been wearing the watch for a little over 24 hours and my battery is down to 45 percent. For sure, ideal for camping and backpacking. Not as ideal for faster paced activities.

This is the first public beta build that has a high chance of not being done yet. Hopefully you plan on redoing this video once it’s actually released
watchOS 9.1 is currently a Release Candidate which means this could be the version coming in the actual release. But yeah, I'll be testing it further once it's out.
I wish they separated the HR and GPS. You could give up HR accuracy but keep GPS.
You went the long way to enable Low Power mode. Just swipe up to get the quick toggles and tap on battery.
That menu doesn’t have the new “reduced accuracy” toggle. It’s only under the workout app settings.
More control over this would be nice but apple tends to keep things simple.
They may fix this in an update as you said that this was a beta version and beta versions are for testing purposes, etc..
This is actually a "release candidate" which could end up as the full public release but time will tell!
SUunto 9 Peak Pro review coming?
Yup!
@@ChaseTheSummit Before Christmas?😀
Good job
I understand your review from the perspective of an ultra marathon runner, but I think this feature is more focused at hikers and long distance walking. If you are going quickly and making a lot of turns, you obviously need more GPS pings to capture that information. That should be obvious even without testing.
This is Mont Lafayette at the end of that video right?
Franconia Ridge yes!
@@ChaseTheSummit you probably also hiked Mount Kathadin already? One of rhe best hike i've ever done. It's a really unique hike in North america
@@strungout126 I haven’t done Kathadin yet mainly because it’s a really long drive. I really want to do that one in the winter with some technical ice climbing mixed in! Some day. I’ve mainly focused my trips on the New Hampshire 4000 footers and have done most of them 2 or 3 times. Love the Whites!
@@ChaseTheSummit you should man! I'm from Canada and I did à 8 hours road trip to get there once I talked to a retired military who did like 100 hikes in his life all around the world and he told me: this is something different, unique. He was right. It's a awsome hike to do. Nothing to do with the rockies or anything in the white mountains. I'm a experienced hier and I had a hard time getting down to that one on a rainy night. It's awsome. I hope you try it one day. I'm going back there next summer for sure
you should check out gps accuracy without lowpower mode to check the real accuracy
Check out my in-depth review for that.
Sorry i just using every day this watch and the battery life is over 3 days . Not using the Power mode.
If it’s a beta version , it’s close enough with comparison with garmin.
Nice!
Seems clear now why it was released with only some workouts - faster activities would be a mess GPS wise. Makes you wonder if they offered a mid level compromise with GPS every 1 minute and HR every 30 s or so if it could make it to 30 hrs - that would at least make it for most ultra runners
It would be cool if we had control over how often GPS pinged.
It would be nice to have a low power mode with reduced HR readings setting in normal mode too and not only in workout mode. Enabling low power mode completely disables HR reading, which is silly.. it's all or nothing right now
*Is it possible to turn off the heat rate sensor completely on the apple watch ultra?*
Yes, go to Apple Watch settings on your iPhone. Settings > Privacy > Heart Rate. I’ve turned off other sensors I don’t need. And it greatly improves battery life.
@@shawndavismedia that's what I was thinking. Turn off those sensors to save as much battery life as possible.
I assume this is not a serious question right?
Just our of curiocity. Why do you have "I miss you" as a tattoo on your left arm?
It's in memory of my mom who was greek.
@@ChaseTheSummit I am sorry, I bet she was a great Greek lady! I am also Greek thats why I noticed!
Please do these same comparison tests with the Ultra at full power and also at regular low power mode. We are curious how the gps mapping compares.
Check out my other video where I have several battery tests in different modes on the ultra!
Best low powermode would be. Watch takes gps from phone. Bttery would be much better i think
I don't see New low battery mode on my Apple watch Ultra. Watch Os 9.0.2!!!
It's in WatchOS 9.1 coming soon currently in beta.
If you need this new power mode, just get a Garmin instead
Yeah no
Its nice for those once in a while situations though.
Great video! I’m loving my ultra so far.
Can you see yourself swapping to the Ultra over your garmin?
Maybe someday
Mark Lewis sadly did.
Thanks. The new mode is for walking.
It's available in Running, Hiking, and Walking activities.
@@ChaseTheSummit Yes, but it seems the slow recording is a better fit for walking.
Would let you k le but I’m still waiting for my watch. Ordered it a month ago 😢
when the device is charged at 100%, the data on the loss of charge may not be accurate, because the drop in charge from 100% to 99% can be much longer than from 99% to 98% and so on
(когда устройство заряжено на 100%, то данные о потере заряда могут быть не точными, потому что падение заряда с 100% до 99% может быть гораздо дольше, чем с 99% до 98% и так далее)
Good point! I've done several other tests and the percentage drop is still under 2%... Hard to quantify exact because Apple Watch doesn't display decimal place battery resolution.
It will be interesting as Apple refines this mode over time.
Yep, I'll continue to test once it's out of beta.
Exactly why it is on beta, it’s not even RC yet.
9.1 is currently in RC right now! It's expected to go public very soon.
@@ChaseTheSummit on Monday in the US yeah
I just got my Ultra and love the look in feel, as I am writing this I have been wearing the watch for a little over 24 hours and my battery is down to 45 percent. I’m using all the settings right out of the box, this includes 2 workouts of 40 and 50 minutes. Hoping to get the 36 hours it recommends.
First full charge on mine went to 72 hours and 18% left.
Not in a GPS activity I presume? That's where this new mode can achieve 60 Hours.
