    The best way to learn baserunning instincts is backyard baseball and pick-up games. Do you agree or disagree?

      No in backyard baseball your aggressive af which isn't good for game situations.

    Great video. I’d like a similar one from the defense’s point of view - when catchers should thrown down and when to just let the runners advance, when infielders should hold them on vs play their spot, etc.

    Nice video. great topic. this is a discussion that me (as the 1st base coach), and my third base coach have all the time. He is super aggressive, and I am much more conservative.

    One good time to steal which I've seen overlooked in some of these types of videos is stealing 2nd with 1 out, at least if the runner on 1st is a stealing threat who has a better then even chance of reaching safely. Reason: That steal breaks up the inning ending double play ball (and puts the runner in scoring position). Now the defense, to get out of that inning MUST pitch to 2 hitters, and no longer can get out of the inning on a single pitch. Even more so if there's also a runner on 3rd, as the double play can break up the run since the runner from 3rd won't count if the hitter's out at 1st, for the 3rd out of the inning. By having a good stealer go for 2nd, you eliminate the routine double play to save a run, and now the manufactured run's more readily on the table, as that inning ending double play ball up the middle is now a sac grounder to score the runner at 3rd.

    Wouldn't stealing 2nd with 1 out also be pretty good? No more inning ending double play/force out. I know maybe not as good as with 0 or 2 but still good nonetheless.

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett  3 года назад

      if youre using double play breakups as a justification than youd be stealing all the time

      @@DanBlewett I get what you're saying but I'm just wondering if you think its a bad situation to steal or not. Is it like stealing 3rd with 0 or 2 outs?

    Hey Dan. My son plays 15u ball and runs a 6.7 60. His coach lit him up for stealing second with 2 outs in the last innimg with the team down by 4 runs. I've taught my son to always try to put himself in a situation where he can manufacture runs. The reason he gave my son was that stealing with 2 outs can bother thee batter?? But instead, he would have been ok with him stealing 3rd with 2 outs in the last inning. My sin stole 20 bases across 4 tournaments this season without getting caught. He also has the green light to steal at will. Would appreciate your thoughts as I do not agree with the coach.

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett  Год назад

      What your son did was very poor baserunning. There’s no need to steal because three more runners need to come in behind him. He has to get batted home regardless. Stealing only risks the out and gains the team nothing

    • @jeffreycastro6938

      Thanks Dan. Appreciate the response and feedback. Just to clarify. My son stole 2nd with 1 out and not 2. Not sure if your opinion is different. I just want my son to learn from the experience. The bigger concern is his coach did not treat this as a teaching moment. Thanks again.

    • @DanBlewett

      no, its not different - down that many runs, stealing has no benefit

      Axiom in Baseball.. subject to change but for the LARGE PART..
      Never steal 3rd risking the 1st or 3rd out.

    Another bad time to steal IMO is down pretty big late. So down 8 in 8th, outs are more valuable than runs in games late that aren't close. Seems obvious but you'd be surprised how much I see this at tourneys .

      @DanBlewett  3 года назад +2

      Yeah, 100% - the angle I was taking was a little different, but you're right. Could have been included for sure. I may do a video on when it's important to take the next base vs not

    • @drizzle452
      @drizzle452 2 месяца назад

      Theoretically I totally agree but then again, consider context. I did this recently as a 3rd base coach down 8 in the last inning…not because I thought we could win the game but because I wanted the baserunner to learn how to get a jump on a lefty. Purely developmental fall league 15u.
      But yea, as a general rule, I agree

    The reason you don’t see smart baseball from kids now is Tball has become about winning vs teaching proper game technique. 2-3 kids making all the plays vs utilizing positions

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett  2 года назад

      2 strikes is best, or 0-1 or 1-2 if the pitcher has a pattern of throwing more breaking balls in those counts
