Just to be clear, I'm saying the NEWS had mentioned the Kitty Genovese story when talking about Daniel Penny. I'm not saying this case is the same exact situation or who is right or wrong in that matter.

He was given 3 squares and a cot on the taxpayers dime for decades, while her family probably struggled day after day living with the knowledge that her last few minutes on this earth were absolutely terrifying.

The last time l saw Kitty, she had just bought a new car. She took me and her little brother Frank for a ride. She was murdered just a few weeks later....

Nobody at the site did anything. I started yelling for the police and Thank goodness. a group of young men caught him and pulverised him
blood and broken teeth, then handcuffed with no medical help. I felt good about helping to bring this thug to justice.

I'm old enough to remember the 1975 made-for-TV movie loosely based on this event. I was only 12 then so obviously the movie made an impression. The movie was heavily promoted at the time and had an excellent, well known cast, including 12-year-old Helen Hunt in a minor role. I just checked and it's called "Death Scream" and the entire movie is available on youtube. Wiki has an article about the film. In 1975 it was widely believed that the murder had many, many witnesses (and the promos for the TV movie featured this) but, as you mention, that's no longer believed to be true in the case of the actual murder.

My parents were the hide your head in a hole type of people. I hated it. I was always the take action type of person.
When I was in high school in the 80's a woman was being attacked at the end of our driveway. I threw on the light to get dressed to help her, my mother turned the light off. My parents blocked me from leaving my room and refused to call the police because "someone else would". Luckily someone else did, but no matter how scared I am I refuse to turn a blind eye.

I remember when 911 came out in California. It was in the 80s. It was highly publicized On TV, Radio, Papers, and billboards. We used to dial 0 for the operator and the operator would connect us the police, fire, ambulance, whatever we needed. You could ask the operator the time, the nearest pizza place, the current weather, etc. The operator could connect you to a long distance operator if you needed to call someone out of state. It cost alot so long distance calls were always rushed.
Dialing 0 for the operator was still in use after 911 was in effect. But the opertaor was only used for directory assistance or long distance calls. No emergency calls like before and no time, weather, or extras.
Tragic story about this lady. I wonder why that man targeted her?

Being lifelong Bronx resident and a NYC Police Captain, this was a famous case. I did a paper on this in grad school. There was some discrepancy about the number 37. In revisionist history they try to claim the 37 number is way off, but its best to leave police work to the police, and not to newspaper reporters looking to revise history. The problem is the Chief of Detectives had lunch with a NY Times reporter and told him the famous 37. Forgetting that the chief is a cop. A witness can be an eyewitness and ear witness. I forget the breakdown but between those who saw it and those who heard it, the number adds up to 37.
Unfortunately there were conspiracies at the time since Kitty was gay, not accepted at the time. Great video.

Great public interest story! This was a super hard lesson for many when this terrible act occurred nearly 60 years ago!! To be fair.....or to give a great story on the polar opposite case where 911 service was botched up and presumably tightened up, you need to report on the equally sad and violent case of Denise Amber Lee in Sarasota/Port Charlotte County Florida. We were living right there at this time in 2008 and this true story crime is as interesting as it is sad and a tough lesson!! The sheriff father of this poor woman pushed for 911 reform immediately afterwards. Jim C.

It’s saddening to now learn that a woman had to gravely suffer and lose her life to essentially save the lives of others. Why is change always instated after an incident, which usually results in someone’s death? Shouldn’t solutions be created to avoid these crimes from happening in the first place!???

What happened on the Subway was far beyond what the media is making it out to be. You got a 40+ times arrested homeless dude who was once charged for pushing a woman onto the train tracks, go into a carriage and pretty much yell and demand money or food, cause he no longer cared if he was going to jail or not anymore or even if he died, and you all wanna blame the guy who actually made sure no one else go hurt when he and two others pinned him down and were still having issues doing so. If anyone is guilty here its the NY legal system that let this guy go 40+ times, cause given his history, it was only a matter of time before he killed someone. But because he is black and the man who inadvertently ended his life is white, you all wanna suck up once more cause you are afraid of another "peaceful protest" taking place. Your country is screwed folks. Stay away from the rest of the world least you infect it with whatever it is infecting your brains.

While there was no question that the attack occurred, and that some neighbors ignored cries for help, the portrayal of 38 witnesses as fully aware and unresponsive was erroneous. The article grossly exaggerated the number of witnesses and what they had perceived. None saw the attack in its entirety. Only a few had glimpsed parts of it, or recognized the cries for help. Many thought they had heard lovers or drunks quarreling. There were two attacks, not three. And afterward, two people did call the police. A 70-year-old woman ventured out and cradled the dying victim in her arms until they arrived. Ms. Genovese died on the way to a hospital.
But the account of 38 witnesses heartlessly ignoring a murderous attack was widely disseminated and took on a life of its own, shocking the national conscience and starting an avalanche of academic studies, investigations, films, books, even a theatrical production and a musical. The soul-searching went on for decades, long after the original errors were debunked, evolving into more parable than fact but continuing to reinforce images of urban Americans as too callous or fearful to call for help, even with a life at stake.
Psychologists and criminologists called the reluctance of witnesses to involve themselves the “bystander effect,” or the “Kitty Genovese syndrome.” Studies discerned a “diffusion of responsibility,” finding that people in a crowd were less likely to step forward and help a victim. Some communities organized neighborhood-watch patrols. In New York, an emergency call to the police was simplified later in 1964 - from dialing “O” for operator or a precinct or a borough headquarters, to a central police number. The unified 911 system was not established until 1968.

It's too bad there wasn't a Daniel Penny in the crowd of people who stood around and one videotaped a man being beaten to death in a park, in broad daylight, in front of his 2 to 3 yr old baby who can be heard crying 'daddy' while he's being beaten to death.
But nowadays if you stop a criminal, you become the criminal in this upside-down, backwards world.

When I was in my early 20’s and enjoying the night life in RVA I witnessed a stabbing. I ran in the bar and jumped behind the counter and grabbed a “clean” towel. Handed it to someone else to put pressure on the wound because I couldn’t deal with “blood”. The college student later died and it was all over a girl. 🤯

Great Video! Thank you! ( Note : There is a Documentary following Kitty G.'s Brother who was High School age at the time of his Sister's Murder. He also believed 'The New York Times' story on what had happened and that sorrow concerning no one caring or helping her screams for help!)( However it was disproven by her Brother, though it took him 50 years to face his deepest sorrow to look into it!)( Her Brother found out in fact that many had called the Police ; as the Brother researched the MicroFish Police Phone Records 50 years later!)( It turned out she had never been sexually assaulted, as a neighbor had ran down towards the screaming of what she thought might be her neighbor friend Kitty G.!)( The Brother did indeed find out 50 years later , as far as apathy of not helping his Sister was mostly a concocted lie to sell Newspapers.)( The Documentary following her Brother on this investigation can be watched for example, via the U.S.Public Library System InterLibrary Loan System.)( Her sad Death, was not in Vain! The 911 System did get started, even though it took until over 45 years to get most American Cities to have it.)(&)( Psychology/ Psychiatry Classes have for years taught the dangers of Apathy, helping the World to be more aware ,and active in intervening to stop or curtail more, things wrong around them in their environment ,surroundings, society! )

I love how your video has a greater historical context. In this case, it indirectly created 9-1-1. Just like how Amber Alert was created after a tragedy, history would not repeat itself again. Hope the poor woman found peace.
