- A 1987 Contessa 28' that was not cared for. Tried to keep it going but had to refurbish and repower it. Converted from inboard V8 to Outboard. Lots of thanks to Mobycool.com, Franzen Marine, John and Paul for all their help. Difficult task to complete on Maui as there are almost no parts. Standard Motors Marine and Amazon were lifesavers.
The job you did is superb. The inside bracing is excellent. The Mobycool bracket fits neatly under your swim platform. Hope you and your family enjoy safe boating for many years to come. Thanks for the video from jib73.
The job you done on the transom is unbelievable man... Good work
well done Sir !! huge thumbs up from Lake George, NY...* fish on !!
It's nice to see the reward of your hard work into that boat! All in 5 minutes! Also that is some beautiful water at 4:10
I'm 40 videos in, and still not done with my boat! Lol
Nice! It takes some real determination and seriously hard work to pull off a job like that!
Go baby go
That was a lovely video to watch, loved the song and seeing to ppl in love with there boat and each other...makes me want to go and buy a boat.😉👍🍺
Wow can’t believe I came across this vid. Seen you guys out one day came to offer some help when the merc was giving you troubles inside molokini. Great build, hope you are still getting out there. Aloha’s.
My Hero.... thanks again... turned out was bad connection on fuel module. Replaced everything and are good to go. We go out usually every Tuesday or Wednesday !!

Calling an i/o an inboard is sacrilegious, converting it to an outboard, is angelic.
Redundancy is critical, either go twin or throw a 9.9 on there or else they will find your bones washing up in the tropics. Would also suggest wearing a mask when sanding fiberglass. Congratulations on getting it back on the water.
Agree on 2 engines, next boat.
wow,, never heard that phrase ,,,, ever,,, good job on being original,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Outboards are very reliable!
Very nice job 👍!
I am doing one on a 20 ft glasply cabin cruiser!👍
You día a nice job and good 💡.
Great job
Good job mate. I always find it weird that the steps on a boat are always near the most dangerous thing on a boat...the propeller....
Thats why Emily's Law is out there. Must know.
Wow ! Nice job
Budget builds aren't always top notch. But they put you back on the water that's all that matters! maybe in the future upgrade to a double transom with 2 motors that's be nice
Would have been way better with two. Always afraid to go too far from shore with only one engine. Next time
Nice video ,mate.thanks for sharing...
Great job! Interesting how did it effect the value of the boat. How much you would be able to sell it for comparing to the same boat with original engine. I'm planning to do the same to my 1981 Sea Ray Sundancer 260 )))
What are the performance numbers? I thought for sure you were going with at minimum a 250hp. Your work looked phenomenal. Well done.
About 23 mph is top speed with 24P prop. Gets awesome gas mileage. Holds 120 gallons, I fill it about twice a year
Like what you done, have a bayliner pretty much the same as yours 1988 and like to do it the same,so how about if you were putting the outboard on the transom itself or would you have some issues with doing that?
You have to re-in force the transom on these I/O boats. They’re not designed for the weight and pushing force of the outboard, but its easily corrected.
Sweet.
Dave is it a 1985 2850? I have one myself.
Why such a small outboard? That’s one of the worlds most underpowered boats ever made as it is. I’m thinking about doing twin 250hp to my 2655.
Good idea... i should have done twin 150’s probably.
i know I'm missing something but I can't see where you say what motor you used ?
I would say its more eco on fuel, bigger is better but you can go longer with the outboard he put, awesome job by the way
Its a 2016 Mercury 150 4-Stroke
Nice job...but. How did you fasten pod to transom and how do you fasten outboard to pod? I see no studs or bolts of any kind? Kind of important part to show I would think.
Sorry about that. I used 8" long 3/4 stainless grade 8 bolts with a washer on either end and an elastic stop nut at the end. They are installed wet with PLF 5200 on them and its impossible to do by yourself. My friend Paul helped me.
I’m just going to do the same thing lol
I have a 2000 Bayliner capri. The engine locked up when We ran aground. I am considering the same thing. I spent a year restoring the boat and hate to have the time effort and money wasted. Do they sell those extensions for a conversion ?? Thanks for sharing.
Yes Mobycool.com makes the bracket. This is an easy thing to do and wont take too long . It took me a while because where I live, everything has to be shipped in. The biggest expense is the outboard engine. Not sure what engine you have now, but a 2000 you can probably get parts for, my 1987 engine was impossible. Consider finding out why your engine locked up. You could yank it out and rebuild it in a couple of weeks, or consider replacing engine with a crate motor. You could do a motor swap in a weekend. Lots of options
@@k9fashion Thanks for the info.
I plan on doing the same to my boat. Was wondering what you used on the outside that you sanded down. Thanks
So the white stuff is just resin with Cabasil (sp) mixed in. Its basically powdered fiberglass. You mix it to peanut butter consistency. The red stuff is a fiberglass putty... kind of like Bondo. No strength but will fill low spots. Sand with 80 grit and finish sand with 220.
I love the video.. But the motor is tiny though
Thank You ! Watch the second video... not as entertaining but answers some questions and shows engine performance !
Job well done, where did you get the outboard bracket?
Mobycool.com Talk to Scott, he can custom make one no problem to your transom angle if he doesn’t already have one in stock.
Where did you get your bracket and is that a 150 hp?
Its Mobycool.com in Florida. Talk to Scott... super quality and not expensive. Engine is 2016 Mercury 150 4 Stroke not Verado.
Dave. Do you think it’s doable to install twin outboards on a 41ft CC commander?
Absolutely!!! Would be super fun project. Twin 250 Four strokes would work awesome. Would need to see what the transom of the boat looked like but guarantee its doable. So many nice cruisers like Sea Ray’s coming equipped new with outboards now. Its quite a trend.
That is what I want to do to mine.
Nice video. What size boat and what size motor ? Thanks in advance.
Its a 27' 8" so approx 28' boat and its a 4-stroke 150 Mercury outboard. Check out my other video, Boat Rebuild Inboard to Outboard 2 and I answer a lot of questions
Bayliner Contessa 28’ long about 5500 pounds. Used Mercury 150 Four stroke outboard. Check out second video, tried to answer as many questions as I could
Can we get more info on the mount for outbore
Yes....Check out Mobycool.com You can check on line and he has a couple of older video's on youtube. I am putting together an update video, coming out in the next week or so I hope and I will answer as many questions as I can.
How much did this job cost you
About $20 K for everything. I did it all myself.
I'm thinking about doing the same to my boat... How much did the conversion cost you?
Was cheap. Plywood , fiberglass and resin, maybe $400 in materials. Got used outboard from Brian Franzen Marine.. $7500. So maybe 10K with everything
@@k9fashion 7,500 hurt me 😂
Where did the motor bracket come from
Mobycool.com look him up on youtube. He is very reasonable price and makes bullet proof stuff
@@k9fashion thanks👍👍
What is the shaft length of that obm?
24” shaft Mercury
I like the video however instead of music I would have been more engaged with you talking and telling me how and what you did.
Thank you! Check out the second one, Boat Rebuild Inboard to Outboard 2. I talk like a dummy in that one
@@k9fashion will do
My New Favorite channel would love to talk to you on the phone I am doing the same thing you have done to your boat I have the same boat and you are the only one I have found that has the same boat can I please call you I have so many questions.
great job
I bet its way lighted then the V8
Yes and I turned that huge useless engine compartment into a storage locker for all my scuba tanks and gear
So you can’t tilt that motor up?!!?!?
Yes I can tilt it almost all the way up. More tan enough to trailer it
I gave you downvote for the two "happiest"
Days for the boat owner, the day he buys it, and the day he sells it.
Such one should have never bought a boat, if he doesn't understand how to make the happiest day of them all on the water.
Perhaps needed a donkey!
For me outboard rules, I don't want to hear a word inboard, and avoid such set ups like plague, its nothing but complications
How would you ever experience the 2 best days?
That is not how you do it.
