One of the better sounding middle-only I’ve heard for a while. Finding a good sounding middle pup on its own is tough for a strat. They combine amazingly well but rarely shine alone.
hey yia sou john nice playing..was the ssl 6 in the middle? i made a fixed bridge strat with an Australian Huon pine body with the lil 59 in the bridge ssl 6 in the middle and an australian brierley '50s neck pickup..and it sounds sweet ..yia hara from melbourne .. Nick plus i have another 9 guitars with various Duncans ..Seymour makes great sounding pickups
I have a 2013 American Standard with fat 50's pups. Would the lil 59 work well with the middle and neck stock pups or would thr jbjr be a better fit? I play classic rock, blues, country as well as modern tock like the Foo Fighters. I need more oomph than I currently have.
Hello, love this demo again ...! I just picked a John Page ashburn Classic ( modern strat from Japan and checked in the USA !) , love the lutherie but the pickups are a bit thin sounding , especially the neck pickup...I put a set of Grosh Vintage fat 60 pickup but there is still a lack of bass on the neck pickup( my ears use to listen to warm clean sounds on my other guitars, a humbucker neck Tele and a335 P90 !) ...which pickup would give me warm, bassy clean and bluesy sound when drive is on ? Little 59 Seymour ? Single coil choice ? Any other idea....I need this guitar and love it with the tremolo i needed...thanks for your answer and help ! Regards from France
Thinking of putting 3 lil 59s in my Strat. Is it possible to wire them in such a way that you can coil tap them all separately? This would make for some killer tones!
It is possible to wire/configure the pickups in such a way so you can have access to all aforementioned tonal possibilities. Wiring schematics are included w/ the pickups but it would be best to have an experienced guitar tech set it up due to the fact that there will indeed be detailed & meticulous soldering work required.
The Lil'59 is amazing, but what rig are you playing on? Especially the overdrive seems great, the combination reminds me of A Night At The Opera, in particular the guitar sound of Death on Two Legs. P.S. I use an ssl-5 in my bridge position, which is another great pickup, and before I had two hot rails, an older one from the late '90 which sounded slightly better than the more recent one, but yeah, Seymour Duncan does the best stuff around!
Thank you for the positive feedback, it's very much appreciated. The equipment used was the Soldano Atomic 16 tube amp combo & Mesa Boogie 1/12 cab (with the Electro Voice EVM12L speaker). A Shure SM57 was used to mic the cab.
Only thing throwing me off from having this pick up configuration is that SD's website says that the 2 and 6 are for lighter gauge strings. I use 12s with big frets, does anyone know the equivalent staggered Pickups?
Thanks for the info- I'm undecided between a few configurations I'm thinking about. Ssl 1, 5 and mini 59, or x2 Antiquity Texas hots with a Pearly Gates in the bridge. Also really love the Twang Banger. I'm just going to have to get more strats!
I think I've settled on a Custom Shop Little Pearly Gates for the bridge (need me some Billy Gibbons in there), but I like the principle of this balanced HSS setup. Will the SSL1s match output with the Pearly in a similar way to the 59?
I was goin' to ask the same question. I've always had problems when choosing the caps for HSS configurations. It's hard to come to a value that will sound good for all the pickups.
Could I make this set with the humbucker? I mean, is there a too big difference in output between the 59 and the vintages(mainly in the humbucker version)?
You can totally do this with a regular humbucker, and it would sound amazing. I don't know if I'd go with anything more powerful than a 59 (or so), if volume balance between pickups is important to you.
Obrigado Portugal. A powerful humbucker will have difference in volume from a single coil. Bridge pickup height adjustment will help in balancing out the volume to a certain extent.
Yes, you can choose whether you want to go staggered or flat. You can learn more about the differences here: www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?203755-Staggered-pole-pieces-does-it-matter
***** You certainly can. We usually recommend 250K because some people find it a tad bright at 500K but others love it.
eventually a versatile demo(n)stration without distorted sounds and useless riffs this is the way the way of a pure and remarkable presentation
Thank you very much for all the support Achillea, really appreciate it!
I have the Lil 59 in the bridge on my Strat. I just got a SSL-1 for the middle and they sounds really really nice! These pups won't disappoint!!!
that lil 59 sounds great!!
That lil 59 turned that strat into a beast ,,nice

Great playing and demo!
Finally a single coil humbucker for the start thank you im gonna mod my Strat for that old school Billie joe Armstrong sound
The 59 sounds so great on a strat.
Sounds good, I can almost here the music supporting you . . .
ya'll at Duncan should demo lil 59 in series parallel and tapped
Have one in my G&L USA legacy... Sounds fantastic, thick full all the way right up metal.
Amazing video, great performance!!! 👏🔝🎸🎶💯👌
Grazie mille Marianna🙏 🎸🎼Very much appreciate your support🎶
I have had a Lil 59 neck/duck bucker middle/JB jr. Bridge set up for about 15 years now....great combo!
I think that’s the same as their “everything axe” combo! Nice set!!
John you rock!! xx
Would the little 59's work good as a set on a 2023 amer prof 2 strat?
Absolutely!
@@seymourduncan it wouldn't be an issue with the push/push tone pot? Would you still get at least some of the typical strat tone with all 3 59's?
Even better...
Good review, cheers!
Thinking about put them on my strat, but what the value of the pots of the volume and tone should I get, 250k, 500k or combination of two?
I'd leave it with 250 for a warmer tone.

bitchin playing John you made some real grooving sounds
I find it surprising that barely any reviews talk about the pot values used while mixing humbuckers and single coils.
ThatRandomGuyInTheComments agreed, although Seymour Duncan makes their single coil sized humbuckers specifically for standard 250k Strat pots
Do I have to change the 250K pot? What about the 2nd position?

is the amp sound mic'ed or is this audio from the camera? kinda makes it pointless if its camera audio...
Which pickup is in the middle, the SSL-2 or the SSL-6?
Same question
is it possible to combine this pickup with other dimarzio area series? cause i dont want to mess my guitar up
the strato fender guitar that has the seymour Duncan Little 59, which series is or model exactly? please, it sounds amazing!
Marvin Joel Sarazua Chay Thank you for your comment and feedback, it's very much appreciated.
Fender Standard Stratocaster MIM 2006.

John Patelis Thanks! Great sound, really!
That was an SSL-6 in the middle and an SSL-2 in the neck.
Only thing throwing me off from having this pick up configuration is that SD's website says that the 2 and 6 are for lighter gauge strings. I use 12s with big frets, does anyone know the equivalent staggered Pickups?
The SSL-5 is the staggered version of the -6, and the SSL-1 is the staggered version of the -2.

Personally, I think the SSL-1s would balance better EQ-wise with the Pearly. Output between the Pearly and 59 is about the same.
Grazie Mille Anna!!!
Just bought the antiquitys I think I love them they around very bright in my egnater amp but its been a week there growing on me!
How well would a little 59 work with cool rails?
TheDarkerWalrus Are you using the Cool Rails in the middle?
Great! what pots and cap value do you use? thanks!
I was goin' to ask the same question. I've always had problems when choosing the caps for HSS configurations. It's hard to come to a value that will sound good for all the pickups.
Ssl2 its in middle u neck?
Is the ssl-2 in the middle position or neck? tks
Seymour Duncan Vintage Strat SSL-2 pickups were used in the middle & neck position.
Thank you and btw...I like your tone and playing...
sam cuschieri Thank you very much, do appreciate your comments & feedback.
@@John_Patelis what amp did you use?

Obrigado Portugal.

Bridge pickup height adjustment will help in balancing out the volume to a certain extent.
John, but in this case, is it significant? To the point that this set doesnt match much?
nice sound, can i change the ssl2 to ssl1 on neck? thks
Yes, you can choose whether you want to go staggered or flat. You can learn more about the differences here: www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?203755-Staggered-pole-pieces-does-it-matter
SRV used the middle PU a lot
So does Robin Trower
I use lil 59 on neck position in my strat. is it okay or lil 59 should be use on bridge position?
New Batman We have bridge/middle and neck versions. So use it according to which one you got.
***** my bad forget to see the SL59-1n code..still waitin for the demo tho hehe..
I have Humbucker JB4 bright, duckerbucker middleand 59 little neck, What pots recommend??
I'd personally go with a 250k pots all around.
I haveSD 's in one strat and Dimarzio's in an other, the dimarzio's smoke the Sd's the dimarzio Area58 is the best blues tone sound on any guitar....
so that lil 59 is suppose to be like a PAF bucker???
It is as close as you can get to a PAF sound in a single coil size.
can you put them in a hss srat
You will need a pickguard that fits: an SSS one. However, you can use a regular '59 in the bridge of an HSS Strat.
The lil 59 sounds exactly the same in just about every style he plays up until about 4:30.
They sound cool but it lost the real strat sound
The sound of the guitar in this video sounds thin and artificial.
Try a tube amp and a good Mic.
It is a valve amp. Just not close miced. Should be fine to get an impression.
Mixing styles, volumes and slide to compare tones doesn't help.
