  • In this Photo Book Flip Through we'll be taking a close look at one of my favorite photobooks, Grays the Mountain Sends by Bryan Schutmaat.
    ✦ In this video:
Critically Acclaimed and winner of the 2013 Aperture Portfolio Prize Winner, Grays the Mountain Sends depicts portraits and landscapes of small mining communities in the American West - inspired by the poetry of Richard Hugo.

I really appreciated your insight and commentary about the book, the images, and their production. I'd love if you could share more of your favourite photobooks like this. Great stuff.

Thank you. I didn't know the artist before watching this video. Now I have an idea.

Thanks for producing and sharing this. I'm a fan of Bryan's work but this book is nearly impossible to purchase in any reasonable way these days. It's a beautiful body of work.

what's your impression of the paper stock of this book, in terms of how the images are rendered? Im looking to print my own book using the same stock but was concerned about the slight sheen of the paper, especially in shadow areas.

    The silliness of the observations:
".. there's the second horse" and " This is the only female portrait".
Next time just open the book, close the pie hole, and turn the pages. Also, I could use a warm up on my latte.

I believe Grays the Mountain Sends was all done on 8x10, not 4x5. His later work is when he began shooting with 4x5.
