Should you dehorn / disbud your goat?

  • We do not disbud/dehorn our goats and believe that they don't pose a danger to humans or other animals if raised in the right environment. Over the last 20 years we have never had any issues with horned animals injuring themselves or humans. We feel that it is important that they have a large amount of space and the type of fencing can play a huge role with causing problems. When choosing fencing make sure that the openings are small enough not to allow their head to get through. Most of our property is electric that is slowly being replaced with Stucco Wire permanent fencing.

      @@The10AcreWoods A baby goat video appeared in my feed a few months ago (I have no connection in any way, shape, or form with goats/livestock), and Ive become completely enamored with these little guys. Watching them bounce and hop around while practicing "butting heads (adorable)" is truly a joy. They truly are quentessential examples of pure innocence, jubilation, and excited curiosity.
      Just an idea, other similar channels rake in tons of views just videoing the kids playing (hopping, jumping around with one another). Good luck and good health to you and your extended furry family.

    I have Nigerian dwarf goats and all of mine both male and female have their horns. I think the horns are beautiful and useful for all the reasons you listed. They used to cut the ears of certain breeds of dogs just because that was what they had always done. Glad that stopped.

    . I guess when adult goats break their horns they don't grow back at all. Levi and the other ponies are so friendly and really fluffy this year. The alpacas and sheep will definitely be ready for shearing in the summer. Tyr has it made with a lovely home and lots of friends. I've never heard of terms used for a bunch of cats. I just love your channel and I love the way your and your wife and daughter interact with your animals. Your so kind and so loving with them. How do you and your family decide on who names the animals? Also thanks for the information on the the horns. I have been an animal lover since I was around 5 yrs old and I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and we could not afford to have pets then. Did not get pet til 1969 when I was almost 23 (a small pomeranian puppy). I only have parakeets and a cockatiel now and I am up in age almost 75 so I live vicariously through animal videos. My favorite animal is the panda bear but next to that are the Nigerian goats. Love hearing your Canadian accents too when you say "about" and "out" and eh!. I have been to to Montreal and British Columbia and Niagara Falls on the Canadian side way before we needed passports.

    I have a female Alpine Nubian cross I picked up last spring. I started out looking for a bottle baby lamb and of course I ended up with a milking goat 3 years ( ish ) probably more like 5 years old 😂 she was great for a couple weeks then she started to head butt me ? So I first made a loud noise to warn her but on the third time I slapped her nose, not hard but enough to make her pull back, haven't had a problem since. We take her for walks and she is great with the grand kids. Always the first to the fence. I guess she was testing her boundary's / pecking order 🤷‍♀️

    Well, I do not completely agree on your goat story. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and although my goats have more than five acres during the winter, they jump fences or push them down when the electricity is off. Even a fence of 1,80 meter or 5'10 feet is jumped by some of them without touching it.

    • @The10AcreWoods
      @The10AcreWoods  3 года назад +1

      Yes, I can understand as we currently only have Pygmy goats. Tara and I have discussed installing 8' fencing but have decided that 5' fencing with the option to add 3' later if need be is the plan. My guess is you have larger goats.

    You can burn / disbud scurs at any age. Its just easier to get them while younger and less strong. You are also incorrect about horns being used for thermal regulation. Size/material/flow are the key to exchanging temperature. And goat horns dont provide any of that. The size of horns are not large enough for the overall body mass of a goat. The material (keratin) of the horn is on its basic level hair. Hair is not an exchanger but an insulator. Lastly flow. You need something to flow through the horns to transfer temperature. Blood does flow through a horn but at a super small amount and not in a quick enough manner. Having horns or not is a personal choice, but at least be informed and do what you need for your own farm but dont make excuses for why. The biggest reason I see most people keep the horns is because they think its cruel. The next cause is the inability to disbud. On the flip side, people disbud for 2 main reasons. In order to register and show your goat, they must be disbudded. The second is indeed safety. Its not just safety for other goats but for themselves and humans as well. Goats are jerks and love to find ways to get their horns stuck in fences.

      No Excuses. We find nature does not make mistakes, usually due to human error are where things arise. Everything in Nature has a purpose. Provided an awesome link below. We focus on what is best for the animals not human choices or emotions. We think it is cruel, kinda like cauterising your fingernails so you can not scratch someone. That said there are varying opinions on it. If concerned about safety then should learn more before getting goats. It is actually safer to have horns than not, and they can be trimmed instead of budded which is not cruel( like cutting your fingernails) Goats are amazing, and when you understand there needs, then you can adapt there environment to accomodate behaviors. I hope the link below helps.
