I found once I started working this way, my confidence started to grow and it helped my decision making. Also makes you realise the manipulation you have at your disposal with regards to moving paint around (not being scared to make mistakes). Definitely feel I levelled up once I started trying to work this way.
I love your videos! I'm primarily a sculptor but haven't had access to a kiln really since Covid and you've really got me excited about painting again. You're actually reaffirming a lot of things I learned in art school in my painting classes which I thought funny after watching your art school video:) I feel like I'm cheating on my best friend who is a painting professor but I'm definitely signing up for your basics course to revisit the fundamentals.
That's interesting you are a sculptor and like the videos bc I have always thought the way I go about oil painting is similar to sculpting. If you like the youtube videos you will love the course. Happy painting!
@@paintcoach I agree. It's the working from large forms to details. I actually know some painters who work very detailed from the beginning and/or work one section of the painting completely before moving on and I was so confused. It seems very paint by number like you say especially when they use grids/projectors. They also tend to work primarily from photographs so I love that you encourage people to paint from life. My thought is it's from the lack of technical training in art schools since most of these painters can artspeak their work like pros. Just read an article about David Hockney saying he hates doing student studio visits now because no one can draw anymore.
As a beginner it is so difficult to pick up an over sized brush and block the canvas with colours.... you have somehow given me that courage. I m very grateful for your this how to start technique
Ooohohohoho, that video is exactly for me :D I have two problems: can't decide what to paint (too many ideas) and can't finish it in one sitting. Thanks!!
Very good video Chris. I see you included the excellent book "The War of Art" in you reading list. I have read it several times when I needed a nudge to get going again. Another book I would highly recommend is "Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking" by David Bayles and Ted Orland. This is another book I have read several times It's not aimed exclusively towards painters, but towards making art in general, be it painting, writing, music, etc. If you haven't already read it, maybe you would want to give it a read.
I'm a little confused and I'm sure a little playing around will reveal a lot but there are a lot of relative artists that paint wet on wet say to paint "thin to thick" but then you have good old Bob Ross that insists over and over "thin paint sticks to thin paint" which has worked for me in the past. Can someone break down this dichotomy for me??? So confused. Thanks in advance and thanks fpor your videos Paint Coach, they have been REALLY helping!
Hey there paint coach. I've been avoiding using black, and can see why people do that (really helpful tip), but aside from making a black canvas, in which cases would you use black? just avoid it all together?
I use Ivory brushes after your recommendation. But they always splay out if I use them with gamsol. On their website, they don't recommend using OMS with synthetic brushes. Do you have the same problem?
I don't know why I keep watching your videos, don't even use oil paint. maybe it's because of your simple straight to point instruction on how you approach your drawings that I can apply in other mediums to...
After such videos I wanna go and paint right now 🔥🔥🔥
mission accomplished
I do too lol

When the paint coach is so good, that even the crows get inspired.
Rosemary and Co. should add a “Paint Coach” paint brush set. 😀
I agree.
0:35 crows are legitimately brilliant. I wouldn't be surprised to see a crow painting on the internet within the next 2 or 3 years.
Especially if it gets a brain chip implant from Musk!
This exactly what I needed to hear right now.

I love when you add humor. Crows. Funny
Thank you for making these videos! 😀
Thanks Chris! Very interesting and inspiring video for landscaping. Definitely worth the try. Blessings and take care.
Thanks for the tips! I'll have to give it a shot

If that clip on facebook is correct then Happy Birthday to Paint Coach! If not correct I withdraw my statement.
Another great instruction video! Thank you.

I have done plain air painting so many time never even thought that would happen the crow is like I'm trade this paint for some grub 😹 nice video 😄
Now that would be a painting...the crow trying to steal the paint!
Great video as always!
I have a suggestion. Could you make a video of explaining and doing grisaille with a small sketch maybe?

I like to paint landscapes, but they always end up looking funky because there not scaled correctly, any advice?
practice drawing. So much of painting is being able to draw. I am actually working on putting together a drawing for painting course right now
