Tool restoration projects are my lunchtime work-from-home Zen. Great job! I appreciate the "humbler" approach to accomplishing your restorations, and I think you'll inspire many folks to use their tools as creatively as you do.
Thanks Matt. I always go back and forth on finishes. Part of me would like to restore it 100% original to see what it must have looked like back in the day. And part of me wants to mod the heck out of it and see what I can do to it. This time....mod’in it won! I was pleased with the final colors.
Thanks for sharing that restoration. I picked up some tips on grinding off and retapping for the springs for when I feel brave enough to tackle my pipe wrench. All the best!
Great resto video. -- Btw, anyone that tries to tell you what they woulda done while restoring (aside from just shortcuts for same results) really need to just make their own channel. The style and colors you choose are self-expression -- keep it up... looks great.
I’m here for these videos bro! You don’t have many is there another channel I don’t know about or what? Great work & I love how quiet the videos are. No talking, just captions & work. Love it!
The restoration was amazing, the yellow wasn’t good for me. Also, a two component paint would be the way to go. And instead of black paint I would blue the parts instead.
A super job!! Wish I had your skill and patience. From the few tool restorations i've done, I learned to leave no bare steel. It started rusting again in no time. So lately I would blue or black all those surfaces. Oiling the bued or blackened surfaces also seem to last longer than on bare steel.
Hey Deon! Absolutely blued and oiled for a working tool. Keep in mind clear 2K spray lacquer is as tough as paint if you wanted to protect ‘bare” metal, but keep that look. Thanks for the comment.
Hey Frank! You make a great point. The paint I used was ceramic impregnated...pretty tough stuff. But typically I use off-the-shelf Rust-oleum....not so tough. It’s really a matter of cost. But, 2K paint , as you said, or powder coating would take a beating way beyond what I’m using. As my channel grows it would be fun to do a project in 2K, wet sand it and wheel it out. Thanks for the comment!
The ceramic paint was left from painting the brake calipers on my car. The plan is to go powder coating for sure. If I wasn’t trying to make videos of the processes I would go buy a $75 used oven and the $75 powder coating gun and be done with it… But because I video it… To get the proper impact for the viewer the oven should have a glass door which adds cost. So that’s more of a future wish list thing along with a sand blaster.
@@KILORESTORATION I think that most of your present and future viewers would prefer to see that it's not needed to have expensive equipment for doing restorations. I would recommend you get the entry level equipment for powder coating to begin with. Please ask the others here for advice.
Hey Anthony! When I started RUclips I couldn’t find any copyright free music and didn’t realize that RUclips offered some. So that is something I wrote just to put in the videos. It has no name. Thanks for the question!
Hey Ryan! Typically I just buy a kit that includes grinding stones, polishing stones, deburring tips and what not. Dremel makes a great one. But I think the one from Harbor Freight is fine too. To really know what you want to use for any given situation, you just have to experiment. Thanks for asking!
Great video! I just wanted to comment on the folks who tell you how to “improve” the quality of your work or suggest what tools and materials you should use. Maybe they should give example in their videos. Please don’t let the criticism discourage you. Keep up the good work.
Amazing job with the restoration, I admire your patience with the sanding. However the Yellow was straight up foreigner spec. I feel like a neutral dark grey or charcoal would have suited better or a polished handle with a black recess. Hope you do more of these!
I was gonna say; I saw you with the screwdriver at first, then finally a punch.. and was relieved, finding myself thinking; "he is not a total barbarian". You need a nice set of drift punches and a couple in brass, maybe Santy Claws can get you some if you are a good boy.
You do realise the shame that all users of these tools will feel now when they get out their tools to use and the possible comments from somebody who has seen your vid !! Nice job.
I've got a Vintage Rigid pipe wrench that truly needs restoration. Missing jaw teeth, handle beat to hell, missing chunks out of jaw, rusty, dirty and OLD. Perfect candidate for restoration. Interested in the challenge?
Sorry. Roger, I wouldn’t feel comfortable working on projects for other people. Then the pressure would really be on! But thanks for the vote of confidence.
Looks really nice, but... 1: Please don't drag your file backwards, it doesn't do anything other than wear the file. Way to trigger an old fitter... 2: Why did you paint the threaded piece on the upper jaw, the paint will wear off with use anyway?
Hey Henrik! I actually do know proper filing technique. But no, I don’t always do it. It’s a bit of a bad habit. ..I admit. What I painted on the wrench was for appearances....my brother has it hanging up it was never intended to go back in to service. Thanks for commenting.
@@KILORESTORATION Bad habits die hard... :P Well, it's almost a shame not using it after putting all that time and energy into restoring it, but it *is* very decorative. :)
My 2 cents. Should have just sanded the blazes out of it then CHROMED IT ALL! Ok, at least chemically etched it all black then polished it all to a shinny thing. Would have silenced all the color comments! Also, as a helpful note, go to H.F. and get a small hand held media blaster. Will save you a lot of time cleaning everything up. Provided that you do more of these. Finished project can go up for bid. Who wants it can get it for a price. Why not?
Thanks for the comments, Danny! I do hope you upgrade some of my tools someday and get some new ones. But for now I’m just trying to make do with what I have.
I wouldn't have painted the jaws and the threads of the adjustment shaft, and the bits of spring steel - those will both get all scratched up - should have just sanded and wire brushed them super clean, and blued them.
what colour I suppose it depends are you RESTORING it then you need to try to match it original colour scheme as best you can. Or are you Restoring it, making it work again, if it is for yourself knock yourself out choose colours you like and go fo it. or ore you doing for someone then consult them otherwise you could end up wearing the wrench up the side of the head.
Thanks Alan for the comment! It is my brothers wrench he approved the colors! He watched the video before he saw the wrench and he thought it looked good when he saw it in person he was blown away… He said the video does not do it justice.

It took only 3 of your videos to get into my top3 of restoration channels. Amazing work.
Thanks M T!
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wrench like me?" 😊
Too funny! Lol.
Amen!
"gold Jerry,gold!"
I’m not sure why you quoted “Amazing Grace”.

As a professional plumber this restoration is much appreciated 😍
Oh the time invested into this is astounding to me. The one thing of real value in this life is time.
Awesome...!!! You are a Master. Your attention to detail is amazing. Thank You...? Heading to the garage to clean my humble tools.
Great video, didn’t like the colors you picked at first but once I saw them on the wrench I wouldn’t go another way.
Thanks Matt. I always go back and forth on finishes. Part of me would like to restore it 100% original to see what it must have looked like back in the day. And part of me wants to mod the heck out of it and see what I can do to it. This time....mod’in it won! I was pleased with the final colors.
I like when u wax to cover the scratches which most restorer don’t do n I like how you mad a colourful paint gr8 job u deserve a big thumbs up 👍
That’s now a museum piece! Incredible!

Found your videos this morning, very nice job.......keep up the good work and jokes.
Quality work, definitely deserves more viewers

I see you're a man of culture (i've got the same tap & die kit, and same vice, probably from the same store....) amazing restoration as usual!
God job and thanks for showing us how it’s done... I’m a first time guy that subbed... 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing job man. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Again, a super excellent detailed restoration. I would not have chosen yellow -- kind of makes it unhappy!

Just love your work you do everything correctly and get the results you deserve you have a talent
Brilliant, I wasn't expecting the bolts to replace the rivets for the springs
Bellissimo! Avrei lasciato senza vernice le parti che fanno attrito, ma per il resto magistrale lavoro anche di montaggio video! Complimenti!!
Happy to have seen this before the channel takes off. Pretty sure its gonna blow up!
Hey Scoutandlouie! Thanks for the encouraging words! Fingers crossed!

Really beautiful work. Nice sense of humour as well making the video quite entertaining! Thank you! Did miss the pussycat!
Nice drawing!
Beautiful work, thanks for sharing
A great restoration with fine colors but I wonder how long the paint will last as it is not a two-component paint. A tool for display?

Could you elaborate on the different styles of dremel stones and sanding pads you use please. Your Proto Ratchet was otherworldly.

Did your brother get his wrench back? And did he like it?
Yes and yes. It’s now a display piece in his shop.
Love that yellow 👍👍👍
I couldn't figure out after all that wonderful work if you had recut the teeth to make them sharp or not.??
Hey P T ! Nope, I never did recut the teeth just some clean up with a file that the video doesn’t show. Thanks for the comment.

What's the reason for the bondo instead of just painting directly?
