Why Armin Is An AMAZING Character.

  • Armin has shown some of the most significant growth out of all the characters in Attack on Titan, and I thought today I'd go into detail on why I think his story arc is great. He struggles with his self-worth and feelings of not being enough, but also strives to beat all of that and prove something to his friends and the rest of the world.

@@marshalsoult3860 i mean, it's hard to make something when your titan can basically nuke everyone around you, so it's needed a certain plan in order to none of his friends get hurt/killed, it's not like eren that can transform and garantee safety for his comrades. And literally none of the original scouts that were not in eren's side did shit in s4, since they had no idea what eren was trying to do and when they got the first view of the plan, eren wouldn't follow it. I’ve loved armin since season 1 and from there if you really payed attention to him, you could see how much he’s grown. Yes maybe he was a bit timid or frail, but he always stood his ground and there’s no denying it. Not once have I ever seen him run away- as you said, he’s always pushing himself even while carrying the heavy burden of the CT and living up to erwins legacy. The majority of the fan base says how in season 4 and the manga he’s been a pushover and that his character is repetitive. They love to slander him failing to realize how much he’s gone through and how much he’s grown emotionally and they put him down. It pisses me off that not many people can see what i do. Armin has always done an amazing job and he’ll always be one of the best. !Manga spoilers below!
As the 15th commander of the survey corps, I think he’ll do just fine. Erwin and Levi had said so themselves. He is not weak, nor is he useless. Thank you so much for explaining his character to those who are blind to him- Sorry for making this so lengthy lol

Ever since the first episode I had a strong feeling I would love Armin’s character. The way he talked to the children who were pinning him, he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind even if he knew the possibility of them beating him up was very high if he spoke up. He was brave, to use his words instead of his fists.
I do think he deserved the serum, and I know almost the entire fandom will think otherwise, but please hear me out. A few episodes before, well, that happened, Erwin himself said, “No, he’s proven himself. He’s one of our greatest weapons.” Because he knows how valuable Armin is with his tactics, quick thinking, and strategic mind. It’ll take you years to find someone like Armin, and yet he is right before you; don’t just throw him away.
Sure, Erwin is the commander, but Armin is just straight up the only reason the Survey Corps is still alive past season 1.
I miss season’s 1-3 when I shipped Eremin for plenty of reasons people turned a blind eye towards, I miss people trying to go against me for loving both Armin and Eremin, I miss obsessing over Armin and trying to explain how useful and marvelous he is.
In the future, I hope to find someone who has noticed Armin’s value as much as I did, and still do.
I’ll miss Armin and Eren’s strong friendship, where they both bonded over the ocean and the outside world, I’ll miss when they were so willing to die for each other, I’ll miss when Armin used to blush around Eren, I’ll miss when Eren was always worried about him, I’ll miss the great friendship they had.
If I had the opportunity to erase my mind from this entire fandom, I would definitely take it. The pain of seeing all their friendships break is unbelievable.

    • @shijutu

These are the reasons to why I love Armin so much. He never used violence instead he used his mind and words to get around things, which shows how kindhearted and special he was. Out of all characters, most used their fists to get around, Armin was bullied and beaten often, I bet that's why he never wanted to do physical fights because he never wanted anybody to feel the same way he did as he received those beatings. Armin immediately became my favorite character because he reminded me so much of myself, especially because I think he suffers from anxiety which I do too. He really proved himself over and over again using his intelligence. I hate to say this, but yes Armin deserved the serum. Armin is much younger than Erwin, Armin's generation IS the future, Erwin was already in his mid 40's. Even if people see him as ''unexperienced'' and a child, he'll be here for the future way longer than Erwin. Even if I loved both characters so much, I felt like Erwin's time was running out and I noticed that after he lost his arm. I never cried a single time in the show expect for the time when I thought they we're going to let Armin die. As for him and Eren, Armin was Eren's first friend.
*MANGA* *SPOILER* I adored their friendship so much and it broke my heart that they never got to really do what they had promised each other. Well... they kinda did but not in that happy way they thought it would be. The hug at the end broke me. They we're like soulmates and they balanced out each other very well. I still get tears in my eyes just thinking about it. Goddamnit that hug destroyed me.

@Creepy Armin Arlert Ugh, I don't want to spoil anything but they butchered Armin's character so bad later on in the time skip and sadly he isn't the only character they messed up, he along with many other characters we're ruined :(
I love both Erwin and Armin, they are great characters but you're not going to like what actions Armin's going to take next. Now, honestly if I could choose, I'd chose to not kill either one of them, both are great. Although I feel terrible for Hange and especially Levi. He was Levi's host. But then again, if Armin we're to die, I'd feel terrible for his friends.
Anyways, I'll remember Armin as what he was before. One positive thing about Erwin's death is that he never lived long enough to get messed up my Isayama's writing at the end, while Armin on the other hand lived long enough to get, as I said messed up along with many other characters.

Armin is one of my most favorite characters in AOT.
To be honest, when I first watched AOT up to season 3, just like others, I did not pay much attention on Armin's character. Even, in the choice situation, I was on the side of Erwin...
But when I re-watched AOT, my perspective regarding Armin is completely changed and Armin becomes one of my favorite.
Up to season 3, Armin was presented as a physically weak character, he is not as strong as Mikasa, does not posses any special titan power as Eren, but still he refuses to run away even at the verge of death, he is truly "the bravest one"....
Apart from this, Armin's character has a great thematic importance in the story, mainly, after the ocean scene. Armin had experienced the same cruel world as Eren, but he never carries hatred for any one, not even for his enemies. That's why at the end of season3 (at the ocean scene), when Eren was thinking about killing all the enemies outside the walls, Armin holding a seashell represents a more hopeful future.
Even at the end of the story, he betrays his own homeland just to protect a lots strangers of the outside world. He knows it very well ,just as Eren, that they "all are same" , and that's why he fights for them. unlike Eren, he never chased after freedom, in fact, he thinks that "enjoying the little detours of life to its fullest" is also something that can also be called as freedom. where Eren always chases after freedom, Armin is able to feel it. That's why Armin is the person who "can go beyond the walls" and just as Eren says "can became the most freest person in the world."
(Don't take it otherwise, but I compare Armin and Eren as both of them possessed completely contrasting personalities and ideologies. I like both of them)

I feel exactly the same about Armin and Eren and their respective take on freedom, and that's why I've always preferred Armin as a character. The ocean scene, with the two of them experiencing it in complete opposite ways, was spot on. I knew that from there on, they would have grown apart for good. And when Armin talks with Zeke about purpose in life and he says about the three of them just running on that hill... That was very touching.

The most pivital scene for Armin's character to me is when Armin and Eren first met. Eren asks, "why don't you fight back?". And Armin responds, "I did/I didn't lose because I never ran away." To me, "I never ran away" is the essence of his character, the never-ending curiosity that humanity shows - making us advance in research, technology, culture, expanding our world, even when faced with incredible challenges and opposition. Armin has shown strategic abilities that rival Erwin, which I could go into detail of why I believe Armin would outshine Erwin in the new world. On top of that, his character, as the latest season shows, differs from Eren's philosophy in that Armin repeatedly tries the route of diplomacy and negotiation. Repeatedly. Again and again in the face of literally every type of enemy, he's always tried to find the option with the least bloodshed.
I freaking love Armin, and I think for plot reasons he will either thwart Eren and be in the final survivors (I'm following the manga only up to the anime). Or Armin has to die if Eren has his way with the world, unfortunately. But I think plot makes better sense that Eren stops or else the people he wants to protect will perish. Idk how tho lol.
Anyways tl;dr Armin embodies the uncontainable curiosity of humanity while retaining the innocence of said curiosity even in the face of seemingly impossible oppositions (always opting to try the path of diplomacy and least bloodshed first). He is the bestest of bois, I would get eaten for him 😤
Ps. Inoue Marina is also top tier incredible VA

I always like an underdog character growing in a show. But Armin's my favourite.
    - Starts off always doubting himself and even hating himself, and isn't the most brave against the titans.
    - Ends up saving many lives with his plans, saving his friends with bravery (literally putting himself between cannons and rifles to diffuse the situation). Sacrificed himself twice to stop awful things from happening. And ultimately gets with Annie, is the youngest head of the scouts then jumps out that plane first like a leader.
My favourite thing was how he made Annie & Eren both feel better through empathy and telling them he's as bad - he's claimed many lives.

Ok, here's my little explanation about why I love Armin so much. The thing is I actually see myself reflected on him very strongly.
    (This will get personal hehe)
Growing up I was always "weak" I was short, skinny and fragile I would always be the first one to get injured or sick doing litterally anything, I'd say I spent my entire childhood in the hospital. But not only was I weak phisically but also mentally, I was so concerned of other's opinion about me. If someone told me I wasn't good enough, I'd take that as the only truth. I was also bullied at school for being "weird" some girls in elementary even went as far as to throw me inside the bathroom and hold the door so I couldn't get out while they were all laughing at me, calling me names and saying that they were going to beat me up (very traumatizing experience)
All of this made me think so low of myself, I thought that I was just "too weak" for life, I felt like my life was completely worthless, that I was just a burden to evryone, sometimes I even though that I shouldn't be here in the first place (Wich now I realize it's not true, and I feel so sorry for my younger self because no one should feel that way). I'm now a young adult and I know my worth I've taught myself to embrace my qualities. I might not be strong, but I am resilient and I can use my experiences to push myself forward.
The point is, I cry so much whenever Armin believes or says he's worthless, it reminds me a lot of my younger self and I just wanna hug him so bad, because I know that feeling. He might be a fictional character, but I feel like real people like me go through similar experiences as he does (except that we don't have to fight titans, fortunately) and seeing representation like this on a show makes me so happy. I think it teaches people to know that they're worth something and that we can all be important in our own unique way.

[Titan-filled wall of text ahead. Ending spoilers from third paragraph on]
He's always been one of my favorites. I remember reading his sacrifice in retaking Shiganshina when that chapter came out and that was one of the very few times up to that point where I was actually really sad about a character dying. Following something as it's released instead of binging it really strengthens the feeling of closeness to the characters, it would seem.
That turned into the first time I was actually really _anxious_ over a character when Serumbowl happened, lol.
Also, I think I figured out one aspect of how the story would end when the 13-year rule was first described because of Armin. Basically, I figured that the Power of the Titans would have to vanish (as opposed to a complete downer ending or just all Titans being killed while the Power remained or something) because Armin was, IMO, extremely unlikely to die an unnatural death after Serumbowl.
When I was still following Game of Thrones (since it wasn't complete shit yet lol), I realized that, after his resurrection, Jon Snow was basically safe for the rest of the show. Bringing a character back after killing him so dramatically only to kill him again later would not work unless the death and resurrection had happened much earlier in the show. Granted, "things working" in GoT seemed to stop mattering after awhile, but apparently even D&D got this.
I figured on similar grounds that Isayama wouldn't have Armin get a second chance at life - particularly considering the extremely brutal way he nearly died and when in the story it happened - only to kill him for real later, be it by the 13-year rule or by some other means earlier.
Eren wasn't as safe, I thought, because his fake death in Trost was (relatively) less brutal, it happened way earlier, Eren nearly dying didn't affect him as much as nearly dying did for Armin, and, perhaps most importantly, because of the nature of the consequences these near-deaths.
In Eren's case, the consequence was more that he unlocked his power. With Armin, though he too gains his power, the focus was on him living up to Erwin's legacy and justifying his survival. Armin's arc, I thought, therefore relied much more on him surviving.
If Armin were to die for real afterwards for any reason _but_ the 13-year rule, one would have to consider the possibility that Erwin wouldn't have died if he had been chosen and put in the same position. This, depending on how this might have gone, might have served as some final sign that Levi was truly wrong to pick Armin, and this happening would be unlikely to be good for the plot at all IMO. The character arc Armin had post-Serumbowl would probably feel like it was pointless.
The 13-year rule killing Armin rather than something else seemed equally unlikely, as, though I figured at least one of the two might die (since both were now fated to, unless something changed), I thought that Eren was more likely for the reasons I stated above. It was too unlikely for both to die, as it seemed too dark even for AoT, went against one of Eren's main goals (to save both Armin and Mikasa), and it would be too cruel to Mikasa to leave her _completely_ alone.
So, I thought, the Power of the Titans would have to be removed from the world at the end - or that at the very least the 13-year rule would be broken - because that would be the final guarantee for Armin surviving, which, because of everything I've said here, seemed like the way things would go.

Armin hands down is the reason they are able to succeed in the end. He’s the one who sees what is in front of him-the beauty of the world. Eren is a nihilist, looking to the danger on the horizon and only thinking in the binary terms of kill or be killed. But Armin appreciates life despite the cage they lived in, despite the horrors and danger. And it’s that mindset that gets to Zeke-when Armin picks up the leaf (Zeke sees the baseball). This is how the former titan shifters are convinced to come to the aid of everyone and turn the battle. Armin was the one that got them to join the fight. It’s tragic, when Eren finally notices the seashell. It had been there the entire time and if he only had his friend’s ability to see and appreciate what was in front of him the cycle of war and destruction could have been broken.
