- It's finally time to drag my machines into the year 2020. I've been holding off on a Catalina install for quite some time, while I got myself organised and update my apps to newer, 64-bit versions. So far everything is working out great! I'm now finally up to date and ready for Big Sur when that hits.

Glad to see that you’ve gotten all your devices and digital life updated and streamlined and thank you for this kind of warning when it comes to the 1.4Ghz Core i5 Mac mini. I actually use that same model (5400rpm spinning hard drive and all) as my home file and media server with it currently running High Sierra, and so I really appreciate that insane slowness warning.
I agree with the other comments about replacing AppZapper with AppCleaner. I've been happily using AppCleaner from FreeMacSoft for years now, and it's a fantastic little utility.

Can confirm adding a PCIe SSD is the way to go on the 2014 mini. I have one as my server and it had virtually ground to a halt. I’d imagine trying to install Big Sur on it would be impossible. So I bought a used 120gb Apple SSD from a similar era MBP, and don’t forget you’ll need to get a connector board too, and it’s transformed it to a usable machine. No more beach balling!
Tom I'm watching this now for the second time. And as I am I'm installing Catalina on my Mac Mini. And yes sir, it's taking a long time! I also have the original spinner in mine, and was thinking about putting an SSD into it instead. We'll see. I watched your other video too (where you installed the SSD in yours), and several other videos on RUclips of other folks doing the same. It kinda looks like more work than I feel like doing... We'll have to see just how slow this thing is, and if it bugs me. Anyhow, I like your videos and I just subscribed. Hope all is well, from the good ol' USA. :-) Joe

You know, seeing this Mac Mini reminds me of something. I used to work for AppleCare, and I can tell you, I have seen quite a lot of these machines that for some reason were as slow as balls, I mean SSDs are clearly better, but Hard drives aren't that bad, there really did feel like there was something wrong with this generation, my guess is, the rest of the specs just let this system down. One even went for repair 3 times, and came back still as slow as molasses. It was just a rubbish machine Reminds me of the kind of performance you get with those Intel Atom Z8350 things from China, it wasn't just the crappy eMMC flash that let them down, even with a real SSD they were very underwhelming, the system bus just wasn't very performant at all

I can confirm that the iMac's from 2017 with a 5400rpm drive are that slow as the Mac Mini...
Yep i had a 2013 imac and when i upgraded to catalina whole system is slow to the point i dont even want to use it
Funny thing is i also have a 2009 imac running mojave through doss dudes patch and original harddrive from 09 and it runs flawless
I remember actually, the 2013 iMacs with the 1TB HDD, they must have had a problem, as when I worked for AppleCare that was another machine I saw loads of where they ran slowly, and then the drive died before it really should have. There were far too many to just be a coincidence, anyways that would have been the drive manufacturer in the wrong there
Indeed. Every Mac that runs Mojave and above MUST have a SSD for practicality.
Crazy that Apple even chose to support Catalina on Systems with 5400RPM HDD's its clearly not something that is good to do by apple Standards.
I bought one of those cheap 2014 Mac Minis and replaced the HD with an SSD. Now I use it as a server and it works great. I don’t need a ton of performance out of it for what I need.
Last year I upgraded a 2009 Macbook (white unibody) to Mojave and initially just used the HDD. It had just 4GB. It was every bit as slow as your Mac Mini. I wasn't sure if it was just deficient of RAM or if it was the lack of an SSD. I replaced the HDD with an SSD first and immediately it ran brilliantly, such that I didn't even upgrade it to 8GB. If I had kept the machine I would have upgraded to 8GB but wound up selling it on to someone whose child needed an Apple laptop with a current OS for school - they reported back to me that it's still running great a year later.
So yeah, starting with Mojave looks like a HDD is NOT a viable option - especially for an older system. Keep in mind the same Macbook ran High Sierra just fine with a hard drive. When you started talking about upgrading the Mini to Catalina with roughly the same config the Macbook had, I knew you were going to be appalled at the performance until you upgrade to an SSD. LOL Happy trails my friend!
I had exactly the same experience with my Mac mini too. Late 2012 2.5GHz i5 with 4 gigs and a hard disk. Fortunately I can upgrade the RAM in mine lol, being stuck with 4GB is a huge hinderence in your case
Alternative to AppZapper can be Appcleaner from FreeMacSoft. I use it all the time.
I have updated to Catalina too this week. I use a virtual machine with Mojave for 4 applications i still need. They are not resources demanding so that’s working good.
Your Time Machine might be in HFS but your OS might now be APFS.

AppCleaner is 64-bit and works great for getting rid of apps, still free too IIRC. My Mac did the same thing with time machine, both when I upgraded my old machine to Catalina and also when I replaced the Mac altogether. I ended up just erasing the backup and resetting the backup disc. The drives that Apple were using towards the end seem to be significantly slower than the norm. The current base iMacs are just as bad, I had to help someone switch to a base model 2017 (they bought it against my recommendation) and it was painfully slow. Same with the stock drive in my late 2014 iMac and the mechanical drives used in the Fusion drives in the 21.5 inch 2015 and up which seem to get worse over time.
Try using appcleaner, Its a great alternative and its free!

My wife and me are running a mid 2012 13" MacBook pro, upgraded to a SSD. I'm also running the same 2014 Mac mini, upgraded to a SSD aswell. Both work really fluid and nice. Windows wouldn't do so. Nice to regard the machines work well.
yeah, we have 2016/2017 iMacs at work and they’re a pain to work with as they have the 5400RPM hdds - we have noticeable speed differences compared to our MacBook Airs, especially when we did our half-yearly reinstall of the OS

Hello IMNC! I have a Late 2014 Mac mini running macOS big sur developer beta (I downloaded the profile online).
Please DO NOT upgrade to Big Sur on a hard drive! It’s outrageously slow. It takes about 2 minutes to boot up plus another good 2 minutes to log in and get the dynamic background loaded. The dynamic background goes blank when the sun starts setting, and the menu bar items are hard to read with a bright background. Apps crash constantly and the whole OS lags. I’m running the upgraded Late 2014.
2.6GHz i5-4278U, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD.

As a retired Apple Canada Systems Engineer I would never have installed Catalina on your mini before upgrading both the drive to an SSD, but especially the RAM! 4GB is just NOT enough with such a slow, dual core processor. Upgrade both and you’ll think it’s an entirely different computer! Good luck!

I honestly hope you won’t have any issues with Catalina. It’s been horrendous for me since beta 1, lots of bugs and performance issues. As always, great video and loving the new camera quality! 👊🏻
It definitely does feel different. I think I should've done a fresh install to really get an idea of things, but I just didn't have time to go through everything. It's not as stable as Mojave unfortunately. I may make another video a little further down the line, doing a fresh install or something. I'll see how bad it gets.

ItsMyNaturalColour a fresh install may help, but it’s just how Catalina is. If you don’t have a really modern machine (2017 at least), it runs like crap. It works well on my Coffee Lake hackintosh, but was rubbish on my Haswell one. I really hope Big Sur will bring a nice improvement in performance, because my 2013 13” MacBook Pro is not usable on Catalina.
Will you try to record and upload in 60fps or 4K? It would look soooo good!
looks like your on the same path as me with a mac mini upgrade to an SSD but also I got a secondary drive kit and slotted both in a little 128gb SSD would do the trick if you don't use it much and the original HDD would become its data storage for downloads and documents by moving them off the main drive.
Had the same experience upgrading to Catalina on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro with a WD black drive in it - thought the drive was dying! No exaggeration it was slower than any of my PowerPC machines. Upgraded to an SSD and now it’s snappy. I think MacOS is just not optimised for mechanical storage anymore.
only just come across this video but to answer your question, I have a late 2015 iMac with a HDD which I got for my 18th birthday (so it has kinda sentimental value to me) but yes they are incredibly slow which I have done two clean installs but obviously you don't feel the benefit for too long

I have the exact Mac Mini as that one. I did a bit of Mac surgery and installed an SSD it is night and day faster. It is now serving as my main desktop as ironically my 2011 27 inch IMAC the hard drive failed.
If you're looking for a replacement for AppZapper check out AppCleaner! It's 64-bit, free and I've used it for years with no issues.

Ah, sorry to hear the pains you're having with your Mac Mini; I had the same problems. Turns out, when you upgrade to macOS Mojave (or even Catalina) It will convert the HDD to APFS. APFS manages data differently compared to HFS+ and that's where the terrible terrible performance occurs.
The fun fact here though is that Mojave works PERFECTLY under HFS+ without issues, but you need to use Carbon Copy Cloner (or Superduper) to do it. That said, Catalina won't work with HFS+ flat out as a startup disk so If you're using a HDD then It isn't worth installing anything higher than Mojave. On an SSD though? Anything's possible.

I'm using the 2.6GHz i5 with 8GB DDR3 (1600MHz) RAM, and a 1TB HDD. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 1TB Samsung 860 Evo soon; do you think that's a good idea?

I have a 2014 Mac Mini, although the mid range 2.6ghz, having swapped the HDD for an SSD.......and now the best computer that I've ever owned. Recommend swapping out the HDD for an SSD.
I fitted an NVMe drive and it completely transformed mine
For slow system, try ensuring that Reduce transparency is checked in System Preferences / Accessibility.
iirc the reason why most mechanical drive mac minis are slow is bc of APFS - since Mojave, spinning rust boot drives have been forced to use it & it just nukes performance.
I believe that Mac takes an m.2 ssd instead of sata
I lost use of my family tree app when I upgraded to Catalina. I was bummed. Didn't realize I wouldn't be able to use it when I upgraded

As a replacement for AppZapper you can use AppCleaner. Works pretty much the same
Catalina is optimized for SSDs, as well as APFS. I don‘t know if the update converts HDDs to APFS as well, but that might have been the reason for the very long update time.
@Timo Neumann anything mojave or after does convert hard drives and fusion drives to apfs
My production Mac will probably never leave Mojave, I’m too scared of losing functionality some plugins, even some that claimed to work just flat out didn’t on my up-to-date MacBook.
God, that Mac mini is horrible... 2014 apple was so bad with macs :( Only recently have they started to get back on track, and obviously the arm transition is a great step.
all Macs sold with hard drives are slow the only fast ones are the ones with ssd
I’ve got the base 2012 Mac mini which had 4Gbs of Ram and spinning drive and it was awful but upgraded the ram and drive to an SSD and it was a complete different experience. Much quicker than my MacBook Air early 2015 for most stuff. I find it funny how the Mac mini 2014 is supported for macOS Big Sur but they have dropped the 2012 Mac mini when the i7 option in the 2012 was faster than the option in the 2014. It makes no sense at all 🤦♂️ I’ll be trying out the patch for unsupported macs when Big Sur is out and wait for the new Apple silicone version of the Mac mini to upgrade to.
14:05, i think that’s because of the HDD in the mac mini, possibly something with APFS?
HDD should not be on apfs. Apfs is for SSDs

I bought an iMac 21.5 with the hard drive and while its not as bad as the Mac mini its pretty bad

Do you have shaky hands? Are you holding the camera wrong? Or it's just that you haven't found a preferred setting for camera stabilisation yet?
A combination of all three probably.
'Active' steady shot crops the image slightly on the Sony, so it's a tradeoff. I have it on the standard setting which isn't quite as effective when comparing to my old Canon. I may switch to active if I feel that videos are too shaky, but I feel that it's just about passable. I can also try to be mindful of it when shooting.
Apple should update the Mac mini by later in 2020, or early in 2021, with new Apple processors. so u would see it in October 2020. so I d wait before thinking about buying one
Hey Tom What’s the specs of your late 2013 retina? Think I might have the same machine. Also will you retire the SuperDrive from your setup now that you have the 2011 MBP?
It's the base model with no GPU, so 2GHz i7 / 8GB / 256GB / Iris Pro.
I haven't thought about retiring the superdrive, that's a good point. I'll have to test the drive in the 17" MacBook Pro.
i'm irritated that apple unsupported the 2012 Mac's. Jess must be annoyed there too as she has the same laptop that i have. but i'll probably upgrade sometime soon.
Online, there’s been quite a bit of success regarding getting older macs that were discontinued with Big Sur up and running with it, I myself have a 13” mid 2012 MBP running Big Sur flawlessly

Gamer208010 Only issues were with WiFi, but that could be fixed by just swapping out some .kext files
Modern OS' are really hard on disks, and I don't really know why. Windows 10 is particularly bad, very thrash happy, almost unusable on a spinner. Don't know what they've added on top of windows 7/8 that causes this, but I guess since they've decided that SSDs are the norm that they're gonna let it run wild with the disk... guess it's the same story on the Mac side or this particular drive is just super-garbo

I have a 2012 mac mini that is using catalina but its so slow since its the basic mac mini but has 8gb ram but I plan on upgrading the ram soon.
@AlpahMax if I were you, I would try to get a newer iMac because the 2012 mac mini doesn't get big sur. Not going to use mine much longer because of what I do I must have the latest os and I don't like the idea of patchers.

Unfortunately I'm still stuck on High Sierra because of NVIDIA and Apple's feud with drivers, it's a shame because I would've loved to try out Catalina on my Mac Pro. Oh well, I can at least try it out on my MacBook Pro..

I hate Catalina, messed up my MacBook Pro. My Adobe Acrobat DC no longer works. I heavily rely on this software. I have decided to move from Mac to Window surface Pro 7 because of this rubbish macOS
that's adobe's fault for not updating it, not apple's. if it's an ancient app that adobe already unsupported it's your fault for not moving to supported software.
If you don’t bother to update your apps, how can you blame it on Apple?
