Could the Ukraine war go nuclear? | The Bottom Line

  • After seven months of all-out war in Ukraine, there seems to be no quick end to the conflict.
Russia controls about 20 percent of the country, despite recent advances by the Ukrainian military, which is supported by Western intelligence gathering and weapons.
The United States is doubling down on the war effort, and so is Russia. Military reservists are being called up for duty, and President Vladimir Putin recently said he was “not bluffing” when he threatened to “make use of all weapon systems available” to defend his country.
Host Steve Clemons asks nuclear policy experts Kori Schake and Jon Wolfstahl about nuclear options and deterrence.

Question: who is final winner of nuclear war? No one, no matter how you arrange the puzzle. It makes sense if every party just pull back from self destruction. Don’t sleep walk into the abyss. This war addiction must stop.

    • @danwylie-sears1134
      @danwylie-sears1134 Год назад

The "winner" of a nuclear war, if one happens, would be any suicidal nihilist who wants humanity to be extinct.
The bigger problem is all the hypothetical nuclear wars, the ones that are threatened but don't happen. Those have winners. A country may be able to win a nuclear confrontation by putting a suicidal nihilist in power, with just barely enough institutional restraints to hold the leader back from killing everyone (but only if other countries capitulate). The only way for humanity as a whole to win that kind of scenario is by convincing all countries that putting such a leader in power is too dangerous, because we can't be trusted to capitulate when threatened by someone who really would kill everyone in the world just for kicks. The more we're committed to not giving in to nuclear extortion, the less likely it is that a country will try it.
Standing up to nuclear extortion is dangerous, if there's any risk that the perpetrator really is suicidal. Capitulating to nuclear extortion is always more so, even when the perpetrator really is suicidal, because the extortion depends on having people in place who can keep the leader from committing omnicide. But Putin is not suicidal. There is absolutely no need to capitulate now.

I never thought I'd see someone advocating for a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO, knowing very well that a nuclear war is the only possible outcome. Putin lept saying the West wanted to use Ukraine to weaken Russia and they always denied it, now they're willing to commit everything, including a nuclear war, to keep weaking Russia - guess who was right and who was lying all along..

Unfortunately the American elites have figured out that they can probably survive "all out" nuclear war if they take certain steps which they have already taken like bunkers in Colorado, second homes in the Southern hemisphere etc etc they've "nuke proofed" their existences (they think) and are wargaming the use of nukes now. There are American generals openly voicing that they feel the damage to society won't be as catastrophic as we imagine and that it might be a risk worth taking.

I suppose Putin's strategy is see if the Germans and other Central Europeans will continue to be so supportive come the winter months with difficulties in staying warm in the winter. Prices and relative economic hardship can be rationalized in a war - near freezing temperatures in your home in February may change the European mindset. I hope the Russian public move against Putin internally first - but with him allowing the leaders of any formidable resistance to his rule to leave the country (similar to what Castro in Cuba did in 1961 in allowing his opponents to leave the country or face imprisonment or execution) means Putin gains an internal political advantage. By Christmas or late December we will see if cold apartments in Central Europe will wear down NATO's resolve or if Putin is feeling the heat at home enough to negotiate.

The problem i have with each reply is that it presupposes that the US and NATO are in fact willing to go to war over the use of nuclear weapons in a non-Western and non-NATO country. That is a major major major assumption. If the US was willing to go down that road, it would have provided long-ranged rockets to Ukraine without worrying about the consequences of escalation since it would then be more important to prevent Putler from achieving his aims than containing the conflict. I fear that the US will fold and force Ukraine to surrender before the launch occurs. Personally I’d like to see Russia completely pushed out of Ukraine but I fear that the western appetite for risk isn’t great enough for that.

There is a reason why the Soviet Union, nor any nuclear power, never launched a first strike (nuclear attack) since Word War 2, despite all of the Cold War fears that the Soviets would. And its because you can't launch a first strike without being annihilated in the second strike. I remember in the 80s when The Day After aired, and everyone hoped the Soviets would see the movie and learn the lesson. Probably not realizing the Soviets can be trusted to act in the best self-interests...which mutually assured destruction is clearly against... and that the Soviets knew this since the 60s, if not the 50s. -- How is it any different today?
Even if Putin had the launch codes (he doesn't), or the ability to order a first strike by himself (he doesn't), even he would know the response is not going to be 'more sanctions'. -- The only way I could fathom Russia using a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, or against any enemy country, is the FSB had a foolproof plan to blame am ISIS terror cell, or rogue Chechen element, or claim the Ukrainians did it in a false-flag conspiracy to frame the Russians. -- But that would require a convincing story on how such an element got the nuclear weapon 'elsewhere', and eliminating everyone involved in the planning and execution. Whatever the case, Russia would need absolute plausible deniability. -- Here's my two cents, if there was really a way to use a nuclear weapon against an enemy without equal repercussions, Russia and China (and the US) would have figured it out a long time ago and did it already.
All NATO must do is take out Moscow and 5 -6 other city's to take out all of Russia.... But Russia must take out city's all over the planet from USA , CANADA ,FRANCE UK. ALL OF EUROPE and as far away as , AUSTRALIA and so on and so on ...
United Kingdom 225 warheads (submarine delivery systems new and up to date systems )
    France 300 warheads
(submarine delivery systems new and up to date systems )
    United States 7,315 warheads
(Mixed delivery systems new and up to date systems )
    Russia 8,000 warheads
(Mixed delivery systems old mostly from the soviet union times NOT up to date systems )
RUSSIA IS AT DISADVANTAGE !!! and they know it Putin's regime knows its and that is why they will not use nukes they will hint and shout about nukes but that's it !!
ON A SIDE NOTE : Missiles require a huge amount of upkeep and if the maintenance that we've seen on Russian captured tanks in Ukriane is anything to go by, or how there nuclear sublime fleet upkeep is I figure half of Russian Missiles would be defect or even blow up on in mid flight ; Any NBC specialist can tell you that they estimate that without extensive maintenance an ICBM has about a 5% per year cumulative failure rate. And mote of Russia ICBMs are form the late 80s early nineties so based on those facts like I say many as much as half of their weapons can end up and would failx.
ALSO ON A 2nd NOTE ; Putin can not just wake up one day and press a button because he wants to when it comes to sending nukes around the world !!!

@Shannon Smith No, the nuclear war would end a lot of people, but it won't end all of us. If it happens between russia and usa (west), which the probability is very high within the next months or years, it would reduce the population of europe and the west in general to around 10%, the southern hemisphere countries (except australia and new zealand) will be heavily affected by famine, but will largely make it through.

Ofcourse, if the innocent southern hemisphere countries are also nuked by the remaining 10% of the population who decide to invade the countries in the south for survival, then that would be a completely different story, but I still think there will be a lot of people remaining since the vast majority of nukes will be used in the west. Even if 10 000 people make it through whatever mess awaits us, it would be enough to repopulate the planet.

Well it's interesting that the MSM loves to report this propoganda. Firstly, as a former combat officer I was shocked to hear Putin say "I'm not bluffing" on "Nukes. Mr. Putin with all due respect if you're going to use Tactical Nukes to obtain an objective you want it to be a surprise and not announce your intentions to the World or your opponents. This gives your enemies time to prepare and preempt your chances of a successful strike. When I planned combat operations I never announced that we are taking Hill 821 for example. I'd be stupid to do that since the enemy can prepare a preemptive response to such data. Secondarily, the use of Tactical Nukes is difficult at best. For example, you'll probably take out your own troops with such a strike. Moreover, the wind direction from Ukraine is toward Russia so any radium fallout will also drift toward Russia. Finally, any use of a Tactical Nuke would pretty much have everyone in the World, including China, India, Russian Republics, and people living in the Donbas react adversely against Russia after such a strike. You will probably dismember Russia which such actions so I don't understand your objective at all. But heck, your entire Invasion scenario has accomplished the opposite. United the EU and NATO. Brought formerly neutral countries into the EU and NATO influence - Sweden and Finland. Your actions also brought Switzerland, who owns the neutrality record in the World, out against Russia. So everything you tried to accomplish has vanished with this Invasion and you're believing your own propoganda.

not only that, transporting the tactical nuke to its target, probably via 2-pilot bomber, which makes it a sitting duck

Comparison raises arrogance. We want peace to reign everywhere but warmongering US government plans and instigates conflicts around the world. My proposal is Western and Eastern Ukraine should become independent sovereign countries. In this case there would likely not be any concerns about neutrality.

@@raidermaxx2324 You're correct! But I suspect that the delivery mechanism will be via missile. However, such a missile may be intercepted with another missile like the Aegis 161 which has a 100% hit ratio.

Please stop calling the prospect of nuclear apocalypse "fascinating."
"Unthinkable" , "unimaginable" , "horrifying" , "terrifying" these are the types of words you're looking for.

Weird that we are on the same level of beginning a nuclear war as we were during the cuban crisis in 1961, still it doesnt get to the headlines...
