For me, I had slowly eliminated carbs from Jan-April 2020. Slow progress. I examined my food habits and eliminated the final barriers, "Keto" ice cream, and "Keto" chocolate.
Then, one Wed. night, 3rd week of May, I was using a flashlight to search through my kitchen cupboards searching for crumbs. Pretzel, cookie, crackers...didn't matter. Thankfully, there were no crumbs, but I remember stopping and looking at myself, flashlight in hand. It was in that moment I understood that I was an addict.
    NO TURNING BACK.
    I will persevere.
    But it's a daily struggle.

😳, I used to do that with cigarettes all the time. Addiction is a pain to shed. I'm not at even one month carb free yet, so it's still the honeymoon phase for me. Hopefully I can stay strong and not have any crumbs when I am at my weakest.
      Thanks for sharing. 😌

I no longer find it to be a struggle. Once ALL carbohydrates were eliminated for a period of time the struggle ended. No more cravings or even a thought of want. Thats why this seems so sustainable. .

Wow, I related so much to what you just said. I was that woman, beaten and messed up and had sliced away all my family. He dumped me and my three kids off, ironically, at a battered women's shelter. I had nothing but my children and when that happened I vowed to never allow anyone to do that to me again. And I haven't, yet I've allowed carbs to control me in the same way and have cut off exercising and health. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving this analogy that I relate to so well. I am that person. I'm going into my kitchen right now and cleaning it all out. Consider yourself hugged. By the way it does have a very happy ending. I never remarried, however, through hard work and determination I bought a brand new home for me and my children and am now retired with enough money to hold me until I'm 100! Praise God - because He is the one who took care of me.

yes..great analogy...many of us can relate to...It is not an easy decision to give up the carbs and it's not even easy to stay on this way...But it's worth it!

I survived an abusive marriage for 15 years before I was able to get out. I've overcome alcoholism, drug addiction and cigarettes. Honestly, giving up carbs has been the hardest thing in my life. I do great for a couple of months, then something stupid happens and I cave in to my addiction, telling myself it's just this one last time. I am 60 years old and have been morbidly obese for over 30 years now. This analogy really hit home for me. I could feel that young girl's pain. I knew what choice she was going to make because I made that same choice numerous times during my marriage. You have made me realize that I am making the same choice now, with carbs. Thank you.

I recently went back to my _abusive partner._ It all started with a slice of pizza. I figured what harm can one slice do. Then the next day all I could think about was that pizza. I think you know where the rest of this story goes.
Being back on carbs was so comfortable and blissful, at first. That is until the reflux returned and I started getting hungry every 45 minutes. Suddenly I'm 10 kilos heavier and I'm tired and lethargic all the time. My shirts and pants have _shrunk,_ getting out of bed is a little harder, I felt bloated and gassy all the time. I wish there was a restraining order for carbs.
I'm 3 weeks back into keto again and I'm starting to feel much better. I tapered off the carbs, so the keto flu was minimised. I can already feel my mental cognition improving. Take 361; maybe this one will stick.

Have already had to reduce my thyroid medication and looking forward to getting rid of it as well as the acid reflux medication that I am on due to a hiatus hernia. My abusive husband is 77, I am only 54, and ill on oxygen 24/7. I moved out the bedroom and took my wedding rings off 2 years ago. One day I will be free of him ...Wish I could afford a virtual consult. Jesus Christ! I have been a carb addict since in my mothers womb(I’ve always reckoned). I have tried, tried and tried again to lose weight with the usual array of BS advice - to no avail. I am, at present the heaviest I have ever been and was feeling so lost. I have followed this great man on you tube for over a year now, watched and re watched his videos, BUT this one, this is the one that has got me. I’m tying this with tears streaming down my face. It is the first and only time that this reality is my reality and that I’m imprisoned by myself, my addiction to carbs and my fear of kicking their ass right out of my life. My Mom passed away 23 years ago tomorrow, she was a heavy smoker, a carb addict and died after a lifetime of struggles with what docs diagnosed as depression. She always said she never drank alcohol as she knew what would happen if she did. Predisposed to addiction, or the high certain things give us. I look back on her life and can’t without hesitation say, carbs and her addiction to them had a huge impact on her mental health - leading to her death at 65 by suicide. I needed so badly to watch this video today. It is hit me hard, I needed that jolt. Thank you Dr Cywes.

Once I understood what was happening in my body (NAFLD/Onset of full blown Diabetes) and committed to a Ketovore program like there was no other path for me, that was when everything changed. Gratefully that took about 3 week from the actual diagnosis because i spent night and day researching every detail. THANK YOU! have to realize that I can not use artificial sweeteners or Stevia or any other natural substitute for sugar any more than my mother could drink nonalcoholic beer and stay off of real alcohol.
It just keeps me addicted to the real thing. I keep trying to transition away from the diet Coke and the Stevia, But I never quite get there and I never leave the actual carbohydrates completely behind. So I just end up eating more fat with more carbohydrate - even ‘healthy carb’ like berries. If they are in the house and I am tired after working a night shift and a little cranky, I will eat the whole bag of frozen berries with some nice cocoa powder, Stevia and coconut oil which freezes the chocolate around the berries and makes a nice treat. Which I cannot stop eating. I just have to get this through my head. Thank you so much. I have to treat most carbohydrate like my mother treated alcohol and did not drink for 40 years.

Most of my 65 years have been spent imprisoned by my abuser, carbs. I choose carbs over people and socialization. Relationships go ignored and fizzle out. Any sadness, guilt or shame over addiction and loneliness is numbed by eating more carbs. During many stretches of (white knuckle) normalcy, I feel myself healing in mind, body, spirit. It's WONDERFUL, until I self sabotage and go back to the sick security of my abuser. Insidious, shattering, and still I give in. Until recent years, the endless stream of "professionals" I've seen told me to toughen up, eat "normally," phone friends, try this drug, blah, blah. I come from a long line of long dead alcoholics and drug addicts and knew at a young age carbs were my drug. Why the hell didn't professionals know?! My gawd, THANK YOU for validating! Sorry to ramble, just so happy to find your channel. Time for me to kick my abuser to the curb again! Why does it have to be so hard? Going from cake and ice cream to plain salads, fish, meat, eggs is a bitch.

Another great tool for loosing the carb addiction is to stay busy. Too many people due to modern lifestyles have become too sedentary. We eat because we have nothing to fill time with. Or we sit in front of devices, gazing at a screen. Physical things can keep us busy, both mind and body. I’m an artist I do sit to do some art pieces. But my mind is also completely focused on my work. Some of my art requires physically being built by hand. So my mind and body are in tune with what I’m doing. Keeping the mind and body occupied is a big plus in beating the carb monsters. Idle hands, body and mind leads to looking for something. Unfortunately that’s where the idea of a snack falls into place.
All that being said, we can’t be active all the time. That is just an impossibility. That’s when the mental lapse can occur. That’s the battle that’s the hardest to win. I haven’t completely won it. Probably never will
I also believe the most dirtiest word in the Keto community is the word “treat”. That word is how we convince ourselves it’s okay. Oh I’m going to have a “treat”. I deserve a “treat”.
I’m not perfect, I’ve cheated occasionally in my 2.6 years of doing Keto.. Had that baked potato, over indulged on nuts, had a little Keto ice cream. Sure have, haven’t regretted it either. Why? Because that one cheat kept me sane and from going whole hog on a binge. Kept me from quitting.
I’m carnivore now after 2.6 years of Keto and OMAD. But I’m also human... I forgive myself for that

Thank you, Doc for your stark honesty about what carbs have done to my life. I am in a prison of my own making. Sugar has turned me into a crippled old woman. I can barely walk because my weight has caused my hips and knees to deteriorate. I went the surgical route with a gastric band. I lost 60 lbs (and have kept it off for 5 years) but I’m still too fat to have orthopedic surgery. The band eroded through my stomach and very nearly killed me. (12 days in the hospital)

was addicted to drugs and alcohol and carb addiction is worse; mainly because it's not recognized and shamed . . . but eating is so important and enjoyable to us, it's the HARDEST to ultimately accept as an addiction and give up . . . because ultimately it is our DECISION to stop an addictive behavior, no matter which one! Thankfully, giving up carbs finally causes RELIEF from the stress of not being able to eat . . . or being on a restrictive diet. Because REAL FOOD is so satisfying and energizing that the sugar addiction can finally be laid to rest!!! at least for me . . . thanks, Doc.
