One of the last symbolism of racism in Woodlawn but the park's sentiments was still felt long after its removal. Hampden around 1974 and then Woodlawn mid 70's - early 80's, were the first locations, I was called the N word. Ironically, I was a kid and it was projected by adult whites. I remember going into the shops in Woodlawn, Alex's Bike shop and the Bakery. Once in the Bakery a White female worker called us the N word as she looked from the back. In Hampden, my uncle rode through the area and as we stopped at a light, a white group gathering and started spitting, yelling the N word and shaking the car. My sibling and I were terrified. We were all under 8 at the time so you can imagine. Alex and his staff at the bike shop wasn't welcoming either, his staff would often make accusations that our bike were stolen. Police would stop us and check our serial numbers. Ironically, it's been documented that Alex, the owner of the bike shop has been charged with the same crime he accused us of.

@@injun6896I grew up in Baltimore City but had a friend in Woodlawn that I visited on the weekend. There weren't many black kids in his class but I often asked him what it was like being the only black kid in class. He would hesitate and say it's O.k! But, I can see by his expression that he wasn't happy. Fortunately, it was a good school and he got a good education, I'm glad I went to school in the city.

I live in Woodlawn and pass this Park everyday going to work and coming Home. I remember in the early 70’s when I was around 5 yrs old, my Older Brother bought me to the Amusement Park.
