Peter Karrie MUST have read the original novel beforehand, because I've not seen an actor grasp Erik's character quite as well as he. The nervous, jittery, almost spidery movements. The explosive mood swings and VISIBLY unstable mentality. It's perfect, absolutely perfect.

    • @waynedev1621

I think all the early 'Phantoms' were the Best! I'm not so talking about Voice but the actual overall performance! Mike Crawford! Dave Willetts! Colm Wilkinson! & Peter Karrie! we're all awesome! They all really got under the Skin of 'The Phantom'
One of the Probs with 'Love Never Dies' which I actually still love is that the Phantom becomes 2 Nice! People do change but u still need 2 c his Mood Swings etc! He does have a Screw loose!x

It's funny tho because the original Leroux Erik is my all time favorite thing in the world, and the way Karrie does it is not how I imagine him in the book. For example, in the book, the Persian says when Erik speaks in a certain super calm, level-headed, but weary voice, you know he's really at the end of his rope and about to blow in an extreme way, either good or bad. So I imagine he'd be saying this line in that kind of voice versus the Exorcist growling and screaming of Peter Karrie here lol (which is creepy, I'll give him that). And I don't imagine Erik as twitchy or off the wall. Melodramatic and confusing to others, yes...but there's a method (and humor) to his madness. So, our imaginations/personal interpretations apparently play a big part, here, too! :)

Agreed, I had the pleasure of seeing him on tour and he was an astonishing Phantom, one of my favorites to this day. His MOTN was particularly memorable as well, because "The Phantom" was so clearly an act - as soon as Christine fell, his entire voice changed and he became completely vulnerable and unsteady. Beautiful performance all around.

Phantoms that scared the hell out of me:
    - Dave Willetts
    - Michael Crawford (the one with D'arcy)
    - Jeff Hyslop
    - Ernst Deiter Suttheimer
    - Colm Wilkinson (his silence made it twice scarier lol)
    - Kevin Gray (the one with Pettit)
    - Franc D'Ambrosio
    - Davis Gaines
    - Ethan Freeman
    - Dale Tracy
    - Peter Karrie (he didn't actually look scary, it was as if he doesn't like hurting Christine but he doesn't have any choice because he really wants her...)
    - Paul Stanley
    - Scott Davies (the one with Page)
    - Ian Jon Bourg
    - Michael Nicholson (he actually LAUGHED!)
    - Juan Carlos Barona
    - Ted Keegan
    - Brad Little
    - Thomas Schulze (he whispered on her ear omg)
    - Peter Lockyer
    - Hugh Panaro (the one with Hanson)
    - James Romick (I love how his voice echoed)
    - Tim Martin Gleason (the one with Trista Moldovan)

    - Matthew Cammelle
    - Gary Mauer
    - Saulo Vasconcelos
    - John Cudia (the one with Wills)
    - Anthony Crivello
    - Ramin Karimloo (the one with Harris)
    - Peter Jorde (the one with Bokor)
    - David Shannon (love his "NO!")
    - John Owen-Jones (the one with Beck)
    - Greg Mills

I hate when some of the Christines rush through "I gave my mind blindly". I feel like it ruins the moment because to me that line is one of the most heartbreaking in the whole show, and truly shows the tragedy of the situation.
