Damn, I was all on board until the not lay flat part. As I look over my desk, all 3 notebooks are just open and laying there. A self-shutting notebook would just drive me too crazy. But the notepads look nice, will certainly check them out.
I love Endless products, including the Regalia paper. It DOES bleed through more than TRP, though, in my experiments. But the shading was great! Glad they care enough to keep us all happy!
I'm glad to see how this paper works. I used an Endless notebook (with TR) for my bullet and really liked it. I like the sort of rubbery feel of the cover.
I bought one of each of the endless notebooks. The TRP and the new Regalia. I liked them both. I might actually like the regalia slightly more. I loved how all of my inks looked on this notebook.
I just bought the Creative Block. It's great. I am a longtime user (early 90s) of Clairefontaine notebooks and stationery. I just bought a Rhodia pad for the first time. I like it too. I have some Tomoe River loose leaf and notebooks - great!
I don't mind ghosting but for me the problem with other papers different from tomoe river is that they are too thick. I carry my notebooks with me regularly and I need them to be as fine as possible. But the notebook seems good quality. Still, like you, I'd prefer it stayed flat. Thanks for the review!!
I bought an Endless Recorder a while ago and have been using it for at least 6 months. I liked it so much, I had to buy another one. I find as you are using it, the spine is more cooperative and it stays more open though not perfectly flat. This doesn’t bother me but I could see how it may annoy other people. I also use a pencil board under the page I am writing on and I leave it in the book when I use the stretchy strap to close it at the end of the day. I think this may also help train the spine to open up more. The last few pages are perforated. Also, it has less pages than a Leuchtturm1917 A5 and the page size is slightly smaller. I very much enjoy this notebook. Darn it, I was hoping the word wouldn’t get out as to how nice this paper is. 😅 I hope no other RUclipsrs review this notebook and it can remain our secret. 😉
I’ve been an adamant Endless Recorder user for years, and was apprehensive about the paper change. Thanks for the review, it’s definitely assuaged a lot of that concern. As an aside, I’m totally fine with notebooks that don’t have ‘lay-flat’ binding - it’s just never been a dealbreaker for me. Plus if a notebook has a tendency to close up on its own whenever I walk away, I don’t have to worry about any nosy ghosts sneaking over to read what I just wrote. That shit is between me and - I suppose - the _psychic_ ghosts! D:
Thanks for the review. I had hoped you would mention that the Regalia picks up the oil in your hands which smudges the ink, which I find very irritating. I’ve lived with a couple of these Endless recorders the old one and the new version. The tomoe river paper is in my opinion far superior to the regalia paper. Although the Endless is more affordable I’ll go back to Rhodia and the clairefontaine paper.
I definitely prefer tabs (Midori Chiratto Index Clip & Book Darts) over bookmarks/ribbons to mark the pages. I also have a pet peeve about notebooks not laying flat. I do want to try the creative block. Have you done a top 5 of favorite papers? I wonder what kinds are out there/available especially post Tomoe River paper.
I ordered a Recorder, it was delivered today, I thought I would be getting 80 gsm Regalia paper, but the one that is delivered is the old version with 68 gsm Tome River paper. I ordered it because it's my birthday soon and I wanted to start a journal from the day of my birth rather than the first day of the year. I know it's not a big deal but I sort of feel cheated, because I use a broad nib and I hate ghosting and feathering 😩 and I saw a bit of (very minimal) feathering with Pilot iroshizuku on a broad nib. but I am going to keep it anyway because it's too late to return it.
I freaking love regalia paper. Easily my favorite paper for fountain pen use. I really like the texture, it reminds me of fresh chalk, or very finely finished plaster. It's kinda intoxicating for me to write on. I like tomoe river as well, but I feel that my inks pop a lot more on regalia. As an example, I am not particularly fond of kon-peki on tomoe, but I really like it on regalia.
I've just taken my previous journal out which was a TR Endless Recorder, and it lays flat. I don't know if it is because it is used and therefore the cover has softened, or is it an issue with the new version that did not affect the old TR version ?
My favourite paper is Tomoe River. I was wondering if the Stalogy notebook is made with Tomoe river paper? I am stocking up on notebooks to use as journals, a5 or bigger. Are there any other tomoe river notebooks (other than the hobinichi & cousin etc.) out there?
No, Stalogy isn’t Tomoe River. There are a few TR options out there…plenty of them at 68gsm (like the one reviewed here) and some with the new 52gsm (neither compare to the original, though the latter is ok, I guess). Etsy has a lot of options for sale.
First, other than the first twelve and last twelve pages, my notebook lays pretty flat. Flat enough that it doesn't close itself, at least. Maybe it came with the spine broken, but if so, it doesn't show. Second, you keep saying that Rhodia, Clairefontaine, etc., have drag because they're coated. But Tomoe River paper is also coated that same way. It is, in fact, largely the coating that makes so many people love the paper. It is also the coating that allows the tiny particles of fiber it's made from to be so thin and still not bleed or feather. For all practical purposes, Tomoe River is a coating, and the fibers just give the coating a place to be used. I may be wrong, but I think all of the well-known, smooth, non-absorbent papers use the same clay coating, including Tomoe River paper. It's just a matter of how thick the coating is. Papers that aren't always has more drag, is always more absorbent, feathers worse, and always has a fibrous surface than coated paper. I feel no more drag with other quality papers than I do with Tomoe River. Less drag with some. Granted, I mostly use wet medium nibs, but I also use wet fine nibs. My favorite nib is a wet Japanese medium. I also have a very light touch, which is how fountain pens work best. I certainly never try to flex a soft nib which is not what they're for. But it doesn't matter whether I use a fountain pen, a gel pen, or a pencil, I see no difference in smoothness between Tomoe River paper and other quality coated papers. Regalia is the same way. I think it's a definite improvement over Tomoe River paper, but it still ghosts a little more than I like. I do find it usable, though, and I never liked Tomoe River paper. TR is not a good choice for anything long term because the fibers aren't strong enough and damage easily, and because the ink leaves too much dye on the surface of the paper. It isn't a good choice for journals or important documents, and it's too expensive to use for things that aren't important. Quality long term paper, anything archival or museum quality, allows ink to sink down into the fibers. Bulletproof ink sinks in and chemically bonds with the fibers. Waterproof ink sinks in and just grabs onto the fibers. Coatings can seriously interfere with these processes by forcing ink to stay on the surface. The coating on Tomoe River paper is why many inks smudge and take forever to dry. Anyway, I do like Regalia much more than Tomoe River.
just picked up a new Endless Recorder Regalia journal and can't stand it. All my nibs write a size bigger on it. The shading is absolutely gorgeous however - but my FA nib on my pilot 912 just becomes a medium sized nib whereas on the Endless Tomoe River it still feels crisp. I don't think I'll buy another regalia paper product again.
@@galessi1226 the original Tomoe River notebooks were awesome, but Rhoda and Clairefontaine are decent for keeping an EF line while also not being too expensive
Great product, great review, endless block sold out, so I won't be purchasing them anytime soon, like maybe never. Sorry but if you're going to push a product, actually have the product on hand to sell.
If you stand the book on it's spine, open the front and back covers 90 degrees and gently massage them, and repeat that process with each page until you reach the center of the book, it will probably stay flat and you won't have to break the spine. I'm not sure if you've done that but that's how I learned to open new books so that they last a long time. What you're doing by doing that is gently training the spine to bend without cracking
Too long. Much, much too long. - Although I saw knowledge in speed 1.5 .. it just went on and on and on. Keep making more videos, but get too the point and end the video.

Thanks for the review! I'm definitely intrigued but not laying flat is a no go for me. Hopefully they'll fix that in the future!

Tfs...great comparative review. LOVE those shimmer inks.
Yay! Another paper for me to fall in love with only to be heartbroken when it’s inevitably discontinued like Tomoe River and Cosmo Air Light. 😊 😢
Paper has so much weight in the writing process. It must be attuned to the pen and the ink and vice versa. Nice review. Thank you @Pens and Tea 😉

I haven’t done one in a while but I will add it to my list of ideas!
Notebooks have to lay flat for me, as my writing is already scrawly enough without the paper having any bounce. Good review.
The lay flat issue is definitely a big point off that’s for sure. It would truly be a perfect notebook if it did!

Idk. The regalia FEELS good but makes lines lay down thicker than they do on anything else. My fine nibs feel like a M.

Hey Chuck,
We were in the middle of a product refresh, they are all back in stock and with a new blank layout too! :D
