    Even if I was in the market for one, like a lot of these you show, I wouldn't touch it with 'that proverbial ten-foot pole'. Thanks for sharing this.
    You remind me of someone I once knew, he worked in design engineering, we had bought a brand new 1981 Pontiac Phoenix from the dealership, we happen to stop by a local Big Boy restaurant, and he was there too. We chatted a little and mentioned our new car and pointed it out from the inside of that building. The first words out of his mouth were, that vehicle has been in an accident. We insisted it was new, after we went outside for a closer look, he proceeded to show us every detail to back up his statement, and there was plenty of details he pointed out. Us not knowing what to look for was the suckers that made that mistake, so I appreciate you sharing your knowledge in hopes of preventing others of making that mistake, or at least having the information ahead of time so they fully know what they are getting into.

    The only way you could fix this truck (legally) would be to buy a flood parts truck with a certificate of destruction really cheap and use all the parts on this one. But there's still the question of how good the engine and transmission are, but it was listed as run and drive, so who knows.

    • @bobmazzi7435
      @bobmazzi7435 2 месяца назад +1

      A flood car to fix with the electrics and interior from this would make sense. And if it ingested water, then a "good"? drivetrain would be a big plus.

      Flooded cars from Florida with destruction title don't sell cheap. Florida makes a great deal: cuts all US and Canada people from these "destruction cars" so other countries without salvage laws lobbied by dealers can buy them, fix them and drive them. So, there is a market price made by normal countries

    I think it would be interesting to hear the back story on some of these vehicles, I.E. what happened leading up to and in the accident. Probably impossible to get unless maybe if you were a LEO, but even then, it would be illegal to share. The VIN swapping theory is a good one. Certainly plausible. You said they weren't your friends which made me wonder if they ever contacted you with a cease-and-desist order. I don't recall you ever mentioning that.

    The clean title is probably what makes them think it’s worth more.
    For a fast cheap full repair the purchaser need only obtain an identical vehicle without the clear title and do some swapping.
    This cheap type of repair tends to make insurance rates skyrocket and was once the reason why total wrecks with no hope of repair or even being parts vehicles would fetch high prices. Salvage titles and the inspections that go with them were supposed to end this type of repair.

    I think you hit it square on the head. That VIN tag will end up on a stolen truck and since it has a clean title, there will be no inspection to rebuild it so no one will check the VIN on the parts to make sure it matches the VIN on the truck. That's where your scan tool will really come in handy. Check the VIN on the modules and compare it to the VIN tag and title. If they don't match, walk away. Stolen vehicle for sure.

    I bet the wheels and rims are takeoffs unless there was scuffing you didn't focus on. I'd also check them for wobble...

It's one thing to sell a car with the buyer's full knowledge that it's damaged, it's another to cover up a deployed airbag with a piece of upholstered cardboard.

If no insurance is involved, then no blemishes on the title. It definitely seems like you are right on the VIN swap or parts swap from a stolen vehicle. It's an easy way for a thief to make some money.

    • @mycowboyways915
      @mycowboyways915 2 месяца назад

      Auto auctions hide behind the "we are just the auctioneers, we are not the owners of the vehicle being sold" thing. Never buy an auction vehicle without seeing it in person. Just the factory LED taillight on that pickup wholesales at over $1500 bucks from a dealership.

    • @bobroberts2371
      @bobroberts2371 2 месяца назад

      @@mycowboyways915 said " Auto auctions hide behind the "we are just the auctioneers, we are not the owners of the vehicle being sold" thing. "
      So you are expecting a salvage auction to do a 200 point inspection and allow the buyer to cancel the purchase / get a refund if they find something wrong? THIS IS A SALVAGE AUCTION.
      The solution would be a federal law PROHIBITING non automotive business / civilians from buying ANY salvage vehicle. Would you back such a plan? Some states already prohibit sales to non automotive people. An even better solution would be to do what Australia does. Even minor crashes result in a statutory write off where the car can NEVER be rebuilt.
      That being said, dealer auctions for regular cars DO have an arbitration clause if the buyer finds a fault in a day or two. This is because the cars are being sold as operable and an entirely different environment.

    • @mycowboyways915
      @mycowboyways915 2 месяца назад

      I purchase rebuilder vehicles through Copart. Most states already prohibit people without a dealers license from purchasing salvage vehicles. Car dealers already know what they are buying. If you have ever bid online through Copart you are likely aware that many of these vehicles are going overseas and to South America. Scott is just pointing out sellers that are really good at doctoring up vehicles that really should be parted out and not rebuilt. If you are an auction buyer, I advise viewing the vehicle in person before the auction. Something simple like headlights, taillight's and a little trim can cost you thousands. Airbags and crash sensors, another 2-4 thousand. I kind of have a policy. If it has body damage, it's gotta run. If it has engine damage, it's got to have a pretty damage free body. Otherwise, you should just go find a good trade in online from someone local. Auctioneers are just that. They sell stuff. It's up to the buyer to know what they are buying and know if they have the skills or monetary means to repair the vehicle.

    Yes, a clear title VIN is probably worth a fair amount to the right illicit capitalists. My question is this: On a '22 F150 how many VIN plates are there on the vehicle, how practical is it to swap everything, is the VIN stamped into the frame... Have manufacturers created ways that even if this is done it can still be detected? What about the VIN match in the computer system?

    How could anyone tell if the VIN's are swapped on a vehicle?

      On a modern vehicle there are lots of ways. As some unsuspecting buyer will find out in 4 or 5 years when the dealer orders parts based on the vin and they don't match. Then they will check and the current "owner" will get their car confiscated.
