Excellent symphony indeed. Matthews first 5 symphonies are really quite unimpressive. Fortunately by the time he got to no 6 he had finally figure out how to write a symphony. Nos. 6, 7 and 8 are truly fine symphonies.
Both David and his brother Colin are fine composers, after all both worked with Benjamin Britten as his musical assistants; that must say something about them. Still, they deserve their reputations for themselves and their own music, not because of their famous association with BB.
What a beautiful opening...it reminds of Sibelius in the way it unfolds.
stunning symphony

Number 3 is at least fairly entertaining.
