Thank you for the video. My speak and read has a problem with the keypad and I was wondering how to open it (the keypad) without distroying it. I never thought of finding this instruction. Great Repair!and good luck for the next ones...
That's awesome so glad to help. My name is Roger BTW. To anyone who knows, I'm not writing my own comments! So good to hear my vid has been useful. Thanks for feeding back
🤣same surname!I live in germany. Here a speak and spell/read/math is hard to find.I wanted to get one in my childhood because of the film "ET" I don't think you live in germany too?!You have an interesting channel. Greetings Roger H
Hi Roger glad you are enjoying the channel. You are correct I am not from Germany I live in the UK. I have only visited Germany one time (Friedrichshafen and Ravensburg) but it was very beautiful. Thanks again for your comments Roger. Roger
Must admit I didn't hold out much hope for you repairing this one, well done! Brilliant stuff, thanks for uploading. Your videos are really relaxing and satisfying, keep it up my friend.
Brilliant fault finding and repair. A thoroughly enjoyable well edited video! Just subscribed and looking forward to going through the rest of your videos :-)
That's brilliant Vince thanks so much! I love your content and have been a subscriber to your channel for ages. You are some of the reason I started doing this. I wish I had your patience! Thanks so much for your comments, I'm flattered.
Just bought one for my son. It was supposed to work, but the screen is a little wonky. I'd love to buy this one if you were selling. Regardless, great repair and great vid!
Hi Derick, unfortunately I just do this as a hobby and don't have one for sale. Perhaps you could open it up and straighten out the circuit board, that's it advice, just what I might do.
This has to be a named phenomenon... looking for the more complicated fix, before the simpler one. All engineers have done it, myself included. Safe to say your not an idiot, but it was funny. ;)
Haha yes you are right, it probably has a name. I have a couple of vids like that and probably a few more to come. The astro wars try to fix is a classic example
This game along with Speak & Spell remind me of last day of term at Primary school and you could take games into class to play. You always had the rich kid who you would make a bee line to so you could play these :)
Yeah I wanted a speak and spell like mad, but no matter how bad my spelling was (and still is) I never convinced Santa i should get one. That's some of why I started this, so I could have (at least for a short while) those things I once craved.
Interesting. We looked at speak and spell for the kids but when we tried one in the shop, it wasnt very clearly spoken, more like a ventrilloquist (G and B confusion) so it seemed a bit pointless to buy one. I suppose newer versions may have been more clearly spoken. Im always amazed at how little is inside these special machines once the coloured plastic case is removed compared with how much they were sold for .
I remember seeing them as a kid and they were a LOT of money. My spelling was (and is) awful but I still couldn't persuade my parents to buy me one, even as an Xmas gift. I think the tech was very advanced for the time. I read that they used the worlds biggest commercial ROM chips and that the original recording had to processed significantly to accomodate the bit rate including removing some words that just didn't sound right. You are right about the plastic sizes. I've seen several different versions of this and the earlier versions had much larger PCBs in them. Anyway thanks so much for your comments. Glad you enjoyed the video
My Speak n Spell is working on all keys but the keyboard chip appears to be faulty. It repeats columns suggesting a stuck bit. Measuring voltages shows one pin has the wrong voltage, lower than the others. This makes the column count like 0, 2, 2, 4, 4, 6, 6, 8 instead of 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. Despite that the games all play but I can’t type some letters. It’s missing the battery cover and it had the ET cartridge which is working fine.
Hi, I agree it does sound like a keyboard driver error. I didn't really dive into the schematic as I got lucky and spotted the keypad fault. I had a similar kind of failure in the Casio VL Tone that I repaired. I ended up having to change the chip in that with one from a similar keyboard. Thanks for taking the time to comment. The speak and spell is a fun game, let me know if you get it fixed.
I’ll have to find a new/NOS chip then. Looks like the failure in the chip is also loading the bus as some keys cause random segments to light and sometimes crash the CPU.
I just found an old Speak and Math in our basement. Does not power on with new batteries. After seeing what it took you to effect a repair I will open the box but doubt I can do what you did, given my lack of tools.
Hi Lawrence. It might be easier than you think. I think if I had just removed the tape may have seen the wear on the ribbon cable without removing they keypad. Let me know how it goes and thanks for your comments.
Nice little repair, shame some of these games turned really cheap with moulded plastic clips and melted location pins instead of small screws, usually they break trying to get inside but you managed to get away it👍
Hi Dave. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I know my parents couldn't afford to buy me anything like that. I suppose TI had to cut corners where they could, but I agree with you. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks Again!
Thanks so much for your comment. You are quite correct, this one is from the UK. Interesting info about the US model. Thanks. Hope you enjoyed the video.
I know this comment is several years after the video, but wanted to say thanks. Definitely helped me fix one I bought on Ebay. Thanks!
Hi Ben, I welcome comments any time. And really appreciate you feeding back. Thanks so much for your kind words. So glad I could help.

This looks European. In the US of A, it's called Speak & Math, not Maths. Ours also has 2 screws at the bottom and the 4 clips at the top.
