- If a man has excellent skills of Iaido, the enemy wouldn’t fight against him, leading to the victory of him without drawing the sword.
Joined a tour to experience and understand Iaido, in which I actually cut a rolled tatami mat using a REAL KATANA.
The very original program of Iaido in Murayama city, Yamagata.

I did not know that there was a birthplace of Iaido right next to my home town. I should take a weekly lesson to be prepared for that very day.
Psh... while you've been studying the blade, Chris has been sampling different 7-11 foods. You're in for a battle.
Iaido is great! I found a sensei in Colorado USA to do it and I've been hooked for 2 years on Toyama and Muso shinden ryu. Very rewarding training! Thanks for this video~
The key is 70% left hand and 30% right hand. Make sure you are putting the saya on the sword, don't put the sword in the saya~
@@alexjay8257 Chris is obviously building a layer of fat that is too thick for Ryotaro to cut through.
Iaido is purely an Edo era art, when there were no battles, or even duels and samurai no longer were warriors. The only time and place, where it actually made *_any_* sense, to spend any notable time, training something like it, as the only time you might use your sword, would be in surprise attacks. At any other time, and any other place, it would be an extremely rare thing, not worth spending much time preparing for. There are brief mentions of attacks/defences with the sword, from its scabbard, from other times and places, but no more than that. (with various other kinds of swords. It's far from unique to the katana)
Uh oh.....I don't like where this is going. Is the final battle between you and Chris fast approaching?

Chris Broad: Barer of the title, "Dave in Japan"
The man, the myth, the legend. Training to face off against a certain British guy... not long and Abroad in Japan will be taken over
While Chris is editing youtube videos.. Ryotaro studies the blade...
While Chris is babbling with Pete on their podcast... Ryotaro is honing his inner strenght...
He's grown so confident that he isn't even training in secret anymore on how to kill Chris ;-)
But awesome video. You are the best !
Ryotaro looked waay to happy when he said that you can actually kill someone with that sword
Ryotaro's alive!! I love how proud he looks when he sheaths the sword successfully haha
They call him the 90-Minute Samurai.
Keep up the good work!
Yes Ryotaro!!! I studied this many years ago, not for long unfortunately!
I learned a lot of the moves whereby you were on your knees.
It always seemed to me that Iaido was a defensive style which I liked as it was never attacks as such always counterstrikes!!! The embodiment of self defense.
Anyway all that aside this further proves you clearly are the real James Bond.
P.S you did great we all start somewhere 🙏🏻👊🏻
I used to study Iaido as well a couple of years ago, still have all of my gear, I hope I'll have the time to go back to it someday, it was a lot of fun.
@@Dextar300 I feel the same, despite not being able to carry swords around in this day and age there is a certain discipline and aura around the lifestyle of traditional martial artists. Almost like it brings us closer to our ancestral roots. When times were much more simple in some ways, yet chaotic in others.
It's almost the art of grounding the body and mind so that instinct and reaction just happen as opposed to getting lost in our thoughts and anxieties! 🙏🏻👊🏻
4:05 This kata is called "Ippon-me mae". It is the first out of 12 standardized iaido katas. Mae is a sitting kata. The scenario behind this kata is, that both, you and your enemy are sitting in seiza in front of each other. Suddenly your enemy tries to draw his sword. The first strike you do is a horizontal strike which cuts the eyes of your enemy. The second, vertical strike, is the finishing strike. After that you do a chiburi to clean your sword from the blood of the enemy. Last but not least you do a noto, which means putting your sword back into the saya (sheath).
I am a western iaido student =D
@J G drinking tea an that idk
@J G at the moment you sitting there you do not know that it is an enemy, but it is also someone you do not trust (that is why you are holding your swords close to you). For example you are invited to negotiate with another clan and they decide to betray you. Actually 4 out of the 12 katas are sitting katas. For example the 3rd kata (Sanbon me Ukenagashi) has a similar background with the difference that your enemy is on your left =)
@J G Tables tall enough to stand around weren't really a thing in Japan in those times.
@J G Standing in a field or forest or whatever around a rock isn't really a place for negotiations, is it? You don't go into every negotiation with the plan for it to end in murder.
But anyway, the iaido kata are full of plotholes, if you take them apart in detail there are many things that don't add up. e.g. why do you lower a knee to the ground while sheathing the sword when you started a kata in a sitting position, and never do it if it starts in a standing position?
I had many discussions about this topic, even with grand masters (7th dan), and nobody could give an answer that really adds up. Basically iaido kata are forms to train your body, your mind and your skills with the sword, not forms that would hold true without alteration in combat. They are just forms to "explore" a possible scenario, how realistic it is, is an entirely different story.
For example there is an advanced kata that assumes you are walking side to side with 2 enemies, but they don't know anything that you are not their friend. Then suddenly you make a step back and cut them down from behind.
@@Naryoril the reason why not everything of them is making scene is because the 12 standardized katas are a combination from different schools. Obviously each school has their own fighting techniques and at the beginning of iaido the iaido federation had to find a away to evaluate the performance. They took similarities and formed the 12 standardized katas which are today the foundation of iaido. You can still learn the traditional way of the katas but they are not allowed at official tournements and (tho I am not entirely sure) dan exams. Things which can differentiate are e.g. noto or the etiquette. And speaking seemingly pointless actions, in the 3rd kata you have to hold the blade of your sword to your knee in a strange angle. This seems very useless (?) but in the past the samurai used this move to wipe of the blood from the blade with their hakama. Iaido is just a representation of the past and this wiping actions got cut off =)
The one dislike is Chris scared for his life
Ryotaro usually jokes about being a ninja, but now he shows us he's actually a samurai.
What's better than waking up to a new Ryotaro video, let alone samurai training

This is simply Ryotaro building an arsenal of Chris killing techniques. Love it!
Ah, the great Risottaro: International Man of Mystery.
Great now he is also doing assassins training preparing even more to end Chris.
Soon Chris and Ryotaro will make a Samurai champloo live action movie but about Ryotaros Quest to slay Chris.
Now this is something I really will want to try when I come to Japan. I've been interested in Iaido since I was young, so to come and try this would be a dream come true.
Had no fucking clue you had a channel. But now i will watch all of your videos.
Amazing to see you covering some of the Japanese martial arts Ryotaro! Iaido retains some of the most enlightening aspects of Japanese culture; it definitely deserve the coverage. I'm sure it will help to keep the art alive as well.
Keep up the great work.
Iaido is severely underrated, I've been in love with iaido since I found out about it ~6-7 years ago.
Iaido is however very rare in my country and there is unfortunately no place to train it where I live. :(
Same here but there are some in murica.
Great video, i think this style of video suits you very well. Lighthearted yet sincere on the topic of Japan and Japanese culture from a Japanese guy. Leave the awkward humor to the British guy!
I trained battodo for 3 years here in Poland. I still have beautiful mozoto with dragonfly. Beautiful martial art.
That's really cool... As someone who did Kendo for a good 7 years or so (before I had 6 of my vertebrae crushed in a car crash 15 years ago) an Iaido day like this - in Japan - would be cool. And to do Tameshi-giri with a 'real' Katana.... woah, cool!
I was an Iaidoka many years ago. I never used a live blade, as they are very rare in Canada. I graduated to a practice Iaito, a dull, full weight Katana so I didn't have to worry about slicing my self...or others. Ryotaro san, you have inspired me to make a pilgrimage here. Watching you handle that Katana brought me to tears of joy. Muraiyama and Fujiyama are now my list. No guarantees I won't cry tears of joy before and after each of those, hahaha. Otsukaresama.
That's cool. I haven't been able to do iaido for a long time now , but it's really refreshing. Iaido is something everyone with an interest in japanese swords should try. I just wish the common trope in media wasn't to constantly sheathe your sword after every strike. The idea of iaido is to get the sword out and usable as quickly as possible. It doesn't make sense to sheathe until the battle is over (and after a proper chiburi and actually cleaning the sword, of course).
your video is so powerfull, im shaking and crying right now 😭😭😭
Practiced this for 5ish years so I am kind of surprised they handed people dulled practice katana to practice with during this session. Not to mention a sharp one. But I can understand why you'd do it as a business to appeal to people. Normally you start out with years of wood sword training and only purchase a dull one with permission. Never got to that point myself I have to admit. So I am probably just jealous for the most part.
All in all glad you showcased Iaido, which tends to be overshadowed by kendo and aikido in fame.
Yes I agree, A live blade after only 90 mins. Crazy ! I love him to bits but the first time he drew the Iaito it was upside down 😱
As someone who practiced iaido for years and reached 3rd dan, thank you very much to give this sport some much needed exposure. And i didn't know there was an iai shrine, i'm definitely going to visit it once i finally go to the touhoku area.
But i sincerely hope you didn't use that sharp sword for your practice. Usually you wait until 4th or 5th dan (that's 10 to 15 years of practice) until you use a sharp sword for kata.
And sorry to say this, it almost hurt watching you draw and sheath that sword. But that's only to be expected from a beginner and it is why beginners usually start out with wooden swords (and then go on to metal swords that are basically like real ones, but they are not sharpened).
Protip Ryotaro-sama: please use the same microphone when recording a voiceover and video, it sounds a lot smoother when there are no changes in the quality of the sound during a video. Thanks!
This was great! Your best video so far! More videos like these please!
Awesome to see another video ryotaro! Keep it up!
Yay!!! Another Ryotaro video :) keep them coming!!

I’ve been studying iaido for a year and a half now, and I’m loving every second of it. So glad you’ve created a video on it!
Hello Ryotaro just like to say loving your bold new venture of making videos I always loved the episodes of abroad in Japan that you took part in.
You are always so upbeat and optimistic and enjoy having a bit of banter,
I wish you luck with the channel and here is to many awesome adventures and content to come.
Stay safe out there and enjoy yourself :)
When you are concentrated and serious you are almost a different person. Also interesting to see the attention, mimic and movements when you speak to a sensei. Nice video.
Great video again! I love listening to the history, facts and other info about the things you showcase.
Thank you so much for doing this. It will really help boost the profile of an art I love!
Finally! I was hoping to see an Iaido video!
My Father, older sister and I practiced Iaido in our younger years. I hope when its safe to travel I can return to Japan and Visit not only my Sensei's resting places but this Iai shrine as well!
Thank you Ryotaro! This Aussie Owes you a Beer!
That looks really fun! Thanks Ryotaro!
This is your best video so far ! Thanks for the documentary Ryotaro san. Please keep showing us Japan 😁.
Well produced! You've got suprisingly good at producing videos in a short space of time.
Really cool to see you on your own adventures behind the scenes. Really vibrant and funny personality. Love from Denmark
"The width-wise. The sizewise; it's almost like a women's arm!" *laughs maniacally*
Damn Abe-sensei speaks with wisdom!
Such a strong finish to the video. I love this content.
Good that you’re training. I’m pretty sure even Chris is training really hard for the showdown.!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing place!!!
Honestly very!! Awesome.. And to see you excelling rapidly in RUclips!!.
Wow that was a really good video
Keep going with that!
Best episode ever Ryotaro, I love the samurai history of Japan and the swords, and I`m thinking of start training Iaido here in Sweden.
I was wondering where you'd been! Beefing up those assassination skills, I see.
Thanks Ryotaro this video is awesome I have been practicing Owari shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu for the past 30 years love the video
Always have loved and respected the way of the samurai. It isn't just a fighting technique but a complete way of life.

Realy cool video! I train Iaido myself, and seing where it all started, was very cool!
Thanks for the destination spot! Next trip to Japan we are going to head north and will be stopping here for sure!
Good to see you my man...
You know Ryotaro's taking it seriously when he doesn't have a smile on his face. Very cool that you got the chance to experience this, Ryotaro!
Ryotero's serous face with the sword is scary.
I think Chris's days are numbered.
Sweet a new ryotaro video.
Risottoro how nice to find you on youtube, keep at it, greetings from sweden!
This is what I needed today!
Big fan of you for years Ryotaro!
I practice Kenjutsu so it's kinda similar with Iaido.
Sooo adding this to my bucket list...
that was very enjoyable to watch,mu background was in karate and like a lot of martial artists have swords on a stand as a standard!!! ha ha!!! always gets gasps when people see them for the first time!!! great video ryotaro, arigatou!!
Ok. Color me impressed! Didn't expect Ryotaro to cut through the tatami mat in one go!
Thank you for sharing, I was not aware of the existence of this shrine. Hope to see you visit more places with martial traditions such as this!
It was all leading up to this point, Ryotaro. You're assassin training is now complete.
I really hope Ryotaro does more videos like this. Very nice 👍🏻
Thank you for showing how to sheath the Katana.🙏🏼
Awesome to see that you have your own interresting channel mr.R.
Best of wishes for GREAT success!
What´s gonna be the next subject? I personally would love to learn more about ninjas aswell. Japanese gardens etc. Love Japan and it´s sophisticated culture. Thumbs up! Subscribed.
Thanks for this nice adventure. This reminds me the Rurouni Kenshin! I feel that Ryotaro is definitely beyond the beginning level. Also I remembered that Chris has a similar experience with wood sword in the journey across Japan. I hope I can visit this place and the Tokyo Olympics next year.
Great video!
Wow. Awesome
Very nice and informative video especially for me who is practicing iaido in Germany myself
Great video Ryotoro! I especially liked the different colored subtitles for different people. One small criticism I would have is the music is a little loud, it makes it hard to focus on the speaking at some points.
Konnichiwa, Ryotaro! This was marvelous. I'm planning a trip to Japan and I will enrol in this course. Wow. This was AMAZING!!!
Chris will have to call you Ryotaro Sama! 🤣 Please keep content like this coming. You have raised the bar so high above the usual drinking/eating/shopping videos. I love getting to learn/understand/feel traditions of where I travel to. I have no idea how you will top this...👍😍
Ryotaro gives off this James Bond feeling.
Oh yeah...what I most needed
The girl with the pink kimono behind Ryotaro is Kawaii!!! > o
This is definitely going on my to do list, next time I visit Japan. Domo arigato Ryotaro-san!
This was a very good video, arigatou gozaimasu.
Very cool. Definitely will be on my bucket list next time I can go to Japan. Looks like isn't too far from my family in hachinohe
But Chris said you given up!!Love to se you back⚔️
Ryotaro. Interesting. There are so many traditions in Japan to soak up when I'm able to visit. Arigatou. Stay safe
That's so awesome!
This was a great video.
Greetings, Ryotaro. I had no idea that you started a channel, and I am glad that RUclips placed this video in the suggested video list. Thank you for making this video. I have a large and keen interest in Japan and Japanese history, and while I lament the Westernization of the world, I am happy to know that there are Japanese who keep the traditions alive. I fear for the future as the younger generations become more Westernized and I worry that the traditions will be lost. It is my hope that there is a renaissance of sorts in Japan where the younger generations embrace the glorious past. For if the day comes when Japan looks like a Western nation in every aspect, it will be absolutely tragic.
A great video!
So cool, I’d love to do it
This was damn good.
I need this video Gintama is my favorite and i love samurai!
I have trained Iaido for a very short while, though I must say if it were not for my financial situation, I would have continued. And I will resume training once I'm more financially stable. Also thank you Ryotaro-San, love your content and がんばってください。
thank you.
