In this video, Don explains what to do if you think your worship team is overplaying.
    Ismael asks:
"God bless - I saw your video of overplaying. I go to a Hispanic church, I play guitar and we really don't have a worship leader - we just go and play. But the problem I'm having is that my drummer, piano player and bass player overplay. Not sure if they just want to show off, but i wish I could do something to help them. The situation is that they are all under 20 years old. What should I do? I am praying for my pastor to put a worship leader there but not sure why he hasn't done that. I've been there for 4 years and I'm looking forward to some advice you can give me. Thanks so much, I really like how you guys play, how you're disciplined with your music."

Bryan Diaz It means that they are not ready to play yet. They should learn how to play their instruments better. Simple.

To Ishmael. I have one comment and one suggestion. Comment first: A Pastor I know once said, if you NOTICE something then that means that God has given it to you to be the author of change. Meaning, since you were the only one it has occurred to that this band needs a worship leader AND since you feel strongly about it, then you should be the one to be the worship leader. So, ask your Pastor if he would allow you to be the worship leader of this band. Suggestion: There is a school in Missouri that teaches & trains in this discipline. It's called IHOP. They have a RUclips channel and a website so you can get more information. Check them out.

I support a band with setting sound, they have a new member and the leader has to stop him from overplaying. He wanted to play on his electric guitar, like a Folk Singer/Songwriter does and the leader told him to change it to something simple, to play muted only 2 string power chords (with no 3rd) and arpegios instead strumming.
One problem with overplaying is, there is no way to increase.
When the drummer plays always the snare normal plus hi hat, how can he increase?
What about to do in verse one bass drum and hi hat only, in verse 2 adding sidestick on the four, chorus with normal snare, verse 3 with sidestick on two and four, bridge hi hat plus offbeat bass drum and the last chorus with cymbal?

I tried to do worship with someone else. Both didn't overplay, but the way they played didn't fit. One of them was creative with bars. Why not add a beat or skip one?
The other person didn't take it seriously, that I had some plans about arrangements. Both didn't work.

I don't think so tbh. I'm personally not a fan of their style, but their worship is true. They've created this culture where there's room for musical creativity, without ever compromising on the heart! So if someone's heart is to just show-off, they wouldn't be getting the platform obviously.

Everybody can't over play at once or it would be senseless, but doing a Lil extra within the timing of the song is not bad,it gives the music a little of a better feel, besides how can you know a good player if he doesn't over play?

alexis pompey How can you know a good player if he doesn't overplay? Really? The ability to restrain oneself from overplaying is one good attribute of a good player.

Guys...let me say something as you said @bassman686 you don't want the worship to be focus on the musicians and the true aspect of you being there which is worship,BUT in this world everyone wants quality...how would you know and see quality if everyone one plays the same thing? There wouldn't be anything special about you which means you would want the ability to got out and bless others with your ministry because you play and sound different from the others, that's because you do special stuff while playing and don't forget the musicians mostly create an atmosphere of worship when they play! The bible also talks about playing skillfully for the lord!(not saying turn the worship into a solo concert) but play do things to make the worship sound and feel better if it means calling for a few extra chords or notes...

alexis pompey We aren't saying fancy licks are bad. We are saying lots of musicians don't play accordingly and overplay. They play unorganized. They don't know how to accommodate their playing to a song. They don't pay attention to the verse, chorus, bridge, etc as each section has different intensity (dynamics). They play whatever and throw in fancy licks. A band with humble hearts that are filled with passion to exalt the Most High is the best quality, in the spiritual aspect. Other than that, playing professionally also brings quality in the musical aspect, as you were talking about "quality". Playing differently by doing special stuff isn't what ministers people. Unless if that "special stuff" is not overplaying and is accommodating to the song and follows the dynamics, then it will. Playing professionally means to not throw any fancy licks just because you think it sounds good and/or because it will bring quality and uniqueness. If you want to be unprofessional and stay at that level forever, go ahead and keep doing what you are doing. But if you want to play professionally, and like you said, play songs differently than the rest, first learn to play TO THE SONG. This is what every professional band does. Even secular bands. In every genre. Don's style of playing doesn't involve too much fancy licks but it can happen. Other genres like gospel music, have more things going on. That's totally fine because it goes with the genre and it's not overplaying. Even then gospel music has its dynamics. First, copy the professional bands. Try to play exactly like they do. Note for note. As you do, you will learn why they do that. Why sometimes less is more. Once you learn more about the feel in music, you can change the song, like the structure, add different sounds, maybe rearrange melodies etc, but you will do it professionally by not overplaying and playing to the song and by playing as a band. If you really want to play uniquely and be different, first learn why the pro's play how they play and first try to imitate them by playing the songs exactly how they do. You will learn a lot. Maybe go to a music school, for professional lessons. Once you learn, then you can make and create your own music. Basically what I'm saying is if you are overplaying right now and want to play differently, don't. First learn to play professionally, then once you have experience and understand music really well at a high level, then you can change songs and create your own music. Blessings brother, I wish you the best in your ministry. 😉🙌🏻

Don is right that he should go to pastor to a dress that they need a leader. The band members need to learn how to submit to a leader and follow the Holy Spirit, and stop playing out of their own understanding. This is what happens when you don't have a leader; everybody's doing their own thing, 'over playing under playing.'

Here is the real problem. there is literally nothing in early Christian liturgy that we know of that even slightly resembles what many protestant churches are doing today. Our communal, sunday worship is supposed to pattern after what Jesus did and commanded at the Last Supper. The "worship leader" is the Pastor/Presider/presbyter. By removing the liturgical forms established by Christ and reinforced by the Holy Spirit through the Church for centuries, many churches have become nothing more than concert halls. The Pastor/ordained minister/priest is the worship leader, not a band or any musician. Now, this is distinct from worship outside the celebration of the Lord's supper on weekends. Outside of that structure that Christ gave us, we of course are encouraged to "sing psalms, hymns and inspired songs" even spontaneously, as Paul did in prison, as Jesus and the disciples did after the Last Supper. When you collapse the Eucharistic celebration of the Lord's Supper into just singing worship songs, you have abandoned the very structure Christ gave us, and which Paul also explicitly reinforced.
