Hi, I just wanted to mention for others who are watching from the United States that Lily of the Valley is an invasive species in many US locations. I adore the scent and look of them, but recently found out that it chokes the life out of native life in my area. Unfortunately, I've got a ton of work ahead to remove massive mats of this plant. Thanks for the video. Lots of lovely plants for me research further.
Thank you so much for bringing this to attention! It's indeed essential to be aware of the potential impact certain plants can have on local ecosystems. While Lily of the Valley is cherished by many for its fragrance and delicate appearance, its invasive nature in some regions can pose challenges, as you've pointed out. I appreciate you sharing your experience and providing this vital information for the community. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope you find some wonderful, eco-friendly additions for your garden. Remember, local nurseries and extension services can be a wealth of knowledge for plant choices that benefit local ecosystems. Happy gardening! 🌱
This was a very good and detailed video, not too much or too little. Now I realize why my hydrangeas struggled so much because they got too much sunlight even though I put a sun sail over them. Thanks
I know almost zero about plants and have a mostly shady patio to make nice. Thanks for all the great suggestions. I made my list, now to see how many of these I can gather.
That's wonderful to hear! 🌿 Gardening can be a rewarding journey and it's great that you're getting started. Remember, when shopping for your plants, to check their specific needs regarding light, water, and soil conditions. Since your patio is mostly shady, focus on those plants that thrive in such environments. Plants like hostas, ferns, and impatiens could be good choices to start with. I wish you the best of luck on your plant gathering adventure. Feel free to ask if you have any questions along the way. 🌼

Brunnera & coral bells has spike flowers that are worth mentioning for shade areas. I would also love to grow Solomon seal this year if I can find some.

In Northern Virginia, which falls within USDA hardiness zone 7a, there are several rhododendron varieties that can grow well in shaded conditions. Here are a few recommended varieties: PJM Rhododendron (Rhododendron 'PJM'): This hybrid is well-suited to zone 7a and can tolerate partial shade. It produces vibrant pink or lavender flowers in early spring and has attractive evergreen foliage. Catawba Rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense): This native rhododendron variety is suitable for zones 4-8 and can handle partial to full shade. It produces large, showy clusters of purple, pink, or white flowers in late spring. Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum): This variety is native to the eastern United States, including Virginia, and grows well in zones 4-8. It can tolerate partial to full shade and produces clusters of white or pink flowers in early summer. 'Carolina Rose' Rhododendron (Rhododendron 'Carolina Rose'): This hybrid is a good choice for zones 6-9 and prefers partial shade. It has attractive, dark green foliage and produces bright pink flowers in late spring. When selecting a rhododendron for your garden, make sure to choose a location with well-draining, acidic soil and provide adequate moisture. Rhododendrons prefer soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0. It's also essential to ensure that your chosen variety is suitable for your specific hardiness zone and light conditions.

What is full shade One side of my 2 storey house has full sun from morning till evening. Is that full sun? One side is hid from the sun from morning till evening. Is that full shade or low light or indirect sunlight? I have carport in the middle of my yard, it casts shade all day, I can still see and read under it when I lie down there out of sun. Is that full shade indirect sunlight or? I have a windowless fibro shed, I can still clearly see my way round in the daytime. Is that fullshade low light or indirect sunlight?
Simple Definitions of Light Level 🌞✨👌 ✔️ Full sun means that the sun is out for at least 6 hours a day. ✔️ Part sun: 4 to 6 hours of direct sun a day, including some afternoon sun. ✔️ Part shade: 4 to 6 hours of direct sun a day, mostly in the morning. ✔️ Full shade means that you get less than 4 hours of direct sun a day.
@@PlantDoHomeGarden Simple, my question was simple. Your answer is not simple, it's confusing nonsense Full sun simple Part sun Part shade, very little difference between the three?, And full shade is more like half sun to no sun, so no sun is half son, thats not even an answer, that's a clueless flobboff Thanks
