I know someone that wound up using a Colt Walker in a self defense situation. These guns killed plenty of people in their time so they’re definitely effective, I think that as modern people we tend to think that you need something modern to do the job but really a guns a gun.

As modern people, we need to be in the mindset that whoever we are defending ourselves from is likely to have something modern, and that while these guns can get the job done, we aren't making things easy for ourselves if we use them.

A 3rd gen colt SAA was the first gun I ever learned to shoot, shoot quick and shoot accurately. Even learned to shoot on horseback. I have a total of 7 years of defensive and cowboy action training with this style of firearm.
Yes, I do have other handguns I carry, but my Uberti El Patron in .45 Colt is the only handgun I feel truly comfortable carrying in the maine woods and/or the concrete jungle known as Portland, Maine.

Colt did make a single action revolver in 1999 to 2003 for 5 years ONLY and it was catered to the cowboy action shooting fans or enthusiasts or collectors and I own one !!!! It's called the Colt Cowboy Colt 45 single action and yes it has the transfer safety bar so that it can be loaded with all 6 rounds at once just like your Ruger Vaquero single action !! And it is a hoot to shoot !!! The collectors value is going up every day just like the Colt Single Action Army .45Colt as well and if you can find one new in the box you're looking at paying around somewhere in the ballpark figure of $1200 to $1500 bucks because it's Granddaddy is around $2000 to $2500 bucks new in box give or take and they're not making many of them at all these days either but I'm happy to own one of each and they shoot great !!!! Not to brag but I did have my Colt SAA customized by the late great Bob Munden before he passed away may he rest in peace !!!

Just a note: not all SAAs can handle full power, modern loads. Old Vaquero’s can handle my .45 Colt bear loads but that power level is excessive for the new Vaquero. Be sure your firearms can safely handle your load.

I open carry a Uberti 1858 Remington New Model Army. 99% of the time drawing and cocking the hammer stops shitbirds in their tracks. It's in the psyche, that look, that distinctive cocking click. It's as instinctual as the sound of a rattlesnake. Even city folk know what a sixgun sounds like. Thankfully I've never had to shoot a person, but I've defended against aggressive dogs, and Black Hills RNFP knocks a 150lb dog down like a sledgehammer. I love my 1911, but my Remingtons feel like a part of me. Wheelguns require a different mindset and approach to self defense, and smokewagons are diffrenter still. I also have an affinity for anachronism. The '58 just fits. They're not for everybody. But I also shoot an 1874 Shiloh Sharps. Old West guns are in my blood.

The best gun for self or home defense is whatever each individual is the most proficient with! For ME that is the Colt SAA because that is the gun I learned to shoot over 70 years ago, that is the gun that saved my life in the middle of the night in near dark from an armed home invader. Distance was 12 feet! For me the gun shoots where I look without the sights at any distance of 30 feet or less! It's called "pointability", something I have never been able to duplicate with any other handgun. Will that work for anyone else? probably not. More recently I was able to take out a sow feral hog and three of her 5-6 piglets before they disappeared in the tall grass. Distance was from 10 to 20 feet. Could I have done that with any other handgun? Probably not!

I agree that for an inexperienced shooter,a single action may not be the first choice for home defense; but if a bad guy were to break into my house & I were forced to use the big Ruger.....may God have mercy on their soul, because a .45 caliber fired at short range inside a house, won't show any mercy at all,& if the homeowner is using a .45 caliber hollowpoint....the suspect will most likely bleed out before an ambulance can arrive! Having witnessed first hand the damage a .45 can do to a big mule deer...shot placement won't matter much! Like I said a .45colt is a big hole puncher!

I have also seen a hammer technique recommended where one uses the tip of the thumb (rather than hooking the hammer) and then slides the thumb off gently to the left when it comes to full cock. Not as positive as your method but I think the idea was that it was faster and imparted less movement to the gun. Have you experimented with both? Whether the intruder is back in the 1870's or today's home invaders the truth is they are both made of flesh and bone, and they have a tendency to bleed when shot. I think the best advice for a home invasion and when it comes down to a shootout is explained beautifully by John Wayne in the movie scene of the Shootist. But for the record I shoot a 45cal 250 grain bullet and get a wonderful kill at 25 yards with one round in the head the other in the heart every time this all completed in 5 sec. from drawing to second shot strong hand unsupported.

    First notch is a safety....

  • @Aspen7780
    @Aspen7780 11 месяцев назад

A light on a colt SAA??? That would be an abomination if it ever existed.
I grew up shooting SAA starting with the 22 and then the 45 quite extensively. It wasn’t until my early 30s did I ever even touch another pistol, a Glock I think. These are great guns to learn on and they were my woods gun and home protection.
You don’t need to run it one handed. You can, and that’s how it was meant to be used, but no reason to limit yourself for defense.
Another video I saw by a colt saa aficionado “bangbang” did quite a lot of extensive investigative work through colt and army documents and concluded that it was always meant to be carried fully loaded and hammer on the safety notch. He couldn’t find a single legitimate case of someone using the safety notch and putting a hole in their leg. Lots of old cowboy tales but nothing concrete. He was looking for any litigation or some sort of recognition form colt when it was actually in use by the army. He concluded that the “cowboy” load was invented in the John Wayne era and attributed it to Actors and the rise of more modern cowboy competitive shooting. Even the often cited story of the cowboy dropping the stirrup onto the hammer breaking the safety notch firing the gun couldn’t be verified. He went through army manuals used throughout the entire lifetime the colt SAA was in army service and never found a mention of the cowboy load being suggested/used and army and colt manuals always suggested the safety notch be used. He even looked at old west shooting cases. I was very impressed with his deep research. There is absolutely no doubt that carrying hammer on an empty chamber is the safest possible way to carry (other than carrying an empty gun) but looks like that’s not how it was generally done back in the day.

I've been running a 357 Vaquero for the last 7 years, it's my only gun I carry it everyday in my front pocket of my Wrangler jeans, I reload my own ammo. Out of all the people who try to talk about single action you did pretty good. Except I hold my trigger down all the time, for a good grip hold the trigger down hard all the time use your thumb or your other thumb to shoot. You're right practice practice nothing like a single action. As far as holding a light I would hold my light in the other hand way away from my body because if I was in a gun battle I'd shoot at the light. By the way automatic guys don't spin your gun unless you want to shoot yourself in the chest. I would never let a guy carrying an automatic with a bullet in the chamber ride the horse behind me. I can put six out of my Vaquero just as fast as someone can shoot six out of an automatic maybe faster and accurately, and when it comes to coming out of the holster quick-dry forget about it nothing's faster than a single action. Have a good one bro

No it's not in historic record. Wyatt Earp was carry a cap and ball pistol that does not have a safety notch. The only other instance recorded is not of the safety notch breaking but of the unloading notch and was caught by the safety notch. This was during the Armys trials. However the caviate here is there was an obvious manufacturing fall as noted by the Ordinance Officer.
Colt Advertised the manual of arms for 100 years as being a 6 shot pistol carried in the safety notch. The change in Colts manual was do to CAS regulations nothing more.

Great video. I love saa revolvers. For me they are fun to shoot and I'm completely comfortable and accurate with them. I would not hesitate at all for an edc winter carry. I find it hilarious though at all the nay sayers complaints. The first trend I see is that most nay sayers do not own a saa revolver. Yet they are experts in the field. Second, I agree with practice and shot placement. But that's true with any firearm. Third is capacity and reload time. Folks, all this is situational. If I'm going to and urban city area I leave my revolver at home and carry high capacity of I feel the need. Self defense in part is what you can shoot accurately and comfortably. And for me, my Blackhawk does the job.

First off I would like to compliment your spinning, looks pretty good and I am envious. Secondly, of course the SAA is a viable home defense weapon, and aside from a rifle cartridge you could do alot worse than the mentioned calibers. In closing, anyone who believes they need a high cap modern polymer firearm to do the job is not in touch with reality. I've carried a Glock for 20 years, working the road, and I have never used anything but a small hand held light. When I started Glocks couldnt even accept lights so I dont figure I need one now not to mention that the added weight of a light can make polymer handguns malfunction. All things considered, the SAA is more accurate, holds more powerful ammunition, is harder for the bad guy to grab and hold onto, and makes a hell of a club in a CQB situation. I hate to say this but I suspect that you may be suffering from a substance abuse problem.
