When it was set up as Beopjeong-dong in 1982, it would have been named as such because there was a Sangnam-myeon township office there. Sangnam-myeon was created by taking a "sang" in Nam-myeon, Toho-bu, Changwon, and "nam" in Nam-myeon.
Formation and Transition
Originally, it was established in 1895 (the 32nd year of King Gojong's reign) in Happo-hyeon, when the Changwon Provincial Government became Changwon-gun. In Nam-myeon, Changwon Dohobu, Do Sang Il-un, and Do Sang Sam-un became Sangnam-myeon. It was incorporated into Oeseo-myeon, Masan-bu in 1910 and was incorporated into Changwon-gun under the name of Sangnam-ri following the reorganization of the administrative district in 1914. Sangnam-dong was separated into Sangnam 1-dong and Sangnam 2-dong on June 24, 1963, and was incorporated into Masan on July 1, 1973.
On September 1, 1976, a branch office in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do was established, and in 1982, it was newly established in Beopjeong-dong, Changwon. On April 30, 1990, part of Towol-dong and part of Sapajeong-dong were incorporated into Sangnam-dong. In 1995, Sapa-dong, the administrative dong, was divided into Sapa-dong and Sangnam-dong and was established as the administrative dong. Beopjeong-dong, which belongs to Sangnam-dong, includes Sapajeong-dong, Gaumjeong-dong, Towol-dong, Sangnam-dong, Yongji-dong, and Oe-dong.
Natural environment
Sangnam-dong is located in the geographical center of the Changwon Basin and traditionally serves as the center of the area. The surrounding area of the Changwon Basin is located along the Sannok Wansa-myeon, so the villages are located along the Sannok, while Sangnam-dong is formed on a flat area in the center of the basin.
current situation
It is located in the middle of Changwon City. As of December 31, 2009, the area was 1.65 square kilometers, and 34,833 residents (17,549, female) lived in 10,770 households. The fact that Sangnam-dong used to be the site of Sangnam-myeon means that it has long served as the center. Even in the planned Changwon area, Sangnam-dong still serves as a city center geographically and functionally.
It features a department store, which is the center of the city, as well as high-end retailing, social entertainment, restaurants, and business functions, and is also a place where night lights are bright, making it more colorful at night. Cultural relics include prehistoric remains in Sangnam-dong, Jeongjamok in Sangnam-dong, and Jiseokmyo in Sangnam-dong.
