Hey Nilaus, I heard you say in the #29 true megabase VOD your factorio videos are performing a bit on the weak side here in YT and I wanted to tell you how much I love them, please, keep them coming
Your dedication to your youtube channel is remarkable. If I just had enough time to also stop by at your twitch, I'd love to do so. It's noted for future me.
I had a proof of concept build where I used the same train going forward. So one train would be direct loaded from the miners, it would then go into the smelter and would direct load a second train, then that full train and the empty (original) train, would go on and the smelted material would be converted and sent into the empty train and this would go on and so all trains were on loops, but there were fewer trains overall since they all got reused.
Oh man this makes me start a new game just to do this - it's amazing that people can continue to discover new patterns. It would be a lot of fun to try a variant on this that loads on / off the same train for 1-1 conversions - So you pick up iron ore, drive into your iron smelter drive-through and have it converted to iron and loaded back onto the same train, and then drive to an iron dropoff. Pointless ofcourse, but sounds like some fun automation.
Actually, that's genius - Imagine buffering exactly a train's worth of iron in the smelter. Train comes in, is unloaded of ore and simultaneously loaded with plates, then leaves - the smelter processes, then a new train arrives
@@Orlandofurioso95 Clever! I hadn't considered that - it would be a great speed boost to not need to wait for the processing - esp since one of the big perks of this layout is having the trains manage distribution instead of having to do ideal full belt transform assemblies. That would also be some fun automation work to get the buffer to stockpile and the train to handle that gracefully.
@@enkiduo Well, a single steel chest can easily buffer a whole wagon's worth of product. I believe the simplest solution is to let the plates train leave partially filled, with its 2000units plus the productivity bonus instead of a full 4000 units
That's basically the reason I've started every single playthrough in factorio. -played the game, finished it. Dropped it. -saw someone doing something different or a new mod. - oh, I wanna try that. -rinse, repeat.
This is so cool!! I only found Factorio I think in early January (2021) but I've been loving the game and enjoying RUclips channels who teach me more about the game. I love your channel Nilaus! I haven't commented before but since you asked, and also in your update video, said you liked comments, here is one, even if I don't have much to say. Yes to Factorio content! I will be going through your older videos as well in due time and I am sure I will learn from them!
You can use car or tank, but blueprints don't work, you have to place the cars manually. I saw some guy put cars on belts, looked really funny but had very good results for throughput. Would love to see more cars on belts!
Even vs odd is often called parity. For example, I would say, "the rails and assemblers have opposite parity while assemblers and inserter/box are both odd parity"
I also toyed with these designs, but my solution is to re-insert the products back in the same train after on as many stations as possible to minimize train-to-train transfers. Cargo filters make crafting advanced products from a mix of inputs easy.
Hint. Not on this video but generally offshore pumps can be landfilled after they are built on shore of water and they continue working after complete landfill around and on pump. Not a small hole left for the pump. I just remembered Nilaus saying something about the fact that water pumps cannot be built on land like in real life. This is way around it if you want hifi water source with zero water around it.
Did a 2000 spm train to train base once. It ran so smoothly that when I did a bot base later I got totally gobsmacked by how badly the UPS degradation hit. (Yeah my computer is getting old and by looks of it it is going to get older...)
With this design you're unloading the train at 13.85/s, and this is split between 2 smelters, so each smelter can only receive 6.925/s of input. This works for furnaces, that receive 4.188/s of ore inbound, but for other machines it will be a problem.
Hi Nilaus, Love your content! Crazy idea from me: would it be possible to use "car" or Tank" as the buffer chest to reach a 2 tile space instead of the underground+inserter? I have no idea if this would work or how it works with blueprints or anything really just a crazy idea I got after watching your latest public info update on optimization.
Love these crisp builds, it's been very interesting seeing things develop in your True Megabase while you work through the frustration and complexity. Currently reworking an idea from your Launch VODs for bot based science cells. I really liked the raw-in-science-out feel of the units. My builds are not as crisp as yours but they're coming along nicely. Might have to give train to train a go after, I love playing with all the trains.
@Nilaus, Maybe you can remake this video with this info, you can put a car between two beacons and it will function as a chest that is 2 blocks long, this way you don't have to use undergrounds and stuff, you can also use a splitter, just a bit slower than the car but way faster than the underground belt, these options will make your build way more tile-able, the car cant be placed by drones but the splitter can
I've taken a look at the train base idea before, remember that you have to limit the stack size anytime you load/unload from 2 sides. Also there is a way to get the steel to 10b/12b tilable without red inserters even. I have a blueprint book with all my designs. Needs a lot of refining though. drive.google.com/file/d/1104rUYR0Ot-s7OjBczQPmn6B7LkaQQXm/view?usp=sharing Couldn't create a pastebin, file was too big lmao.
@Nilaus any reason the trains have to point the opposite direction? I'm just thinking if they were running the same way you could scale this up as your needs grow. Starting with as little as 4 carriages and moving up to 8/12/16 as required, it provides a migration path from the midgame onwards. Whereas if they are facing the opposite direction you have to keep moving your stations with each upgrade
potentially, but I want to build a big base and then see how much improvement that actually gives. Circuit states can easily eat more calculations than it saves by clocking
@Nilaus, why have you decided to use the undergrounds to bridge the odd-even issue? Couldn't you place down two belts on the same side instead of loading on the "wrong" side and transporting it back underground? What's the advantage of undergrounds in this case?

i just got on this kind of crack a month and a bit ago, so yea. keep em coming, i think i'll be here for a while

Definitely something I haven't tried before !
Thanks !
Nice. I expected you to mention creating a timer for the stack inserters, or tell people to check it out in the inserters masterclass.

Super interesting concept, I am definitely going to try a train-to-train megabase!

Now we can make our bases HUGE!
I'd really like to see a Trains Depot to outpost and or smelting column etc... with circuit setups, no mods...
Very interesting masterclass. Maybe now I'll better understand what's going on in the twich streams!
I have been waiting
Then you clock your output inserters so they only swing when the machine has a full inserter stack size
SCREAMING FOR MORE FACTORIO

you can also use a splitter, just a bit slower than the car but way faster than the underground belt, these options will make your build way more tile-able,
the car cant be placed by drones but the splitter can
You cannot put cars in blueprints and cars are hottible for UPS, so it would defeat the entire point of making UPS effective builds

Great Design
this is mudits design

I almost dont understand anything about factorio my brain is on fire rn
At this point, shouldn't you use clocked inserters between some chest to ensure they only move with a full stack?
potentially, but I want to build a big base and then see how much improvement that actually gives. Circuit states can easily eat more calculations than it saves by clocking
@@Nilaus It's a pretty significant savings. :)
Thank you!
Great Tutorial.
cant you use cars as a 2x2 chest??, that solves the red inserter bottleneck
Is it worthwhile to modify the inventory size/filters of the wagons to adjust buffer sizes?
Almost ready for No Boxes No Belts No Bots challenge ;)
Yay finnaly more factorio on youttube agian :)
@Nilaus, why have you decided to use the undergrounds to bridge the odd-even issue? Couldn't you place down two belts on the same side instead of loading on the "wrong" side and transporting it back underground?
What's the advantage of undergrounds in this case?
fewer entities yet still enough to do what needed
For speed you yes, but a splitter is almost twice as fast
Can someone tell my, why some train stops do appear in violet text color and other have white text color?
FACTORIO!
So why not use cars as glorified chests? They can fix the even un-even distance thing pretty easily.
Haha was testing and my dumb brain went this is perfect how could they not.... wait a minute, I can’t blueprint cars?! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
- No blueprinting cars
- Cars are always active i.e. they are a huge UPS sink so it defeats the entire purpose of the build
- It looks horrible
Factorio the only game that u will still enjoy if u enable god mode.
Yes wow
wow
algorithm deity, accept my comment as tribute
but i like belts...
doesn't work... no power...ggs :D:D
blueprints include power poles ;)
just use tanks lol
Did you ever do the "next step" in train circuit network? I cannot find the video. I've watched ep 28
