I think the DS Lite only outputs composite video, and there is no native digital HDMI mod for the DS Lite. would be a really bad idea to have a VCR DAC installed, so it would have to have a zero-latency line-doubler installed, but since the scaler would be working with composite video it would still not have great video quality. best option is to output composite video from the Macro to a CRT.
Honestly this, if there was was to output both screens while having the bottom section as the controller, A plug n play consolized DS is something I'd be all over for.
It's not obvious. The video out signal that the DS lite (only one that supports video out) produces is 240p. You would still need a converter for composite video. And I doubt you would like the result
@@robotm99there would have to be a zero-latency line-doubler or line-quintupler etc installed into the Macro in order for the experience to not be bad, and even then I’m pretty sure the DS Lite is only able to output composite video so even if the scaling was actually done well the picture would still be kinda bad. like composite video using a RetroTINK-5X for example is zero-latency and properly-scaled but it’s still hard to make composite video look good when transcoded to digital.
DUDE! Congrats on five years of Retro Renew! This is one of my favorite channels, and, since I started watching your channel, I have bought myself a GBA consolizer (which I love), and I have also finally bought a GBA custom kit with lithium battery, new screen, and new audio chip and speakers. Because I you, I WILL assemble it soon. Thanks for everything you do!
I would love to see BoxyPixel extend the shell to include the second screen in a slab format similar to the 2DS. The other problem with the DS was the hinge, not necessarily a bad upper screen. Removing the hinge and having a metal shell would fix a lot of issues.
The fat version is much worse in terms of build quality because it was more or less an experiment by Nintendo to see if there was actually a market for this new dual screen handheld. In saying that you can get a capture card for it...
Honestly I have always thought the Gameboy Macro was a bad gimmick, even for a DS with a broken top screen. Because in the amount of money and effort it would take to mod it into one, you could probably fix whatever issues the console had originally. It’s just a worse GBA in nearly every regard, no link cable support, and no GB/GBC support. If the screen swapping mod becomes commonplace though, that feels like a decent compromise.
for me at least its good but i would prefer an upgrade that allows for both screens but removes that nasty hinge (kinda like the form factor for 2DS but with the GBA slot for DS
@@legendofswords The problem with that is that game graphics took that hinge into account. My preference would be a video out mod where the top screen was outside. Sort of like a wired Wii U
Congrats on five years. Handheld mods in particular are something I’ve always been very interested in but never had the time for. I appreciate these videos nonetheless which have an educational value to them plus a uniquely high production value feelings given by how well they are shot compared to the great competition in the handheld modding space. On top of that you just have a calm voice which made these video a sort of weekly ritual of mine whenever you uploaded since 2021 to watch these as I eat my lunch. He’s to another 5 years of Macho Nacho to watch as I eat lunch and one day I might actually try some of these mods for myself.
8:24 - Sorry to be pedantic, but those are not vias, they are test pads/points. Vias are the very small plated holes that go through the board which connect traces on the various layers of the PCB together. Many test pads are connected directly to a via and nothing else while others are simply inline with a trace or sitting on a ground plane. That said, you perform the mod excellently and I love what you do with the channel! Congrats on the 5 years!
Dude replace the broken screen for cheaper and get free screenprotection from the clamshell. Plus you don't kill your DSs features. This mod is beyond stupid
It won't be long til someone makes a headphone extender that sits flush with the case. Probably easy to make and 3d print, the hard part will be the bit of metal.
A Dual Screen handheld made into a single screen handheld that can switch between dual screens. This is the definition of the saying: 'Because you can'.
Having a broken original DS, I could need another more improved Macro Mod for that one. Looks pretty cool tho, love how the metal shell kinda suits the DS/lite menu too.
metal shells are so expensive, but they look so good. i'd say they even take the edge over clear shells thanks to their durability, imo. also, that was some wicked soldering man :)
I like that the refurbish market is opening venues to finally make a DS single-screen fully functional. It'd be nifty if they could create shells that made the build shaped like a Super NES controller, since the DS basically has all the inputs of that console.
When I just watched the video there were still 6 of Luke Wakeford's mods in stock. Well 5, because I bought one. ❤ Thanks for mentioning that. Never heard of that . ❤
I would love to get that shell in a clear black plastic. I'm not a fan of metal shells nor their prices. And congratulations on 5 years of showing us what our systems could be.
Finally! The one-screen DS that begged to never exist (I fully recognize the value in terms of salvaging damaged DS hardware to still be elegant and useful, but I just had to make the snarky comment)
I would want to put membrane switches under the D Pad to fix how mushy it is. That could introduce more problems with how loud each button press becomes, so noise dampening Material might have to be added, maybe a thin film of silicone? One of my personal gripes with the ds lite was the gba game sticking out, but they fixed that
I have a DS Lite with a broken top screen that I’ve been just waiting to find the time/money/motivation to do a mod like this. It’s not meant to be an upgrade but give new life to broken hardware.
It is finally the gameboy advance that matches the gameboy DMG and super gameboy design aesthetic. That being said, I dont want it unless it comes in DMG beige plastic with the grey dot matrix labeled bezel. Otherwise it won't match my vaporwave super DMG themed collection
I don’t see the appeal to this mod at all. GB Macro made sense when it was a plastic shell used to revive a broken console on the cheap. The backlit DS screen is nice but pales in comparison to aftermarket GBA screens
If the creators are listening I'd absolutely love a plastic version of this! As cool as metal handhelds are I don't really like to use them long term, found that out with the unhinged shell.
Although I appreciate the work behind this, I think it's a waste because you can't use all the possibilities this hardware has to offer. If the upper screen is broken the pieces for replacing it aren't very expensive.
I love these mods, but my biggest complaint will always be the lack of a cheaper plastic option. Both for my wallet, and also because I have a metal allergy and can't handle these devices very long.
As the owner of a definitely jankier version of one of these I can vouch that they are fun especially with screen swapping. They just make little sense in 2024 with stuff like the miyoo mini and flipzizzle around.

Yes! I’ve been waiting for this video! Awesome build video. I would love to build one too at some point. I wonder, would it be possible to have two speakers installed? One on the front and one at the back.
The thing with calling it a single screen Nintendo DS is that "DS" stands for dual screen so that doesn't make sense, it's more like a gameboy advance that can play DS games
I used to work in a retro game shop and fixing a top screen of a DS lite is EXTREMELY difficult and not really cost effective. Therefore turning them into something like this can be a fun little upcycling project. I do agree that doing this to a functional ds is silly, but for ds with a busted top screen or something this is neat
That's pretty sweet for a GBA Macro Not sure I would play much DS on it, though. Unless I can find games that mostly use one screen, that switching around would get way too fiddly for my liking.
seeing a shell mod that makes the GBA cart not stick out just makes me want a DS XL mod even more. someone PLEASE make a converter to get DSi XL screens to work with a DS (lite)
I’d rather use my PSP Go with a Ps Vita Battery mod. Now the battery lasts forever while also staying pretty compact and i can play Game Boy Advance games and other retro console games perfectly fine. 🤓👍
the only thing missing imo, is a micro/mini hdmi (via usbc why not) to output the top screen at home
