I was there for this. I lived in LA, fresh out of high school and worked in the parts dept of Vasek Polak on PCH in Hermosa Beach. I drove a shitload of brand new 911s all over LA. Hung out in the pits for the CanAm main event, camped in the infield. It was like a major rock concert event. My Dad was a Porsche owner since I was too young to know ('56 Speedster, 60 Super 1600) and he took me to Riverside, Willow Springs, rallyes, SCCA events, car shows, NHRA Winter Nat'ls...Southern California was an amazing pace to grow up for motorsports
Whomever uploaded this.... you are a freaking Hero. Jackie and the Legends on the track. Mark being one of the Most Underrated Drivers ever. In WHAT WORLD is Jackie Stewart Interviewing Richard Petty in a Porsche!!!! What good times.
David Pearson is one of the best drivers to ever wheel a car. The Silver Fox was fast in any car he got in. I was fortunate enough to see him race several times. Would love to see the IROC series come back. Thanks for the upload. Brings back memories for an old race car driver and fan like myself.
That's the perfect description of this field. 🏁💨 Fittipaldi ... Allison Johncock ... Pearson McClusky ... Petty Foyt ... Hulme Follmer ... Revson Unser ... Donahue Major League Hitters. Every one of 'em. 👍
I have been waiting for so long to relive this moment. The best IROC year ever, the first. I was 9 years old and already in love with the 911 and reading about lift throttle oversteer. Never owned a 911 yet but I practiced in my BMWs good old-fashioned semi-trailing arms at the limit will definitely mimic The Deal. LOL.
_The Deal_ is right! I didn't get bit by the racing bug until the late 1970s. After that it was on. Along with my high-octane-fuel raged, teenage hormones, I took my 1975 Fiat X-1/9 on a local winding road that had a couple of hairpins and blasted away (uphill with a mild motor = less chance of getting into trouble real fast.. lol). Good times. The Deal.
@@maxmulsanne7054 Hahaha I swapped the first MR2 in undergrad, 1985 :) Ham-fisted foolery got my "knowwhere" as in I know not to do that anywhere again.
Jackie Stewart did a lot of commentating for ABC back then. He used to do a bunch of NASCAR races too. Stewart just loved racing. He didn't discriminate.
Stock car drivers figuring out how to race a German Rollerskate around a fast and open road course..!! I wish Riverside was still there and open for racing......EPIC races
He still is one of the Greats. Clark, Villeneuve and Senna never drove in the rain _AND_ fog - *Nürburgring 1968.* A shout-out should be mentioned for *Pedro Rodriquez* too, since rain at the Nürburgring & Zandvoort that year gave him a chance to prove his skills in that cruddy BRM he was stuck with.
Its like having Lewis Hamilton Kimi Raikkonen and Charles Leclerc from F1 (Fittipaldi,Hulme, and Revson) Newgarden. Rossi, Pagenauld and Will Power from Indycar (Unser, McCluskey, Johncock, Foyt) Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and say Truex (Petty. Allison, Pearson) then Montoya and say Ricky Taylor from Spotyscars (Donohue, Follmer) Thats a line up!
I think weight transfer caught Emmo. He jammed on the brakes, weight transferred to the front, the rears got light, no traction for braking, around he goes! Loved how Pearson let him crash out of the way and Peason calmly motors off into 2nd place. The Silver Fox indeed.
Frustrating more like... I hope that community that complained about the _"noise"_ was plagued with late-night crime, miscellaneous gunfire (think 4th of July & New Years) and traffic noise ever since 1989.
I bet the NASCAR drivers were having more fun than the rest because of how differently the 911s drive and handle compared to their usual Torinos, Chargers, Road Runners, etc. Also, maybe this is just me but I was thinking that since NASCAR drivers are more used to making contact with one another, I assume they'd be more likely to push their respective cars just a wee bit more than the F1, Indy, or even sportscar drivers who are more disciplined and reserved with overtaking rivals.
Perhaps more so in the 1960s when ABC was a decent broadcast. He's here on YT coverage of the 1969 Le Mans race. Did some early Indianapolis 500 fill-ins too.
He worked for nbc & CBS sports. They covered nascar races. Keith Jackson is the voice of Dale Earnhardts famous "pass in the grass" that really wasn't a pass. But nevertheless, Keith was the man at Charlotte in 87. I've heard him commentate with Donnie Allison & Jackie for nascar throughout the 80s
I was at an IMSA race at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut about 40 YEARS ago when A.J. ran some puck Italian road racer right over the guardrail at the end of the front straight. One of the funniest things I ever saw !!
Jackie should've asked to borrow a backup car if there was any more available. 🤭 Anyways, it would have been a power move had Emmy saved his car from spinning at Turn 7.
Yeah that was a near nothing right there when they raced him old cars there that I ever looked at it was more interested in the cars like Earnhardt and then drove in has been for them that stuff there wouldn't be much to it
Looking at this again it's a shame some of the film used at various points in history was so shitty. You can find much older video that still looks great. Ughhh...
Real shame that there was not enough money to keep racing with the 911s. Those cars are the perfect tool to determine whether and how skilled a racing driver is. I feel that when they switched to Camaros, it just became a side quest for veteran and up-and-coming oval racers hailing from NASCAR and Indycar racing, hence the transition from a mix of road courses and banked ovals to exclusively running on ovals like Daytona and Charlotte.
I was also there that day i took my hot beach bunny high school girl friend w me a few years later we got married, still in love to this day . The whole day was awesome . Im pretty sure at this race a Mexican guy w a suitcase full of cash bought Mark Donahue's Porsche

Got to see the last pro race at Riverside.
