    The afternoon before Katrina hit us, our cats were trying to get out of the house like crazy! I noticed and kept watching, and tried to keep them locked in my room but everyone was busy gathering things and putting things high up, so I had to keep telling my family to keep my door closed. We had a kennel to put them in. To my horror, my cats escaped....the mama, Bella ran to the front door and meowed to her daughter, Ella to follow her. It was like Bella knew what was happening and wanted to get her baby to safety. I chased them but they were gone. I still think about them. The good thing was that there ended up being only very minimal damage, so I know they survived. I still pray that they found a new family.

    I was in the gulf for Karina and Rita - 2005 was one helluva hurricane season. We took in people and animals. We were in the panhandle and people moved towards Texas and the animals were moved towards Florida. (mostly, not all of course) We had so many pets and livestock come through and as sad as it was it was amazing to see all the people step up and take in as many animals as they could.

      J McIntosh It’s hard sometimes actually. When you’re in the midst of a natural disaster and you HAVE to leave immediately, sometimes dogs and cats end up hiding themselves. I’ve heard of it a lot especially with tornadoes. They end up hiding and it’s actually better to leave instead of stay an try searching and end up dying. Then again a tornado and a hurricane are two different things. You have time to leave when a hurricane is coming, where as a tornado, not so much.

    Buses??? FEMA didn't send us buses until 3-4 days later!!! Our Mayor had to get on national TV and yell and demand for buses to be sent for the people who had been forced to evacuate to the Superdome and the Convention Center because they had no cars or any way to get out of the city as the hurricane approached! People drowned, and the elderly and babies had died from dehydration without water or food.

    I grew up with 3 dogs in southeastern New York State. They passed away a long time ago. They were family. I loved them so much. We had a shih tzu, a cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle mix) and an English mastiff (BIG DOG). It must have been agonizing for pet owners in New Orleans and surrounding areas to have to leave their pets behind. One thing about dogs is that they are VERY loyal and will love you unconditionally.

A choice made under coercion is not consent. Threat of death takes away your ability to consent. They didn't want to leave their pets behind, they didnt choose to leave their pets behind, they Had No Options. Be violently angry at the evacuation laws, at the people who ran it, and the people in charge who didn't demand evacuation until far Far to late. But Do Not be cruel to victims. I own 3 cats and leave food & water out on the balcony every morning so the neighborhood cats can come and eat and drink. NO cat will ever starve as long as I live. The heat here in the SF Bay Area has been brutal this week. It supposedly set a record of 102F today and is 106F in Pittsburg, Ca, where my girlfriend lives with 2 black cats she rescued from abuse 1 year ago, Cleo & Caesar. I was only 4 when Katrina came through. This was the storm that sparked my interest in meteorology and made me want to pursue it as a hobby/career.
    My mom remembers little toddler me pointing to the TV as the news was going on about Katrina saying, "that's a bad storm!" With a sort of awe in my voice. She should've known! Lol
    10+ years later, don't exactly remember when, we drove to see my grandparents in Texas. When we drove through New Orleans, there was still damage from Katrina. A few houses were condemned and boarded up and people didn't bother to remove them. It was sad but also very cool.
    If you live in a hurricane prone area, please don't take any chances and evacuate when a hurricane/tropical storm is coming your way. As we've seen from Irma and Wilma, it can rapidly strengthen and you won't have any time to evacuate safely. Houses can be rebuilt, lives can't.
    Also PLEASE take your pets. They are family too.

    I'm still haunted by that little boy whose family lost everything, and after a hellish week at the Superdome, officials ripped his tiny dog from his arms, saying he couldn't take it on the bus. I still remember him sobbing "Snowball!" and crying so hard he threw up.
    An awful lot of people didn't have money or means to leave: public transportation was shut down several days before the hurricane arrived, and employers wouldn't let people take off early. Back then, almost no shelters allowed pets, and good luck finding a hotel that would allow them. So you could only take your pets if (a) you owned a car in a city where public transportation was usually pretty good and (b) you had relatives to stay with.
    Some people left their pets to die. Other people died because they refused to leave their pets. I'm glad that emergency planners are gradually coming to realize that it's a horrible choice to have to make, and that accommodation should be made so that people don't have to make that choice when weighing whether to evacuate.

    7:41 with cats, you don’t really have to worry about them going to the bathroom so much, they can withhold for 24 to 48 hours in hospital. They can hold it almost indefinitely to our standards lol. So honestly save your fur babies, they will be happy and thankful. They can hold it. They just want to be with you.
    I am pretty sure that Katrina and Harvey both tied for costliest hurricane damage, and they weren’t even the same category. $127 billion. Just think about it, Houston, Texans have a lot of assets tied up in that city.
    Also, I was born and raised in Florida. I am a native Floridian; however, I felt God leading me to move away from Florida. I live in the Dallas area now. I cannot imagine losing my fur babies or being separated like this, and Hurricane Irma made it very clear that it could become a very real scenario for me. They evacuated the east side of Florida, and Hurricane Irma went up the west side, the side I lived on.
    Don’t build your houses on the sand, people. Literally.

    People who leave their pets behind during disasters piss me off. You made a commitment to take care of that animal. They don't know whats going on and theyre trusting you to protect them. If your mindset is "its just a pet" then dont get one. Its unfair to the animals.

    • @pisces2569
      @pisces2569 4 года назад +1

      Idk Jones some people who leave their pets in a disaster have that. Others are like that guy who thought by leaving his cats with food and a note will give both of them a better chance or survival, and others have no choice because human rescue groups and storm shelters won’t let them take their animals and they have loved ones depending on them so they have to leave the pets behind. Don’t be so quick to group everyone together.

    • @idkdude420
      @idkdude420 4 года назад +2

      @@pisces2569 If the storm is so bad that you have to evacuate obviously its too bad to leave your pets in. Id rather sleep on the street with my animals than leave them behind because "shelters wont take them in". Which btw if you're evacuating hotels and FEMA are required to let you keep your pets now. So theres no excuse. Letting them run free outside is a better option than locking them in a house where they cant escape. Dont get a pet if you arent going to FULLY take care of them.

    • @pisces2569
      @pisces2569 4 года назад +1

      Idk Jones FEMA does not require hotels and shelters to let you keep vets. It requires that an alternate storm shelter be set up for pets only. Hotels and human shelters still have the right to refuse pets. Second while that may be easy for you to say and do. Not everyone in the same circumstances can. People taking care of kids, disabled, or elderly loved ones have to put their lives and theirs first before pets. People who cannot evacuate for medical or logistic reasons may have no choice but to leave their pets at home while they go to a shelter especially if they require medical care like oxygen. Yes there are people who have the ability to evacuate their pets and chose not to do because of selfishness but not every one who leaves their pets has the ability to take them. Second you say this from the comfort of your own home. It’s easy to make that declaration. These people had to make these decisions with a category 5 hurricane which meteorologists were predicting to be the deadliest yet while living below sea level. The circumstances to make that choice are much more dire and urgent, especially when you have loved ones depending on you

    • @idkdude420
      @idkdude420 4 года назад +1

      @@pisces2569 Hurricanes give you days, if not weeks worth of time to prepare. And also yes they do require hotels in area to allow pets, as well as setting up emergency shelters. Its part of the Stanford act/ PETS act. So that still gives you days to take your pet to a shelter or prepare to go to a hotel. If not, once again just open your doors and let them free. Its still safer than locking them in a house to die. There are no excuses, just stupidity and selfishness.

    • @pisces2569
      @pisces2569 4 года назад +1

      Idk Jones no argument there except with hotels. Again that is a misconception with the new laws post-Katrina. There is a difference between being forced to leave your pet home but setting your house up with excess food and water and letting them roam to increase chance of survival than choosing to leave them behind tied up outside with no escape or any chance of survival

    It's the unpopular opinion, but I do value good humans' lives over animal lives. Not that I'm ok with animals being abandoned under normal circumstances, but these were not normal circumstances. The people who left their animals were forced into exceptional circumstances, and it's impossible to truly predict what you yourself would do until you are put into those circumstances. I do believe there are some people out here who would stay with their animals no matter what, but these people are likely living alone with their animals, and that's fair enough if that's their decision. Those of us who have spouses and kids have to put them first. Having a baby myself really put into perspective where my priorities are, and I've chosen to just not have a pet for now while my full devotion is to my baby. I know for sure that my baby comes first over any pet that I'd have.

      Honestly you say you would never leave your dog, but you don't know what you would do until you're in that situation. I take my cat everywhere with me if there's bad weather, but if I'm forced to leave my cat behind, then I don't really have a choice. I do love my animals to death and would do anything for them, but shelters wouldn't take in the animals half the time. My aunt lives in New Orleans and luckily, she was able to evacuate with her pets, but there were some people who just couldn't evacuate. The guy in the episode said that he didn't want to leave his cats, but he didn't have a choice. He was being forced to evacuate from the building and shelters wouldn't allow you to bring your pets with you. It sucks that that's the case and I pray that I'm never in that situation, but the best way to be sure that you won't have to leave your pets behind is to evacuate if you can and take your pets with you.

    So disappointing that this whole episode was all about New Orleans. I'm not surprised. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where the eye wall hit with its 28 foot storm surge that wiped miles of homes and businesses off their foundations. Waveland Mississippi is ground zero for Katrina, not New Orleans. New Orleans flooded because their crooked government let the levies go in the poorest parts of the city to sacrifice them to save the richer areas. Sad! Hopefully the part one on this means there's a part 2 for ground zero here in Mississippi the "land mass" as they called us over here that has always been forgotten concerning Katrina. New Orleans flooded due to a lake and levies. Mississippi's entire 80 mile coast was devastated by the Gulf coming in and high winds.
