Joy I just luv watching your videos, such great tips. I am learning how to sew and you have helped me to feel more confident in my sewing. You also have a great personality too. Pauline
Joy, you’re a wonderful teacher! Your pen experiment was very funny and informative. I will make sure to wash my pants before going out in a blizzard...great advice. Love your videos. Thank you.
I really enjoy all of your videos but the tutorials are especially fun. I have been sewing for a long time, but it's always good to get reinforcing information and tips. I also appreciate your instructions for new sewing people; it's so important to be kind to them so that they want to continue doing it. I love that younger people are embracing sewing and other hand crafts. You are a great teacher!
Thank you so much Therese. I agree that it is wonderful that the younger generation was taking up sewing. I always wanted to be a teacher growing up. Better late than never. lol.
Wow! You are a wealth of good usable helpful info! What a great teacher. I appreciate how quick and easy it is to make well fitting garments with the extra prep at the front end of the project. I need to learn to slow down and do the things you do. And you make the lesson fun.
Joy I wanna to stop by to Thank you for showing about the straight of grain. I’ve watched many many videos and yours is the only video showing how to use the straight of grain. I’ve seen it in my patterns but never really knew how to use it. Thank You Joy!🙏
Joy you're such a goofball! You make me laugh every time. Thx for being so plain with explanations to newbies bout selvage and straight of grain. But even we more experienced sewists need to be reminded bout rotary cutter. I didn't have a prblm with pulling it toward me but did get my finger in the way once and cut a slab off right beside my fingernail. Scared me so bad I bought a Kevlar glove. Not taking anymore chances. I'm a clumsy person by nature!
I am getting ready to make a pattern of pants like this one and I love how you explain the grain of the fabric, thank you for your tutorials, you are so funny 😆.
Excellent class! One of your many God Given talents is teaching!! Appreciated the demo on the frixon pen in the freezer. Also appreciate the many hours you put into the class.
I loved your Frixion pen experiment. I work in a laboratory (until I retire the end of March, Yay!) so it was fun to watch. I'd also heard those claims about the marks coming back in cold weather, so that's good information to add to my arsenal. Your SFD pants sewalong videos are perfection. If I ever meet any new Seamstresses I'll be sure to recommend your RUclips channel to them.
Joy you did a fantastic awesome job , I enjoyed that video, it's like I was sitting right there with you. You're just so easy going. I look forward to more of these.
Watched this video then went to cut mine out. Twill fabric resisted my straight pins! Decided to follow your tip and use weights--mine were soup cans lying on their sides!! Worked really well and will use this tip again. Thanks.
Thank you for the Frixion tests. I knew about the severe cold making the marks come back. That was from one of your videos eons ago. I didn't know about the washing part of permanently removing the marks. So if one of your marked pant pieces jumps out the window and lays in 100 degree heat - would the marks be gone? Not to worry because you throw it in the freezer and voila! it's back. Keep on teaching!
Joy, Love your pant videos ~ And wanted to share with you, that what you're referring to, when you say "something happens when you fold fabric-it gets eaten up by ions...." What you're actually referring to is "The Turn Of The Cloth" (the fabric that is taken up at the fold point, when it is bent/folded over)
A question: glad you explained about prewashing fabric. My pants pattern needed 1.75 yds. I bought 2 yds of a ponte knit. I washed and dried it, being careful to not overdry. The piece then measured 60 in length! Is that much shrinkage to be expected? I washed and dried a second time....measured about 58 in in length. Wondering if clerk measured correctly. Thanks for all you share:)
if you r using a fabric that you are afraid the pens/chalk/transfer paper will stain, just use a piece of painters tape for the wrong side. You can also write on it to show the front or back pieces and the right or wrong side. :) Been sewing for a few decades and I don't know if its just me, but I don't think they make these marking tools as well as they used to.
I totally agree! The chalk doesn't write most of the time and the blue and purple markers dry out in 10 minutes. Frustrating. I've seen Sandra Betzina use the tape. I need to try that. Thanks.
@@Joy4650B Hi Joy, Instead of chalk I like to use Soap for my large pattern outline. Those little slivers of left over Bar Soap are excellent on dark fabrics. Soap glides and does not create dust. However, I would not Iron on it.
Your pants series is great, Joy. I loved the experiment with the pens. I remember you showing those pens in a previous video but I forgot to buy some...have to put them on my Amazon wish list! Had to look up that little elbows rhyme because I never went to camp like that as a kid. If it really involved having to run around the room being shamed from having elbows on the table I guess I didn't miss much, haha!
Nobody ran around the room. The kids just sang it to any adult or counselor they saw with elbows on the table. We also sang "Here we stand like birds in the wilderness, waiting to be fed."
Thank goodness your experience was a good one, it was funny to see how many blips there were on the internet about that running stuff. There was even a video of some kind of camp and they were all adults and the gal who got caught was having to do the running, hahaha.
Hello Joy. Your blouse is very pretty. I really like the collar. What pattern and fabric content is it? Also is it a SFD pattern or designed from a commercial pattern? Again your blouse is lovely on you. Thank you Joy. God’s Blessings. Marilynn
You can buy a handle for your ruler that attaches with suction. I use an extra handle that was for the shower wall when we needed it for my mother-in-law when she lived with us. Works great!
I bought Lint Rollers at the dollar store I keep in the trunk of car, I’m a caregiver and sometimes my clients might have hair on there clothes, so before we get in car, I just roll off the hair from clothes. They like it.
I’m a swayback just like you but my bottom is way bigger which makes it even more exaggerated! I’ve been putting elastic in the back of all my purchased pants forever. Still working on my SFD master pattern but it’s coming along!
When my granddaughter were little they called it a pizza cutter. I also kept fabric scraps in a basket along with straight pins and the "designed" clothes on my dressmakers dummy..they spent hours doing that
I have also had problems with the pin opening up when u r using it to pull elastic thru... my suggestion is to use the old fashioned diaper pins, they have a different locking system So as to protect them from not opening up on a baby...sure they won’t fit all the casing sizes However they work great...
Hi Joy, I may have watched the Series on How to Sew Pants out of sinc. You were applying a crease to the cut fabric after folding the front leg panel in half... That crease is the Grain Line. Is this correct? Thanks so much.
@@Joy4650B Thinking... I've been watching how to make pant pattern alterations. I have a pair of pant that I want to clone, but make a little bit longer at the crotch line. If I were to outline the pants, cut out the pattern, make the seat alterations, then fold the paper in half at the crease line would that grain line work? Grain line added last? LOL We both have learned from Peggy, but I learn the most from you! Oh! You didn't film a part 3 video for the experiment you and Philly did using the flexible ruler at the crotch line. Did it work out the way you were expecting, or is that ruler collecting dust now? Always!💗
Joy, is it ok if we fashion our pants differently than yours and still be eligible to be in the drawing? I would like to do a zipper and pockets and a different waistband.
My pants “buckle” a bit in the front just at bottom of crotch area and it appears yours do at well. More obvious from side and front view. What tip do you have to avoid this?
I think it is in the tips and tricks. I showed on the paper pattern where I had moved. You fold the pattern piece on the grainline all the way up and down. Then you simple redraw the dart so it lines up with the fold you just put into the paper pattern.
I have never pulled a thread to straighten anything. If you line up the selvages, smooth everything out, and be sure your grain line is straight on the pattern, you should not have any trouble.

great video. and you have taken time to explain it.

I had to watch the video a minute to see what blouse you were talking about. That is a Saf-T-Pockets pattern.
Awesome teaching!
You can buy a handle for your ruler that attaches with suction. I use an extra handle that was for the shower wall when we needed it for my mother-in-law when she lived with us. Works great!
I have three suction cup handles, and they always fall off.

U can use duct tape, for the weights, also. They have lots of colors and patterns, now. No glueing.
Hi Joy, I may have watched the Series on How to Sew Pants out of sinc.
You were applying a crease to the cut fabric after folding the front leg panel in half...
That crease is the Grain Line. Is this correct?

Yes. The crease is on grain, but it may not be drawn in that exact spot on the pattern.

Great video. Can you provide the teddy bear ladies information? I am happy to send my extra fabric to her.
Of course: Her name is Rebecca Janes, 1673 County Road 1900N, Cisne, IL 62823
Joy, is it ok if we fashion our pants differently than yours and still be eligible to be in the drawing? I would like to do a zipper and pockets and a different waistband.
Absolutely!!! You can make any style of pants.
My pants “buckle” a bit in the front just at bottom of crotch area and it appears yours do at well. More obvious from side and front view. What tip do you have to avoid this?
Ola Jordan I said I was going to shorten the front crotch length. That should help.
Joy Bernhardt
Thanks; I will try that. You are just adorable. I love the tops you are wearing.
I cannot find where you addressed making the dart line up with the crease line. Could you give a reference to the video and the time on the video
I think it is in the tips and tricks. I showed on the paper pattern where I had moved. You fold the pattern piece on the grainline all the way up and down. Then you simple redraw the dart so it lines up with the fold you just put into the paper pattern.
40 years ago I learned to pull a thread to even the fabric. Now, as a repeat beginner, is that not necessary anymore ?
I have never pulled a thread to straighten anything. If you line up the selvages, smooth everything out, and be sure your grain line is straight on the pattern, you should not have any trouble.
I noticed that you did not have a dart in the back. How do I eliminate it?
Just don't draw it. If you are using elastic in the back, you will not need it.
I do that wrong every time too. Don't know why. Some kind of sewing dyslexia, I think.
Now I know why my pants never came out straight. I would put pattern on fold and not grain of fabric😫😫😫
