dont be too shy to try it though. it helps alot knowing the idea behind the tension and tuning and knowing will only help you become a more rounded tabla player. it took me a couple of tries to get it right, spent about 3 HOURS the first time. very frustrating but it got easier every time to where i can do it about an hour. still not near as fast as a professional but it sounds better every time i do it and learn from it GOOD LUCK!! and thanks for this it gave me alot of shortcuts
I use small nails to nail the head to the tabla. Use them right under the head under the braids. I use about 1/2 to 3/4 inch, making sure that the nail doesn't block the openings for the straps. It'll save you a ton of headache dealing with the head slipping all the time.

Good exercise for the forearms
