    If you live in humid equatorial lowlands, sempies are going to be more of a challenge. They can handle hotter summers if they get a temperature downswing at night. They're native to the mountain ranges in Europe, Alpine regions to Mediterranean and Anatolian highlands. So if you live in lowlands on the Indian subcontinent, you should probably keep them indoors if you have air conditioning and a dehumidifier to use during the monsoon season. I live in the southern Appalachians at about 3k ft above sea level, summers can get to 110f and winters as low as -10f. They don't need a substrate that retains water at all. Down there in humidtown, instead of planting them in soil you might want to try putting an old broken terracotta pot in a bag and bash it to pea gravel size pieces, use that for soil

    A lot of sempervivum species are native here in Italy but they grow only on the mountains, usually over 1800m. So I had the chance to observe them in their natural environment in every condition and season. Yes they do grow un rocky soil, but adding so much sand doesn't work. You should make a pile of little stones arranged in a circle and fill it with a very little but rich soil. Alternatively you could use very little pots filled with rich soil and bury it completely in a sand or grit filled larger pot. About the temperature my one are now in the balcony at 39°C, under direct sun can be well over 50, and over and no one seems to soffer a lot, but the sunshine is limited to the morning hours, and I live at 500m on sea level. That means during the day the heat can be very strong, but nightime the temp drop drastically. Ventilation is essential, they can stand -20°C to +50°C but only with a very low humidity. What makes them soffer is very hight humidity not hight temp.

      thank you so much for the information ...its best to get information from someone who has closely observed them thanks a ton :)...yes i have seen the pictures they grow like weed lol in small puddles of little soil that's available to them ....in my city humidity is not an issue its very dry ...but the issue is short winters ..i would say very very mild winters ...the minimum is 19 c and just for about 2 months or so...i also read some articles that say they need prolonged cold winters ..hence it wont work here :(

    There are several species of this particular type of succulent. Many can be grown outside even in North America. They will survive the winter and come back in the spring.
    My experience with sempervivum for several years was that they would grow beautifully in my containers outside during the summer but when I would bring them inside for the winter they would be noticeably unhappy. We have quite warm and humid summers here. The sempervivum type that I had apparently loved that warm, humid weather, however, soon after I would bring them in during the fall they would start to shrink and eventually die.
    This year I have kept them alive throughout the winter months ….so far. I used a soil mixture that had a little more grit. Don’t know if that has anything to do with it. The major difference has been that I water them a lot more. Our home tends to be quite dry during the winter due to the central heating running so much with it being so cold outside. I also am using grow lights.
    I have to say that most of the plants that I bring inside due to cold weather tend to pout quite a bit. They do not like the change of habitat. Some people say that we should gradually get them used to the change but that would be very difficult with so many plants of various kinds.
    I do think that grow lights and changing watering habits has made the biggest difference. Some species of plants are dormant during our winter season and the requirements of both light and water are different than during the summer. I have been pretty much ignorant about changing how much I water plants during the winter and actually it may be that the sempervivum did not get enough water during the very dry winter months. Many plants just cannot tolerate the dry air and lack of sunlight even in the winter. Most house plants are tropical and need more humidity. The succulents are the most difficult to figure out, especially with so many different types with different growing seasons and light requirements.
    Next summer I hope to plant quite a few sempervivum in the ground and hope for the best when summer arrives the following year.
    My grandmother always had “hens and chicks” in her large flower garden. I wish that I had learned from her how to grow things so well as she once did. Sadly, she was gone by the time that I was old enough to have my own garden.

    • @LushGardener
      @LushGardener  2 года назад +1

      Awe m sorry to hear about your grandma i’m sure she loved her sempervium 🙂yes sempervium love temperatures that are lower ….and yes the more gritty works well for them ….I actually had a few but the moment my city enters the month of April that’s it they start having issues but yes I did try the more gritty soil and they seemed to do well unfortunately I lost them while moving to another house … maybe in future I will try them again the issue with me is I have 1500 plus succulents and hardly have much time to attend each succulent and so I give up on the ones that need constant check and then the month of April they just can’t handle 35 degress Celsius that’s like 95 degrees so I had a stuff time with them 😞
      Yes it’s take a lot to understand succulents unlike other house plants … I think it’s mainly because of their habitat

    • @johannalvarsson9299
      @johannalvarsson9299 2 года назад

      Sorry to hear about your grandmother...
      I am growing Sempervivums since 2004, so I have quite some expierience.
      I killed the first ones i got because I took them inside during the winter...
      Then I realized that they are VERY tolerant to even harsh frost as long as they are given time to acclimate. So you cannot just throw them into the freezer in summer (please don`t do that!), but if you plant them in the ground and don`t do anything to comfort them during autumn, they should be able to survive frost at least down to -20°C (i think thats -4°F)...
      Of course I cannot guarantee you anything, but mine have survived 14 winters with those temperatures already.
      Sidenote: If they are etiolated, they will not tolerate any frost at all, so in this case, don`t get them outside!
      Really, Sempervivum is a very unusual succulent, you cannot treat it like almost all other ones. The same goes for the sedum-variants that come from the alps. They come from an enviroment with cold winters and only moderately warm summers, so they are specialized for a climate that is almost the exact opposite of what most other succulents are adapted to.

    Dear, every plant grows in its habitats or one should create the same environment. Tender succulents will not survive in harsh conditions. Best suited temperature for them is 15 to 27 degrees centigrade. In ncr delhi either opt for greenhouse or for hard succulents..
    Also use cinder 85% and rest other course sand compost fungicides bone meal, neem cake etc . No clay or cocopeat be used.. Take care of succulents like a baby.. Only then we will succeed..

They developed a dark purple color down inside the leaves. I was heartbroken. The leaves were firm, not squishy and not transparent albeit I could tell the dark color was not on the surface. 🥵My environment has been absolutely awful, 40C and humidity in the 90s for several months. AWFUL. So glad for air-conditioning!!!! I was very careful with the watering. What happened? 😕😥

    • @LushGardener
      @LushGardener  Год назад

      ohhh no that’s terrible…this is due to the environment…I never had this issue apart from few dry rot ….yes I got the dark purple part …it’s an internal rot due to heat most probably and high humidity…90 percent good lord that very high and 40 c isn’t helping either I think moving them indoor would have been better idea where they outdoor ? sorry didn’t ask …yes it’s due to the environment…yes all the varieties apart from echeveria were dormant that 40 was too high …echeveria also can handle that heat and the humidity…so both the combination was deadly …I know how heartbreaking it is ..but please dont stress yourself…it wasn’t your fault 😒

      regarding faucaria tigrin I haven’t grown that variety yet ….as it’s a succulent of the subtropical it’s should do well in humidity…don’t expose to hot sun keep it in indirect bright light…soil has to be extremely gritty or sandy and well draining
      don’t keep them underwatered for long otherwise the stem will die you need a proper watering schedule
