In about 1956-57 I was watching a similar race with my dad (I was 7-8.) A racer smacked something, and careened into the infield where his car caught fire. I remember seeing him sticking out the hole in the top, but not being able to escape because he couldn't get his seat belt loose. Great video. I will subscribe.
Them Thars honest to God jalopies son, racin' for $20 and a new set of spark plugs! Don't make-em like that anymore....really miss those days.... Thanks for posting this, really made my day. 😇
One of my Dads friends leased out one of his fields for Jalopy races South of Lawrence, Kansas in about the 1952 time period. My Brother and I would sneak down to watch them. Lots of "ruff characters" as my mother would say. But they stopped by our little store and bought lots of food and beer. So it was Win Win for mom.
I've never understood the term "jalopies" when it comes to dirt track race cars. My Father and brothers worked on many peoples cars for many years as well as fielded, drove, and helped others with many race cars. And as far as maintenance is concerned for both, most race cars are better maintained than most of the rolling turds on the highways!
Pretty neat. It doesn't matter, but the newspaper article at the end says 13 May 1956. The title of the video says 1954. Thanks for sharing this stuff.
That was awesome! Great choice of music also.❤

About two blocks. Today, Oliver St. (where it was) is literally more dangerous on weekdays between 2:30 and 3:45 in the afternoon.
Very cool!
I LOVE THIS!!!!!
I thought CeJays was up north on Broadway and 101st or so. Raced bikes there too
That was the Bo Stearns track. I have some footage from there also, in 2 other films here.
