Is Nemesis and Tainted Grail on the #11 and #12 spot? Of all these BG's, your ten and the two I mentioned, it's Nemesis I really wanna jump in and play. And everyone I know "understands the game", just mention "Aliens" and they are ready to go.
This is a great list. I’ve watched most of your solo plays of these games. I highly recommend those videos to anyone wondering if these games are right for them, especially since some of these games get pretty expensive. Also, watching the setup videos before reading the instructions makes everything that much easier.
Great list. Every time Folklore comes up, it's rarely mentioned that this board game also comes with a campaign creation toolkit meaning there's a lot of quality user generated content out there, not counting the free campaigns released as pdf by the publlisher on the road.
Fantastic notification to get on a Friday arvo. So glad Cthulhu made it to #5. I think the bad press around the massive miniature put me off the Kickstarter, but I scooped it up on eBay and couldn't be happier. Such a fun game and fits my limited playtime lifestyle perfectly. Great vid as always.
Sounds like perfect timing for you! ;) I think you made a great choice. DMD was my surprise hit of 2019. I hoped it would be good but they nailed it and did some different from other H. P. Lovecraft games. Plus it’s the quickest to setup and play of the entire list which is a huge plus.
Thanks for this fantastic overview of all these games. I love solo dungeon crawlers, Journeys in middle earth sounds quite interesting. Might give that a try!
Great video. My top two are Gloomhaven (finally completed the main campaign after 2 years) and Sword & Sorcery depending on mood. I would compare GH to Icewind Dale , weak story but total freedom of group composition, whereas S&S is more of a Baldur's Gate - you will want to go through the scenarios multiple times with different named characters. Can't deny the mountain of tokens and many little quirks and inconsistencies in S&S, compared to the simplicity of Gloomhaven, but the trade off is arguably a richer experience. Another game I would recommended for a portable solo dungeon crawl experience would be Legends Untold, either the caves or the sewers set, really nice character development and combat.
Thanks for the great list and on the spot comments. Congrats to the family for the new baby! you wont roll solo for long man, you'll have little players before you know it!
Great list! Watched your 2018 list and then discovered this video. So now I watched them both 😁 Just discovered your channel - but love your videos. Just subscribed. Thanks for putting out this awesome content!
Even if you don't like JRPGs, the best thing about Middara is that it is a refreshing escape from all things Orcs and Trolls, and shows that it is possible to produce an awesome miniatures game that doesn't rely on 'dark and disturbing'.
When it got to 2 and there was no KD:M, I got sad and thought it fell off the list, but you pulled a M. Night Shamalan plot twist and moved it up instead!
I sold my Kingdom Death copy. Showdowns were repetitive and involved too much luck (dice rolls). One tactic, attack from behind. It`s a great looking game, for sure. Thx for your list!
@@RollingSolo Well, I play a lot of war games like Conflict of Heroes or Enemy Action: Ardennes. Dungeons...Zombicide Black Plague or Deep Madness. But the top game for me right now is Space Core. Cheers!
Hello there my friend! Just found your channel and I am loving it. I was wondering if your list still holds or if games like Oathsworn now make the list? If you be so kind in recommend me the game you would pick if you could only play one so to speak? I love boardgames but I dont have a steady crew to play with so I tend to buy games that have a solo component but some of them tend to be way less enjoyable while solo. Is there a game that you think that shines as much solo as in co op? I am looking for somehting that I could play for hours and hours by myself that have classes and good replayability. I am looking at Oathsworn and I wouldnt mind getting the WHOLE thing but I am not 100% that the game fits what I am looking for...and paying 500 bucks to then happen what often happens when I buy those games, which is play it solo a few runs, finding out the game is way better in co op (or worst, its supposed to be played co op and the single player is a bit clunky), its something I want to avoid and make the best decision I can. Do you think Oathsworn is the game for me? Or would you recommend somethign else? I know its a long stretch leaving a comment in a 3 year old video but here I am. Thanks and keep up the good content.
I'm glad to hear that! ;D I think I may need to do a revised version of this list. Might be time for that! Oathsworn would 100% be on the list as this point. Sorry for the late reply but if you're eyeing that one I recommend it!
Love Middara, I'm a project collaborator and all in on both KS so I can't wait for late spring/early summer when the next wave releases. Love Sword and Sorcery, I feel you missed speaking about my fav part of that game which is the AI which is fantastic, I've also proof read the new stuff and can say that its very exciting to see how that game has progressed and the more detail they've added to that area, with the AI which is even more interesting in how groups of monsters function together along with the new minions swarming towards you constantly, they have also really listened to the biggests issues for balance making items level restricted and also the most common complaint outside of the fiddlyness (which is sadly something that just comes with the game, though I dont personally feel its that bad at all) which was a lack of monster variety the new content not only is interchangable with monsters to the original but also has far greater variety.. Can't wait.. Beyond those I am using Mansions of madness to get my partner into gaming, we are playing once a week at the moment so that's a huge development. I've always been interested in Shadows of Brimstone, but I'm a completionist and I can't justify the expense for a game I'm still on the fence about in terms of campaign development, it has my attention sure but with many products out of print replaced by new core boxes and additional side content its a very difficult game to know where to buy into and for someone like me who has to have it all, its a complete nightmare, and I'll be at the mercy of resellers and ebay for getting many products and that's not something I'm wanting to do at the moment. My all time number 1 game is Kingdom Death monster, however I don't consider it a dungeon crawler, at least not yet, there are a couple of expansions in the pipeline (I'm all in on that one) that will bring a dungeon crawler aspect to the game and I'm very interested to see how that shapes up, I've got to say it has so much new stuff incoming with the advanced rules and strains its likely to stay in the tops of peoples lists for years to come. Finally in defence of Aeon Tresspass, I'm all in on that one as well because its taken a lot of KDMs ideas and developed them, they've evolved the combat system and pushed things further and to me that is fantastic and it leaves me very excited to see where this new genre of massive campaign games ends up.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Was interesting to read :) I put KDM in the dungeon crawler boat due to it meeting the three main criteria of a dungeon crawler. “Dungeon crawl or crawler” is a relatively broad term in board games and they can come in all variety of flavors, but usually, they involve several key elements. * Dungeon: Either procedural and random, or preset through a series of scenarios or a campaign. * Dynamics Hero Characters or Items: Gaining XP and /or upgrading skills. Find or buy items and/or gain loot. * Monsters or an Entity: Villain and/or enemies that are mean to stop you or prevent you from succeeding (AI or another player character). Although it also lends itself heavily towards an RPG feel. :)
@@RollingSolo I understand why its put in with crawlers, it just doesn't have the hidden exploration and treasure hunting aspects for me and also includes lots of things that aren't traditionally in dungeon crawlers, such as civ building and world creation. Its me being picky, I also know the Gloomhaven is a dungeon crawler but it doesnt feel like one, it feels like a narrative competitive card game with a dungeon crawler theme. It is clearly a crawler but I just don't feel its `feels like a crawler. The game is genius, not my favourite because of how uncrawler like it feels but it is brillant in terms of design and function, I like the game I just don't mentally put it in the same group of games mentally. Same argument could be made for other games however so its a matter of taste, Middara is a campaign game rather than a crawler really but it feels like a crawler and has every crawler element installed. Kingdom Death has in fact started its own genre of game currently referred to as CABBAGE (Co-op AI Boss Battle against Game Engine I think) though that may change at some point to be something a little more digestable...I also dislike this name because it doesn't cover either the RPG character development aspects or the Civilisation development side which is easily as important as the boss battles against the AI, if not more so as that's your goal. So maybe I'm just fussy and don't like lumping games together in groups with other games for easy genre descriptions as I feel the hole just doesn't fit all these polygones without a hammer.
Completely understand and agree with your thoughts. I can see that side of the coin too. Dungeon crawlers are just a very broad term. Which makes it hard to separate out the hybrids for sure! KDM certainly has a bunch of RPG elements within that make it more of an advanced or hybrid dungeon crawler.
Surprised to see descent isn't on the list. Also journeys in middle earth I found to be very repetitive and uninspired in mechanics, but glad to see people like it.
I consider Imperial Assault and Descent to be interchangeable at #7. All depends which you prefer. For me IA is a step forward and I have enough fantasy based dungeon crawlers. For others Star Wars isn’t their thing. :)
So happy to see Shadows of Brimstone still on the list :D I was thinking to jump into the folklore Kickstarter last year but I did the Brimstone one instead
David Allamby you can start with any of those, depends on the theme you prefer. Also the they’re all interchangeable so you can mix them together. In the long run there’s really no wrong choice, unless you just hate the theme of one of them. They are reprinting city of the ancients and swamp of death with better minis (the first run of those two core boxes the minis were just bad). So be on the lookout for those.
For a person that is not that big of a fan of Star Wars would you suggest getting Imperial Assault. I noticed that a lot of Dungeon Crawlers ether use classic medieval monster setting or Cthulhu setting. Its just a lot of the same thing or would you suggest something like Brimstone which has a little of everything. Tbh I shouldn't even be asking and should just wait cause I have all of Middara coming, as well as Etherfields, and Aeons Trespass next year lol.
Also, it would be awesome if you could repeat the name of the game 2-3 times while you talk about it. I consume a lot of my RUclips content while on the go, or doing chores, and if you miss the name it kinda hard to get back on track
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll do my best to attempt this in the future. I’ve already filmed another but future ones I’ll aim to repeat the game name. Cheers!
Hey Brock! Thanks for watching and great question. I’d need a bit to write that all out. In the window of a new baby sometime soon so I’ll have to pass on that for now due to time. If I remember I’ll come back to this :)
You have to do 4 for Middara. Like Zombicide: Black Plague it’s nigh impossible without four. You CAN do 2 characters with Middara but you need the solo-player “upgrades” for each character to match the enemy difficulty. Just my $0.02.
@@RollingSolo Completely understand! Life. Maybe I can narrow it a bit since I dont own all of these, but am trying to decide if I should wait for my group to be ready or tackle them solo. Top of the list would be Gloomhaven, LoTR, Imperial Assault, and SandS. Thanks again for the great content!
Brock Huffman Gloomhaven I would do three characters solo. Sounds like a lot but if you can handle it the strategies between then will be fun. Two is also a-ok if speed is your thing. IA I would go with two. Middara I would go two full characters and then attach a streamlined (forget the term but there is a card for each hero to give you very condensed version) character to each. SoS two is more than enough. LOTR I’d go three.
Great video. Good list you made here, i do agree with you in a lot of your opinions. I will say KDM is uniq, but i got tired of the game after 20years (in-game), the game is sadistic, brutal and so evil with clever schemes and fantastic AI system, to me KDM is more a survival game than a dungeon crawl but it doesn't matter. My top #1 is SoB, the game is huge, So fun to play, lots of OMG and wauw effects. Thinking, this is fight is going to end bad... turns out to be epic battles, ending with a lot of loot and a great feeling of achievement. Game is so rewarding during play, a with lot of risk taking both during the mines and when you make a town visit. My no. #1 for sure, no doubt.
Hey! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Always good hearing other perspectives. SoB is a fantastic dungeon crawler. Likely the most complete (although will probably never be complete) dungeon crawlers on the list. Love the unknown and exploration in it. Keeps things tense and interesting!
Hey Arman! The only DC based miniature game I have is Batman Gotham City Chronicles. So I can’t do much ranking but the minis are very nice in that one. :)
Kingdom Death is top of the crop. Cool Mini or Not is way up there. Fallout Wasteland Warfare from Modiphius has very nice resin miniatures. Those are probably my top three. 👌🏼
I’m very intrigued by it. I get a very KDM inspired vibe from it. There are differences it’s trying to implement. I think it comes down to whether you like what it offers different from KDM or you go with KDM as it’s available and AT is inspired from it. If it’s cost then just get if the above will be easy on the wallet. I’d suggest any of the others from the list here. :)
Kingdom Death: Monster is not a dungeon crawler. There is no crawling whatsoever. Personally, I don’t think Journeys in Middle Earth is a dungeon crawler either, but I can at least see some arguments for it. KD:M, though, is not at all.
Hey Mitch! Thanks for watching. :) They most certainly are in that broad category from my perspective. A “Dungeon crawl or crawler” is certainly a broad term but I believe it hits these three keys found in them. * Dungeon: Either procedural, random, or preset through a scenario or campaign. * Dynamic Hero Characters or Items: Gaining XP and /or upgrading skills. Find or buy items and/or gain loot. * Monsters or an Entity: Villain and/or enemies that are meant to stop you or prevent you from succeeding (AI or another player character).
E Lowe Sorry if I offended you. Not sure where the hostility comes from. I simply commented because it was weird to see KD:M on this list. It’s like seeing Agricola on a list of favourite deck building games. Didn’t mean to ruin your day
Yeah, I think the only difference is the combat maps are wide open so you don't technically 'crawl' through them'. But that's not really an Agricola-Deck Building type distinction. It's more like saying Lords of Waterdeep is not a worker placement game because the cubes are adventurers and not 'workers'.
Great list! But is it really fair to call KDM a dungeon crawler when there's no dungeon or exploration piece to the game? It's more a civilization builder and tactical battle game in my opinion? Still very interested to try it out though...

Great video. Coming from Descent, IA, and Zombicide BP and I need help deciding wht to get next. Right now between Cthulhu, Sword and Sorcery, Gloomhaven, or Folklore. Any advice? Most likely playing solo or with my 8yo son who is a big fan of DnD. Picking up Oathsworn and Frosthaven but those won’t arrive until next year. Need something for this summer. Help!!! :)
I would go Death May Die. You can get it now, plus get it to the table the fastest and is a lot of fun. Your eight year old would grasp DMD as long as the subject matter isn’t an issue. Honestly though, this could be a great timeframe for a campaign game like Gloomhaven and Frosthaven too. Tough choices there! :D
Rolling Solo Thank you very much. Good advice. KDM would amazing and I think my son would be ok with it (assuming I was careful about expansions) but hard to pull the trigger given the price (already have gone big on Oathsworn and Frosthaven). I think I am going to settle on GH but Cthulhu is a close second.
I'm new to hobby boardgames. Don't quite understand what kickstarter is or how it works though. Many of the games I see reviews for turn out to be unavailable or very expensive. Interesting video though there are so many games it's almost impossible to know where to start.
Hello, very nice video as always. Debate here for the viewers: MoM or Lord of the Rings? I'm hesitating like never... I like the card mechanics in LOTR but does it get tedious ? Is MoM more replayable than LOTR thanks to Valkyrie ? Is LOTR feels "empty" regarding theme an immersion ? Thanks in advance, help me to decide please !
Really really love cthulhu death may die. 😍Great it is so high. Also like to play sword & sorcery, adventure tactics, zombicide black plague, descent.. Want to check out Lord of the rings, imperial assault and mansions of madness after seeing this 😁👌 with how many characters do you play mansions of madness solo? PS. I don't have problem with handling more.
DMD is fantastic. Very very well balanced for tight games all the time. Thanks for sharing your likes as well. It’s been a bit but usually two and sometimes three.
Hello Paulo! The worry behind app dependance has removed as there is proof the apps continue to work and are available long after the life of the game. Mansions certainly needs the app as the amazing stories are driven from it as well as a number of other gameplay mechanics. Mansions 1st Edition was a nightmare time wise. 2nd Edition really is a gem. Cheers!
Hey DTM! I put it in the category with 7th Continent as more of an adventure game. It’s certainly a hybrid but I only wanted pure dungeon crawlers. I have another list coming soon to cap off 2019. Stay tuned!
Great list! I have been playing Middara since Xmas (gift to myself :P) and I haven't made a dent into the adventure book. On chapter two (page 73/480). Looking forward to playing Folklore, although the miniatures are impossible to find since the reprint. Not shocked to see KDM, but I wish it wasn't on the list cause I will never be able to afford the game.
That’s an epic gift to yourself! I like it ;) I’m also looking forward to the new content from Folklore. Such a cool setting! KDM will be around for the long haul. Trading is always a possibility as well. Local board game FB groups are good for that!
You may try it for the mine and portal scenarios but once you experience the Frontier Town material, you’ll be hooked. I speak from experience. One word: jailbreak. :)
Interesting list. Nonetheless I really wonder where all the love for Lotr: Journeys comes from. We find it very repetitive, very dull to play with uninspired Quest design and no Lotr feeling at all. I I would mention Secrets of the lost tomb here. Maybe the new Secrets of the lost Station will be more popular and (Hopefully!) equally good. ;) Machina Arcana is worth a mention as well as Perdition's Mouth. Imperial Assault and MoM2 would not be on my list at all. ;) Secret Unknown Stuff- Escape from Dulce is awesome as well if you like dice chucking mayhem with hilarious encounters. :)
One major flaw was Journeys didn’t have a campaign that grabbed me. The villians, location and narrative didn’t have the weight I hoped for. See my comments in the video on that. Ironically a day after I filmed this a leak of the cover art for the first expansion for Journeys landed. Showing Gandalf, The Balrog and Mines of Moria. I believe they heard us. haha I just got Machima, so I’ll need time with it first to determine if it makes the list but good mention!
@@DieNische I'm loving Machina Arcana right now. Fun tactical crawl with a very unique feel. With the recently released player aids and a designer that seems to always be online answering edge case questions, I've found it easy to learn and get into.
@@DieNische I would say no moreso than most of the games on this list, but YMMV. I'm sure Adam's future playthrough will nail all rules and explain everything perfectly. 😉
I adore dungeon crawlers but nowadays try to just get (and stick with) one for every genre/theme. These are my top games: Heroic Fantasy: Descent 2nd Ed. (better campaign than Gloomhaven, haven't gotten my Middara yet and never tried S&S or D&D series) Horror (Noir): Mansions of Madness 2nd Ed. (way more immersive and variety than Cthulhu May Die, Deep Madness or Claustrophobia) (Gothic) Superhero: Hellboy: The Board Game (why is there no Marvel dungeon crawl yet? Don't care for Street Masters' mod. deck system) Pirates: Skull Tales: Full Sail! (with an incredible amount of content and an awesome 3-stage gameplay 'sail/explore/spend treasure') Japan (Edo era): Okko Chronicles (awesome visual style w. samurais, ninjas, and monsters - based on the excellent horror comic book 'Okko' so tons of expansion potential) Western: Shadows of Brimstone (I really dislike the 'arcade mode' so I play this with the campaign/scenario-styled HexCrawl for sure) Steampunk: Machina Arcana (component quality is great - although it is a standee game, and the tension/difficulty is great) Viking: none yet, but waiting to see what Awaken Realms will do with the upcoming 'Hel' Best RPG-to-boardgame: Folklore: the Affliction (seriously and maybe the ONLY successful translation with TONS of story immersion) Adam, if you did a playthrough of Skull Tales or Okko, you'd make me a happy gamer, but I eagerly await others that you may or may not have reviewed and are coming out in 2020, like Solomon Kane (March?), Etherfields (March), Assassin's Creed (June), Trudvang Legends (my first CMON!), Isofarian Guard, Oathsworn, Arkeis (Steampunk/Egypt!), Aeon Trespass and Chronicles of Drunagor. Although those last six won't arrive until late 2020/beginning of 2021. In any case, I'll be there...rolling solo!!
As much as I love Gloomhaven I'm a lil scared things will fall off a bit with Frosthaven and Jaws. I'm sure I'LL enjoy them but I wonder if it's too much too quickly.
Tough to say. Gloomhaven certainly has staying power. Looking forward to whether it can improve on itself in a couple areas I find that we’re lacking. We shall see!
Gloomhaven has a big box expansion in the works according to Board Game geek, he is apparently hiring a story writer to flesh out the story better compared to the first part of the game. Don't know when this will happen though. Maybe if it goes on Kickstarter they will flesh out the problems with original Gloomhaven in a secound edition.
@@CheddahSlammer The "Big Box Expansion" is literally a whole new game on the scale of Gloomhaven maybe a little bigger, called Frosthaven. Wow I didn't know he hired a story writer maybe that's very nice, I loved the light fantasy writing in the original :) I mean there;s like 4-5 Editions of Original Gloomhaven, Frosthaven is gonna be on kickstarter aswell while Jaws of the Lion is a standalone with 4 classes you can add to your pool of classes for Frost/Gloomhaven, meant to be simpler and easier for people to get into. Frosthaven is set to release around this time next year with Jaws releasing Septemberish this year so far.
Congrats both you and your wife! I’m so looking forward to that KDM showcase, (bought a second hand copy of the core and all the expansions) but is expected that you have some busy months ahead. I’m 35 scenarios in playing Gloomhaven solo (love love love it!) and I’d like to wrap it up before getting into KDM, 7th continent or Tainted Grail...! :)
Thanks Manu! I’d really like to put that together in the future. We’ll see how it goes. No promises with a new one coming very soon. That’s a good number of scenarios through Gloomhaven! Cheers
Another constructive criticism, I don't knwo if these videos are optimized for mobile, especially when in 'browsing mode' (phone held upright). All the text is so tiny... I cannot read a single word, not even the title of the game on the page. Also, a lot of screen real estate is lost on the sides (left, right, top) Maybe zoom by 200% and crop everything that's not in the central area?
Good feedback! I’ve actually been working on that recently. The next one is zoomed in quite a bit more to remove the access stuff. The video space on a phone when in browsing mode isn’t the best way to view a video. I’d recommend a horizontal position always for videos. Cheers!
Top ten that I own/will own 1. Descent 2nd edition 2. Imperial Assault 3. Reichbusters: Projekt Vril 4. Ninja Turtles City Fall/Change is Constant. 5. Batman The Animated series 6. Marvel United 7. OrcQuest Warpath 8. Solomon Kane 9. Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay 10. Oathsworn: Into the Deepwoods. Besides the first which got me into boardgame "Dungeon Crawls" the rest I've either not played or played very little of. Oathsworn may not be considered a "dungeon crawl" to some hence it being low on the list.
Strange that you have games in your top that you don't own yet (so you can't possibly tell if they play well). But...ok. Let's say it's your top 10 in terms of expectations then.
@@bachirmessaouri4772 guess I was just trying to fill up a top ten. I’m still waiting on Oathsworn, Solomon Kane, OrcQuest WarPath and Arkeis. I’ve seen play-thrus of Oathsworn and Solomon Kane. Marvel United I’ve played since and is definitely not a “Dungeon Crawler”, I’m not sure why it made the list.
I certainly think so currently! Tainted Grail isn’t a dungeon crawler by my definition. It’s in the adventure game boat along with 7th Continent. Both are fantastic! :)
“Dungeon crawl or crawler” is certainly a broad term but I believe it hits these three keys found in them. * Dungeon: Either procedural, random, or preset through a scenario or campaign. * Dynamic Hero Characters or Items: Gaining XP and /or upgrading skills. Thank you for your list. I personally am more on the Gloomhaven side still cause I don't mind knowing what I'm up against in advance, it reduces my stress level as an occasional player. KDM I like watching but would never buy due to the sheer gruesomeness, and Cthulu is just not a theme I want to get into. Great hopes for Chronicles of Drunagor and the new Sword and Sorcery in 2021 (still have to play this base game lying around here. And the Hellboy game too...). And still sad I missed out on the Folklore the Affliction bargain offer at Essen Spiel 2019 arriving one day too late... 😠
Nothing wrong with that. Gloomhaven is still a great experience. Best bang for buck on the market still! Couple of obvious overlooked things detract from it over time but I’ve enjoyed it a lot! CDMD is really fun but not every theme jives. :) Folklore is great. You should have another chance to grab it in a future KS. The support is strong for it thus far!
I zoomed in to 150%. I looked into that plugin you mentioned and it asks for access to permissions to read and write my personal information. Big nope for something that’s just supposed to magnify a picture. Any other suggestions I’ll gladly take for the future. Cheers!
@@RollingSolo It was not I that recommended any plugin. However, it was I that told you about Ctrl+scrolling in, past the adverts, to make the screen/topic on the screen larger. I forget the shortcut to remove the address bar on top, but all these are listed for Google and FF browsers. Because, why give away free advertisement and having the pictures you are showing being a mere 10% of the screen. It's been a few years since I recorded a webpage, but I did zoom in on the browser while recording. Other than this, I REALLY ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS.
Hi, thanks for this video ! Giving good insight on some games I do not know very well, probably because I am French and some of them are not yet available in French and less widely distributed than in the US.I am looking for an advice here.I play solo but also more and more trying to find a game, type adventure/dungeon crawler game playable with my son of almost 12 years old.Playable means accessible in terms of rules and with a theme not too creepy (so I will rule out Kingdom Death Monster from your comments in the video) and maybe also playable in 2h or 2h30 per scenario or game. It can be a campaign game or not, no matter. We already have Star Wars Imperial Assault with few expansions and we clearly love it but I am thinking in finding something else, maybe in medieval fantastic universe but not necessarily.I spotted Mage Knight but which seems quite complicated in terms of rules (by the way where would you place it in your top there : 11 or 12 or 30 something?).From your video and my expectations, Cthulhu Death May Die seems to be a good choice.Do you see any others, even if not in this Top 10?
I think Sword & Sorcery, Cthulhu: Death May Die, Zombicide (any version but newer are better). Adventure games like Too Many Bones, 7th Continent, The City of Kings, Fallout The Board Game (w/ New California expansion), Thunderstone Quest. Hope that helps!
Great video as always :-) Still waiting on my Sword & Sorcery (Ancient Chronicles). Agree on C:DMD, it is so Fun. Own the entire list (you and I have similar tastes).
1) Gloomhaven 2) Middara: Unintentional Malum - Act 1 3) Kingdom: Death Monster 4) Shadows of Brimstone 5) Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress 6) Mansions of Madness 2E 7) Cthulhu: Death May Die 8) Tainted Grail 9) Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2E 10) Star Wars: Imperial Assault
Great list Adam. My top 8 are: 1. LotR: JiMe 2. Star Wars: Imperial Assault 3. Descent: JitD 4. Folklore: The Affliction 5. Gloomhaven 6. Dungeons and Dragons Board games (I have 3 of them) 7. Sword and Sorcery 8. Mansions of Madness
No sci-fi solo dungeon crawlers? I really like board games like Space Hulk and am busy painting up models for Blackstone Fortress but it's taking me a long time. I have Fallout The Board Game but IMO it has it's problems for solo play, a few house rules required.
Yeah, I've only tried it solo, and the feeling I was left with was that I would love it with 2 or more. I felt I was always looking up different rules. Wished I had someone to ask 'how does this work again?'
Interesting! I enjoy being able to take it at your own pace solo especially in those situations where a second player might be napping while rules are being checked haha
Sure could! You can pack so much more location based content in the box. Typically dungeon crawlers have 8-10 large tiles worth in the box. Using Folklores thinner style you could cram 50+ location tiles in a box (spit balling here of course). But someone will do this to a large scale at some point, it’s just a matter of time. :)
I like your list! My only exception is Folklore...really dissapointed on the combat, shame how the game break my hype and make me hate the gameplay. Incredably luck based, if your bad with your rolling, there is no mitigation or strategy that can realisticly help you. On rolling D100 having +1/2/3 mitigation with better weapon, etc is a drop in the ocean.
Rolling Solo Shadows of Brimstone, fun to play and each scenario can be played in 1-2 hours. Actually I heard about it from you :) Now I am hyped to play Machina Arcana, just reading the rulebook :) Do you know it? Should be good for solo play!
You inclusion of Folklore and Middara makes me think the combat system has to only be "good enough" as minimum for you and the campaign needs to be good. I don't own either (I backed both at the $1 level and the left it at that) but I hear a lot about both having very swingy combat- something I really struggle with. This is just to show I need non swingy combat and that I think I did right with those 2, not that you are wrong or that they are bad games (all those pointing out the combat still thought they were great games). Also a campaign system with character and story development is important to me- I am basically trying to relive my 1970s D&D fun but without a D&D group nowadays.
Hey KC! I very much enjoy immersion and narrative as a drive to want to play a game again after the first time. Mechanically a game can be well design but give yo no reason to return. Like a good movie or book, sometimes there are elements you many not like within and it may not play out exactly as you’d like. To me, imperfections don’t mean a game shouldn’t be a fav. Every game has them. I play both of those for the game world, immersion, story telling and memorable events. I’ve certainly seen better combat systems. I find Folklore the weak one of the list. Not the same as Middara in comparison. If you’re looking for great combat systems than I have a number of others on the list that hit that criteria better for you :)
@@RollingSolo Money is the problem to some degree- games in shops are more £40 to £60 but kickstarters are more like £110 to 140 (I have never bought the extras/expansions on kickstarter as then you higher still)- yes you get more but for a lot more. I have and enjoy Cescent 2ns Ed (with app), have Gloomhaven 1st Ed but no one willing to play (will try solo someday), Tainted Grail on order and Altar Quest (which my group should enjoy). JiME is a maybe.
That’s a fantastic pile of games and I completely agree that the cost of KS games is aggressive at times. I think the key is to find balance and try to avoid buying similar experiences. Something that’s easier to say and tougher to do!
I'm telling you, this is one game that is worth the miniature assembly. This game paired with the Hexcrawl variant is second to none for board games. Another way to get around that is to purchase an assemble bundle. There are many second hand lots out there. Cheers!
Gloomhaven is not exactly a coop game! It's a Free-For-All show of greed! Since players are mercenaries and loots aren't shared, plus they all have their own scenario agenda to fulfill, it's way too common to see a player do nothing but run around picking up every gold pieces on the ground, looting every chests, or only focus on gaining most EXP by doing EXP-granting actions that doesn't necessarily help the situation. If you play with the same group of players, eventually people will start noticing that behavior and everyone will begin to act greedily to counter-play that particular player. The game just goes downward into a spiral of selfish craphole. IMO, Gloomhaven is an absolutely HORRENDOUS game to play multiplayer. The more people you invite to your game, the shittier the experience will be for you. Fun is a very subjective term and experience, so greedy players will find it fun to hoard everything while watching everyone else squirm as part of their "fun experience". If you call that person out, you will not only offend that person, but possibly making everyone else feeling awkward for the rest of the gaming session. I thought Gloomhaven was a 10/10 game, but all those negative experience with how the rule of greed is played out, I think I would prefer to play this game solo or on PC Steam when it's finalized.
We have made it a house rule that all gold is shared and divided fairly at the end (we removed the hidden quest objective where you cannot loot). Usually it is just split in four, unless one person contributed a lot more to the outcome of the scenario. Instead of a band of greedy mercenaries, we consider ourselves a diverse band of comrades/partners each with our own reason for staying with the group and working together to survive. You could argue it makes the game easier for certain characters and makes loot-focused cards/characters more useless, but we felt that it would have been more unfair in general otherwise.
I've played a lot of them. I appreciated Mansions of Madness, Death May Die & Gloomhaven of course. I didn't like KDM, 'cause too much time happened something like: roll a die, check the table: bad roll? You die. That's not for me. So far, my favourite dungeon crawler remains Darkligh: Memento Mori.
Great choice! I honestly bounce between a handful of games depending on my mood at the time. I plan to do a Top X List in the near future. So stay tuned for that! 😄👍🏼
Not a fan of BGG and definitely not a fan of reviews based upon the BGG community or anything promoting their brand. Would rather see your personal reviews and collection, rather than looking at BGG’s awful and carefully regulated and biased website.
Thanks for your feedback. This is my list and simply using the major board game hub in order to show the games easily in those case. I also don’t do reviews. 😉
@@RollingSolo I enjoy several of mentioned games, just not with the app. I see it as a sad thing...the digital perversion of board games...I love that board games are exactly non-digital. :)

Where is Legends Untold ? :)
Is Nemesis and Tainted Grail on the #11 and #12 spot?
Of all these BG's, your ten and the two I mentioned, it's Nemesis I really wanna jump in and play.
And everyone I know "understands the game", just mention "Aliens" and they are ready to go.
Good question, both aren't dungeon crawlers. They fall into the Adventure Game category for me :)
This is a great list. I’ve watched most of your solo plays of these games. I highly recommend those videos to anyone wondering if these games are right for them, especially since some of these games get pretty expensive. Also, watching the setup videos before reading the instructions makes everything that much easier.
Hey Ryan! Very kind of you. Always good to hear the videos are helpful! Cheers
Great list.
Every time Folklore comes up, it's rarely mentioned that this board game also comes with a campaign creation toolkit meaning there's a lot of quality user generated content out there, not counting the free campaigns released as pdf by the publlisher on the road.
It really deserves praise for how immersive and memorable the story and events are. Good to know the user generate content is strong for it!
Sounds like perfect timing for you! ;)
I think you made a great choice. DMD was my surprise hit of 2019. I hoped it would be good but they nailed it and did some different from other H. P. Lovecraft games. Plus it’s the quickest to setup and play of the entire list which is a huge plus.
Very good video. Much effort put into it not just talking about games but also showing stuff. And I like your list.
Thanks Andre! Had fun putting it together.
Thanks for this fantastic overview of all these games. I love solo dungeon crawlers, Journeys in middle earth sounds quite interesting. Might give that a try!
There’s a new expansion coming soon! Look for news on the cover art leak ;)
Gandalf, The Balrog and Mines of Moria perhaps?
Great list. I was excited to see Midarra made your top 10. I can't wait to receive my copy of the reprint. It looks awesome!
That shipment is going to bend the floor boards haha
This channel's lists are by far my favourite! :D
That’s super kind of you! :D
Excellent list Adam. So many great choices for dungeon crawler fans.
Thanks for watching Jason!
Congrats on the new baby boy coming! Thanks for the videos. They are great!
Thanks Michael! Super excited :D
Great work as always. Thanks for the detailed info on all these wonderful games. Congrats to you and your family. All the best.
Hey hey! You bet. Thanks for checking it out. Very excited and it’s just a matter of time now! :)
Solid choices there! We share similar thoughts on the games you mentioned. Cheers!
Thanks for the great list and on the spot comments. Congrats to the family for the new baby! you wont roll solo for long man, you'll have little players before you know it!
Appreciate that! I’m going to need to create sub channels in a few years haha ;p
Great list! Watched your 2018 list and then discovered this video. So now I watched them both 😁
Just discovered your channel - but love your videos. Just subscribed. Thanks for putting out this awesome content!
Hey! Welcome to the channel. 😄👍🏼
Glad to have you here and hope to see you around. Cheers!
One of my favorite parts of Middara is the red reader to help keep you from seeing things you shouldn't.
That decoder is awesome. Every game with hidden information NEEDS it or some variation of it. :)
So glad I went all in on Folklore. Good to hear you like it as well!
It’s a great game. Can’t wait for Fall of the Spire!
Even if you don't like JRPGs, the best thing about Middara is that it is a refreshing escape from all things Orcs and Trolls, and shows that it is possible to produce an awesome miniatures game that doesn't rely on 'dark and disturbing'.
Exactly! A fresh take and vibe. I enjoyed that!
When it got to 2 and there was no KD:M, I got sad and thought it fell off the list, but you pulled a M. Night Shamalan plot twist and moved it up instead!
Muhaha! Yes it has. King of hill currently!
Some go up and some go down ;D
I sold my Kingdom Death copy. Showdowns were repetitive and involved too much luck (dice rolls). One tactic, attack from behind. It`s a great looking game, for sure. Thx for your list!
Hey Tom! Certainly won’t be everyone’s #1. What’s your top dungeon crawler currently? :)
@@RollingSolo Well, I play a lot of war games like Conflict of Heroes or Enemy Action: Ardennes. Dungeons...Zombicide Black Plague or Deep Madness. But the top game for me right now is Space Core. Cheers!
That’s how I ended up feeling about KD:M as well.
I'm glad to hear that! ;D
I think I may need to do a revised version of this list. Might be time for that! Oathsworn would 100% be on the list as this point. Sorry for the late reply but if you're eyeing that one I recommend it!
Thanks for the awesome list! Congrats to you and your wife!
Thanks Nick! :D
Was interesting to read :)
I put KDM in the dungeon crawler boat due to it meeting the three main criteria of a dungeon crawler.
I am glad we 100% agree what No. 1 is.
Me too. I can unlock my doors again and sleep easy ;p
So happy to see Shadows of Brimstone still on the list :D I was thinking to jump into the folklore Kickstarter last year but I did the Brimstone one instead
SoB is a fantastic choice. You’ll have a blast. Check out HEXcrawl and the Mine Blast campaign. Cheers!
Looking at starting SoB...
Do I start with City of Ancients, or Forbidden Fortress, or something else?! Thanks
Thanks Doug. Great to hear they are reprinting CotA and SoD with new minis. I used to live in Japan so FF will be a fun place to start!
I’d say go after a one shot type game based on what you have coming to you. IA or CDMD is the ticket!
Cheers!
Very interesting thank you and congratulations for the new addition to your family
Thanks Sean! Could be any time now :)
I got and love D100 Dungeon Mapping game with books by Martin Knight!
Very nice! 👏🏼
Great list! Mad props.
Thanks Sebastien! :D
Where does Nemesis rank on your Dungeon Crawl List? I was a bit surprised it didn’t make your top 10.
Nemesis is super high for me. I love the game. It’s an adventure game rather than a dungeon crawler . :)
Great video! Curious, what is your preferred number of characters to run with for each game when playing solo?
Great list. For 2019, Cthulhu death may die was the biggest surprise hit.
Absolutely agree! It was exactly that for me in 2019. I hope they make more for the game in the future!
If you guys had to rank the quality of the miniatures for your top DC games what would you say?
Hey Arman! The only DC based miniature game I have is Batman Gotham City Chronicles. So I can’t do much ranking but the minis are very nice in that one. :)
Rolling Solo haha. Sorry about that. Meant DC = dungeon crawler. I’ve heard good things about Batman though.
Ohhhhhh that makes so much more sense now haha
Kingdom Death is top of the crop. Cool Mini or Not is way up there. Fallout Wasteland Warfare from Modiphius has very nice resin miniatures. Those are probably my top three. 👌🏼
Where do you stand on Aeons trespass? The theme grabs me but the idea of such a large time investment pushes me away.
Great List
Thanks Thomas! 😁
It seems a lot of dungeon crawlers are kind of expensive. Anyone know of any good inexpensive ones?
Hello Travis! That may be a good list in the future. 🙂
They most certainly are in that broad category from my perspective.
Didn’t mean to ruin your day
E Lowe Your dog is ugly.
I love Order of Vampire Hunters, Fireteam Zero and very much looking forward to the solo-able version of Okko Chronicles and Assassins Creed.
Nice choices there Alex! ;)
Great list. I would love to see a Shadows of Brimstone playthrough.
Hey Charles! Would really like to pull that off in the future. Would be a lot of fun. We see what I can swing this year.
Great list! But is it really fair to call KDM a dungeon crawler when there's no dungeon or exploration piece to the game? It's more a civilization builder and tactical battle game in my opinion? Still very interested to try it out though...
Find or buy items and/or gain loot.

He would really like Gloomhaven from the campaign standpoint and D&D. DMD is one to keep any eye on as it’s a great one shot game anytime. Cheers!
I'm new to hobby boardgames. Don't quite understand what kickstarter is or how it works though. Many of the games I see reviews for turn out to be unavailable or very expensive. Interesting video though there are so many games it's almost impossible to know where to start.
All of them are available outside of Kickstarter at this point. Minus Folklore I think. So that’s a plus!
Great questions! :)
Cool list! The Dungeon Dive approves. ;)
Hey! Thanks, it was fun to put together. Cheers!
I'd like to see in cost taken into consideration (e.g. MIddara costs a fuck ton)
It certainly isn't a cheap one. But just the base game alone is enough content to focus on!
Hmm I was never sold into mansion of madness. That all dependence of the app makes the game almost playable without the game itself...
Cheers!
That's actually not true at all. Most of the game takes place with the physical components.
@@TheDungeonDive I have to watch anothet playthrough
Does Tainted Grail count as a DC?
I like it ;)
I’m also looking forward to the new content from Folklore. Such a cool setting!
KDM will be around for the long haul. Trading is always a possibility as well. Local board game FB groups are good for that!
@@RollingSolo Agreed! Fall of the Spire looks awesome, only 10 short months away :( In that time I might even finish Middara (probably not)
You just might! ;)
SOB - Mine Cart backer - Own everything else to date as well... I still haven't played it. I swear I will one day!
haha It’s a bigger monster than anything on this list if you own it all. But the possibilities are endless!
Maybe the new Secrets of the lost Station will be more popular and (Hopefully!) equally good. ;)
Machina Arcana is worth a mention as well as Perdition's Mouth.
I believe they heard us. haha
I just got Machima, so I’ll need time with it first to determine if it makes the list but good mention!
@@RollingSolo Beware: The rulebook is a mess. ;)
@@DieNische I'm loving Machina Arcana right now. Fun tactical crawl with a very unique feel. With the recently released player aids and a designer that seems to always be online answering edge case questions, I've found it easy to learn and get into.
@@coreymayo8321 According to all the questions that arise in different forums/groups, it is obvious that the rules are a mess.
@@DieNische I would say no moreso than most of the games on this list, but YMMV. I'm sure Adam's future playthrough will nail all rules and explain everything perfectly. 😉
I adore dungeon crawlers but nowadays try to just get (and stick with) one for every genre/theme. These are my top games:
Heroic Fantasy: Descent 2nd Ed. (better campaign than Gloomhaven, haven't gotten my Middara yet and never tried S&S or D&D series)
Horror (Noir): Mansions of Madness 2nd Ed. (way more immersive and variety than Cthulhu May Die, Deep Madness or Claustrophobia)
(Gothic) Superhero: Hellboy: The Board Game (why is there no Marvel dungeon crawl yet? Don't care for Street Masters' mod. deck system)
Pirates: Skull Tales: Full Sail! (with an incredible amount of content and an awesome 3-stage gameplay 'sail/explore/spend treasure')
Japan (Edo era): Okko Chronicles (awesome visual style w. samurais, ninjas, and monsters - based on the excellent horror comic book 'Okko' so tons of expansion potential)
Western: Shadows of Brimstone (I really dislike the 'arcade mode' so I play this with the campaign/scenario-styled HexCrawl for sure)
Steampunk: Machina Arcana (component quality is great - although it is a standee game, and the tension/difficulty is great)
Viking: none yet, but waiting to see what Awaken Realms will do with the upcoming 'Hel'
Best RPG-to-boardgame: Folklore: the Affliction (seriously and maybe the ONLY successful translation with TONS of story immersion)
Adam, if you did a playthrough of Skull Tales or Okko, you'd make me a happy gamer, but I eagerly await others that you may or may not have reviewed and are coming out in 2020, like Solomon Kane (March?), Etherfields (March), Assassin's Creed (June), Trudvang Legends (my first CMON!), Isofarian Guard, Oathsworn, Arkeis (Steampunk/Egypt!), Aeon Trespass and Chronicles of Drunagor. Although those last six won't arrive until late 2020/beginning of 2021. In any case, I'll be there...rolling solo!!
Hey Marcel! Enjoyed reading that. Stay tuned for a list you will likely enjoy in the future :)
Congratulations on new little one to your family
Thanks Nathan! Any time now :)
@@Rincewindl I didn't know those comments he made were about Frost haven.
Also, a lot of screen real estate is lost on the sides (left, right, top)
Maybe zoom by 200% and crop everything that's not in the central area?
Good feedback! I’ve actually been working on that recently. The next one is zoomed in quite a bit more to remove the access stuff. The video space on a phone when in browsing mode isn’t the best way to view a video. I’d recommend a horizontal position always for videos. Cheers!
Top ten that I own/will own
1. Descent 2nd edition
2. Imperial Assault
3. Reichbusters: Projekt Vril
4. Ninja Turtles City Fall/Change is Constant.
5. Batman The Animated series
6. Marvel United
7. OrcQuest Warpath
8. Solomon Kane
9. Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay
10. Oathsworn: Into the Deepwoods.
Besides the first which got me into boardgame "Dungeon Crawls" the rest I've either not played or played very little of. Oathsworn may not be considered a "dungeon crawl" to some hence it being low on the list.
This coming year has some serious Top 10 contenders that’s for sure! :)
The Bear Have you played Wander yet? Do you like it?
I bought it to replace Mice and Mystics for my boys. Only played it once so far and it’s good, just maybe more complex then Mice and Mystics.
Kingdom death is the best for sure, Wait for wave 3 this year. And tainted grail slowly ascend my list too :D
I certainly think so currently! Tainted Grail isn’t a dungeon crawler by my definition. It’s in the adventure game boat along with 7th Continent. Both are fantastic! :)
@@RollingSolo Agree, but is KDM a dungeon crawler? I'll let it pass :)
Find or buy items and/or gain loot.
* Monsters or an Entity: Villain and/or enemies that are meant to stop you or prevent you from succeeding (AI or another player character).
Folklore is great. You should have another chance to grab it in a future KS. The support is strong for it thus far!
....and you still don't zoom in on the webpage
No City of Kings? I've got the extra 100 quest cards to make this game so much re play. This was a great list.
Hey! Unfortunately only picking ten causes some to be squeezed out. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks Thomas! :) Looking forward to the new content for S&S as well!
1) Gloomhaven
2) Middara: Unintentional Malum - Act 1
3) Kingdom: Death Monster
4) Shadows of Brimstone
5) Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress
6) Mansions of Madness 2E
7) Cthulhu: Death May Die
8) Tainted Grail
9) Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2E
10) Star Wars: Imperial Assault
I really need to try Blackstone Fortress!
@@RollingSolo - Would like to see you do Blackstone Fortress, too!
I’ll keep my eye open for it. No promises on a playthrough but I’m intrigued! :)
Great list Adam. My top 8 are:
1. LotR: JiMe
2. Star Wars: Imperial Assault
3. Descent: JitD
4. Folklore: The Affliction
5. Gloomhaven
6. Dungeons and Dragons Board games (I have 3 of them)
7. Sword and Sorcery
8. Mansions of Madness
Hey Kenneth! Seems like we’re very similar taste wise. Nice list 😁
Kenneth Paschall what do you think of how Folklore compares with Descent?
No sci-fi solo dungeon crawlers? I really like board games like Space Hulk and am busy painting up models for Blackstone Fortress but it's taking me a long time. I have Fallout The Board Game but IMO it has it's problems for solo play, a few house rules required.
Imperial Assault is the ticket for a sci fi dungeon crawler. Although other good options are out there as well!
👑💀 is awesome but idk if I'd solo it... it's an amazing game and I love it 2 player.
My list:
Massive Darkness
Zombicide Black Plague/Green Horde
Space Cadets: Away Missions
Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System
Leeroy! Nice list there and thanks for sharing :)
I haven’t played Space Cadets!
@@RollingSolo Thanks. Make sure it's Away Missions, that's the 1-6 player minis based co-op
Roger that! Something to keep my eye out for.
@@RollingSolo I think it's still available. It's pretty obscure.
Excellent!
Middara seems like such a good game. The theme is a pretty big turnoff.
I typically don’t go for that theme but the story and gameplay is too good to ignore. Cheers!
folklore could teach allotta games on how to do tiles right.
Hey Robert! I can understand that. What’s your fav atm? :)
Rolling Solo Shadows of Brimstone, fun to play and each scenario can be played in 1-2 hours. Actually I heard about it from you :)
Now I am hyped to play Machina Arcana, just reading the rulebook :) Do you know it? Should be good for solo play!
Love SoB! Great choice. I received MA recently. Hoping to crack it open in the near future :)
Something that’s easier to say and tougher to do!
its like u knew what i been looking for lol
I’ll log out of your PC now ;p haha
Agree
Thanks for watching Rob! Hope to see you around 😄
Too bad Shadows of Brimstone requires miniature assembly. Not everyone wants to do that, simply because they enjoy board games.
Soloing Gloomhaven seems to fit the bill for you nicely then! Thanks for watching :)
Sounds like you need new friends, lol!
Those are good picks! This list changes every year and also shifts throughout the year. We’ll see where things are at the end of 2020 :)
KDM is number 1... I dont get the Hype of this game. We sold it very quickly.
It’s a great game! It isn’t my number one today but I still enjoy it. :)
@@RollingSolo what is your fav today? i'm going to buy Sword and Sorcery

haha well I hope it helps you if you do watch it ;p

Cool channel, just subscribed. Excited to watch your content. However if I were you I would shave 10 seconds off that intro. Seems a little repetitive
That’s for the feedback and watching! Hope to see you around. :D
KDM is a no for me. The price, availability and some completely juvenile aspects are all turn offs...major turn offs.
I can understand that completely. Fair take!
Apps for board games? NO!
Hey! Thanks for watching. It’s alright to not be interested in a type of game. What’s your fav?
