To make it sound heavier, I do the rhythm with the strumming going down. Maybe there is not much difference but I learned it like this instead of doing it with alternate pick, still it sounds very good and it helps me to see if I learned a wrong section in the execution of the song. 
I wonder why if both play same riff do they need different tunings. I get standard e and another say has a open g slide tuning. All i can think of is that maybe drop d might sound deeper in a mix. Brilliant song though so it works. 👌

The 12 in the stands for the pitch you have to reach thanks to the harmonics technique so Pinch Harmonics (PH in the tab) or Artificial Harmonics (AH)
