Now the fun begins! Keep em coming and good work. The Install series was really helpful to me as i am currently setting up my studio based around an SSL Matrix 2 console and a lot of outboard gear.
Love how well the UF8 integrates in their 'newer' consoles. It doesn't look out of place and super handy to have. Waaay better than a controller out of reach of the console which you saw a lot with their Nucleus DAW controller!
Didn't think watching someone mix drums on an SSL could be so much fun. I bet actually doing it is a hell of a lot more fun. Congrats! And thanks for making this.
Being an SSL owner I can you that you are hitting the channels way conservative for drums. On a 4000G kick and snare come to the desk at pretty much stun (right before the convertors distort). That is where the magic happens.
Gotta love the West audio stuff, they have sme wonderful reviews! I love their Beta 76! Bang for buck, too! The ng looks amazing, love the filter sidechain!
Hey! Nice video! Beautiful desk! I’ve been waiting for someone to finally show how it sounds. By the way, check WesAudio compressor, it seems it made left channel louder! All the best! 😉
Thanks for the video. Did you print the drum mix into a stem before continuing with the rest of the mix? Is it better to keep the drums on separate tracks throughout the mix or consolidate into a stem? Do you lose sound quality condensing into a stem?
Also this video was very clear and straightforward. Thank you. I like how it seems to be a lot more about “feel” in the analog world. I think in the box there is so much visual information and spectrum view going on that I think that can influence the process in a negative way. That’s my biggest takeaway from watching you do this. I saw another video where (super famous mixing dude with long beard titled i don’t gain stage) pretty much said the same thing. The example he gave was that he left in a really bad low end bleed problem in the overheads because it made the track sound big and unique, but when he went later to check his work visually on the spectrum there was a clear issue so he “fixed” it and it ruined the whole feel if the song.
@@MixingMusicAnalog Also, you've mentioned another SSL box in the rack a few times. I think it's a summing mixer? A video on that other SSL box would be cool to understand. I think you discussed it in parts but I don't think I'm going to hunt through the hours of install videos to find it again. It probably deserves it's own video as I recall you speaking how it's grown on you (whatever it is). Thanks again and I'm really enjoying this channel. I found you searching for analog mixing and SSL. I wasn't aware you had another channel.
Thanks for making the video. Congrats on the board! I'm just wondering at this point of your ownership of the board if you have sent tracks to the board without any plug ins or in the box groups?
Love the video(s) and also on your other channel. Translates very well on youtube, sounds great. Only thing I would say for the compression ITB going to the console, I wouldn’t use the brainworx SSL E channel or honestly any brainworx stuff as they definitely take away the more transients than other plugins and in a non pleasing way at least to my ear. Might be worth experimenting with a few SSL or just any VCA type compressor plugins as a substitute, see which gets the best results. Maybe SSL native? Or whatever works best. Sounds great though 👍
Great video 👍🏼 Question: what if you wanted to use a reverb plugin on the kit? Can you route a bus back into PT or will that cause delay compensation issues?
Right now I have a 3rd Apollo and using the 16 outputs to route to the small faders on the console. That is where I route all my Reverb plugins and then blend them in. I will be doing a video on that at one point
Regarding 16 group outs and stereo returns - those are not linked up until you stick a cable in is that correct? So you can send to anything from the group outs, like processing or headphone etc etc?
I'm only about 7 minutes in (so I might add a few more), but I have a few questions: 1. As you have both hardware and software ssl channel strips [obviously one without compression], is there actually much/any difference between the hardware and software eq [i.e. is there something about it that the software eq just can't replicate?] 2. I've noticed in a few different tutorials like this, people will compress the kick very slightly. When you do it, is it just a case of getting a certain amount of gain reduction or is there something you specifically listen for?

Thanks, will do! More videos coming soon!

It does integrated quite nicely. I just need to learn how to use it....LOl
Love the SSL Videos, Keep up the Good Work.
Thanks, will do!
Those drums sound so good. It's nice to be able to hear the Origin in action now. What the Aphex did to the snare drum was pure magic.
Thanks!
Really Enjoyed the setup series of videos. Great channel
Awesome, thank you!

You're welcome and thanks for your support!

You're correct! I am still working on the gain staging part of this thing! I need to experiment hitting the console harder. I appreciate the tip
Place a hard limiting plugin on the kick and snare so you can send it at -0.2 db. Waves L1 is oddly great for this. Miss mixing on a SSL.
Love What You Have Done So Far Sound's Spot On Son
Thank you
Thank you very much for your unique work for us!
My pleasure!
Great stuff again. Would love to see more vids on UF8 integration with Studio One
It's coming, its on my list of videos to make
💪💪💪 SSL AND You 💪💪
Thanks for watching!
Amazing how easy it is to dial in the sound with this console, and it sounds great!
It really is!
Awesome!
Thanks!
This was awesome! Please don’t stop 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
No worries! Many more videos coming!!
Funny i was gonna ask for this but this video is already up.
GREAT!!
Gotta love the West audio stuff, they have sme wonderful reviews! I love their Beta 76! Bang for buck, too! The ng looks amazing, love the filter sidechain!
Yea, I am really pleased with all their stuff. I just picked up their Vari-MU compressor call the REHA

Can't say it better myself!

Can you do daw control with this mixer
No
Sounds good.
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Did you print the drum mix into a stem before continuing with the rest of the mix? Is it better to keep the drums on separate tracks throughout the mix or consolidate into a stem? Do you lose sound quality condensing into a stem?
No I did not print the drum stem before continuing the mix.
@@MixingMusicAnalog thanks for the response
A phase align video would be awesome. 😎

Noted!
Yes, working in the analog domain is way more about feel and using your ears than looking at a screen and plugins, thats for sure.

Man autoalling on/off such a huge difference!!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for making the video. Congrats on the board! I'm just wondering at this point of your ownership of the board if you have sent tracks to the board without any plug ins or in the box groups?
Yes, at this point, I am pretty much plugin free and only use groups in the box with larger sessions. check out some of my "Inside the Mix" episodes

ok, thanks for watching!
Hi. On the UFLS8 can you use it to start and stop de palying of the song in the daw. Do you have transport tools? Cheers.
yes
funny question: how much is your chair? That rolls pretty smoothly
I think it was $700

Do you feel like compressing before the eq is a good idea? Just curious.
Yes i do and in this workflow I have too. I do a very light amount of compression to begin with
What was used to record the drums?
not sure. I did not record them
Regarding 16 group outs and stereo returns - those are not linked up until you stick a cable in is that correct? So you can send to anything from the group outs, like processing or headphone etc etc?
That is correct. You need a Dsub cable from the Apollo to the Console

We answered this in the Live Stream, go back and watch and enjoy!!
You might think I’m crazy, but I would pass every track through the Bluey, print each one, then bring them back again to the console 😅
not crazy at all.
Did you record this on the Origin? if not what pre amps?
No it was not recorded on the Origin. not sure how it recorded or with what gear.
Pls do a video of autoaling 💪💪💪💪
at one point I will!

Huge compromise for SSL Origin compared to an SSL 4000E! You are forced to use plugin for dynamic but it is not the same workflow.
Ok thanks.
