  • Ryan Knouf (aka Postulous) approached me with a cool idea for a show. He explained this master patch he created to perform 6 pieces he had previously performed all at once in an extended set. He wanted to shoot this remarkable video for Modular World. Plus, I could interview him on the streets of San Diego?
    How could I say no?

    Bio:
Postulous is the electronic music brainchild of Ryan Knouf. His musical journey started in elementary school playing trumpet. It moved to teaching himself to play keyboards and MIDI sequencing in his teens, which led to playing guitar in rock bands, which then led to getting a degree in music theory, and finally discovering the modular synth In 2018.
Postulous distills his life experiences and deep love of music into musical pieces that are, at times, cinematic, atmospheric, nostalgic, playful, aggressive, ambient, buoyant, haunting, mournful, and always thought-provoking, as is life.

Awesome feature Johno! Loved the introspective walkabout with Ryan in your local and narrative weave btwn life and muse. Ryan’s concept of recreating past lives with how they were in terms of songs, compositions but with new life is both great as is important to give it record and some sense of formality. Loved the transition range from scary dark dragon to melancholy and forlorn sweeps to the sparse hypnotic beat in near end. 15 min of the performance became my ritual meditation this morn. Great stuff good show good art!

Thanks Jim! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And that is so great to hear that it was part of your ritual meditation. Sorry in advance for the shameless promotion, but my newest record Inward Journeys Vol. 1 is 3 long form songs that could be great for your meditations. The song underneath the interview is a song called Pentatonic Meditation from that record. Thanks for watching and thank you so much for your really nice insights!

I'm always fascinated by people who perform such compositions on a Eurorack system. The amount of work behind this particular one is incredible. How many times did Ryan rehearse?

Thanks so much for tuning in. Ya, I'm blown away every time too. Such dedication and passion to make a performance video like this.

Thank you so much! The day that I filmed and recorded that performance, I ran it through 3 times. I ended up using take 2 for the show. Not only is each rehearsal/take around 30 minutes, but there are 15 steps that I had a checklist for to set it back to the beginning positions for the set. It's kinda like a pre-flight checklist. Once I went through the process of relearning each song and had a game plan for transitions, I'd say I rehearsed it about 10-15 times before the day I recorded it. The funny thing is is that I kept on having little happy accidents and incorporating those into the set. And listening back would spark different ideas. So I guess the way the set ended up being was only rehearsed like 5 times.

@@postulous2030 Impressive. The hardest thing for me right now is to be able to make good transitions between parts and compose. You've done it well, and the happy accident on top is just perfect as I believe Eurorack is all about embracing those things. Otherwise, why not use a DAW, right?

@@raktNewsletter Thanks! Yeah exactly. Having all of the parts at your fingertips has the possibility of hitting something that you didn't intend and sometimes it sounds cool. Programming everything in a DAW certainly doesn't allow for that. Something that I could never recreate was on my song Drone for Drone 2. During the recording/performance I nudged a cable in such a way that it briefly shorted and that short hit the delay is a super rad way. I've tried to recreate that to no avail.
