I love this song. Both by Mike or Tom and Ben/Ralph here. The Libera are a trained choir and always perform live in their concerts. Their problem is in age. So even though they don't sound the best to us, they sing with all their heart. That's their advantage. So I love their incredibly dedicated performance. Thanks to all who have worked. Good work 🥰😊❤💝
I think Ralph Skan was amazing in this video. He is doing the very difficult high notes with his gorgeous voice. Check him out when he is a lot older in the Song of Life video. Ben Phillip was Ok until the very end when his voice cracked a little. Ben is a fantastic singer, check him out in Time and Lacrymosa (his first solo). Remember this is being performed live. It is even harder because there is only 9 of them instead of the usual 30. Libera boys are outstanding performers. Go to a concert. You will never be the same.

I see it more as changing of the guard -- it was one of Ralph's first solos, I think. In my opinion, they've done this sort of thing before, like Josh passing the torch to Ben in "Time".
The purpose of concerts is to give pleasure. Peoples comments reflect the plethora of competitions that appeal not so much to the beauty of the music but to the winner takes all mentality. Might as well be watching a boxing match. You don’t have to be the “best” to bring joy to people.
Understandable in a live concert with so few back- ups. Plus the song is a bit difficult piece for live singing, maybe.. that's why I prefer to listen to Michael's cover version. A hauntingly beautiful music that introduced me to the Libera treaures. Far Away and Michael H. will always be my Libera memory..
This song is hard to perform live, especially at this point the 2 soloists are nearing their voice break age. But I always loved Ben P's and Ralph's high notes.
You can definitely hear Ben's voice beginning to change, and making it difficult for him to hold those notes...pesky hormones..they ruin so much for young people...
Ok, read through the whole comment before you yell. This the worst performance I have heard from Libera. Both Soloists, Ben and Ralph, struggled. I’m not positive but it looked as though the high soprano was dubbed, I understand it’s a small tour group, and when you can fill a hand with mistakes in the first minute and a half, that would actually have been a smart move. That being said, this is the Worst I have heard, but it was STILL BEAUTIFUL. I am a performing musician, I know from experience they can list mistakes we haven’t heard. But they still managed to show off there amazing talent and they were such a privilege to work with. I was a part of Libera for a summer, before I was transferred to Scotland. That was some years ago, Ben was still Mini Ben, and, Josh Madine, and Tom Cully, were handling the majority of the solos. That was a fun summer, I never got to tour, but had a great experience all the same.
I can't say you're wrong, it is a bit shaky at times. It's not the worst I've seen though - that would be the raw footage from the Kennedy Center. Having said that, you are right, it is still beautiful. Every soloist, with the exception of M. Horncastle, has struggled with this song when doing it live, so I rather expect little. I see this video as the passing of the torch from Ben's generation (he could barely get some of the high notes) to Ralph's generation (he was new at soloing, and obviously nervous. I've also noticed that often, especially in "Far Away", the soloist always seems to relax a little and gain more confidence when the backing vocals come in. Thank for the comment!
TygrHawk -Tom definitely struggled through the solo in Love And Mercy, but I think the majority of the issue was mic balance. Also they were working with a strange back up choir. I would call a tie, just Libera- this one, Libera with back up - Kennedy Centre. Still an amazing choir and as always beautiful to hear. Thanks for your thoughts and insight!
P.S. I’ve turned off recordings of other Top choirs: Wiener Sängerknaben, Tölzer Knabenchor, American boy choir that were CD mastered because they were worse than this in a recording that they were selling. At least here they have an excuse, jet lag, sore throats, whatever. But for a CD
I'm a lifelong fan of Libera, not a fan of this performance tbh. It's definitely not up to usual Libera standard, but I think it's understandable since all the boys here are super new in their First Treble roles, I think. This cohort was the group of boys leftover when the power cohort (i.e. Tom Cully, Josh, Ed, Liam, etc.) suddenly left and there was a vacuum of experience. Mini Ben wasn't really part of that power cohort, and so when everyone left he had to take over. He was the most experienced boy at the time. Ralph 100% got way better after this performance, though. In this performance it seems like he hasn't developed any breath control yet and is gasping for breath between phrases. And Mini Ben's voice has definitely broken here; he was really struggling to hit those higher notes.
Josh was there, in the back. I definitely noticed Ralph struggled with breath control, and Ben was aging out. I believe this was the last time he sang this live before passing the torch on to the next boy.
Libera made several mistakes with this version of faraway. One was using Ben is voice is not suited for this song. second is not changing the key to match Ralph voice. third they probably should have use Stefan or Jakob

Exactly what I thought when I first discovered Libera, 8 years ago.
PVの方が音質は良いけど、この透き通るような、少年の純粋な声はTVバージョンでも俺の涙腺を破壊してくる。足先まで鳥肌が立ったのは初めて。
